Target homewares: Raw, natural beauty for spring!

With natural fibres currently trending, Target’s spring homewares offering features an on-point assortment of textures including jute, rattan and bamboo alongside tassels, tufting and textured ceramics. And with prices starting from just $4 we’ve scoured the range to bring your our top eight picks.

‘Matilda’ & ‘Rattan’ print cushions: As the name suggests, the ‘Rattan’ cushion is emblazoned with an oversized rattan print that is neutral enough to complement almost any lounge room. By contrast, the ‘Matilda’ cushion is covered in a vintage-washed protea print. $16 each.

Foodie Friday: Fluffy miso caramel dumplings & icecream

Foodie Friday

Maxwell & Williams partnered with celebrity chef Sara Oteri on this recipe, served on their White Basics collection.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Dumplings
30g butter
1 cup self-raising flour
1/3 cup milk

Caramel sauce
2 cups hot water
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp honey
1 tsp yellow miso
45g butter

Method

Combine all the sauce ingredients into a medium sized saucepan and simmer on a low heat until caramel slightly deepens in colour.

Rub butter into the flour until it resembles the texture of fine breadcrumbs. Slowly incorporate the milk until a dough forms. Alternatively, you can do this all in a food processor.

Roll the dough into walnut-to-golfball sized balls and place a few at a time into the simmering sauce.
Cook for 10-to-15 minutes before scooping each out, gently.

For a thicker sauce, keep on the heat a little longer before straining through a fine sieve and pouring over the dumplings.

Serve with vanilla bean ice-cream.

Earthy ceramics dominate Salt&Pepper’s 2018 collection

With searches for ‘ceramic dinnerware’ up 185 per cent on Pinterest, it seems that earthenware, porcelain and stoneware are dominating the table top this autumn and winter and it’s a trend that is reflected in the new Salt&Pepper range.

As with every Salt&Pepper collection, the autumn/winter offering is large but it’s the earthy vibe that stands out the most for me. From shibori inspired pattern to 1970’s look earthenware, these are our top picks.

Nomad range
Nomad

Nomad
Perfect for those that covet a world-traveller vibe, the appropriately titled Nomad collection has been a perennial favourite for the brand and this season sees two new colour ways added into the mix – natural and rust. Featuring organic shapes and a handmade feel, this range is perfect for mixing and matching. The collection also features plenty of new designs too including a tablet holder, spoon rest, jug, garlic keeper and mixing bowls.

Form
Unglazed and raw in texture, the Form dinnerware collection is inspired by the colours of native Australia. The range is available in bisque, clay and black and as individual pieces or as a 16-piece dinner set. I have my eye on that pink!

Akari
Inspired by Japanese shibori dying techniques, the Akari dinnerware range brings fabulous texture to the tabletop. A beautiful indigo colour, you could layer in a couple of pieces with your existing whites for a seasonal change and this range is available as a 12-piece dinner set or as loose pieces too.

Sachi
Lovers of 1970’s earthenware will love the Sachi collection. Designed with a natural, raw stoneware base and embellished with a coloured, drip glaze feature around the rim, this range is the perfect complement to the earthy interiors trend.

Eden
Made from terracotta, the Eden range includes table top and floor planters for both inside and out. I love the gorgeous gold accents.

Bond
Not exactly earthenware but I love the old-world glamour of the Bond collection and thought you would too – I just had to include it! The decanter and matching glassware are made from pressed crystalline glass.

What I’m coveting from Target’s luxe look February homewares

Last week I attended the launch of Target’s new Touch of Luxe homewares collection and it was really great to get a chance to speak to the people behind the product, learn more about their in-house design team and understand just how much thought goes into offering the latest trends to their customer. Let’s just say there’s a lot more to it than you or I would ever think!

With a palette of rich colours and soft textures, without the premium price tag, everyone can indulge in a little luxury. Some of the new pieces are so amazing for the money, I wanted to take you through my favourites.

