Our pick of what’s new at IKEA: October 2021

This month’s IKEA launch (how is it already October?!) is all about bringing the beauty of nature indoors. The look contrasts the cosy wool textures and natural elements typical of Scandinavian design with a rustic, industrial style.

There’s two gorgeous rugs under $250, celebrated British designer Ilse Crawford has created bonfire-scented candles and the table with storage ladder is one of the most versatile pieces we’ve seen in a long time; perfect for today’s ever-changing and multipurpose homes.

Here’s our pick of what’s new…

ÄPPLARYD two-seater sofa

ÄPPLARYD is a sophisticated new sofa family – available in different sizes and colours – made with calm and comfort in mind. Its steel legs and clean lines give the sofa a balanced silhouette, while its soft cushions and tactile covers make it perfect for whiling away evenings indoors.

The rich cushions use pocket springs that mould to your shape for extra comfort, as well as being long-lasting and using less foam. What’s more, its covers are made of recycled polyester – a better option for the planet. Stylish, serene and taking steps to be more sustainable. From $799.

BEHJÄRTAD scented candle in ceramic pot

The new season is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere indoors, with elements borrowed from the natural world. A member of the BEHJÄRTAD range in collaboration with British designer Ilse Crawford, this bonfire-scented candle captures the mood perfectly. In ceramic containers, available in muted tones of dark brown and grey. $6 and $10.

HÅVERUD table with storage ladder

It’s like a pop-up work-from-home spot!

As our living spaces in urban settings get smaller, we need furniture that adapts to our specific needs and requirements. Be it for dining, studying, preparing food or your latest craft project, the HÅVERUD table is designed with versatility in mind.

With a counter-height table and a metal storage ladder, its flexible, compact design makes it a smart option for smaller living spaces, and multifaceted homes
and lifestyles alike. You’ll be inspired to take up a new hobby and get to work! $159.

SVÄRDBORG handmade, flatwoven rug

IKEA rugs have always been amazing value. With its chunky wool texture, the new SVÄRDBORG will not only provide cosiness underfoot but it’s a good-looker too. Handmade by skilled craftspeople in India and Bangladesh with good working conditions and fair wages, each SVÄRDBORG rug is a one-of-a-kind beauty. It has a tactile, pebble-like appearance, flecked with neutral-coloured yarns that have been added by hand into the weave. $249.

VAMDRUP flatwoven rug

IKEA pay homage to traditional Scandinavian handicraft with the new VAMDRUP rug. Made of warm and durable natural fibres– 100% wool, with the warp made from 100% cotton from more sustainable sources – the pattern was designed by Maria Vinka. Inspired by the historical “Munkabälte’’ weaving pattern, this eye-catching rug offers a contemporary update on tradition with bold motifs in warm and neutral tones. Handwoven by skilled artisans in India in organised weaving centres with good working conditions and fair wages, each rug’s pattern is unique in its own way. This ensures that no two products are the same. $249.

STORSLINGA LED chandelier

Sure to become a contemporary classic! With a clean, black metal frame and distinct lighting design, STORSLINGA, a new eight-arm pendant lamp, offers a contemporary update on the chandelier. The globe-shaped heads are made from high quality plastic resembling glass. The LED light emits a clear and even glow, making it suitable for atmospheric dining areas, as well as everyday workstations. The lamp’s slim design makes it a perfect choice for smaller living spaces. $95.

TVINGSTRUP rug: Designed by Indian weaver K.C. Maura, known for his inspiring hand-crafted designs, this reversible 100 per cent wool flatwoven rug combines an abstract feel with lovely earthy tones. The design is handmade in India, in organised weaving centres with good working conditions and fair wages, making it an ethical buy too. $149.

IKEA Tvingstrup

PÅDRAG vase: The perfect way to dip into the fluted glass trend with minimal damage to the hip pocket. It’s designed to look beautiful with or without flowers. $2.

Padrag vase

IKEA VOXLOV

PIMPERNÖT quilt cover and two pillowcases: Made from 80 per cent cotton derived from sustainable sources, and 20 per cent viscose, we love this design’s colour palette and bold, geometric pattern. $35.

