Laminex add a whopping 17 new options in latest collection

Laminex have added 17 options to their expansive range in the new Living Pigments and Calm Character collections. They explore warm, earthy tones and rich greens that bring energy and optimism, and the subtle organic textures of stone and timber.

Wardrobe doors in charred red, Kalamata

They offer a world of possibility for those wanting to incorporate pops of organic earthy colours into their spaces, whether they be residential, commercial, or for work.

Morrocan Clay, reminiscent of the dusty North African terracotta

“With this new collection, we wanted to create a modern yet classic take on neutrals, offering a muted version of colours that had previously not been thought of as natural tones,” says Sacha Leagh-Murray, general manager at Laminex.

Pastel forest green with Hushed Pine

These include a warm, dusty red (Moroccan Clay), a dramatic blackened red (Kalamata) and a pastel forest green (Hushed Pine).

Conversely, the Calm Character range showcases two new woodgrains and eight new patterns that celebrate the textural beauty of marble, terrazzo and timber. These decors sit harmoniously with other existing materials and finishes.

Figured Limestone and Surf

The woodgrains include a cool walnut (Danish Walnut) and a worn charcoal (Shou Sugi) which emulates the glossy, cracked surface of  Japanese charred timber.

Virtual reality: An affordable way to design your home

Sometimes the best ideas come to you unexpectedly, which was the case for Milray Park founder Sally Bevan. Struggling to decorate her home, she was overwhelmed by the magnitude of options. Furniture shops left her feeling directionless, while interiors on Pinterest found her questioning how on Earth she could bring them to life, especially with a budget! So, Sally enlisted the help of an interior designer online and via email they came up with a design she was happy with.

Sally

Jump forward a few months and Milray Park was conceived, with the hope no one else would ever have to deal with the same stress. 100% online, the platform allows you to access all of the tools you need to achieve a beautiful home. “We’ve plugged in the best interior designers, custom built the eDecorating platform for seamless designer-client collaboration and have disrupted the pricing model to provide a full design service at $299 flat-fee per room.”

The home of Milray Park client Erin Smith

The home of Milray Park client Erin Smith

However, Milray Park’s recent development is the most exciting, with the launch of the ‘View my room in VR’ service. This allows you to fully visualise your new space with a realistic 3D rendering, so you can actually try pieces of furniture in your home before you buy. And the best part? It’s only $99 per room. “Before virtual reality, it was impossible to know exactly how your furniture would look like in your home,” explains Sally. “Now, our customers can make much better purchasing decisions and with confidence. This is particularly important when buying pieces like dining tables and couches, which are investment items that you don’t want to get wrong.”

Erin

So the big question: Does it work? Well according to client Erin Smith: “Yes! When Milray Park suggested using ‘View my room in VR’ we jumped at the idea of seeing our space perfectly designed, before hitting the buy button for our big ticket items. The VR service gave us full confidence in our design.”

Before Milray Park came to Erin’s rescue!

Before Milray Park came to Erin’s rescue!

While eDecorating can seem a bit daunting, for peace of mind Milray Park offers a designer callout service (for $149 per visit), however both Sally and Erin agree it’s not necessary. “I fell in love with the concept of having a beautiful, professionally designed space without the huge price tag,” says Erin. “With Milray Park I was able to bring to life the interior design I envisaged and be involved in the process.”

Milena joins a boutique homewares shopping tour in VIC

They say Melbourne is the home of shopping – but Alex Butta is the queen of boutique interiors shopping.

Images by Nicole Jennifer Photography

Have you ever set out to add some beautiful and unique décor items to your home, but given up because you didn’t know where to look? I know I have.

That’s where Alex comes in. Under her design business The White Room Interiors, she started the shopping tours as a way to explore Victoria’s most interesting interior design and decoration spots. The result? A range of meticulously curated days out that will leave you with arms full of interior goodies and a belly full of bubbly – just don’t forget those credit cards!

I was lucky enough to accompany The White Room on their most recent Passion of the Peninsula tour. A truly unique interior shopping tour – I think it’s safe to say that it’s the only thing of its kind in Victoria – the Peninsula tour offers a way to explore some incredible home décor stores in Mount Eliza, Mornington, Red Hill, Flinders and Blairgowrie.

Not only did I get to meet 11 other wonderful ladies as I shopped the day away (and boy did I shop up a storm), I was spoilt with a delectable lunch at a Mornington gem – and even left with a host of styling tips from the one and only Alex. Note to self: stick to three cushions for a three-seater sofa!

To top it all off, the tour included a comfy mini bus to get us around (no need to worry about parking!), and a chance to meet store owners (who were very generous with drinks, nibbles and discounts to sweeten the tour) and learn their back stories. Although they were all wonderful, my favourites included Eden nursery (because I’m a sucker for greenery) and Greedi Lulu (because their products are as unique as their name).

