3 years of landscaping to get married in acreage back yard

Three years ago, snakes were regular yard guests at Nikki and Luke Hobbs’ newly purchased five-acre Gold Coast Hinterland property. The overgrown yard, once towering in lantarna and tobacco trees, had been ‘let go’ by previous tenants.

Rather than start with the interior of their new home, the couple decided to tackle outside first. And they had a great incentive; wanting to get married in their own (substantial) back yard!

After watching back-to-back episodes of River Cottage Australia, three years and a lot of hard yard work passed, and the couple– a builder and a stylist– were ready to unveil their landscaping while they said ‘I do’ from the comfort of their home.

Here, Nikki shares their top five ‘River Cottage’ makeover tips:

  1. Work with the unique shapes, contours and quirks of the existing parcel of land (ours was once a hydroponic tomato and strawberry farm boasting flat paddocks).
BEFORE Veggie garden
AFTER Veggie garden

2. Hire in the heavy machinery to do the grunt work (ours included countless excavator bookings and eight semi-trailer loads of forest mulch).

BEFORE Back yard
AFTER Back yard

3. Plan your landscaping for success by considering the types of plants currently thriving in your surrounds. (We also opted to hire Ryan from nearby Canopy Wholesale Nursery for expert advice and a killer yard map).

4. Naturally humans are drawn to water including creeks, dams and man-made features and therefore it was important to us to create a space we could enjoy daily (think sunset vino, morning yoga rituals and a wedding ceremony deck).

5. Highlight the natural assets such as river rocks and large established trees. For example, our two DIY rock pillars (now filled with white annual blooms) draw the eye from our house to the backyard creek.

BEFORE Creek
AFTER Creek

“Learning the ropes of acreage living including operating septic systems, petrol generators and large machinery has been incredibly rewarding,” Nikki says. “Our landscaping and renovation plans for Platypus Valley Homestead will continue to evolve as we now kick off our interior renovation.”

Dani Butchart on how she became a stylist and how you can too!

Sponsored by iscd

It was by pure chance that Dani Butchart fell into the styling world. Working at fashion label, Fleur Wood for almost eight years, it was her role as creative producer across the Fleur Wood book series that laid the foundation for her career as a stylist.

Dani
Dani

“I was always crafty and creative, however I didn’t realise straight away that it was worth pursuing as a serious job rather than a hobby,” explains Dani. “I was fortunate to work on countless styling jobs at Fleur Wood, mentored by some of the all-stars in the industry. Then, when I got to produce Food Fashion Love (Fleur’s 2014 book), in which I was styling and creating vignettes, it all clicked into place.”

Wedding

With her passion well and truly alive, Dani enrolled in a Certificate IV in Design and a Diploma of Interior Decoration, Styling and Colour at iscd; believing the experience would tighten up her skill set and help her find her aesthetic. “iscd was an excellent platform to gain confidence in my craft. It was such a great course full of practical information to get moving into the industry. It really brought out my creative juices and aligned me and my ability.”

Graduating in 2012, Dani now runs her own multi disciplinary practice, where she works across interiors, installations and events. Having partnered with premium Australian brands such as Inside Out, Elle Australia and iscd, her biggest styling achievement came when she took out the top prize at Inside Out’s 2015 Search for a Stylist competition. “I was thrilled to be involved and over the moon when editor-in-chief Claire Bradley called to tell me the news!”

Dani’s winning Inside Out entry

With a national accolade and diploma in her back pocket, Dani has quickly become a recognised name in the local styling world. So what would be her advice for any budding stylists? “Start assisting many stylists on an assortment of jobs. There are so many different layers of styling, whether it is food, lifestyle, fashion, homewares, still life, editorial, interiors or creative events. And there are so many clever stylists in Sydney, which leaves the door open for many opportunities for debut stylists. Go with your gut and start to establish your style.”

Looking to have a successful career in design? Take the plunge and start studying with iscd just like Dani. The Etsy Design Awards 2015 are open and I’m a judge!

I’ve been a massive fan of Etsy for years. In fact, I don’t think I’ve stopped shopping from its sellers since I discovered it, including half my wedding (read about my top finds here)! So I was really honoured to be asked to be a judge of this year’s Etsy Design Awards and I can’t wait to discover some new local makers and small businesses. As a fellow online business owner and supporter of Australian creatives (we’ve featured many Etsy store owners on the blog), it’s something close to my heart. I’m pretty much a disaster zone when it comes to making stuff, so I have huge admiration for these clever folk!

