Urban Road’s new collection an homage to the Australian summer

As I write this it’s pouring, my feet are hovering dangerously close to the fire and I am debating whether I should ever brace the outdoors again. So while those sweet, sun-kissed days are out of reach, I’m going to live vicariously through Urban Road’s latest collection Rhapsody, an homage to the Australian summer.

Drawing inspiration from brightly coloured beach umbrellas, toes dipped in cool blue water and moments spent watching sunsets with a cocktail (or two), the collection is a harmony of textured abstracts, intricately illustrated watercolours and photographic montages of the ocean’s dynamic ebbs and flows.

This collection also sees the release of Urban Road’s first ever wallpaper collection. Staying true to the brand’s iconic style, the range carries the motifs, shapes and moods that have popularised their collections to date.

The brainchild of self-taught artist and illustrator Suzie Atkin, Urban Road has been sprucing up the walls of homes since 2010. Affordable and high-quality, the artworks are easy-to-match with both contemporary and traditional settings.

From humble beginnings Urban Road now boasts over 1000 products – from its signature premium artworks, to cushions, rugs, acrylic art pieces and poster prints.

The Rhapsody collection will be available for purchase from 24 July.

Urban Road will be at Decor + Design in Melbourne this week, stand D26.

Homedrawn: the girl illustrating the homewares she covets!

With expensive taste (but maybe not the budget to match!), Christina Banos began drawing all the beautiful decorating pieces and furniture she envisioned for her home.

As a graphic designer for Real Living, there was far from a lack of stimulus, and she began using all her spare time to bring everything from textiles to appliances, to life. “I find pieces online as well as in my favourite interior stores. I also like to flick through magazines for latest trends, inspiration and products. These items then translate onto paper, which I sketch. Some proving more intricate than others.”

Compiling her illustrations on her increasingly popular instagram, @homedrawn, it is the culmination of many years of interiors obsessing! “From a young age, I was always filling my sketch pad with drawings and doodles of my dream space. I would dream up floorplans, house designs, objects and constantly change my ideas, it was what I enjoyed doing, and still do!” Sounds like a proper interiors addict to us!

While she studied design, most of her illustration skills are self-taught, which led to a lot of experimentation when beginning Homedrawn. “My practice has changed over time. I started off with Artline pens and then began to add watercolours to my drawings. Now, my main preference is watercolour, however every now and again I do like a traditional pencil sketch!”

Striking sofas in Arthur G’s latest range

We have our eyes on a few of the new lounges in Arthur G’s latest range. The Boss (below), in particular, is our favourite, with its Cloth Fabric indigo, painterly fabulousness! Divine! We love their Australian designed and made creations.

Much as I subscribe to the idea that large pieces like sofas should be purchased in neutrals, there are always exceptions to the rule, right?! The Colette (below) in duck egg, has a very ladylike, classic look and I love the contrast of its timber and brass feet.

And last but not least, the Manhattan four-seater is making me reassess black leather as a sofa choice.

Nice work, Arthur G!

New wallpaper by Real Living’s Sarah Ellison

Sarah Ellison sure knows what looks good and she’s partial to a bit (okay, a lot) of pattern, so you really have to wonder why she didn’t do her own wallpaper range before now?!

wallpaper-039-2

I chatted to the talented Real Living style editor about Light of Art, her debut collection of six wallpaper designs she describes as “the romance of the beach with the energy of the city all rolled into one, with a nod to my love of fashion.” They’re called Zigzag, Cheetah, Geometric, Splatter, Leopard and Triangles.

First look: New canvas designs from Urban Road

I’m a big fan of Urban Road. I have a couple of their canvases in my home and they always get comments. They’re releasing a new collection tomorrow but I have a first look at the designs for you. These lovely smudgy ikats, called Sienna and Spectrum, are my favourites.
