Our pick of what’s new at IKEA: October 2021

This month’s IKEA launch (how is it already October?!) is all about bringing the beauty of nature indoors. The look contrasts the cosy wool textures and natural elements typical of Scandinavian design with a rustic, industrial style.

There’s two gorgeous rugs under $250, celebrated British designer Ilse Crawford has created bonfire-scented candles and the table with storage ladder is one of the most versatile pieces we’ve seen in a long time; perfect for today’s ever-changing and multipurpose homes.

Here’s our pick of what’s new…

ÄPPLARYD two-seater sofa

ÄPPLARYD is a sophisticated new sofa family – available in different sizes and colours – made with calm and comfort in mind. Its steel legs and clean lines give the sofa a balanced silhouette, while its soft cushions and tactile covers make it perfect for whiling away evenings indoors.

The rich cushions use pocket springs that mould to your shape for extra comfort, as well as being long-lasting and using less foam. What’s more, its covers are made of recycled polyester – a better option for the planet. Stylish, serene and taking steps to be more sustainable. From $799.

BEHJÄRTAD scented candle in ceramic pot

The new season is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere indoors, with elements borrowed from the natural world. A member of the BEHJÄRTAD range in collaboration with British designer Ilse Crawford, this bonfire-scented candle captures the mood perfectly. In ceramic containers, available in muted tones of dark brown and grey. $6 and $10.

HÅVERUD table with storage ladder

It’s like a pop-up work-from-home spot!

As our living spaces in urban settings get smaller, we need furniture that adapts to our specific needs and requirements. Be it for dining, studying, preparing food or your latest craft project, the HÅVERUD table is designed with versatility in mind.

With a counter-height table and a metal storage ladder, its flexible, compact design makes it a smart option for smaller living spaces, and multifaceted homes
and lifestyles alike. You’ll be inspired to take up a new hobby and get to work! $159.

SVÄRDBORG handmade, flatwoven rug

IKEA rugs have always been amazing value. With its chunky wool texture, the new SVÄRDBORG will not only provide cosiness underfoot but it’s a good-looker too. Handmade by skilled craftspeople in India and Bangladesh with good working conditions and fair wages, each SVÄRDBORG rug is a one-of-a-kind beauty. It has a tactile, pebble-like appearance, flecked with neutral-coloured yarns that have been added by hand into the weave. $249.

VAMDRUP flatwoven rug

IKEA pay homage to traditional Scandinavian handicraft with the new VAMDRUP rug. Made of warm and durable natural fibres– 100% wool, with the warp made from 100% cotton from more sustainable sources – the pattern was designed by Maria Vinka. Inspired by the historical “Munkabälte’’ weaving pattern, this eye-catching rug offers a contemporary update on tradition with bold motifs in warm and neutral tones. Handwoven by skilled artisans in India in organised weaving centres with good working conditions and fair wages, each rug’s pattern is unique in its own way. This ensures that no two products are the same. $249.

STORSLINGA LED chandelier

Sure to become a contemporary classic! With a clean, black metal frame and distinct lighting design, STORSLINGA, a new eight-arm pendant lamp, offers a contemporary update on the chandelier. The globe-shaped heads are made from high quality plastic resembling glass. The LED light emits a clear and even glow, making it suitable for atmospheric dining areas, as well as everyday workstations. The lamp’s slim design makes it a perfect choice for smaller living spaces. $95.

Perhaps the high house prices are forcing you to look for alternative options for extra space, like a shipping container in your backyard?

Kids’ interiors products in general were popular this year, especially this roundup of places to buy Aussie kids’ linen online.

Our list of the top Sydney interior designers and their websites was much licked on, as was Kathryn Bamford’s guide to homewares shopping in Bali.

Continuing to prove you love a good roundup, you lapped up our top kitchen trends for 2015 from our friends at The Good Guys.

Unsurprisingly, Ilse Crawford’s hotly anticipated collection for IKEA was also in the most read this year.

IKEA Australia’s hotly anticipated Ilse Crawford collaboration

It may be many months away, but the hotly anticipated SINNERLIG COLLECTION by Ilse Crawford will be launched in all IKEA Australia stores this August.

SINNERLIG COLLECTION ikea interiors addict

A collaboration between IKEA and internationally renowned interior decorator and designer, Ilse, the collection will offer people top of the line design at typical IKEA prices. Which of course we love!