Carl Holder
2014 New Talent winner Carl Holder of Foreply

Now in its second year, submissions just opened and you can enter up until 13 July 2015. This year, the awards are also open to New Zealand sellers.

This year’s categories are:

  • Art, Illustration & Papergoods
  • Home & Lifestyle
  • Fashion & Accessories
  • New Talent
  • Business As Unusual.

A winner will be selected from each category, along with a sixth Community’s Choice winner voted by the public. The Business As Unusual category rewards sellers that run their shop and create items in ways that are socially and environmentally responsible, a nod to the Etsy mission: ‘to reimagine ecommerce in ways that build a more fulfilling and lasting world’. The New Talent category aims to showcase creatives new to Etsy who have opened their shop in 2015.

Last year’s new talent winner Carl Holder (above) of Foreply, says: “Winning the award and the resulting media exposure generated masses of interest in my Etsy shop ‐ I went from a few dozen visits a day to literally thousands with interest and encouragement coming from all over the globe. It’s given me confidence to continue what I am doing and allowed me to venture into selling my pieces outside of Australia.”

Helen Souness, managing director, Etsy Australia and Asia, says: “We were so thrilled to see that the Etsy Design Awards, in their inaugural year in 2014, really helped the finalists and winners to grow their creative businesses on the Etsy platform. Perhaps as importantly it gave many emerging talents the confidence to know their work was world-class and that they really could make a living from pursuing their passion for making. We hope to discover many new talents in this year’s Awards and welcome new makers and designers onto Etsy.”

1626_EDA_AU_570x700-Pinterest-Post-Image
Although the recognition alone is a pretty big deal, the prizes on offer aren’t to be sniffed at, including a trip to Etsy’s headquarters in Brooklyn, New York for the New Talent and Community’s Choice winners, as well as coverage on Etsy’s social media and a feature in the October issue of Inside Out for all category winners.

Olive and the Volcano
2014 winners Olive and the Volcano

This year’s awards are in association with Inside Out magazine. Editor in chief Claire Bradley says: “These kinds of awards are a rare opportunity for smaller businesses to have their beautifully crafted products seen by a design‐focused audience. It’s exposure to the very people who treasure true craftsmanship and attention to detail and it’s an acknowledgment of what’s often been years of hard work and sacrifice. Personally, I’ll be looking for entries that raise the bar in terms of materials and finishing details. Quality execution is a must for me. And of course, style that moves past what we’re currently seeing in the market.”

Alongside Claire, Helen and I, Ewan McCoin, senior curator at the National Gallery, makes up the judging panel. We can’t wait to see the entries!

Designer Amanda’s neon and geometric wedding styling

Just over a year ago, I had the honour of being MC at the wedding of my beautiful friend Amanda to her now husband Scott, at a stunning venue in Waiheki, New Zealand.

Amanda_22

Amanda and I met at work at a publishing company in Sydney, where she was a graphic designer and I was an editor. We first bonded over being foreigners (her a Kiwi and me, a Pom!). She is one of my most creative and stylish friends and I knew her wedding would be super cool and non-traditional. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing her wedding styling with you.

Amanda_2

Tell us a bit about the look and style of your wedding and your inspiration. The style came about quite unintentionally, it was just me thinking of all things I love really. Scott and I also joked around that it was going to be an awesome wedding on and it kind of stuck!  My favourite colours are black, grey, white, gold and bright neon coral. They became the colour palette for the wedding (Scott was cool with whatever!). For everyone who knows me, this wasn’t a surprise. Even my engagement ring is a black diamond, set in yellow gold with smaller white diamonds and I don’t leave the house without wearing a pop of neon coral. Crazy? Yes.

Amanda_8

Your invitations were amazing. Do you feel they set the tone for the rest of the wedding? I hope so, that was what I was after! It started with an  idea I had of an invite revealing something as it’s unfolded. I had never wanted a traditional invite as it just wasn’t us. The folded idea took me to origami and I found the perfect fold online. I  wanted to incorporate a bright neon coral colour, of course, so I began a search for neon paper and found the perfect fluoro red origami paper and bought tonnes of it. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but it was so perfect I couldn’t leave it!

