Kip & Co give summer a neon glow with on trend lights

This summer, bedding and lifestyle brand Kip & Co have added to their growing wall art collection with a capsule of fun and frivolous, limited edition neon lights.

There are three funky options to brighten up your life: spunky peace hand, a dreamy rainbow and, in collaboration with Electric Confetti, the signature Kip & Co banana!

The lights came about when Kip’s Kate Heppell and Natalie Jarvis (Electric Confetti) had the lightbulb moment (indulge the pun!) to join forces and create unique designs that would add serious artistic spunk to Aussie homes.

All lights use LED neon, and are quick and easy to hang and connect. Kip & Co lights range from $449 t0 $1,195. They’re not cheap but if you’re looking to make a big statement, look no further!

5 interior designer tips for getting your home summer ready

By Chloe Matters

When getting your home ready for summer, the main objective is to clear out the clutter and bring in the light and life that the warmer months provide.

TomMarkHenry 1

It is the hardest thing to look objectively at a space you live in every day and edit it, but it is crucial! I take this back to a saying I have: “What captures your attention controls your life.” This is relevant to every aspect of your life, especially your home. If you live in clutter and darkness this will control your home and the way you enjoy it.

Below are five easy things you can do to start the process of creating a summer ready home for you to enjoy.

1. Strip everything back to the necessities

This is the first and most important step. Think of this like doing a wardrobe clear out and putting your winter clothes into storage. In one part of the room, leave out all the items that are relevant to the weather like linen and cotton sheets, candles, plants and summery small accessories. Once you have stripped back everything you can revaluate what is important in the room, you can also rearrange the furniture to maximise space and flow then you can start adding again, but keep it simple, summer is about space, light and air, not about clutter.

2. Maximise the light and flow in your home

This is a really important part of life that people take for granted, your body and mind respond so sensitively to light. In the summer months we crave light and open spaces. Evaluate the direction of your furniture and how it is placed in the space; what is your couch facing? Can your see the outside from your bed? What is the flow like in this space? Can I add a window seat? Rearrange your space to maximise flow, take out items and move items around to allow for the best access to natural light and movement within the space.

Evaluate the colour of your walls; is this off white too beige? Could this wall be lighter to add more light to this room? Would my art stand out more on another finish? Painting your walls or adding a new finish like V-joint timber panelling can be fun and very rewarding.

3. Add plants everywhere

A really good way to feel connected to the outdoors is by bringing them in. By adding plants, some small and some large, you will not only clean your indoor air but you will bring life inside, making you feel more connected to the outdoors. You can do this by adding succulents to water in a vase (this way there is no upkeep) large plants like rubber plants which are basically foolproof or Fig trees, which need a bit of extra love. You can also buy or pull from the garden large palm leaves and place them in a vase.

4. Make sure the materials and fabrics in your home are relevant

If you have heavy throw pillows, rugs, curtains and thick sheets, I would try swapping these out. For pillows and sheets, keep to light colours or patterns in cotton and linen. For rugs, change to sisals or thin mats or take the rug off the floor and expose the floor boards. For curtains, change to linens and sheer fabrics to let as much light in as possible. This is like having a summer and winter wardrobe for your home. I personally prefer summery fabrics all year round.

5. Bring in summer scents

Your brain works in a multi-sensory way, so create a multi-sensory environment that you enjoy. A good way to do this is by adding candles, scents to air-conditioning or flowers. There is nothing better than walking into a fresh smelling home at the end of a hot day.

Light bulbs that are actually quite cool, promise!

There’s no denying talking about light bulbs is boring (I do not recommend it for dinner party banter!) however, Philips’ three new ranges of LED bulbs do warrant some chat. Bear with me.

Philips led bulb
Philips Scene Switch LED bulb

The first is Philips’ Scene Switch LED bulb, which is actually pretty cool. The two-in-one design allows homeowners to enjoy the benefits of warm white light and cool daylight in a single light bulb, with just a flick of a regular light switch and no extra wiring required.

For many, both white light and cool daylight are important for different tasks. For example, someone who works from home (which I often do) can kick-start their day with cool daylight, which helps in concentration, and switch to warm white light in the evening when it is time to relax and unwind. Sounds good to me!

Also on offer is the Philips LED Deco Classic bulb, which comes in eight unique, vintage filament-look designs. Not only does it produce beautiful, ambient light it also delivers energy savings in comparison to current incandescent filament bulbs and has an estimated lifetime of up to 15,000 hours.

Lastly, Philips have launched the next-generation (Gen5) affordable LED bulb range for the home, which is available in varying sizes. Featuring a new full-moon design to allow for a wider angle of light distribution, it produces ambient lighting that is bright yet comfortable for the eyes. Philips’ LED technology also means the bulb consumes up to 88% less energy than incandescent bulbs and is estimated to last up to 15 years, offering greater energy savings over longer periods of time.

IKEA’s science fiction inspired pendant wins a Red Dot Award

Having always been a huge fan of science fiction movies and video games, designer David Wahl was inspired to create the IKEA PS Pendant Lamp. And looking at it, it’s not hard to see its resemblance to a spaceship or an intelligent space weapon!