With more than 30 pieces for the home, they explore the beauty and tactility of raw materials and celebrate the imperfections that arise in the process of their production.

The collection can loosely be categorised into three groups: working, dining and lounging. Each group has a piece of furniture in the centre — the trestle table, dining table, and the daybed. Although the collection works neatly in these settings, everything has been developed so that you can decide how you wish to fit these pieces into your home.

One of the most striking features in the collection is the use of cork. Cork is renewable, durable, an acoustic softener, waterproof and easy to clean. Each piece is designed to engage our senses and connect us to our homes.

6 accessories to add some wow to your coffee table

If there’s one place you can have some fun with decorating, it’s the coffee table. If you’re the sort of person who reads this blog, I’m guessing you’re more likely to be creating little vignettes and stacks of coffee table books (they’re called that for a reason) that express your style, than just thinking of this piece of furniture as somewhere for your remotes and a cup of tea. Am I right?

coffee table accessories

A well styled coffee table makes such a difference to a living room! I have so much fun with my own coffee table. I’m constantly arranging and rearranging, adding fresh flowers, swapping around candles, changing up that month’s favoured books from my collection (possibly colour coding their spines, yes).

I’ve put together these top picks (above) if you are looking to add some instant wow factor, style or a talking point to your own coffee table. I hope you like them. Of course you should make your coffee table yours and a reflection of you, just like the rest of your home. This is just intended as food for thought (especially the donut!). If you don’t have a coffee table (really?!) these could work on a buffet, side table or even bookcase.

Where to buy

Clockwise from top left: Tom Dixon Eclectic candles (the marble lid doubles as a coaster later) from dedece+ ($113 each), gold sculptural spheres (perfect on top of your book stack!) from West Elm (from $49), Ilse vase (the perfect size for small; blooms on your coffee table and heavy enough not to get knocked over easily) from Georg Jensen ($120), the new Adore Home book is not only full of great Aussie interior inspiration, but with its gold cover and hot pink spine, it will look good on your table too, from Adore Home shop ($55), Lumino agate coasters (these are edged in 24k gold and practical as well as stunningly beautiful) from Becker Minty and available in various colours ($195 for four), glass donuts (which make great paper weights or just fun accessories!) by George Agius from CoCo Contemporary Connoisseur ($80 each).

It takes two: Meet Arent & Pyke

The last 12 months for celebrated Sydney design duo Arent & Pyke have been full on, both personally and professionally. Juliette (Arent) got married in Sicily and Sarah-Jane (Pyke) became a mum. And that’s before we even talk about all the wonderful interior design projects they’ve been doing in between times. Read on to find out how they do it and enjoy these never-before-published photos of a recent Woollahra project.

“Being a duo is key to our sanity and success, especially in this past year!” says Sarah-Jane. “We love working together and having two directors means that we can each get time out when we need it. Luckily we were able to tag-team; Juliette’s Sicilian wedding was last July and little Pyke arrived a few months after that.

“Our personal styles can be quite different, but as a team our style has the same flavour. I think it’s the spirit of the work that is a common thread – we love interiors that feel natural, have personality, warmth and charm.” The pair really believe it’s the combination of their skills and styles coming together that ensures the best results for their clients. “There is a synergy between us that just works,” says Juliette.

Arent & Pyke have now been in business almost five years and the past year has been full of highlights including their first international project, an apartment in New York, and being included in Mitchell Oakley-Smith’s book INTERIORS Australia & New Zealand. There are now five in the Arent & Pyke team, “a fabulous and very talented gang of girls”.

The New York project came about when a Sydney-based family purchased a pied-à-terre in the Meatpacking district, just north of Greenwich Village. “They wondered if we would be open to working on a NY project,” says Sarah-Jane. “Of course we jumped at the opportunity! Upon their arrival back in New York in January, our client called us immediately. She was completely floored – she could not believe it was the same apartment she had seen and bought only months earlier. Thrilled was an understatement.”

While we all know it’s hard to break into the business, Sarah-Jane says not to give up too easily if it’s what you love. “Yes, interiors in Sydney is quite competitive, but there is always room for hardworking talented people. It’s important to have your own style, develop your design skills and know what is ‘out there’ in terms of sourcing new and interesting pieces.”

