Shaynna Blaze’s top tips for your kitchen and bathroom update

With over 20 years’ design experience behind her, Shaynna Blaze needs little introduction. We asked the award-winning interior designer and The Block judge, to share some of her best tips for updating your kitchen and bathroom.

Know your reason

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but the bathroom is now an oasis. There has been a big movement towards having beautiful bathrooms and laundries. Upgrading these rooms can also get expensive very quickly, so it is important to know the reason behind your renovation.

“It’s not just about the kitchen anymore. When you’re spending a lot of money on fixtures such as stone and cabinetry in more than one room, you need think about why you are renovating,” says Shaynna. “Are you renovating to add value, or is this your forever home? Knowing the answer will mean the difference between adding a simple stone overlay and building from the ground up.”

Picture the space in use

We all know the importance of the working triangle in the kitchen, but what else do you use your kitchen for? If you love to cook with a whole bunch of different kitchen gadgets, then you need to allocate bench space and cabinetry for them. If your kitchen doubles as a home office space you could have drawers designated for paperwork.

“Everybody has their own lifestyle, and the kitchen has evolved beyond a simple room for preparing food. Is yours a social stop for people while you are cooking? Is this where your kids do their homework? You need to think about how the layout works with these other elements.”

Use lasting trends, not fads

When picking style trends, keep in mind that kitchens and bathrooms should last between five to 10 years. Look at the big picture, and go for trends that are long term and functional.

“Stone and marble benchtops are going to be around for years to come. When picking your cabinetry colours, make sure you are happy to live with them for the next 10 years. Otherwise, use overhead lighting to spruce up the space – it’s cheaper and easier to change later down the track.”

When it comes to bathrooms, don’t be afraid to go bold. “All white tiles are beautiful but boring. Think Moroccan, Art Deco, Art Nouveau – it’s all about capturing that ‘boutique hotel experience’.”

Shaynna also suggests staying away from the current (over)use of black and rose gold, as well as the industrial vintage trend. Opt for gunmetal or aged brass tapware instead. “Rose gold is one of those things that you wouldn’t put in unless you absolutely love it. If it’s your signature style then go for it. Very strong colours like green and navy will definitely be in for a while, but make sure you love them before using them in your kitchen or bathroom refresh.”

Stick to your budget

Whatever your budget, it is possible to upgrade your kitchen and bathroom in style. Shaynna suggests upgrading the look and the feel of a space when renovating on a budget. Changing the layout of the kitchen will push costs up, so be sure to keep plumbing and wiring in the same place.

“Focus on the things people touch the most. Overlay your benchtop with stone; change the position of the sink; repaint your doors; and choose good quality handles. These things will add instant value with minimum fuss.”

If you are working from the ground up, think carefully about your appliances. “People look at brands all the time and want everything to match. This can be a surefire way to blow your budget. Take a look at what you use the most and splurge on that, while opting for something a little down the budget line for the rest.”

The same thing applies to the bathroom; like the handles in the kitchen, tapware should be your priority. “A stone benchtop with a basic laminate underneath will work wonders. Have one feature tile wall and use budget tiles for the other areas. Or you could also just tile the wet area rather than all the walls to save money.”

Shaynna’s newest role sees her as a brand ambassador for Granite Transformations. Her favourite products include their unique tiles and the new Marble Collection which has all the beauty of marble with the added benefit of being heat resistant and non-porous. “Granite Transformations enable renovators to revamp their kitchen and bathroom by working with the existing surfaces and cabinets, for a proportion of the cost of a complete demolition and rebuild.”

Step inside Chrissie Swan’s chic yet practical kitchen reno

The Aussie radio and television personality Chrissie Swan upgraded her Melbourne kitchen recently resulting in a much more functional space for her family of five, that looks fabulous too.

Chrissie’s kitchen BEFORE

“The old kitchen looked shabby and dated. There was almost no bench space, and a stupid overhead cabinet that was tricky and always malfunctioning. But the worst part was that the fridge was housed in a dark brown Laminex tower smack bang in the middle of the kitchen blocking the view to the living room and closing in the kitchen completely, making it impractical and small,” says Chrissie who relocated the fridge to completely open up the space.

