Win a Bravista Latte+ machine, a step above standard coffee

What do you get when you take one of Italy’s top coffee specialists, Map Coffee, and have them join forces with one of the world’s most trusted and technologically advanced coffee machine manufacturers, Saeco? An amazing coffee machine!

Map Coffee 1

The new Bravista range of coffee capsule machines offers much more than any standard machine on the market. Map Coffee’s Caffitaly capsules deliver a double filtered, punchy eight grams of espresso, in contrast to the 5.5 grams which are the norm elsewhere. It is this unique combination of a barista-sized espresso shot and the sophisticated coffee extraction process that guarantees supreme taste and aroma every time.

Map Coffee 3

Designed in Italy, the range has been crafted to complement the modern kitchen where space is at a premium. Convenience and ease-of-use were top of mind for the designers. You can adjust the height of the tray and spout to fit your favourite cup (or mug), and even save preferences such as coffee/milk length so your coffee is served just the way you like it.

Map Coffee 2

Our favourite machine in the range is the Bravista Latte+ (pictured below) with its integrated 500ml milk carafe to make milk-based coffees with one touch. Retailing for $499, we are offering one lucky reader a Bravista Latte+ machine in white, a heap of coffee pods and a Clean Bean starter pack! What’s Clean Bean you ask? It’s a universal tablet that rids your machine of old coffee residue and cleans the pipes from the capsule right through to the cup. You wouldn’t drink your coffee from a dirty cup, and now you don’t have to drink espresso made from a dirty coffee machine!

How to pick the perfect coffee machine for your home

To combat the rising coffee prices, many Australians are now making their own cafe quality coffee in the comfort of their own home. If you are looking to upgrade your current coffee machine or considering taking the plunge and investing in your first coffee machine, The Good Guys appliance experts have some tips to keep in mind.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 11.23.18 am

Firstly, it is important to consider what will fulfil your needs. You should ask yourself how you will be using the machine, whether you want it to produce a quick espresso shot to kick-start your morning or if you want it to provide the ultimate barista experience.

Consider the size of your kitchen, if you have a small space and intend to only use the machine quickly in the morning before putting it away you should opt for a lighter model for optimum movability, therefore design will not be a top priority. If you plan on keeping the machine out and making it a feature piece of the kitchen, make sure you have enough countertop space for a larger model as you don’t want to sacrifice valuable space in lieu of your unit.

Once you have decided on size and expected usage, you can then choose the specific type of machine that will be best suited to your needs:

  1. For those who want to be hands on and experiment with a wide range of coffee beans, manual machines are perfect as they allow you to become an at-home barista and they require a certain type of artistry to produce the ultimate cup of coffee. Most manual models use a motor driven pump to force the exact amount of water needed through a thermoblock, creating coffee that can be filtered to suit your specific taste. They do require slightly more work than an automated machine, however you have much more control over the final product.
  2. If you are time poor but don’t want to sacrifice on quality you should opt for an automated machine as they generally do all the work for you. Simply add some coffee beans and the machine will grind them and dispense them at the touch of a button. They are the ultimate appliance for people who want quick coffee with little hassle.
  3. Capsule machines are stylish, easy to use and easy to clean. A capsule or pod removes coffee beans from the equation entirely, relying purely on cases of ground coffee wrapped in filter paper. The capsules are extremely fast and easy to use and are perfect for those on the go.
  4. If you are looking for the ultimate at home coffee-making experience, a coffee machine with both a manual and automatic function in the one unit is the perfect option. These coffee machines offer automatic grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing, as well as the manual unit, automating the two most difficult parts of manual espresso.

When buying a coffee machine, particularly a manual machine, easy to use settings and features will be important, some features to consider may include:

  1. Optimal bar pressure, the speed at which the hot water is forced through the coffee, is usually between 15 and 19 bars.
  2. Thermoblock is the heating element that boils the water to the perfect temperature.
  3. Machines with higher wattage boil water faster.

The seriously easy to use Lavazza Fantasia coffee machine

I must admit I’m on a bit of a high at the moment. I just made two coffees. Sure, to many that sounds like no big deal. But ever since my parents installed a state of the art coffee machine into my childhood home some 10 years ago, I had sworn off making coffee and, to be honest, coffee in general. You seriously needed a PhD to operate that machine, and whilst I had had many a tutorial on how to use it, if anyone asked for one, I’d quickly reply it was broken!

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 10.54.26 am

But back to present day, and with my new (gifted) Lavazza machine in tow, making coffee is now achievable, if not easy! The new Fantasia model is all about offering a real Italian cafe experience at home, and can produce a range of made-to-taste coffee beverages including espresso, long black, cappuccino, flat white and hot or cold latte. Catering for all tastes, there are three different settings for frothing milk and two for coffee. Milk can even be cold-frothed for a dense, velvety texture.