The pair, who met while working together at a leading Sydney design practice, aren’t into trends, but Sarah-Jane is happy to see the return of bold colour in interiors. “We really believe a home should be a reflection of your personality, imbued with your personal style.” Juliette adds: “Home is about comfort and love. It is surrounding yourself with things that are nurturing and give you meaning. Truth to materials is deeply embedded into our design ethos. Fake anything just doesn’t sit well with us.”

They’re both impressed by stylist Megan Morton, who they describe as “crazy talented”.  And while Sarah-Jane lists Greg Natale as a designer she admires, Juliette is a fan of Ilse Crawford’s humanistic approach to design.

Some very exciting projects are on the cards at Arent & Pyke in the latter half of this year. I’m looking forward to the ladies sharing them with us soon. For now, come back tomorrow to find out all about Juliette and Sarah-Jane’s favourite brands, blogs, colour combinations, shops and more, as well as more gorgeous images of their work, published first here on Interiors Addict.

Vogue Living’s launch of the Ilse Crawford collection for Georg Jensen

Beautiful objects, the company of design lovers, food and drink in the surrounds of a stunning house. That is a real Interiors Addict kind of night!

I was delighted to be invited to the launch of the Ilse (Crawford) Collection for Georg Jensen last night, hosted by Vogue Living. The pieces are quite gorgeous, in polished steel, brass and copper and black glass. The copper really grabbed me as you really don’t see much of it these days. Its rose gold hues are so soft and warm but the lines are simple and elegant. And brass can be so old fashioned but in this collection it is reinvented, shiny and new. The range is modern and sophisticated, and no wonder when created by British design legend Crawford. Vogue Living editor David Clark, who shared a video of him interviewing her in Milan recently, described her as one of the finest designers in the world.

Also on show was a special silver version of Ilse’s ‘Mama’ jug worth a whopping $37,000. Impressive as it was, the whole idea behind the Ilse Collection is to add a sense of ritual to everyday habits. Why not pour your water from a beautiful steel jug or drop your keys in a polished brass bowl on the way in after a long day? What a lovely idea!

It was great to catch up with so many Sydney interiors folk, including stylist Mr Jason Grant and Robyn Holt (ex Vogue Living editor and The Renovators host) who I was delighted to meet for the first time. Love her work! (Have you seen her decorating segment on The Circle?)

What I love about Georg Jensen, a Danish company steeped in history and employing the most skilled craftsmen, is its ability to do traditional and modern equally well. It’s for that reason I covet their silver cutlery as much as I do their more modern jewellery, watches and homewares. The overarching theme though, is quality. And many of Jensen’s oldest designs still have a timeless appeal and could fit well in a modern home today. You only need to spend a little time around Georg Jensen products (that seems too plain a word!) and staff to really get sucked in to the brand, its beauty and its history. And Australians everywhere agree. We’re the second biggest market outside Scandinavia! Would you believe it?

I have my eye on several pieces and, starting at $135, they’re not out of reach of the average person who appreciates timeless beautiful design and wants to add a little elegance to the everyday. Or a gift to treat someone special. I was very lucky to bring home a baby version of the steel Mama jug in my goodie bag. The only hard part is deciding where to put it…

Can you spot me in these two group shots? I really want to treat myself to the oversized Moonlight Grapes ring (Sssh! Never mind that it costs more than anything in the Ilse Collection, it’s jewellery!). It’s such a statement piece. What do you think?

A great week to look forward to!

Half the reason I’ve been hibernating on the couch this weekend trying to kick my long-running cold and wisdom tooth infection is because I NEED to be better for this coming week! I’ve been invited to so many fun events and  I’m going to be on the pages of two of my favoutite mags.

Tomorrow I’m going to the Camilla show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia thanks to HP, who look after the event’s technology.

Then on Tuesday, I’m excited to be attending the launch of Ilsa Crawford’s stunning new homewares collection for Georg Jensen at an event co-hosted by Vogue Living. It can’t fail to be fabulous really, can it? Check out some of the Ilse range below…

Then on Thursday I’m off to Koskela for the launch of the book Shibori Recreated. Can’t wait. Love the Shibori girls’ work!

And then the Hong Kong Style event at Fashion Week to round it all off on Friday. The big question is, of course, what’s a girl to wear?!