Amanda_3

I thought of a few things to create in origami, but the hearts were the obvious choice, and they slotted into the invite perfectly. The origami and invite ended up being the catalyst for the theme I guess, as I really love geometric shapes (although arguably the theme was just ‘Amanda’s favourite stuff’)! I ended up finding origami-style lanterns and some amazing geometric-shaped candles, so it all worked in nicely.

Amanda_10

How would you describe the style of your wedding in 3 words? Bold. Geometric. Personal.

How important was the styling element of the wedding? It was important to me because being a designer it became my own little (big!) project. I didn’t want someone else to do the creative work, that’s the fun part.

Amanda_14

How much did your job as a graphic designer and being a creative person impact on your ideas for the wedding? Probably a lot more than I had imagined. I probably went a bit more crazy over the detail. My invite turned into a more elaborate project than I had first imagined, and the favours became personally designed screen printed tea towels, with printed paper wraps! Every part of it grew as I had more and more ideas! It was dangerous!

Amanda_7

What did you spend the most money on in terms of styling? What was the biggest bargain? I spent a lot on the geometric candles, they were through a local stylist and imported from Sweden. I accidentally ordered two boxes instead of one. Each box was over NZ$300. Yikes (I am now in the process of selling off the other box. Any takers?)! The biggest bargains were the table centres, as they were mostly homemade. And using succulents instead of flower arrangements was a huge saver. They were $5 each but looked amazing. I also didn’t have a cake made and instead ordered macarons to put onto a tower I found. I bought two chocolate mud cakes from a beautiful chocolate shop to put either side: $50 each!

Amanda_35
Amanda_29

Was anything really hard to source or to get just right? Making sure all the bits I ordered online were the right colour match was difficult. It was hard to get the right neon coral! It hadn’t all been put together until the day of setting up, as a lot was brought over to New Zealand with me from Sydney. I was so relieved when it all worked! The only sourcing issue was with the lanterns. I had them ordered through a local stylist, but then she couldn’t get them, as they they had sold out. So I began a hunt online, and eventually found them all to buy in various parts of the world. Way more expensive!

Amanda_4

Did you enjoy doing so much yourself and making it very personal? I did but it did become a lot larger than I had thought. I think I bit off a little more than I could chew, and in the end, that became a race against time and quite stressful!

What was people’s reaction and what things did they notice? The first thing people noticed was the view, of course! But I think people loved to see something different, the colour and the detail. They thought my tea towels were a cool gift, and enjoyed the macarons!

Amanda_19

Did the venue dictate the styling or do you think would you have had similar styling in a different venue? We fell in love with the venue ( I mean, who wouldn’t, right!?) and the styling was personal to me and luckily they suited each other. I think wherever we had chosen, I would have done the same styling.

Amanda_20

How did the styling of the venue tie in with the dresses, jewellery etc? My dress had a black bodice with a strap on the back, and my shoes were black and gold. The girls had black dresses with a geometric crossover front and black crossover shoes. It all tied in nicely. In mine and the girls’ hair were bright coral flowers. The girls wore gold bracelets and their earrings were actually called ‘origami’ and were gold triangles overlapped! I know, I was a bit obsessive!

Amanda_18
Amanda_16

Anything else you’d like to share about your big day with our readers? It was an amazing day, it all came together so well and the sun was shining! We were so lucky to have all our friends and family there too, considering we are from different sides of the Tasman. The venue was such a find, it’s worth hunting out those gems! The styling was a big job, but so amazing to do. I would recommend getting in and doing it if you’re tempted, it’s so rewarding!

What a gorgeous day to be lucky enough to be a small part of! What do you think of Amanda’s non-conventional and very personal wedding styling? Would you like to see more wedding styling on Interiors Addict?

Amanda and Scott were married at Waikopou, a private house on Waiheki Island, New Zealand. They kept the venue a secret so we had no idea what to expect until we were bused there on the day. And wow, what a venue and view it was!

