All-whites almost too pretty to eat off

But you really must eat off these Markey & Lockyer creations because it’s totally safe to do so and just look how good they look with cake on them!

Marley and Lockyer 3

You may have noticed a bit of a theme emerging on Interiors Addict recently, of handmade and upcycled products from small, independent businesses. I just love the idea of owning one-offs and things made with love and by hand. I won’t pretend I don’t own my fair share of mass manufactured “stuff” but I also love to pay a little extra for something I know is worth it. And there’s nothing like knowing the story behind something too.

Who wants a hand drawn floorplan of Carrie Bradshaw or Frasier’s apartment?

Well, here’s something I didn’t know I needed (or even existed for that matter) until I came across it: a hand drawn floorplan of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment from Sex and the City! Even better, all manner of other famous TV home floor plans, including Frasier, Friends, Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld and more.

Sarah’s found her happy making sustainable homewares

With sustainable design practices gaining momentum, basket weaver Sarah Powell is bang on trend with her new venture, Find Your Happy. “The majority of my designs start with rescued or found materials,” she says. “I love giving materials a second life. I can often be found scouring op shops, recycled centres and even my husband’s shed for ‘potentials’.”

Find Your Happy Baskets
While many basket makers work with natural materials, Sarah laughs that her preference for manmade materials stems primarily from laziness, as natural materials require preparation to work with, whereas manmade materials such a rope, wire, nylon, and paper are all readily available.

“By working with recycled, manmade materials, it allows me to also address sustainability and the fact that we continue to over produce things. I like to think by rescuing materials for my baskets I’m doing my very small bit in helping reduce landfill.” Having studied textiles design at the University of Wollongong, Sarah was drawn into the world of photography, and initially chose to pursue this medium as a career. She spent most of her twenties travelling the world, documenting what she saw with her camera.

Uplifting typography art from Barcelona

You know me, I love a bit of inspirational, feel good typography art.

Love what you do

This week I came across Barcelona-based graphic artist Coni Della Vedova on Etsy and loved her screenprints. Don’t you love that about Etsy? That you can tap into stuff from all over the world that everyone else doesn’t have already?

40% off Lona de Anna prints: TODAY ONLY

I love Anna White’s prints and I’m not alone as I keep coming across them in my friends’ houses too! Good news: she’s having 40% off all prints in her Etsy store but it’s for today only, so don’t hang around! Here are a couple of my favourites. Very summery, don’t you think? They’re normally $25 but with 40% off they’re just $15 (yes that calculation took a while in my head. I’m a words person, okay?!)

Etsy Tuesday: fun stuff

I’ve spent a lot of time on Etsy this week, getting inspiration for wedding styling, favours, stationery, you name it! Etsy is becoming THE place for wedding stuff. You can even buy FOOD on Etsy. Did you know that? Anyway, today’s Etsy Tuesday isn’t strictly homewares, but it is very cool stuff.

First up, I love these wooden neon salad bowls. Aren’t they gorgeous? US$64 for two.

Then I found some homemade marshmallows (I KNOW!). US$12.

Etsy Tuesdays: Mid Century Child

Now, this furniture-inspired art is definitely unique! Creator Louise Black, says: “The images use iconic mid century furniture design and the whimsy and fun of children to create fresh modern artwork suitable for the nursery or the lounge room.”

She sells the art prints and greetings cards at her Etsy store. What do you think?

10 places to buy affordable art

There’s now an updated 2013 version of this post here.

*I’m going to have to apologise in advance for the typography bias here. I can’t help it! I love words! Words as art are cool!

Blacklist Studio Prints. I’m in love with everything Sydney’s Jayney and Nathan Johnson do, and word on the street is that they’re ridiculously nice people to boot. Their world map and flag artworks are flying off the shelves this year and their typographic prints remain firm favourites, seen in all the homes magazines. Nathan and Jayney’s home has even been on the cover of Real Living. Their work is fun, cool and full of love! I interviewed them here.

Typo. For REALLY cheap canvas art catering to mainstream tastes, go no further than Typo. They also have all manner of wooden and wire letters in different colours, metal signs, posters and wall decals.

Urban Road. If you want colourful, large art in a hurry, check out Urban Road. Everything’s on canvas, which is really handy if you’re a renter using 3M hooks. There’s a great range of designs and you have the option of choosing custom colours on some of them. It can be hard to fill a lot of blank wall on a budget but I think these guys provide great value, as well as free shipping Australia wide, and everything arrives ready to hang. They often have great specials too so keep an eye on their website.

So this week, I decided to go on the hunt for cool chevron stuff for the home and there was loads of it! Seems it’s not just Australia loving the old zig-zags…

Affordable art to bring a little sparkle

I like sharing unique affordable art (if everyone had the same Ikea canvases it would be a very sad world) as much as I do supporting fellow bloggers, so I need you to know about Anna White’s new Crystal Love series.

She’s the blogger behind Lona de Anna and the artist behind some great prints you can buy on Etsy.

“The inspiration behind my Crystal Love series came from a long time love and fascination with crystals, and not just gemstones. I mean the sparkly glasses that you tend to only bring out on special occasions, or the amazing chandeliers that shimmer like thousands of diamonds,” she says. “To me, there has always been something so fascinating about the internal structure of a crystal that almost has you completely mesmerised by its beauty. And let’s face it, every girl’s heart does a little flip flop over something sparkly!”

Anna’s right in that the crystal trend is still everywhere. “Loads of images I come across through the blogosphere, I often see that someone has styled their dresser or coffee table with a beautiful raw piece of amethyst sitting ever so beautifully on top of a pile of books. Even famous designers such as Kelly Wearstler draw inspiration from crystals. She often places them in her mood trays or incorporates a crystal sculpture into a space she is styling.”

Inspired, she went ahead and captured the beauty of a crystal in art form. “I am unbelievably happy and proud of the series, even more because in my mind I have created something that is unique, beautiful and affordable enough that others can enjoy it.”

My picks from the new Etsy look book

Etsy Australia has produced its first look book and why not? The contents would all look comfortable on the pages of the best interiors and lifestyle magazines.

I have long been an Etsy-holic. What I like best about the stuff you can buy on Etsy is it’s great value (especially when considering most of it’s handmade), you get your hands on something everyone else doesn’t have and you’re supporting smaller, independent (often local) sellers. Gotta love that.

So here’s my pick of the best bits from the homewares section of the look book, all from Australian sellers.

Geometric design cushion cover, AquaDoorDesigns.etsy.com, $42

Flock of birds cartoon wall decal stickers, littlestickerboy.etsy.com, $18

The sweetest butterfly set free from a vintage china saucer, twicelovedchina.etsy.com, $45

Pantry labels, lovemaestore.etsy.com, $60

Hanging paper flower/floral ball, redzebradesigns.etsy.com, $16

What have been some of your best Etsy purchases? I’d love you to share your favourite Etsy stores below!

If you love a bit of colour on your walls and you don’t take life too seriously, Pea Press is the place to go for affordable Aussie art. It was a happy coincidence!

Pea Press are giving SIX readers the chance to win a large print of their choice from the entire range on Etsy. All you have to do is comment below telling me which one you want and why. Too easy! You must be in Australia and entries close at midnight on Friday.