This intimate boutique experience is sure to leave you feeling inspired, creative and with lots of wonderful new things for your home.

The White Room offers three shopping tours ($160 each), with each focusing on unique interior stores in different parts of Melbourne (and the Mornington Peninsula). Check out The White Room Interiors for dates, and treat yourself to a shopping date while supporting local businesses!

The ever so talented Alex also offers interior decorating services for those of you that want that perfectly Instagram-able home (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?).

For more about The White Room.

Disclosure: Milena took part in the shopping tour as a guest of The White Room Interiors. Positive coverage was not guaranteed and this is an honest and unpaid review of her experience.

What’s new in kids room interiors for 2017?

By Amelia Coote-Harris

When asked to picture a typical kid’s room, most people likely summon the classic pieces or themes – blue for boy, pink for girl, a rocking chair, a desk, and maybe a toy box. That would have been accurate a decade ago. Now, as we enter 2017, I’m pleased to say times have changed and kids’ rooms are no longer just about basics but are instead all about beautiful interiors.

animals-1
Image: Taylored Dots

The last decade has seen children’s bedrooms go from necessities to a designer’s dream space. Kids’ rooms have become extensions of a family’s excitement for their little ones, and their rooms are no longer forgotten as part of the greater home design. The dynamism of children’s rooms is especially exciting – whether it’s statement pieces hung from the wall, bold new art, or a twist on something vintage, kids’ rooms today are sophisticated representations of the bright minds living in them.

Key trends in the space will be on display at this year’s Life Instyle, Australia’s boutique trade event for anyone working in the interior design and retail space. With a whole section dedicated to the little ones, Kids Instyle, the event will showcase emerging trends, brands, and products on the cooler side of style and design. The following are a few trends bound to be big business in the next year – so count this as your sneak peek into the next big thing in the playful world of kids’ rooms!

Classic pieces, with a difference

We’re seeing a lot of designers holding on to the classic pieces you’ll find in nurseries or kids’ rooms, but adding a modern twist to them. Rocking chairs are a great example of this. This furniture item is still well adored, and incredibly practical for many nurseries, but they’ve undergone a transformation over time. No longer boring wooden pieces, rocking chairs are now modern staples, with a reinvention in style and comfort that provide a playful but perfect addition to any room. Hobbe Home create rocking chairs perfect for the modern home; made with longevity in mind, the style is elegant and fit for a kids’ room from toddler to primary school. This type of range proves that style is priority, and with matching ottomans and cushions, the most comfortable seat in the house will also, easily, be the most stylish.

Grey

Once maligned for being boring, grey is very quickly becoming one of the coolest colours to feature. It’s the ultimate neutral, not so stark as white, still with warmth to it, and absolutely modern. It provides a base for colour combinations to brighten up the room for smaller ones with pops of or yellow, and can progress to a palette of black and white, or modern navy and white – to will grow with children. Also a perfect gender-neutral tone, grey provides limitless design possibilities.

Animals

Animals have been, and always will be, a fun way to accesorise a child’s room. Each child has a favourite – the lion, giraffe or even a hippo, and featuring these majestic animals automatically brings excitement into a space. 2017 is all about animal expression, but the modern twist is to feature them as sophisticated images. Taylored Dots is the perfect example of this – with their handcrafted animal motifs the colours are neutral, but sophisticated enough so as to keep each feature modern and clean. Whether they’re statement pieces or the base for pairing complementary colours into the room, animals have never been more in style when it comes to creating a truly exciting room that will last until the little one is a lot older.

Wellness

Health and wellness has been a prevalent trend in the adult world for a long time, and while a child’s health is always a parent’s first concern, the ethos is moving from physical wellbeing to décor too. Accessories such as candles with relaxing scents, natural fibres for linen, and even crystals are accessories parents are choosing to build a child’s room. With more accessibility, these methods of restoring wellness are becoming increasingly popular. Stoned Crystals is a great example, offering an entire range of crystals to help centre energy, with display stands and jars too, bringing the dated concept of crystals into a modern room design.

Look to your heart to avoid styler’s remorse

There’s nothing worse than a patchwork décor, where you’ve let your imagination run wild to the degree you’ve created home disharmony!

The most successful, feel good decors give a sense of flow, space and cohesion. That’s not to say each room has to be the same – far from it – but the rooms need to work together to tell a story about the entire home.

shapes-origami-white-satin-250x250-prices-from-109-00-per-m2-1

Beaumont Tiles know renovators and re-doers spend a lot of time researching. According to communications & design specialist, Christie Wood, the company records one million plus page views on its website each month.

“Choosing a décor is one of the hardest jobs you’ll have around the home because it is so subjective and your choices can sometimes depend on the mood you’re in on a particular day,” she said.