Chrissie’s kitchen BEFORE – the fridge dominated the space

And while the mother of three young children wanted the space to be more functional, she wasn’t prepared to compromise on style. “I wanted a simple, unfussy kitchen that I didn’t have to be precious about but still looked stylish and contemporary without being faddish, and a bit luxurious too. I needed more bench space desperately and some nice appliances to add some luxury. It needed to be robust and able to withstand lots of cooking and lots of people,” says Chrissie.

Chrissie’s kitchen AFTER

It was a love of marble that took her to Granite Transformations where she sourced an engineered stone at a fraction of the price of the real thing. “I love marble (who doesn’t) but it’s so hard to look after and I don’t have the time or natural ability to keep it looking good. I’d ruin it. So, I was really thrilled to see the Trend Surface engineered stone as it’s an affordable and beautiful alternative to marble. It meant that I could get the marble look I was after (and a lot of it) without having to remortgage my house. I also chose from the matte collection of Laminex cupboards fronts,” says Chrissie.

Chrissie’s kitchen AFTER

“It was essential for me to have a robust surface in my kitchen. I cook a lot. A LOT. And I have hot pans and stand mixers and knives and food processors all on the go often at the same time. My kids also like to help prep in the kitchen so I needed a benchtop that can withstand the odd cutting up of a pear straight on the benchtop without a chopping board. I loved the surface I chose because it has all the class and timelessness of marble without the maintenance. I love it.” The engineered marble alternative certainly fulfils the ‘robust’ criteria as it is non-porous and heat, scratch, stain and impact resistant.

Chrissie in her new kitchen

Amazingly, the new kitchen took just five days to complete given all of the building is done off-site. “One Monday, the guys came and dismantled the kitchen, over the next few days the new cupboards arrived on a truck and were installed, then the stone was cut on site in my driveway and fitted straight away and literally by Friday night I was cooking dinner in the new kitchen with everything finished,” says Chrissie.

Shaynna Blaze shares her top kitchen and bathroom renovation tips

When renovating a home we often look to the experts to gather tips and inspiration to ensure the best possible results. And with Shaynna Blaze, of The Block and Selling Houses Australia, having just renovated her new studio’s kitchen and bathroom, she is the perfect person to share her tips.

Small budget, huge inspiration!

Collect everything and anything that inspires you and create your own lookbook or mood board to capture it all. In the kitchen, I was inspired by the heritage of the 1880 building while still making if feel and work as a kitchen of the 21st century. Whereas the bathroom was complete fantasy, referencing Versailles.

Usage – who is using the space and how?

It’s important to think about who is going to be in the area and how the area is going to be used on a daily basis. Keeping these things in mind helps to create your layout, the appliances and fittings you need, right down to the colour palette you will select.

Define your must-haves.

Both the bathroom and kitchen are frequently used spaces and therefore it’s critical the fittings are both functional and practical but also visually appealing. Ensure you have accounted for those items you can’t live without and build from there. These are areas that are not just for me so I wanted whoever walks in the rooms to be transported somewhere.

Make the most of the spaces footprint.

Limited space often restricts the layout of a kitchen or bathroom. Ensure every space is well thought out and planned. With only one wall for tall items, in the kitchen my main priority was to make sure I would be able to fit as much bench, drawer and cupboard space as possible.

Add colour, texture and patterns.

Colour, texture and patterns are stylistic building blocks of any decorating palette. These key elements help to create the style, mood and the feel of each room. The kitchen has subtle features with panel details in the island bench and glass overhead cabinets with a modern twist on the herringbone pattern in the custom subway mirror splashback tiles. The bathroom takes it to a more extreme level of a period style with detail in every form from tiles and light fittings to the furniture which was a signature of the Victorian era, even though all the details aren’t of a Victorian nature.

