Luxury fashion retailer Matches launches into homewares

London-based luxury fashion portal Matches (if you’re unfamiliar, it’s akin to Net-a-Porter) has branched into the homewares space with the launch of a homewares studio that features a tight edit of creations from fashion luminaries such as Gucci, Peter Pilotto, Preen and Missoni. While certainly not cheap, the line-up of cushions, throws, candles and tabletop items make for great statement pieces.

Peter Pilotto painted ceramic plate: The fashion designer’s foray into homewares has been much anticipated and this painted ceramic plate is made in the UK and recalls the colourful designs that made him famous. $146.

Missoni Home Togo cotton and linen-blend cushion: The Italian fashion house has been decorating interiors since 1983 and its iconic zig zag stripe is an enduring style. $418.

La DoubleJ Editions Geometric-print linen napkin set: Made in Italy with an archive-sourced print, these bold napkins would look fabulous against all white. $160 (set of six).

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi floral-print silk-satin cushion: Much like the label’s fashion creations, this cushion unites two contrasting floral prints to dramatic effect. The ruffle border trim is a lovely, feminine touch. $312.

Raawii Strom ceramic jug: For Scandi lovers, this gorgeous jug boasts a bold geometric shape, gorgeous colour and is the work of Copenhagen-based brand Raawii. There’s a bowl and vase in the range too. $100.

Gucci hand-embroidered velvet cushion: The eye-watering price aside, this cushion is one of the key items from Gucci Décor’s debut collection and combines a hand-embroidered cat motif surrounded by yellow flowers on pink velvet with a braided trim and tassels. The back features a contrasting floral jacquard. $1560.

La DoubleJ Editions mosaic-print porcelain plates: These dessert plates are decorated with a 1920s flooring mosaic print found in the archives of Italian silk manufacturer Mantero. Made in Italy, the gold trim really sets off the design. $142 (set of two).

We interview Margherita Missoni on her Pottery Barn Kids range

Given her grandparents founded the iconic Italian fashion house Missoni, it’s safe to assume that Margherita Missoni grew up immersed in creativity. A darling of the fashion world, Margherita has not only has spent time as a Missoni brand ambassador and designer, but she’s also launched a successful children’s line (Margherita Kids) and now, a rather covetable children’s homeware line available in Australia through Pottery Barn Kids.

We’re loving the daisy mirror, side table, daisy pom pom quilt and accessories!

Whimsical and colourful yet sophisticated (a tough balance to strike), the range includes home décor for the nursery, bedroom, and playroom with the daisy a recurring motif. It’s rather fitting really given Margherita’s name means ‘daisy’ in Italian and her personal aesthetic has always had something of the flowerchild about it.

Change table

“Collaborating with Pottery Barn Kids was such a joy and a natural fit for me, as it brought together playful design and quality craftsmanship to create a beautiful collection for kids and baby. The collection is comfortable, colourful, and it evokes the same sense of freedom I feel when dressing myself and my children – mixing, matching and creating something that is unique to your own sense of style. I wanted to create a line of homewares that would inspire and empower kids to be imaginative and inventive,” says Margherita.

“Margherita means daisy in Italian, so it’s really my namesake flower. It’s also such a cheerful motif,” says Margherita. Pictured is the daisy pouf.

Becoming a mother in 2013 (she has two young sons, Otto and Augusto) has informed the collection too, meaning it’s both beautiful and practical. “As a mother, I’m always thinking about the needs of my children first and foremost. For the collaboration with Pottery Barn Kids, I thought about the needs children and parents have when it comes to home furnishings. There’s lots of child-sized furniture, as I strongly believe that it’s important for children to be surrounded by furniture that’s both approachable and size-appropriate.”  She is a big fan of the storage pieces in the collection – for both children and adults alike. “They’re perfect for stowing away your kids’ toys and for staying organised, which is essential when you’re a busy parent,” says Margherita.

Gorgeous woven storage

And with the success of her childrenswear line Margherita Kids, the collaboration seems like a natural progression. “When Margherita launched in 2015, I already had a whole world for children in mind – not just clothing, but lifestyle products, too. I knew I would eventually want to create everything from accessories to bedding to furniture, but, of course, it takes time to expand into new categories. When Pottery Barn Kids approached me to create this collection, I was so excited. I want this collection, like the Margherita clothing line, to inspire kids to imagine, create and play.”