VITKLÖVER quilt cover and pillowcase: Inspired by swimming pool tiles, we love the crisp, cool feel of this bedding. It’s got a blue base on one side and white on the other. From $25.

IKEA’s new DEKORERA collection invites a sophisticated home refresh

IKEA’s DEKORERA range is focused on the contrast and combination of shade and light, creating a multi-dimensional and sophisticated ambiance in your home. These pieces were designed to renew existing furniture items, and enhance and update living spaces without complex and expensive overhauls. This is achieved through eye-catching decorative items and textiles such as throws, pillows, rugs, bowls, vases, jugs and trays.

DEKORERA is a collection that draws from the rich colours and style of 17th Century Dutch master painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals; full of swirling, golden light, playful domestic scenes, and shadowy corners. This, combined with traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship, results in products created to add an inviting flair to your home.

The bright pattern of many of the textiles and decor items enables you to combine them with darker, or more neutral, furniture – such as an armchair or couch – to refresh the space without making any major replacements. By using a patterned throw, some contrasting cushions, and a rug (to tie this decorative moment together), you can entirely refresh the furnishings that you already own.

There’s even a new neutral cover, made of natural cotton, for your existing STRANDMON armchair, which can create the base for a fresh new style at a fraction of the cost of a new chair.

Many of these contrasting textiles were envisioned as points of interest in a shady and sophisticated living room with distinctive diamonds, textured stripes, and bold patterns.

There’s also a playful homage to the roots of the range’s inspiration, with colour-block versions of some of the most famous works by Vermeer and Da Vinci (as seen above on the shelf). They are not only decorative pieces, but also function as trays that can be used to carry your morning coffee or tea! The candlesticks (seen on top of the cabinet, above) are striking design accessories as well, playing with bold shapes and colours while retaining their functionality.

The rounded, gentle forms of DEKORERA’s bowls, jugs, and vases reflect traditional Northern European crafts and techniques. Released just in time for Christmas, they inspire thoughts of a rustic and rural simplicity, delivering a much-needed respite in a time such as this.

IKEA catalogue celebrates 70th anniversary with new format

For the first time, this year’s IKEA Catalogue (out from Tuesday) has been turned into a ‘how-to’ booklet full of problem-solving tips, hands-on ideas and practical advice in a response to a time where life at home has never been more important.

Now more than ever, people are faced with the desire to create homes that suit their ever-changing needs and desires. IKEA wants to provide Australians with the knowledge to make these big-impact changes. This dynamic version of the IKEA Catalogue 2021 is focused on small budgets and smaller spaces. Each page has been filled with practical ways to make homes around the world cosier, smarter, more sustainable and more beautiful.

“As we all spend more time at home, our spaces are working harder than ever before. For many of us, the reality of life at home means spaces and budgets that are shrinking in size. That’s why we’ve focused the solutions in this year’s catalogue on affordability and small space living”, says Christine Gough, country home furnishing and retail design manager for IKEA Australia.

The 2021 catalogue presents the importance of beautiful bathrooms, delicious kitchens and living and dining rooms you’ll fall in love with. Customers will also be offered practical tips such as mixing patterns, showing off your style and how to organise absolutely everything.

COMING SOON: A new range of bamboo doors for the longstanding IVAR storage range.

Despite our lives at home changing, some of the solutions to grace the pages of the catalogue have continued for decades – like the much loved BILLY bookcase, which continues to be a customer favourite more than 40 years on. What’s also stayed the same is IKEA’s commitment to inspire people to live healthier and more sustainable lives.

A BILLY bookcase sells approximately every five seconds! We love them with glass doors on.

“We want to help people create a home that’s not only better for them, but better for the planet too – one water-saving tap and LED light bulb at a time,” says Christine.

Each year, IKEA conducts in-depth research and home visits with people around the world. Through this research they’re able to find out people’s frustrations, dreams, hopes and desires for their homes.

There are six different homes in this year’s catalogue, each representing a different living situation, including a young couple in their first apartment, a growing family in a rental, and a money-savvy couple with two young children in a one-bedroom apartment.