We go on holiday to Capetown with The Block’s Darren Palmer

By Darren Palmer

Four years ago, I travelled to South Africa for the first time for a quick holiday and to get married. Since then, I’ve been several times and Capetown and its surrounds hold a really special place in my heart. This year, I went back for my best man Gregory Mellor’s wedding, staying in the most amazing home that he designed in the Karoo. They call it “God’s house” for good reason. Have a look at it published in Condé Nast House & Garden.

Making my way back into Capetown, I was fortunate to have a guided tour through the grand old dame, the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel.

The grounds and scale of this beautiful old establishment are something to behold. The most recent addition to its many buildings and types of rooms are the Garden Cottage Suites.

ocap_1366x400_room_garden_cottage_suite02

It’s a row of eight restored historic cottage that sit opposite a secluded, and adults-only, pool with pool house.

ocap_1366x400_pool06

Each cottage is enclosed by low fences with private rose gardens that were in full bloom during my visit. The pool house feels like the sort you’d expect to see in a Hamptons mansion, and the rooms also have a nod to the classic Hamptons aesthetic.

ocap_1366x400_room_garden_cottage_suite05

The cottages have grass cloth wallpaper-lined studies, part of a classic, stylish interior scheme that brings these beautiful old cottages to life. There are lights throughout by one of my favourite lighting suppliers, Visual Comfort, in their classic, American style. There are king-sized four-poster beds, marble bathrooms and separate living and dining areas with views over the rose gardens and the pool through to Lion’s Head and Signal Hill. The interiors are superb and the cottages super sweet. Next time I stay, I’ll be beating down their door.

Take a look inside Darren’s own Sydney home.

Reminiscing on our first wedding anniversary

Who can resist the urge to reminisce on their first wedding anniversary? I can’t believe quite how fast the last 12 months has gone or how much we have packed in, including half a year gallivanting around Europe and the US. It really has been the most brilliant start to marriage!

_21C4098

If you missed it at the time, you have to check out our wedding video. Of course we are biased, but we think it is incredible and cannot thank The Story of Us enough for giving us the perfect way to remember our big day and share it with friends and family for years to come. We have definitely looked at is so many more times than our photos!

But while we’re at it, here are a few of my favourite photos:

I know we all say it, but it truly was the best day of my life. Pure magic! In some respects, I’d love to do it all again, but in others, I’m happy to keep my perfect memories. It couldn’t have been any better.

But I’m pretty certain the best is yet to come! Thank you, Damian, for the happiest 365 days and here’s to many more.

Online shopping fix: The Eye Spy Milk Bar

Behind the handmade wooden homewares, the custom-made and personalised pieces and the range of inspiring prints for your walls, is father and daughter duo Ray Leetham and Katy Thomas.

the eye spy milk bar

As the masterminds behind online boutique The Eye Spy Milk Bar, Ray makes all the wooden homewares and Katy adds the finishing touches, which often feature a little paint and glitter job! Katy also designs all of the prints in Melbourne, loving the fact that she gets to keep the whole design and manufacturing process local. “In a world where so many things are made overseas, it’s refreshing and unique to bring the handmade element to life,” explains Katy. “Our aim is to create a range of fun homewares at an affordable price. We take everyday items and look to inject a splash of colour, a personalised element or a mix of interesting patterns and textures.”

A keen collector and design enthusiast, for many years Katy had been taking orders from her friends for her Dad to make a range of custom-made homewares. The interest continued to build to such an extent that she decided to launch The Eye Spy Milk Bar Etsy store last year, to house the collection of her Dad’s handmade homewares and make taking orders that little bit easier.

il_570xN.485088339_68d7

With many of the pieces custom-made, all products can be configured to fit a customer’s exact requirements or personalised for the perfect gift. “A customer might have specific requirements for a bedside table and we love creating something to fit. We don’t like to work in mass-produced quantities, but focus more on creating and designing custom-made pieces or a limited run of each piece.”

With many of The Eye Spy Milk Bar’s homewares perfect for weddings and events, you can also hire some of them for a special day, including wedding signs, benches and ladders. Most items ship Australia wide, with larger pieces being delivered within Melbourne’s metropolitan area. Shop online.

Period Melbourne home belonging to interior decorator and Home & Away star’s mother

This beautiful period property, bought as the worst house on the best street in Melbourne’s Hawthorn, belongs to interior decorator Charis James, mother of former Home & Away actress Tessa James.