And to top it all off, the new issues of belle and Luxury Home Design, both of which I’m lucky enough to be featured in (oh, the honour!) are both out this week. Make sure you pick up a copy!

Of course, I’ll be telling you all about it here and sharing photos, so come back soon.

Design icon Ilse Crawford creates stunning collection for Georg Jensen home

This Pom is very excited that British design icon and Elle Decoration founding editor Ilse Crawford has designed a stunning new collection for Georg Jensen.

The Ilse Collection comprises a set of beautiful universal objects that turn simple daily tasks into rituals – from a series of bowls to drop keys and coins in, to a bedside box for jewellery or a watch and a candle holder to punctuate the start and end of the day. Each piece is designed with a specific function in mind, but can easily be adapted to whatever the user needs. No matter what, these pieces will bring a sense of care, of “hygge‟ – the Danish word for cosiness and comfort.

The designs have evolved from a detailed study of the history of Georg Jensen and the company’s context of Danish culture. In addition to the polished steel that Georg Jensen is known for, Ilse, who guest edited an issue of Vogue Living last year, uses solid copper, brass and black glass to bring a warm and sensual materiality to the collection.

As head of UK design firm Studioilse, Ilse, who launched the first DKNY homewares line, designs across all disciplines from interiors and product to architecture.

Her big Mama Vase for Jensen has been selected as part of the prestigious Georg Jensen Masterpiece Collection, a series of stainless steel designs originating from the iconic Sterling Silver Ambassador Collection. As a special tribute to the Ilse Collection, the Mama Vase will also be crafted in sterling silver by Jensen’s most skilled silversmiths.

The Ilse Collection comprises two vases in two sizes, two bowls, three boxes and a candle holder.

Q&A with Dana Tomic Hughes of yellowtrace

Following yesterday’s interview with Dana, I saved some of the best until last. In some refreshingly honest answers, she talks about getting over her demons by starting a blog, what makes a good designer, what she loves and hates about the job and who she admires. Well worth a read if I don’t say so myself…

ON THE BLOG

How successful has the blog been?

It started out as a hobby, however it quickly gained local and international readership which has been absolutely amazing. I am really lucky to have a little growing army of loyal and wonderful readers who make me feel so proud about my blogging achievements. I have been really fortunate to meet and connect with some incredible people since starting the blog. Receiving feedback from other designers who tell me they visit the blog for daily inspiration is also hugely satisfying. It has definitely opened a few doors for me and created countless opportunities for which I am really grateful.

On a personal level, I used to be petrified of public speaking and putting myself ‘out there’. My decision to start blogging was a conscious effort to get over myself and to ‘face my demons’ in order to become a better person. The blog has really made me believe in myself so much more and trust my own judgements, instincts and decisions so much more than ever before.

On a professional level I am constantly engaged with what’s happening in design around the world and I continue to learn, expand and broaden my visual point of reference, which sharpens my design eye and grooms me into a better designer.

ON BEING AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

What are the attributes of a successful interior designer/stylist?

They need to have a degree of left brain/right brain balance. One cannot be separated from the other as designers are both logical and creative creatures. A job of a good designer is to solve a problem first, followed by making the solution beautiful. Someone who is then able to dream up the ‘big idea’ and create an emotional value behind a brand (or a client) is a superstar in my eyes!

What do you like most about your job?

There are so many things I love, but seeing my client’s happiness after a project is completed would have to top that list. I approach my design with passion and emotion, and I always strive to separate who am I as a designer from the essence of my client, which isn’t always easy to do. I feel it is always so important to create a space that tells a story about the user, rather than about me.

And least?

It would have to be the cyclical nature of interior projects; moments of high intensity and pressure followed by quieter periods. And deadlines. I really, really don’t like deadlines! Although they say that pressure is good for you…

ON HER IDOLS

Who do you admire in the design industry?

I am in absolute awe of London-based Ilse Craford of Studioilse and her philosophy which talks about designing with a cool head and a warm heart. I also really admire the work of iconic Italian designer Paola Navone, Istanbul-based Autoban, Tokyo-based Nendo, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Lidewij Edelkoort, Rossana Orlandi for her impeccable eye and design intuition, Charles and Ray Eames for their gift of enduring design which only gets more beautiful with age… the list is endless really.

Photos: (Top) Dana’s work at The Furnace ad agency and (below) her studio, where the yellowtrace magic happens.