Avoid styler’s remorse with Christie’s tips and tricks.

Don’t overcapitalise on your creativity. Know where to draw the line and err on the side of simplicity.

Build your masterpiece over time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and if you’re no decorating wiz, choose one fabulous stand out feature piece and add to it over time – a much safer option than trying to create an instant masterpiece and getting it completely wrong!

615006-borgogna-bianco-gl-porc-rect-597x597-prices-from-66-50

Don’t outsource to a friend or relative. This is your home, your style. If you are outsourcing, make sure you give firm input about the atmosphere and ambience that’s going to make you happy.

Find your happy space. You have to be comfortable in your surroundings and it has to balance with your personality so go with your heart. Close your eyes – are you happiest at a beach, in the snow, in a hipster café with a steaming joe? Do you find beauty in raw, natural landscapes, or does a five star hotel float your boat? Or maybe you love different formations and shapes. Use this personal intel to guide your happy space. Check out Beaumont Tiles whatstyleamI.com.au to help figure it out.

1000239-scales-neon-coral-120x120-prices-from-14-50-each-1

Choose the golden threads that will pull it together.  In design there are some basic rules that will centre your décor and decision making. Think of how you are going to apply or arrange your elements. It may be using contrast or emphasis with your colour scheme you use (in various intensities) throughout your home. It may be a particular repeated shape – for example geometrics. Or you could choose a genre, like art deco and create a harmony in your room.

Are you a risk taker? This one’s easy. If you take risks generally in, then take a risk with a dramatic background canvas. If you generally don’t push the envelope, now’s probably not the time so choose a more neutral background, and take a risk with an easily replaced feature item such as a rug or pendant lighting.  There’s still plenty of beautify neutrals in shapes and textures, even natural stones, that will make your home a masterpiece to be admired.

Featuring 20 decors, that not only reflect global design trends, but more importantly, fulfil the growing needs of Australian customers, the range includes warm woodgrains, veined stone and greys that inject style, creativity and desirability.

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 2.26.48 pm

The new range also has the added benefits of Protec+ for enhanced hygiene performance. A proven antimicrobial technology that inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungus on surfaces, Protec+ ensures protection against microbes.

Also taking the new decors to the next level is the recent advances meaning fabricators can now achieve a much tighter-edge angle, replicating the look of a stone slab at a fraction of the price. Australians have always liked the idea of a benchtop option that provides the look of stone with the affordability of laminate and now they can finally have it!

Industrial furniture makers fifteenthirtyeight on starting their business by accident

After a fruitless search for a coffee table that didn’t hurt their eyes or make them use allen keys(!), couple Kitty Danger and Al Barras decided to take matters into their own hands, literally.

“We spent a Sunday in the workshop and created something that we thought was pretty cool,” says Kitty. “Once we finished we uploaded it onto Instagram and we were inundated with requests for orders. Et voila fifteenthirtyeight was immaculately conceived.”

z6YszLOwWoESQLCPdgGBSfXuaF0VW2IPGQ0-Ojdlvzo

Creating industrial furniture and home decor, they predominantly use steel (their name actually reflects the melting point of iron — 1538 degrees) for its industrial aesthetic and strength. Also dabbling in brass, copper, glass, marble, timber and concrete, they try to keep all their materials within that minimal and industrial feel, not forgetting that little bit of luxe!

oPy15Yx1b4hvD1-h3neP8xleVczIAoL10MugV600aBs

[contextly_sidebar id=”KxdwwXBvJjMmC4i7MeMfbMSWM90rxxT1″]With their range expanding almost weekly, they currently have coffee tables, side consoles, stools and plant hangers in production, all made by hand in their Brisbane studio. Only doing small runs of each design, they also spend a lot of time on bespoke pieces for commissions. “Having the ability to produce pieces from start to finish in-house means that we can work closely with our fab private and commercial clients to make some pretty awesome one-off pieces,” explains Kitty. “This also allows us the time to work on some exciting new designs and some bigger pieces… hello beds and couches!”

xKEh5wbU_m4JE7MWeNEZ6EFRznyegVBnWTdld6y3nz0

Prior to launching fifteenthirtyeight late last year, Kitty spent her time working in construction and PR (what can’t this woman do?!) and Al worked as a qualified mechanic in the film and TV industry. Now, having both jumped head first into furniture design, Kitty is happy to say her building experience still comes in useful. “Al is a welding wizard and can fabricate literally anything, but luckily I still know my way around power tools, which comes in handy in the studio!”