If you buy one thing from this new touch of luxe collection, make it the reactive glaze dinnerware. It’s absolutely gorgeous; the handcrafted look yet dishwasher and microwave safe. And at $4 per piece (dinner plates, side plates, bowls and mugs) it is amazing value and your guests will surely think it cost so much more. Stunning! I love that you buy it as separates so you can get exactly the pieces that work for your family. This is sure to sell out fast, so do not hang around! You could mix and match it with the new matte stoneware dinner sets (12 pieces for $29 and matching mugs for $2 each) which come in pink and grey.

I love a big mug and these are just perfect. Also coming in pink, they’re just $4 too.

Next up, I’m coveting the pink cut glass accessories to add a feminine touch to your bathroom. Let’s forget for now that my own bathroom is a dated and unrenovated beige number with a turquoise bath! From $5.

There’s loads of new bedding, from dark florals to crushed velvet and this Topaz quilt cover set (from $29) with a matching framed print and cushion available if matchy-matchy is your thing! I think these would be great in a little girl’s room.

There are more plain options too, perfect for layering as the weather gets colder, and adding some cushions from their new range.

The design team have put a lot of work into adding luxury trims and details, quality fabrics and a generous 45cm size, so they offer great value for money. From $15 to $20. The roundie with the pleated edges and the quilted velvet ones are my faves. Did I mention I still love velvet?

Then there’s this $29 teal velvet ottoman, handy as a foot stool, extra seat or even bedside.

Target’s Head of Hardgoods Design, Emma Duxbury-Thompson says: “This collection is a celebration of luxury, colour and texture, and these elements resonate throughout the entire range of products creating a beautiful handwriting across homewares. I’m proud to say that this collection will stand up against the best of the best – but most importantly without the luxury price tag.”

The new February homewares collection is in stores nationally and online now.

Spring/Summer 2015 collection offers more than Salt&Pepper

Where to begin? Salt&Pepper has once again produced a vast and varying collection – from watercolour to pastel, marble to metallic, Scandi to sophisticated, all tastebuds will be satisfied.

Cumulus_0257

One of my personal favourites is the indigo and pale blue of the Cumulus collection. Paired with some rose gold cutlery from the Host range and you have some majestic, yet effortlessly summery dinnerware.

blue and rose gold group shot

If you want to extend the gold theme outside the food scene, giant alarm clocks and metal-framed lamps are the way to go. They even have scented candles in rose gold containers!

Marble_0233

The Marble range also deserves a noteworthy mention, because who doesn’t love marble (although it isn’t real marble!)? Plus it will team perfectly with all that gold decor and cutlery.

Eclectic_0236

Other ranges include the Metro, which brings minimalist measuring spoons, mixing bowls and spice racks into the kitchen, and Loft, a mix of wood and bold graphics. There’s also Café, an understated way to enjoy your tea or coffee at home with matching block colour cups and jugs, and Pastel, which has a more high-tea-in-an-English-manor-feel to it.

Copper&Co’s bright and beautiful timber homewares

Working as a makeup artist by day and a homewares designer by night, Ashlea Cooney often jokes about how different her two gigs are. “One moment my canvas is a beautiful face and it’s all very glamorous and the next, I’m covered in sawdust and paint!” But that said, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

d744f7f733740fc7b45a9ab160e9290c_large_large

With her own homewares brand, Copper&Co, Ashlea creates timber coasters, placemats, serving planks and wall art; an idea she arrived at after brainstorming ideas on what had never been done before. “When I started Copper&Co, painted pots were all the rage and I thought, I want to do that! I wanted to recreate something that most people had in their homes but weren’t that excited by. I knew I wanted to work with wood and the first pieces I made were the coasters. I hadn’t seen anything like them out there and there’s nothing like that feeling of creating something original and unique. Such a buzz!”