Capri_RE231_Latte_Delivery

Other features include a temperature control function that ensures coffee quality is always consistent; an LED on the display, which will light up when the coffee maker needs descaling; and a cup support rack that can be set at three different heights. Cleaning the machine is also easy thanks to removable parts that are dishwasher safe.

The machine also comes with a book of recipes (though I’m not sure if I’m at that level yet!), produced by the Lavazza Training Center, containing a series of espresso-based beverages you can enjoy at home.

Fantasia is compatible with Lavazza’s extensive range of A Modo Mio coffee capsules, is available in three colours and retails for $399. It is available nationally at all leading department stores and electrical retailers, as well as online.

— Disclosure: The Lavazza Fantasia coffee machine was gifted to me, however positive coverage was not guaranteed.

Stylish new Nespresso cups in black porcelain and silicon

I do love a new Nespresso accessory, especially a sexy and stylish one! The coffee brand have teamed up with Berlin based industrial design studio GECKELER MICHELS to bring us the Touch Collection cups.

3_045_Main_1-5_R3

Inspired by the stylish design of the Nespresso machines, the Touch Collection features sleek black lines and a matt and gloss finish. The shape of the cup, with its silicon ring, pays homage to the iconic coffee capsule.

GECKELER MICHELS, known for their contemporary mix of textures and materials, chose sophisticated black pigmented porcelain to guarantee a deep brilliant colour and finish. The soft touch silicon ring with its silky texture was an intuitive solution and inspiration for the name.

Nespresso sensory experts were also involved in the design in order to make sure the cups release the intensity of aromas within Nespresso Grands Crus. Furthermore, the cups’ concave bottom ensures the optimal crema, both in terms of finesse and quantity. Finally, the compact porcelain will keep the coffee at the perfect temperature. There’s a lot to it!

2_028_Main_1-4_R1_RGB

“We tried to integrate the strongest identity element of Nespresso in the cup design, which is the shape of the capsule. This is reflected in the form of the upper part of each cup. The result is a cup shape with a strong silhouette which provides a subconscious hint to the brand’s identity,” explained Geckeler.

The Touch Collection will be available in four sizes: Espresso ($30 for two) Lungo ($35 for two) Cappuccino ($35 for two) and Mug ($35 for two).

Video: Ever wondered where your Nespresso coffee comes from?

Big companies like Nespresso don’t always get the best press for being ethical or sustainable and the waste associated with capsule coffee has been a talking point for some time. In this new video, you can learn more about where your Nespresso comes from. Did you know 68 percent is from AAA Sustainable Quality Program coffee farms?

Watch the video or read their policies on sustainability and recycling and make up your own mind. I always think it’s good to make informed choices. Personally, I love the convenience of Nespresso and I really need to start recycling my pods. Find your nearest recycling point here.

Chocolate, caramel and vanilla become permanent Nespresso flavours

Great news for those who like their coffee a little sweeter! The three most popular limited edition Nespresso Variations – Vanilla, Dark Chocolate and Caramel – are back and now part of the permanent Nespresso Grand Crus range.

Re-introduced as Vanilio, Ciocattino and Caramelito Variations Grand Crus (of course they needed a fancy new Italian name! What would Mr Clooney say?!), they offer a combination of natural aromas with the smoothness of the Livanto, apparently the Grand Cru with the optimum profile for complementing different flavours.

nespresso VANILO

Variations Grand Crus by Nespresso

Vanilio  A balanced harmony between the rich and the velvety aromas of vanilla and the mellow flavour of the Livanto Grand Cru. A blend distinguished by its full flavour, infinitely smooth and silky on the palate.

The capsule machine that makes tea, hot chocolate and cold drinks as well as coffee

Well, this one’s bound to upset the coffee purists and delight the tea and hot chocolate drinkers all at the same time! The Nescafé Dolce Gusto is the first ever machine available in Australia to make 14 different beverages, from hot frothy cappuccinos to chilled peach iced teas. Its multi-beverage capsule system is already hugely popular in more than 50 countries around the world.

DeLongi Dolce Gusto

It’s a partnership between Nestlé and De’Longhi. The sleek and easy-to-use machine (which kind of looks like a cute baby robot?) serves full-bodied coffee as well as iced coffees and teas with the touch of a button. Its 15-bar pressure pump (similar to the pressure used in cafe coffee machines) helps creates that crema layer.

The Nespresso U launch with Darren Palmer

I had so much fun at the Nespresso U launch, hosted by interior designer Darren Palmer in Sydney last night. There were (n)espresso martinis, plenty of glamorous guests and fun to be had by styling your own vignette around one of the latest coffee machines.
