Target collaborates with local designer on Australian themed homewares

Melbourne based surface pattern designer Mable Tan has teamed up with Target Australia to create a lovely Australian themed homewares range titled ‘Glorious Summer’ which takes inspiration our bountiful native flora and fauna. Inspired by one of Mable’s Victorian staycations, the pastel collections features cockatoos, lorikeets, golden wattle, eucalyptus flowers and protea all rendered in the designer’s whimsical, vintage inspired style.

“I’m so excited to have worked with Target Australia on this range. I’m passionate about creating designs that add happiness to everyday life and to me, nature clears my mind and helps me to feel more grounded and peaceful. This collaboration with Target gives me the chance to share that feeling with all Australians and that’s something I’m really proud of,” says Mable, who has perviously licensed her designs to iconic international brands such as Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom and Target USA.

Target Australia step up their homewares offering. Big time!

Wrongly or rightly, I’d always seen Target Australia as a brand that ticked the box for affordability, but wasn’t exactly ahead in the style stakes. Yet after checking out their Autumn Winter 2015 range yesterday, I can confidently say my mind’s been changed.

What came as absolute news to me, was this time last year there was no Target Home design team, meaning everything you saw in store was designed by suppliers. However, jump to today and Target Home now have six designers, creating all their products in-house from scratch.

“Home had been neglected for a long time,” says Target Home design manager Bruce Summers. “But now, with our own design team, we have really been able to focus on our products and designing them to be much better. We’ve also streamlined our range. At one time in bed linen we had 140 quilt covers on the floor, now we’ve gone down to 40!”

As well as more than halving their range, they’ve also divided their products into three themes: colour, monochromatic and casual living. “We chose those themes based off different people’s homes and the way they like to shop,” explains Bruce. “Our last colour theme was Retro Modern and now that’s evolved into our current theme, Soft Pop. They have a similar palette and common elements, which means everything sits together well and it makes it easier to shop season after season as you can mix and match. Before, we had pretty much every colour and it looked really fragmented.”

Alongside Soft Pop, which is inspired by 60s minimalism, there’s the monochromatic Global Luxe, which features metallics, tribal iconography and luxurious textures and the casual living Lodge, which is all about whites, natural timber, knits and warm neutrals.

With many of the products having hit stores in recent weeks, the remainder of the season will drop end of March. For more information.

Curtis Stone launches cookware for Target Australia

I must admit I’m a bit of sucker for any of Target’s celebrity or designer collaborations, so I was very excited to hear that celebrity chef Curtis Stone has released a new, affordable kitchen range exclusively for Target Australia.

Available both in store and online, the new 80-piece range of cookware and tableware was created specifically for home cooks. What’s even better is the prices won’t break the budget, ranging from $4 for food preparation bowls to $100 for a premium cutting work bench, and $7 for side plates to $60 for an oil pourer.

With so much on offer it’s hard to pick a favourite, but Curtis’ must-have pieces are the Magnetic Attraction Stand (below), which frees up drawer space and keeps utensils in an easy to reach spot while cooking, the Pick-Up Scoop, which acts as an extra pair of hands in the kitchen, scooping up finely diced ingredients, and the Chop Chop food chopper, which saves you time.