IMG_1221_large

Loving timber for the fact, “you never know what you might get,” Ashlea uses all types, depending on what’s on hand at the time. “It’s lovely working with such a beautiful and natural product. I use many different types of wood, but I must say I do love pine for its light colour, which helps the colours of the paint pop!”

image4

Having always enjoyed painting, Ashlea uses bright colours and graphic designs to transform bare timber into original pieces of art that you can put to good use. All handmade, the design process may seem simple, but a lot of time and effort goes into each ware. “Once the wood is picked out, it’s then cut into the different sizes depending on the product. After that, each piece gets sanded by hand and sealed. I then come up with my designs and paint them by hand. Once that’s complete, each piece is signed and sealed for the final time and ready for sale. I take a lot of pride in creating quality items!”

Meet the designers behind Royal Doulton’s 200 Years Collection

To mark their 200th anniversary, iconic British brand Royal Doulton, have launched six new collections that bring together influences from urban street art to historical British events. We took a sneak peek at each collection and chatted to the designers about their inspiration, their design process and why they’re just a little excited about being part of the Royal Doulton 200 Years Collection!

Royal Doulton 1815

RD_200_1815_LS_1 copy

As one of the most successful and recognisable collections in the Royal Doulton portfolio, the aptly named 1815 proudly marks 200 years of ceramic tableware and interior pieces. “The story of 1815 is a great one as many of the aesthetics were developed after researching past techniques from Royal Doulton,” explains Royal Doulton designer Dik Delaney. “Key characteristics such as the dipped glazes give each piece a slightly different finish.”

Pure Evil

RD_200_Pure_Evil_lr

Internationally renowned street artist Pure Evil (Charles Uzzell-Edwards) has built his global fan base by creating masterpieces for the public to enjoy. Pure Evil’s sinister, yet oddly cute, three-legged bunnies come to life as 3D figurines, all finished in a distinctive pattern, including blue spots, gold or black and blue camo print. “I like how Royal Doulton have embraced street art culture,” says Pure Evil. “I think they get it and realise what a significant art movement it is. They’re not just jumping on a short-lived trend, I think it comes from a real love and appreciation of the art movement that Nick Walker and I are privileged to be standard bearers for.”

Nick Walker

RD_200_Nick_Walker_lr

Street artist Nick Walker gained recognition for introducing stencilled street art to Bristol in the early 1980s. Now, through state of the art 3D scanning and printing technology his signature character, the bowler-hatted vandal, has been brought to life in ceramic form. “We did the scanning with me holding the tin of paint dressed as the vandal,” says Nick. “It was an interesting process and super quick. I can see why it’s being used by Royal Doulton. With 3D scanning pretty much anything can be realised!”

Charlene Mullen

RD_200_Charlene_Mullen_City_lr

Successful homewares designer Charlene Mullen has worked closely with Royal Doulton for her popular tableware collection, London Calling. For the 200th anniversary, Charlene built on this well-known core collection, creating a centrepiece consisting of storage and serve items in a bold ‘city- scape’, aptly named Little London. “I began working with Royal Doulton in January 2013 and the time has flown by,” explains Charlene. “It is definitely a collaboration as this is my first time working with ceramics. My business is pattern and Royal Doulton’s design team really know how to transfer this onto ceramics.”

Barber & Osgerby

2015_02_11_RDBO_Shot_12_027_HERO_AD.CROP

An exciting new partnership with highly acclaimed designers Barber & Osgerby, the striking debut collection Olio, features tableware, serveware and cutlery. It combines Royal Doulton’s heritage and experience with Barber & Osgerby’s renowned design aesthetic. “Olio is an incredibly ambitious collection of tableware pieces that are designed for everyday use,” says Jay Osgerby (one half of Barber & Osgerby). “The range is built from a combination of materials and surface finishes: ceramics, wood, stainless steel, different clays, glazed and unglazed elements.”

HemingwayDesign

Hemingway_LS_6

Working across all design disciplines from housing and interiors, to graphics and product design, the new HemingwayDesign collection sees the focus fall solely on ceramics. Statement vases make up a large part of the collection, alongside smaller items such as decorative storage jars, tealight holders and mini jugs. “Royal Doulton are open to collaborations which allow for varied collections and different aesthetics,” explains HemingwayDesign co-founder Tilly Hemingway. “They are not stuck in their ways!”