CJL_016_1

CJL_041_1
Charis says designing for yourself, rather than clients, is very different

As a design professional, tackling a serious renovation project which would also become her family’s home and living on site the whole time, was challenging to say the least. “Designing for yourself is very different,” Charis says. “A lot of the designing takes place in your head a long time before the construction begins. As a designer it gives you total control and flexibility to lead with your instincts and change your mind and make decisions on the spot. Prioritising things with the spaces that you know will make all the difference to the final product and not having to convince someone else to spend extra money, means your design isn’t compromised.”

Isn’t it time you got all that artwork framed?

Decorate your home without the need of a hammer or drill and without damaging your walls with 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, which hold up to 7kg. Visit go.3m.com/loveyourwalls/ for decorating inspiration and the chance to win some great prizes.

There are certain jobs we all struggle to get around to: sorting out the spare bedroom, organising the laundry cupboard and, in my case, getting artwork framed.

I finally framed this precious Megan Hess illustration of me as a bride to be

The cluster of cardboard tubes in the corner of my home office has been getting out of hand lately. And it struck me that it’s all kinds of wrong to purchase beautiful things for your walls and then leave them rolled up where you, and nobody else, can enjoy them. So I got tough with myself and promised myself I would get at least 3 things framed this month. This has at least made a dent in the collection (I swear those cardboard tubes are breeding!)

Personalised artwork would make the perfect wedding gift

Carly Saban loves creating beautiful things. She’s also a huge romantic! So when demand increased for the custom side of her artwork, she decided to create something for lovers!

Love Does Not Come To An End Custom Hoop Artwork (styled and cropped)

I was lucky enough to be gifted this memento of our recent wedding by Carly, of Bowerbird Living. How sweet?! She made it super personal and special by incorporating part of the bible verse my dad read in church, and the vibrant colours of our wedding flowers. I love it!

Get the look: the Interiors Addict guide to wedding styling

Today it’s 2 months since I married my love. How times flies when you’re honeymooning, moving house and enjoying married life! Before I completely let go of being a recent bride and get on with being a wife, I thought I’d share one last wedding post with you, this time about the styling aspect.

interiors addict wedding styling

It will come as no surprise that I was more interested in what my wedding would look like than what I’d look like! I don’t DO dresses. I do however, do decor! So I had a lot of fun with this part of wedding planning. Here are some highlights and details of all my suppliers.

Perhaps the most talked about things at my wedding were: the dress, the flowers and the vintage caravan which I had arranged to serve tea and biscuits (I know, how English) as a fun and pretty time-killer after church and before the reception. That Vintage Caravan were brilliant. I’d seen their pink caravan (Sweet Jane’s Travelling Teahouse) at events before but when I found out they had a new addition, Spencer, who was not only very handsome but also navy and therefore on colour scheme, it was just meant to be!

_21C3959

Suffice to say none of my guests had ever been to a wedding where they served tea from a caravan parked on the street outside the church before and everyone said it was “very Jen”. The priest, in his wisdom, didn’t hesitate to give us the go ahead. Kelly Holcroft and her team did a top job of styling the grassy area around Spencer too, which suited the relaxed, pretty vibe we were going for. Total event professionals!

10 things I learned from planning our wedding

1. A wedding planner or on-the-day co-ordinator can be a lifesaver! We used the lovely Katie Moore from Piccadilly Events. I was all over every detail of our wedding. I had spreadsheets and lists; LOTS of lists. So I wasn’t sure I really needed someone to help on the day (as well as my many generous friends who got stuck in) because I thought I’d already organised everything. Wrong! When there’s a wedding there is ALWAYS something else that needs doing! Katie was our wedding angel. So many guests commented on how fabulous she was.

That's Katie behind the flowers!
That’s Katie behind the flowers!

As well as the million things she probably did that I knew nothing about, she took the flowers from the church to the reception, made sure everyone knew where they should be and when and made sure my dad had a torch to read his speech with (he was seriously nervous that his eyesight was going to let him down, although I was of course oblivious!). When I arrived at the church, she produced a small tin of M&Ms, offered them to me and said: “Sugar hit?” Brilliant! Katie came to our rehearsal too so she knew the plan for the day as well as I did (we merged our respective run sheets!) and who all the key players were. I thoroughly recommend having someone like Katie as a go-to girl on the day. I told everyone that if they had any issues at all they should go and speak to the girl in the yellow dress (yes, she even told me what she’d be wearing in advance).