WeEQUGAKajwJqzc1vHclO4pV-Jl8Y3BVoOXu48AiBaI

Inspired by sculptural art and mid-century lines, the duo put great emphasis on creating beautiful angles, lines and shadows. “When we’re designing we start with a sketch and a rough idea of what we want to achieve. However, this usually changes when we make the prototype and see the angles come to life, so sometimes the finished product is amazingly different to the idea we started with. In terms of production, we cut each piece and weld or braze the base together. Then it’s polished or powder coated and fitted with glass, marble, timber or concrete, packaged up and shipped to its new home.”

Stylist Tim Neve’s book takes clichés out of coastal interiors

Believing coastal decorating had become extremely cliché, stylist Tim Neve decided to take matters into his own hands, writing the new interiors book, Sandcastles.

NEVE_SC_Anchorage_106
“When you hear the phrase coastal decorating, I don’t blame you if you shudder,” says Tim. “For too long, faux starfish and mass-produced Gone Fishin’ signs have reigned supreme and muddied the waters of what should be the clearest, most authentic inspiration in home styling.”

_93A7110

Beautifully designed, Sandcastles sees Tim explore many versions of coastal style: from the elegant, salt-bleached driftwood neutrals of Beachcomber and the retro zing of Endless Summer to the rich velvets and vintage collections of Bohemian and the lush tropical foliage of Islander.

Culburra_2 3895 1

As an avid collector of vintage wares, Tim uses statement pieces and salvaged objects to achieve timeless interiors. Drawing on inspiration from his surroundings, Sandcastles encourages you to do the same. Interwoven throughout, Tim has also provided a wealth of practical advice, moodboards, colour palettes, stylist’s tips and insider secrets.

Newcastle-based Tim is the creative force behind Australian Coastal Home magazine and has spent most of the past decade working in styling and writing features for magazines including Real Living, Home Ideas, Country Home Ideas and Modern Home.

Australian kids room ideas: with BabyDonkie

Having three children of her own and 20(!) nieces and nephews, Dong-Maria Le has always had a lot of kids’ presents to buy! Launching BabyDonkie while on maternity leave in 2012, Dong-Maria specialises in products for babies and kids. Influenced by colour, all things retro and Scandinavian design, she offers beautiful pieces that won’t break the bank, perfect if you’re styling on a budget. “Changing the style of a kid’s room can be quite affordable by adding cushions, paper storage bags, prints, wall stickers or wooden/felt banners. Many of these can be purchased for around $30-to-50.”

While cheap and cheerful accessories are ideal for styling a kid’s room, Dong-Maria recommends investing in larger pieces, especially those that will grow with your child. “Must-buy products for a kid’s room are the investment pieces; products like a bed, storage (bedside or clothing) and lighting are a must.

baby donkie interiors addict 4

“Adding something personal is a beautiful touch, such as a favourite toy or book, or a print or light with their initial on it.”

With Dong-Maria’s favourite trends currently being monochrome with a pop of colour and fun prints like animals, ice cream and fruit in delicious colours, her dream kids room would contain all of this and a lot more! “My dream room is a tidy room! I would love for it to include a reading nook, a corner for pretend play such as a wooden kitchen, a teepee to hide in, beautiful prints and favourite toys on display and lots and lots of storage!”

6 accessories to add some wow to your coffee table

If there’s one place you can have some fun with decorating, it’s the coffee table. If you’re the sort of person who reads this blog, I’m guessing you’re more likely to be creating little vignettes and stacks of coffee table books (they’re called that for a reason) that express your style, than just thinking of this piece of furniture as somewhere for your remotes and a cup of tea. Am I right?

coffee table accessories

A well styled coffee table makes such a difference to a living room! I have so much fun with my own coffee table. I’m constantly arranging and rearranging, adding fresh flowers, swapping around candles, changing up that month’s favoured books from my collection (possibly colour coding their spines, yes).

I’ve put together these top picks (above) if you are looking to add some instant wow factor, style or a talking point to your own coffee table. I hope you like them. Of course you should make your coffee table yours and a reflection of you, just like the rest of your home. This is just intended as food for thought (especially the donut!). If you don’t have a coffee table (really?!) these could work on a buffet, side table or even bookcase.

Where to buy

Clockwise from top left: Tom Dixon Eclectic candles (the marble lid doubles as a coaster later) from dedece+ ($113 each), gold sculptural spheres (perfect on top of your book stack!) from West Elm (from $49), Ilse vase (the perfect size for small; blooms on your coffee table and heavy enough not to get knocked over easily) from Georg Jensen ($120), the new Adore Home book is not only full of great Aussie interior inspiration, but with its gold cover and hot pink spine, it will look good on your table too, from Adore Home shop ($55), Lumino agate coasters (these are edged in 24k gold and practical as well as stunningly beautiful) from Becker Minty and available in various colours ($195 for four), glass donuts (which make great paper weights or just fun accessories!) by George Agius from CoCo Contemporary Connoisseur ($80 each).
