Online shopping fix: Crate & Co.

Stocking some of my all-time favourites like Blacklist, Aura, Pony Rider and Kate & Kate, online boutique Crate & Co. offer a collection of beautiful and carefully curated gifts and homewares.

Sourcing locally designed products, founder Ania Cheetham wanted to create a convenient online shopping destination that provided goodies that were unique, high-quality, affordable and supported Australian businesses.

“I believe that your home should tell your story and I created Crate & Co. to help you make it a stylish one,” explains Ania. “I enjoy sourcing locally and discovering new talent and bringing that all together to provide products that stand out from the crowd.”

Originally working in real estate, Ania fell in love with homewares after working with a number of home stagers and property stylists, and since then… she’s never looked back!

Online shopping fix: Neutral Instinct

Inspired by the Leonardo Da Vinci quote: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” Amanda Tiernan left her job as a school teacher to open online boutique, Neutral Instinct.

Believing less is more, Amanda’s homewares have a distinct Scandinavian design edge. “Many of the products stocked by Neutral Instinct have a Scandi influence, which epitomises simplicity, minimalism and functionality,” explains Amanda. “I believe simple pieces can have a maximum effect when styled in the correct way.”

Sourcing her homewares from trade fairs and social media, Amanda wanted to create a store that not only stocked gorgeous products, but also gave customers inspiration on how to style them through beautiful images. “We recently completed our first photo shoot with the intention of creating a strong and unique visual for our brand,” says Amanda. “I wanted to stay true to our minimalist, Scandinavian inspired look so that customers who shared our love of this style could confidently log on to our website and find products on each page that they would want in their homes.”

Stocking brands such as By Lassen, Menu, Design House Stockholm, Karlsson, Mud Australia and Pony Rider, Amanda hopes to expand Neutral Instinct to include more designers and one day, even a bricks and mortar store. “Some of my short-term goals include adding a children’s category to the store and adding a few new designers to the range that I have long wished for. My long-term plans include opening a bricks and mortar store and offering a design service as well as a retail service. Lots to dream about!”

The Rug Collection collaborates with Pony Rider & Rebecca Judd

Collaborating with street artist Bradley Eastman (Beastman), lifestyle blogger Rebecca Judd, artist Katie McKinnon, homewares brand Pony Rider and textile studio Home-Work, The Rug Collection have created a limited edition collection, entitled Art Series.

Katie McKinnon - Moonlighter & Coral (insitu) 03

The 10-piece range features two rugs by each designer, reflecting their individual style and creative vision. And with only 50 rugs per design (each will be marked 1/50 much like artworks), they are sure to become coveted collector’s items.

Pony Rider - Mexican Traveller (insitu) 03

A standout in the collection is Pony Rider’s circular Mexican Traveller rug, which derived from their Summer season, is inspired by the colours and simple graphics found on a truck in a village in Mexico.

Home Work - Dynasty (insitu) 05

Also worthy of note is Katie McKinnon’s vibrant Moonlighter and Coral rug, which takes inspiration from the shy and retiring Moonlighter, a fish that lives under shallow coastal reef ledges. And Home-Work’s Dynasty rug, which was inspired by their bedding print of the same name.

Rebecca Judd's Gelato

Rebecca Judd’s Gelato is a pretty, textural, pastel creation.

Real Living, April 2013

As they say on The Block: “Wow, wow, wow!” Real Living’s front cover for April certainly packs a punch – the genius colour and print combination is so crazy it works. I’m not brave enough to wear prints, but I’m now reconsidering the option of working prints into my wardrobe, and my home!

Highlights

The highlight for me this issue was the ‘Find your own Colour Palette’ feature by designer Jacinta Preston. It gives some great advice and made me feel more confident when it comes to choosing colour. I loved one of Jacinta’s examples: “Gloss matt is very different to matt black: gloss accentuates and intensifies the colour, matt helps colour to recede and look more subtle.”
