The statement lamp: Why invest & our top five picks!

While we love a bargain, we’re also firm believers in splashing out on statement pieces too, should your budget allow. And while it’s not the first item that springs to mind when you think of a hero piece, the statement lamp holds an important place in modern interior design. But when a single lamp can cost up to five figures, is it worth the investment?

Tom Dixon Bell table lamp in copper
Tom Dixon Bell table lamp in copper, $1080

“I believe a statement lamp is definitely worth the investment. It adds extra character to a setting and is another element to assist in carrying through colours and finishes – brass accents for example. A cheap piece will only bring the rest of the setting down instead of adding life to a space,” says Andrew Algar, owner of Contents International Design.

Kelly Wearstler Linden table lamp, $2085

Chosen well (a neutral tone is usually a smart purchase), a good quality high-end lamp will give back many times over the years. “It is also a piece that, if invested in, can be utilised in other rooms down the line if you change your décor or move to a new house,” says Andrew.

Lee Broom clear crystal bulb table lamp
Lee Broom clear crystal bulb table lamp, $585

And while there is amazing variety these days, as with any hero piece, you must make sure it doesn’t compete with the rest of the room. “If you were to keep the sofa, chairs, and table quite simple, a feature lamp will be the standout and lift the entire setting as well as providing much needed mood lighting too,” says Andrew.

Atollo lamp
Designed in 1977, Vico Magistrett’s Atollo lamp is a cult classic. From $1724

Like dark paint colour and bold prints, Andrew encourages you to dive right in when it comes to making the purchase. “Look for elements in a lamp that will accent something already in your room to help it carry through, and don’t be afraid to go over scale. If you’re investing in a feature piece you want it to be noticed!”

Jen’s Lust List: 11.06.17

I love this super affordable set of four succulent drawings I spotted on Instagram. All 4 x A4-size prints for $34.95 from Handmadely. I think they look great grouped together in simple black frames. Affordable art at its best!

I’ve seen these tile-effect vinyl floor mats a few places now and they are really effective. Apparently they were all the rage at Maison & Objet. Designed in Israel by Maya Kounievsky, these ones are based on original tile patterns. Add interest to a hallway, a tiled effect to a bathroom, lounge, kitchen or outdoor terrace. Crafted from durable high quality vinyl, Beija Flor can be used indoors or out. Move them from room to room with ease and simply wipe them clean. Available in three sizes an many colours and styles. From $119 from French Bazaar.

Damian and I are both big fans of the Paul Smith fashion brand, as well as the classic Anglepoise lamp (two British icons!), so no surprises we are LOVING the latest collab between the two, which sees mini and giant versions added. Available in Australia through Cult, the mini is a very reasonable (in my opinion) $301, the standard is $370 ad the giant is one to save up for at $6,993.

I’ll be back with more finds next Tuesday!

Trending: 10 hot picks from the 2017 Stockholm Furniture Fair

Scandi-design lovers will delight in some of the latest furniture pieces to come out of the recent 2017 Stockholm Furniture Fair. Considered the place to discover the latest in Scandinavian design, our friends at Fred International have compiled their round-up of the hottest pieces from this year’s celebration.

The Jord sofa

The Jord sofa, designed by Luca Nichetto for Fogia, is a next-level modular system with built-in table too. Offering endless seating configurations, we love this piece!

The Sturdy stool

Designed by Studioilse for Made by Hand, the Sturdy stool pays homage to traditional Danish design details – the splayed legs for one. It’s a lovely, timeless design.

La Pipe lounge

The La Pipe lounge chair, designed by Ida Linea Hildebrand from Friends & Founders has a stunning silhouette. Elegant from all angles, the chair has a beautiful rounded shape, gorgeous detailing and is comfortable to boot. This is our favourite pick.

Big Sur table

Made from glass sheets and timber, the Big Sur table, designed by Simon Klenell and Kristoffer Sundin for Fogia, has mix and match glass layers for an unexpected twist.

Vouge floor lamp

Designed by Niclas Hoflin for Rubn Lighting, the Vouge floor lamp boasts an industrial-style perforated steel cylinder design that casts lovely, even light across the room. While we’ve seen perforated steel table lamps, this is the first floor one and it’s certainly a statement piece.

Guest chair

Perhaps the most retro of our picks, the Guest chair by Mönica Forster for Swedese uses elegant blonde bentwood combined with super soft leather to great effect.

Conekt table

Minimal and clean, the Conekt table by Mogen Lassen from by Lassen, features custom-made, visible L-shaped brackets that add an industrial edge to this solid design.

Teelo 8020 table lamp

An unusual design, the Teelo 8020 table lamp by Secto Design is a sculptural piece that combines beautiful clean lines with blonde wood. The design means you won’t be blinded by a bare light bulb either.

Dini sofa

Designed by Andreas Engesvik for Fogia, the elegant and timeless Dini sofa was inspired by sports cars – its moniker is a tribute to Marcello Gandini, the man behind the iconic Lamborghini Miura.

Pond table

The Pond table, designed by Mönica Forster for Swedese, has a gorgeous organic shaped top that contrasts with its four reedy, straight legs.

Super Amart for cute homewares: who knew?!

Sponsored by Super Amart

OK, who knew about this and has been keeping it from me? Super Amart has some cute and affordable homewares and I recently got to discover them. Armed with $200 to do a little bedroom refresh, I went shopping.