With a range of new products featured in the IKEA Catalogue 2021, customers can find the practical advice, solutions and advice for creating a smarter, more flexible, and better life at home.

Customers can access the catalogue online at www.ikea.com.au or collect a copy from their local store from next Tuesday 1 September 2020.

IKEA wants to buy back your old furniture in Sydney

If you’re looking to part ways with the MALM bed frame you bought for your first apartment or update the wall of BILLY bookcases in your living room, IKEA has found a way to help out with the launch of their furniture take-back program.

In a new initiative to help reduce waste, encourage upcycling and create a more sustainable future, the Swedish furniture giant is allowing Sydneysiders to give their old IKEA furniture a second life by returning it in exchange for a voucher. The returned furniture will then be sold on to new customers at the IKEA Tempe store.

The announcement follows new findings from IKEA Australia’s annual People & Planet Positive Report 2018, which reveals that it’s possible Australians have thrown away 13.5 million pieces of furniture that could have been recycled, reused and repaired. In a first for Australia, the new scheme aims to reduce the amount of furniture ending up in landfill and is part of IKEA’s goal to be 100% circular and climate positive by 2030.

In a win-win situation, this initiative will benefit those who are looking to score some affordable IKEA products for their homes. And, unlike the unpredictability of quality when it comes to buying secondhand from Facebook or Gumtree, this service will ensure that all items are in good knick before being resold again.

If the news has got your inner eco-warrior itching, you’ll be pleased to hear the process is pretty simple!

First, fill out an online form and email photos of your old IKEA furniture which will then be assessed by the IKEA team. If your furniture qualifies for the service you’ll have 14 days to bring your furniture to IKEA Temple where you will also receive your voucher. The furniture will then be put up for sale at the same value as the voucher given to you.

Although this take-back service is only being piloted at the IKEA Sydney Tempe store, if the program proves to be successful the company will look to roll out the service nationally.

To celebrate the launch of the take-back service, IKEA Tempe is unveiling its first ever Circular Living Pop-up Store, which will be open for eight weeks. The pop-up store will give consumers an in-depth look at the recyclable and renewable materials that make up their favourite IKEA products.

From turning plastic PET Bottles into KUNGSBACKA kitchen cabinetry, to left over glass into the IKEA PS 2017 Vase, the pop-up will showcase the stories behind the products while educating customers on the importance and value of the circular economy through sustainability workshops.

“IKEA is focused on ensuring all our products are designed from the very beginning with the intention to be repaired, reused, resold and eventually recycled, ” says Kate Ringvall, Sustainability Manager at IKEA Australia. “60% of our range is currently based on renewable materials.  Our utmost priority is to generate as little waste as possible.”

“With the launch of our Circular Living Pop-up Store and IKEA Tempe Take-Back Service, we want to make it easier than ever for Australians to live the sustainable life they desire.”

Here are some of the best new products coming to IKEA Australia in February:

KUNGSBACKA kitchen fronts

The KUNGSBACKA kitchen fronts are the first in IKEA to be made out of 100% recycled materials. The KUNGSBACKA fronts are made from recycled wood covered in a foil made from recycled PET bottles, making them a sustainable choice that doesn’t compromise on quality, design or price.

The matte anthracite-coloured fronts not only look beautiful, but are easy to clean and feature anti-fingerprint surfaces. KUNGSBACKA fronts fit with the METOD kitchen system so you can create literally thousands of different combinations to squeeze the most out of every centimetre of kitchen space.

New ways to style your KALLAX

The popular IKEA KALLAX range (the new and improved version of EXPEDIT) will get a series of unique new inserts in February to help add style and function to this IKEA staple. I think these inserts are absolutely fantastic and will completely lift your storage game! I want to run out and buy myself a KALLAX unit right now so I can pimp it with these gorgeous, expensive-looking accessories. The great thing about the KALLAX is it’s as at home in the home office as it is in the lounge room and with these new inserts, it will definitely look a lot more high end and chic, as well as making it way more useful for storing and displaying your items. Exciting!