And she did all of this IN HEELS.

2. While we’re on the subject of extra pairs of hands, the next thing I learned (after a while) is that it’s okay to ask for help.

The best Etsy finds from my wedding

I spent a LOT of time on Etsy prior to our wedding and I only really realised quite how much I bought for it via my favourite online shopping destination recently. This is because when people asked me where did I get this or that, the answer was, more often than not, Etsy! So, here’s what I bought and where you can get it. Enjoy…

Swarovski crystal earrings (worn by me). $58.96 from simplychic93. I really wanted them blue and a little different to the usual pearl bridal earrings but couldn’t afford real sapphires. It took two online purchases before I hit the nail on the head with these.

My veil (serious bargain and custom made to my requirements by a lovely girl in America). $60 including shipping from the States from PrettyThingsByJenni.

A little bit of IKEA in Tokyo

Yes, I’m on honeymoon but I just had to sneak online and share this with you because it made me laugh. Damian and I were exploring Harajuku when I spotted an IKEA sign down a little side street.

ikea japan

Turns out it was a little pop-up shop introducing the latest range. I managed to glean this much from the English-speaking staff member. Apparently (according to an IKEA employee who follows me on Instagram) Japan is the only country that has its own specific range, tailored to the Japanese culture and lifestyle. How fascinating. From what I saw (a Japanese version of what was still clearly IKEA) it seems to be the case!

Our incredible wedding video by The Story of Us

We’re a little bit in love with our wedding video and very happy to share it as so many of you have sent well wishes and asked about our day.

Jen + Damian from The Story of Us on Vimeo.

We had a beautiful day, full of love and smiles. We honestly wouldn’t change a thing. So many times we looked around and said to each other: “Can this really be our wedding?!”

Tom and Kate (who also designed our invites) from The Story of Us captured and edited our day so well. We are thrilled! We almost didn’t get a videographer but we are so glad we squeezed it into our budget, especially as my sister wasn’t able to come from the UK. I remember asking lots of married friends in the run-up if they had any regrets about their own wedding (in case I’d missed something important!). Time and again they told me they wished they’d worn a veil and they wish they’d had a videographer. I’m so glad I had both! As much as we love our photos too, the film is such a lovely keepsake and one day we hope to show it to our kids!

Better late than never: the 7 Vignettes October winner is…

Apologies for the late announcement but I was getting married at the weekend (yes, it was magic, and yes, I’ll be sharing photos on here!). For the first time, the winner of this month’s 7 Vignettes is a previous winner! Eatlivelaugh, otherwise known as Shantel Ross, was also our winner in June. But as you’ll see from her images, she is very deserving of a second pat on the back!

eatlivelaughFlawless if you ask me!

Shantel wins a room makeover courtesy of our sponsor, Paint Place. Guest judge, their marketing manager Jennifer Cameron, said: “We loved the whimsical nature of her vignettes, her images were stylish and the subjects she chose to photograph were a little alternative. We liked her interesting take on each of the themes and that each of her vignettes also worked together as a collection of 7.”

I’ve asked my good friend and former colleague Lorna Brett, who has HEAPS of social media and community management experience under her belt, as well as a serious love of all things interiors and a delightful personality, to blog-sit for me and look after the social media side of keeping you guys entertained! There’s nobody I’d trust more for the job.

An Aladdin’s cave of vintage props and furniture for stylists and brides at Vintage Patina

As I may have mentioned a few times, I’m currently planning my wedding (less than 3 months — eek!) and you may not be surprised to hear that I’m all about the decor and the styling of the reception.

vintage patina 3

I’ll be honest with you: I’ve put a lot more thought into what the tables will wear than what I’ll wear! Much as I love my reception venue and its location, when I saw its outdoor furniture, I knew it just HAD TO GO (or at least be removed for my big day!). In my online search for replacement furniture I stumbled across Vintage Patina, who are new to Sydney but by no means new to props, collecting and weddings! Their website is great and actually lists almost everything they have for hire with prices (why can’t more people do this?!) but you can’t beat seeing things in the flesh so off I went to their Gladesville space with my friend Emma, who is helping me with the styling.