With a simple to use mechanism, all you need to do is pull the strings and the shape of the lamp shade as well as the intensity of the light changes. When closed, only a small amount of light finds its way out, while when fully opened, more light spreads out, creating interesting light effects on the wall.

Unique and affordable (just $69), the IKEA PS Pendant Lamp has now been awarded a Red Dot Award, one of the best-respected design awards in the world. Receiving ‘An Honourable Mention’ for its well-executed design work, thought-out design solution and mechanically simple but effective dimmer function; it was assessed by a 38 member jury among 4,928 other designs, representing 56 countries.

With more interior designers and architects starting to appreciate lighting as a transformative element in design, it makes sense that this shift in thinking would bring lighting out of the ceiling and into the open.

“Lighting can add value to interiors on a myriad of levels”, explains Brightgreen founder, CEO and head of design, David O’Driscoll. “Our Surface Series lights offer a sleek, minimal aesthetic and superb light quality that uses Tru-Colour technology to actually enhance the appearance of skin tones, interior colours and design details and textures.”

The collection confirms the trend towards surface-mounted lighting in Australia for both style and sustainability. In addition to adding design value to interiors, the Surface Series stands to increase overall home energy ratings by eliminating the need for gaps in insulation often required for recessed downlights.

Natural light and your house design, by Joe Snell

Last year, I was approached at a family barbecue by a friend of a friend who had a problem. The problem was she said, that it was incredibly hard getting her family going in the morning and that breakfast was simply a form of extended torment. After much discussion back and forth it did not take long to define the primary problem was most likely a lack of morning sun (by the way, we did discuss the quality of the coffee on offer – it was apparently good — and then again we had to consider the kids too!). It turned out the breakfast area was in the middle of the house without a window or skylight in near sight and, apart from the clock, it was hard to tell what time of day it was.

Morning light is one of the most fundamental, and in my opinion most overlooked, elements of a home and a lifestyle. Now with our knowledge of daylight and our circadian rhythms, it is a no-brainer to ensure that we have some sun on the breakfast table! The morning light will literally wake you and your family up and get you going!

One of Joe's projects where he has added a skylight in the breakfast area
One of Joe’s projects where he has added a skylight in the breakfast area

It is a common issue with many houses I have visited over the years having poorly located breakfast areas. It has always surprised me to see how many families have spent their good lives having breakfast (arguably the most important meal of the day) in dark and depressing spaces.

In fact, when designing a house, well before I worry about the breakfast table styling and accessories (for example what type of bowl to have your cornflakes out of), I make sure that there is going to be some sun on the breakfast table. Imagine how much more of a happy and productive day you and your family are going to have when you have enjoyed the twinkle of some winter sun off your spoon of strawberries! And knowing you are going to have some morning sun, imagine then what styling you could enjoy – is it going to be Scandinavian blonde timber with a navy cloth, or bright daisy yellow napkins against a pure white slat bench? The inspiration for the space and the experience is so much greater because the fundamental is right, and in this case it is the capturing of morning light.

So, how to make immediate change? Well, first of all, find out where the morning sun is coming into your home. Seek it out and adjust your planning; sometimes it means changing rooms to suit a breakfast table and chairs catching the sun. Never be afraid of light as it is always better to take it away with well-placed blinds or screens than not have it at all – particularly in winter.

Once you have located the morning sun in your home, freshen up the space with lighter and brighter colours to reflect the light and make it a morning place – whites, yellows, light coloured timbers – it does not have to be the whole room – it can just be the breakfast area. Once you have brightened the space consider a large mirror. They can be a great addition if placed in such a way to reflect the outside in – whether it is a view, the garden, a tree or even the sky. Remember that the early morning light is quite horizontal, particularly in winter, so a mirror can literally bring the morning into a space and all the beautiful light reflections are an added bonus.

Image source: Dwell. Click for details
Image source: Dwell. Click for details

In terms of a renovation, do all of the above and literally design around the morning light – include windows and skylights that are designed to capture and funnel light into your breakfast space. Good quality skylights these days are so much more available and better priced than in the past. Some even include electric sun blinds and automatically close when they sense rain. Give priority to your place of breakfast in your design so that it is located on the edge of your house, preferably near an outdoor area, so on those perfect mornings you can easily spill outside. Consider as well the convenience of its location as for many of us, breakfast can be a bit of a rush.

At the start of the day, there is nothing more important than making sure that you get your family’s body clocks and appetites going with some sun on your breakfast table. With some clever design and planning, invite that morning to breakfast!

The best of the best paper light fixtures

By Krissy Bradfield

I love paper – it has so many uses. Books are made from paper, as are magazines and junk mail. We are surrounded by paper used in all sorts of ways – except most of those are kind of uninspiring. But there are people out there – artists — who look at a ream of paper and think ‘I’m going to turn that into a paper chandelier.’ And they do. They release their creations out into the world where people like me gawk at them for hours, wondering however did they do that? And what magic protects it from catching on fire?

Thank goodness there are innovative thinkers out there who aren’t stymied by such questions. They just get out there and give the humble piece of paper a new lease on life.

Here are 10 of the most beautiful examples of paper light fixtures that I’ve seen. They are complex, intricate and the culmination of hundreds of hours of work.