Top tips for a smoother bathroom renovation

Nothing signals the beginning of a new year like a good home project! So if you feel like refreshing the look of your bathroom or embarking on a major overhaul, Granite Transformations’ design specialist David Barr has four top tips to assist you in avoiding a costly or lengthy bathroom renovation.

granite transformations interiors addict

1. Have a budget and stick to it, however build in a 20% buffer. A good rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t spend more than 5% of the value of your home on a bathroom renovation. So if your home is worth $400,000, allow up to $20,000 on a bathroom.

2. It is vital to take measurements of a room and outline space requirements before purchasing and installing any new bathroom products. Be aware of existing fixtures, such as plumbing and electrical outlets, doors and windows.

3. Whatever timeframe you think it will take, double it! Keep in mind a complete bathroom renovation can take up to 18 days including demolition, plumbing, electrical and insulation, whereas a bathroom makeover can be turned around in as little as two days, as often you can re-use existing cabinetry, plumbing and electricals.

4. Move towards simplicity, with contemporary and minimalist design and fixtures. A pristine, uncluttered layout and style, utilising clever storage, will make your bathroom appear spacious and inviting. Maximise space by adding a large mirror to give the appearance of a larger and more open room. Add a focal feature with mosaic tiles in combination with granite or other materials, such as timber and soft furnishings.

A light and bright real kitchen reno

Homeowner: Jessie Harvey

Cost: $28,000

This family kitchen is the hub of the home and it’s hard to believe it was once dark, dingey, uninspiring and all kinds of brown! Homeowner and mum Jessie Harvey, tells us what they did.

201409Apr_6657

“We opted for a new kitchen as a makeover was not an option due to the condition of the old carcasses, which were literally falling apart! We installed Granite Transformations Trend Surfaces in Bianco Real on the main benchtop and Trend Surfaces in Venus Grey on the island benchtop. Gloss white doors opened up the space and a mirror splashback reflects the light and garden opposite the kitchen.” Add to the mix some IAG appliances and concrete effect wallpaper above the overhead cupboards to tie in with the grey island benchtop and create some texture, and the kitchen was given a whole new lease on life.

201409Apr_6653

“The space before was dark and closed in by walls so we wanted to open it up by removing two walls on either side of the kitchen,” Jessie explains. “It’s a much more open space now with the lounge and dining room opening to the kitchen. The removal of one of the walls also means there’s a view to the backyard, perfect for watching the kids outside while cooking.”

The family, including kids Bonnie-Willow (seven) and Banjo Lee (four), didn’t used to want to spend any time in the kitchen. “Now, I’m always in there,” Jessie says. “My kids are always doing homework, craft activities and anything messy really on the benchtops so it was essential to have surfaces that could allow them to do this without any staining or marking. The stone surfaces are amazing. The kitchen really is the centre of the house now.”

Jessie is most happy with the amount of benchtop space she now has and loves the feeling of openness. “I can watch the kids in most spaces of the house from the kitchen now. I also love putting the pendant lights on over the island benchtop at night time as it creates such a relaxed and calm mood.”

And here are the before photos…

The latest kitchen makeover trends

Australians are still all about the neutrals when it comes to their kitchens, but they’re mixing it up with more eclectic finishes, matt doors, deeper benchtops and deorative murals.

Copyright Eliot Cohen - Zeitgeist Photographyemail: eliot@zeitgeist.com.au

In 2012, kitchen makeover specialists Granite Transformations completed more than 8,000 kitchens in greys, beiges and whites and in response to demand, they’ve released 5 new colours exclusive to the Australian market and in time for the warmer months ahead. Ikea, on the other hand, whose catalogue launch I attended last month, has introduced a red kitchen, especially with its Australian Asian customers in mind.

A quick and easy mosaic update for your kitchen?

What are your thoughts on adding a bit of razzle dazzle to the kitchen? Cool or tacky? Do you like a few standout unique touches, or do you think a kitchen should be kept simple with clean lines and plain surfaces?

granite transformations mosaic kitchen splashback

Granite Transformations’ resident trends expert Jessie Harvey says bolder splashbacks and colourful kitchens are one of the most popular trends in kitchens this year. “We’re seeing a tendency towards vibrant colours in kitchens and an easy way to update your kitchen without opting for a full makeover is to add a colourful splashback over the existing surface.”