20150817_162530_HDR

I LOVE orchids but I always kill them within two weeks which is an expensive fail. There are some great fauxs out there including this beauty from Super Amart. At $69.95 I thought it was a great buy but please note they are currently on sale for just $39.95!

My favourite purchase however has to be the timber Raintree lamp, which looks a lot more expensive than its $64.95 price tag. This neutral number looks great in any room. I can’t decide whether or not to move mine to the kitchen as it seems to suit there really well too!

20150819_114042_HDR

One of my top tips for buying bargain homewares that look expensive is to choose simple shapes and lines, neutral colours and matt textures, like this linen-look lampshade. Avoid the shiny at all costs, my friends!

Likewise, you can’t go wrong with classic colours like those in the two cushions I picked for my bed, which were 24.95 and $29.95. I do love a bargain!

Some of the many cushions available at Super Amart

Also, note you can’t get homewares items delivered but you can buy them online and pick them up at your nearest store for free.

Disclosure: As well as paying for this post, Super Amart gave me $200 to shop with them and write about my experience. All views are my own.

IKEA’s science fiction inspired pendant wins a Red Dot Award

Having always been a huge fan of science fiction movies and video games, designer David Wahl was inspired to create the IKEA PS Pendant Lamp. And looking at it, it’s not hard to see its resemblance to a spaceship or an intelligent space weapon!

With a simple to use mechanism, all you need to do is pull the strings and the shape of the lamp shade as well as the intensity of the light changes. When closed, only a small amount of light finds its way out, while when fully opened, more light spreads out, creating interesting light effects on the wall.

ikea light

Unique and affordable (just $69), the IKEA PS Pendant Lamp has now been awarded a Red Dot Award, one of the best-respected design awards in the world. Receiving ‘An Honourable Mention’ for its well-executed design work, thought-out design solution and mechanically simple but effective dimmer function; it was assessed by a 38 member jury among 4,928 other designs, representing 56 countries.

Little Bishop: the simple and easy new way to hang lights

The problem: Nothing but brass hooks to position and suspend cable hung pendant lights.

The solution: A hand crafted, hand cast, truly minimal form, designed for the job!

06-LittleBishop

For years, Melbourne interior designer Dominique Hunter was frustrated with the makeshift method in which cable hung pendant lights were positioned and secured. The common solution at the time – a brass hook – was not appropriate for many of the great lights she used in her interiors.

So she enlisted the help of her partner Antony Richards to create an elegant and natural way to hang pendant lights in her projects. While managing their business Hunter & Richards, Antony used his spare time and background in jewellery design to carefully hand craft a hook that could position and suspend cable hung ceiling lights with no knot, clamp, bolt, screw or clip.

02-LittleBishop

“We wanted a solution that would not stand out as a feature, one that would let the cable hang naturally” says Dominique. A decision made early in the project was to have the cable lock itself down. This lead to a form that was beautiful in itself, but when wrapped with the electrical cable it took a step back and let the design of the light fitting do its job, letting (pardon the pun) the light shine!

01-LittleBishop

“There are so many cool light fittings around, and just because you’re not spending a lot on one doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the minor details of an interior project by using a cheap hook from the hardware store. We wanted something that was designed for this purpose alone, and be a solution that would suit any pendant no matter the budget or style of interior,” Dominique adds.

After some workshop experimentation, a prototype was born. A small run of cast reproductions allowed Antony and Dominique to test the design on one of their interior projects. They were very happy with the result, and decided to develop the product further.

05-LittleBishop

Antony turned to the internet to raise funds and gauge people’s interest. The popularity of crowd funding made Kickstarter an obvious choice, with its ability to spread the word quickly and keep people updated on the status of the project proving to be a powerful tool in the birth of a new product.

Antony said: “The Kickstarter campaign was a great way to get people in on our story and to have them join our journey as a small, independent design practice doing good design work and getting their first product out to market. It’s also a great way for people to be first with a new product or to grab a bargain, as the ideas featured are usually priced a lot lower than existing products and established brands.”

The campaign was successful, raising $15,467 or 309% of the funding goal. This allowed the pair to complete the development of the Little Bishop and then move ahead with production. Next month will see the first batch of Little Bishop Pendant Light Hooks delivered to expectant Kickstarter backers, as well as buyers who’ve purchased from the online store.

My winter warmer picks for The Home and a stunning country photoshoot

I was delighted when The Home asked me to pick some of my favourite products for a special winter warmer sale (starting today) and to join them on a photoshoot on location to bring them to life. Isn’t the end result stunning? I’m so in love with this clever photo!

the home winter warmer interiors addict 1

I headed straight to some of my favourite places, like Cadrys rugs and Have You Met Miss Jones to pick some cosy and colourful items. I’ve always loved the look of layered rugs but never tried this in my own home so it was fun to pick several to work together. I think this shoot goes to show that mix and match can totally work, and it’s all about contrast and texture. And how about that lamp? I’m buying one of those babies for myself!

the home winter warmer interiors addict

As for these beautiful images, a LOT of hard work and talent went into them behind the scenes, which I got to watch, but cannot take any credit for (apart from putting the flowers in the vase and making the tea for the cup on the tray…)! Joining me at the gorgeous property in the Hunter Valley were The Home’s stylist Marj Silva, photographer Lisa Zhou and buyer Emma Blomfield (also stylist at Nest Designs). They made that picture happen, and no, it really isn’t glamorous! Unless of course you count climbing on scaffolding and holding boards up on the other side of windows to stop pesky sun rays coming through and spoiling the shot glamorous!