As for her favourite pieces from the range, the designer has quite a few. “The colour blocked rugs, the whimsical daisy chair and the lullaby embroidered linens are my favourite pieces for sure. I can’t wait to incorporate them into my boys’ nurseries.” And with prices ranging from $29 to $299, the range is sure to fly off shelves.

The collection is available in store and online from today (Friday).

Top 5 picks for the perfect tea party for one

With Sydney’s current weather closer resembling rainy London than sunny down under, there’s no better time to curl up inside with a good book and – my personal favourite – a great cup of tea. Below are my top picks for enjoying tea time.

Fullscreen-capture-11252014-15654-AM_bmp

Bodum’s Pavina glasses ($29.95 for 350ml set of 2) are my absolute favourite cups ever! The mouth-blown double wall design is genius – perfect for hot and iced tea alike, the heat resistant glass both insulates and prevents condensation. Plus they look seriously cool – or hot, whichever you prefer.

Missoni-Home-Zig-Zag

If you’ve read my towel piece, you may have noticed a colourful pattern (pun intended). What better way to pair a clean set of tea glasses than with the Missoni Home Zig Zag teapot ($395)? Luxurious yet contemporary, the Italian made porcelain pot is the ideal companion for both the classy high tea party, and the casual night in.

tea-header

To utilise this classy teapot you need… tea, of course! T2 tea (from $14 for 100g) is my ultimate go to – the selection is jaw dropping, the packaging is super cute, and the tea itself never disappoints. I will drink anything from black to oolong to a fruit tisane, so it would be impossible to choose just one. Melbourne Breakfast, Madagascan Vanilla, Apple Crumble and Tummy Tea are some that spring to mind, but their range is ever growing, and there are plenty I (and you!) have yet to try.

Kaikado_1_grande

To stop tea from losing its magic, I store mine in an air tight canister. If you can get your hands on the Kaikado Tea Caddy, you won’t be disappointed. Simple yet timeless, the 400g canister is handmade in Japan, comes in brass, tin and copper, and will match everything in your kitchen.

No tea session is complete without chocolate. Bahen & Co chocolate blocks are one of a kind. Produced ethically in Margaret River (Western Australia) using vintage chocolate making equipment and only two ingredients (cacao and cane sugar), they feature antique botanical printed packaging, and a range of flavours including Almond & Sea Salt, Chilli, and Cracked Coffee. These babies look almost too good to eat. Almost.

5 of the best towels for your bathroom

The cicadas are buzzing, the waves are rolling, the sunscreen is flowing… With summer in full swing, it’s time to switch out the dingy towels and refresh ye olde bathroom with some stunning towels that scream summer!

Add a splash of colour with the Melbourne-designed Peacock bath towel from Ninnho ($79). The teal and cobalt against shimmering gold is a perfect reflection of the summer sun glittering against the ocean.

NINNHO_9638_grandeLoom’s Morocco Spot bath towels ($189) are a cheery, colourful blend of soft organic cotton finished with a hand-tied fringe. Albeit on the pricier side, these are handmade in Turkey and dyed using only using botanicals and vegetables.

1Y9A7064Ah Missoni – where do I begin? The Home range ($202) features a subtle zigzag pattern and caters to all tastebuds, from the colour-crazy to those who prefer neutral classics. My personal favourites are the Giacomo and Paul designs.

missoni3As much as I love bright, eye-popping towels, a luxuriously soft towel in a subtle shade of flint grey is equally appealing. The Royal Turkish bath towels from Christy ($68) are inspired by the vintage elegance of the brand’s first towels (made in 1850!) and feature a traditional embroidered logo and curved edging.

For those who prefer the finer things in life, the Alexander cotton jacquard bath towels by Alex Perry ($44.95) provide a regal Versace-effect in the bathroom.

Ziporah towels: art for your bathroom

For a very long time there’s only been one clear choice for colourful and patterned bathroom towels and that’s Missoni! Now the 3 girls behind Ziporah are trying to change all that with a new Aussie brand.

Ziporah12-757x1024

We decided we would create towels together after recognising a gap in the market for colour, luxury and affordability. After frustrating shopping trips, visits to a trade fair here and there, industry research and loads of questions, things just naturally brought us together,” said their designer, Antoinette Murray.

ZiporahCollection

We decided Ziporah would create unique, artisan designed towels to “make over” a bathroom space, like a beautiful rug can do for a living room or cushions can do for a neutral sofa. We also agreed we would not compromise on quality.”