Lighting tips from Ikea Australia’s head of interior design

By Tiffany Buckins

One area within home furnishing that people often struggle with is lighting. Most people will only use general lighting to light their bedrooms and bathrooms, which can lead to these rooms lacking ambience and functionality.

Zg31pe-mYj2KrSq31_FwuZkoruBFI2_d16emdx5TE48,hPDchKomWZ2EobmBNMiEEaTwkIYIMVx4gYgg8GZ5A7o,CtKtn_UBnGmOxZpnhyHYs3qKz9qaHk51giVoVne-Xi0

So to ensure you create a beautiful, balanced room, make sure you have the correct lighting. It is important to remember there are three types of lighting functions: general, task and mood.

Follow my top tips for successful lighting:

  • Think of each activity you do, step back and evaluate the lighting levels. Can you really see well enough to perform that task? Adding extra light sources can really improve how you feel and interact within your space.
  • General lighting is just that; typically these lights have a wider pool of light and create an overall good lighting level. These are generally down lights or ceiling lights.
  • Task lighting is a concentrated light source that helps you see better when performing a specific task. Think adjustable floor lamps for reading, integrated wardrobe lighting to help you find the right shoes and vanity lighting to ensure your makeup is just right.Ldlfymdgx8Rx64wc1WcXdcBAcy680p9TQActuhKHcw0,puAnNP80uzObWpwnvsZ2ZXrf0adKKuD0x8KSoaoaPrI,wgE2BppUorcNTg6ZMxI8Bwdurf7PQgEwZfqc8cyiFR4,NUOkQIqSbZtqYv9smvaxpJXIfEjHlArgIyW-t-7wR2s,ZwgXLnqsljZZpTbn70V7ua81au7O_9fFeE3C4Jzc73w
  • Mood lighting creates ambience; it doesn’t serve a functional purpose but it makes a space feel more harmonious.
  • Cable management is a big frustration in people’s homes. Using a cable management box is a great way to keep the cords and wires hidden and allows you to still charge your phone or iPad.
  • Make the switch to LED: LED is the biggest thing in light since electric light was invented. It shines for over 20 years, can be built into lamps for new designs, and uses a sliver of the energy of incandescent bulbs. LED lights are the sustainable choice, and the smart, functional choice.

IKEA Australia’s hotly anticipated Ilse Crawford collaboration

It may be many months away, but the hotly anticipated SINNERLIG COLLECTION by Ilse Crawford will be launched in all IKEA Australia stores this August.

SINNERLIG COLLECTION ikea interiors addict

A collaboration between IKEA and internationally renowned interior decorator and designer, Ilse, the collection will offer people top of the line design at typical IKEA prices. Which of course we love!

SINNERLIG COLLECTION ikea interiors addict 3

With more than 30 pieces for the home, they explore the beauty and tactility of raw materials and celebrate the imperfections that arise in the process of their production.

SINNERLIG COLLECTION ikea interiors addict 2

The collection can loosely be categorised into three groups: working, dining and lounging. Each group has a piece of furniture in the centre — the trestle table, dining table, and the daybed. Although the collection works neatly in these settings, everything has been developed so that you can decide how you wish to fit these pieces into your home.

One of the most striking features in the collection is the use of cork. Cork is renewable, durable, an acoustic softener, waterproof and easy to clean. Each piece is designed to engage our senses and connect us to our homes.

IKEA wedding table styling challenge

I’m no stylist. I think we all know that…

But when Ikea Australia asked me to take part in its wedding table styling challenge, as a bride-to-be, I thought it sounded like a lot of fun! And it was.

ikeaThe challenge was to create any kind of wedding table setting using nothing but what you can buy in Ikea, apart from large ticket items like the table itself, for under $500. And above is the result, my very pink and floral dessert station. I know it isn’t very good but hey, you can’t take yourself too seriously! Everything there, edibles aside, is from Ikea, right down to the faux flowers (really not that bad, don’t you think?), the frames, the napkins, the table covering, all of it. Tempting as it was to get one of my many stylists friends to do it for me, I think you can probably tell I didn’t!
