Outer team up with Queer Eye’s Bobby Berk on outdoor dining sets

Outer’s first ever dining collection has arrived in Australia just in time for summer. To celebrate the launch, they teamed up with Queer Eye’s design expert Bobby Berk to put a refreshing twist on dining al fresco. Aussies can now enjoy the most innovative outdoor dining furniture that doesn’t compromise on comfort, durability or sustainability. It’ll set you back at least 10 grand though!

Outer is on a mission to solve all of the pain points of traditional outdoor furniture. The brand is raising the bar by creating sophisticated, durable and sustainable outdoor living products that last a lifetime – and this dining collection is no different.

Perfect for the harsh Aussie climate, the new dining tables are made from aluminium and teak that won’t overheat, ensuring a pleasurable outdoor dining experience. The table is also outfitted with the innovative OuterShell protective cover to prevent debris from building up when the table is not in use.

Expecting a large party? Outer’s extendable dining table has you covered, with built-in expandable leaves to accommodate up to 12 guests. To perfectly complement the tables, the director’s chairs are a timeless design that are made with all-weather Textilene fabric that repels water and resists mildew and fading.

On the collection, Bobby said: “I like that Outer has taken the best elements from their seating collection, like the clean lines and timeless materials, and translated it into an equally stylish dining collection. These pieces have a lot of versatility and could work on a small deck, a large patio, or even a balcony. And the best part: the table has a built-in extension so that whether you are dining for just your family or a larger group everyone has a seat at the table.”

Terry Lin, co-founder of Outer, said: “We’re thrilled to launch our dining collection in Australia. Not only was this collection designed to withstand the infamous Australian weather, but also to make it easier for people to spend more time dining, working or relaxing outside.”

Chairs from $800 each and tables from $5,200. For more information on Outer’s products.

If it’s good enough for Martha Stewart: Outer furniture arrives in Australia

Californian outdoor furniture company Outer is finally available in Australia! Outer’s sophisticated, durable and sustainable outdoor living products are well loved in the States, with famous fans including iconic homemaker Martha Stewart and electronic music duo The Chainsmokers. Well, if it’s good enough for Martha…

Outer Teak collection

Outer offers collections in wicker, teak and aluminium, all designed to withstand harsh environments while incorporating sustainable practices to reduce fast furniture. Their All-Weather Wicker collection and 1188 Eco-Friendly Rugs are made from recycled plastic bottles. The Teak collection is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and for each teak product sold, Outer works with farms to plant at least 15 new saplings. Meanwhile, the Aluminium collection is guaranteed to withstand over 10 years of outside use.

Another innovative product available is the Bug Shield Blanket, helping us say goodbye to being eaten alive by mozzies this summer! These lightweight throw blankets are enhanced with odourless insect shield technology based on insect repellent found in plants such as chrysanthemums.

Outer Bug Shield Blanket – Striped Plaid. RRP $150

Outer was founded in 2019 by Jiake Liu and Terry Lin, with the mission to bring back the joy of spending quality time outside. Despite a climate that allows for outdoor living year-round, some research shows Aussies spend up to 90 percent (lockdowns aside) of their time indoors.

“We are excited to formally introduce Outer to Australians, and to give people an opportunity to reconnect and enjoy the outdoors,” said Terry. “Every choice we’ve made, from our product innovations to our shopping experience, has been to improve the lives of our customers. We saw a stale industry ripe for innovation, and we wanted to create sustainable furniture that made it easier to live life outside,” said Jaike.

L-R: Co-founders Jiake Liu and Terry Lin

Conscious design and innovation are at the heart of everything Outer does. The company developed their own proprietary fabrics that are both eco-friendly and stain, fade, and mould resistant. They also introduced the famous OuterShell, a patented built-in cover that rolls out in seconds to protect cushions from everyday dirt and moisture.

Outer’s debut collection was constructed by Jiake’s family-owned factory in China and this close relationship and partnership means that products are carefully crafted, while also ensuring factories maintain fair wages, safe working environments and benefits for employee families and their children.

Outer use what they call ‘Neighbourhood Showrooms’- customers are able to browse local showrooms online and make an appointment with a local host to see, sit on, and feel products in person. Hosts are compensated whether or not the visitor ends up purchasing. Those interested in applying for Australia’s Neighbourhood Showroom program can apply here. To become a showroom host, customers complete an application and receive a 10% discount on their order. After a stringent vetting process, those accepted receive discounts on products, early access to new collections, and the ability to help develop new Outer products from the ground up.

Covet my coffee table: with Osier Belle’s Penny Camplisson

After such a beautiful week of our 7 Vignettes challenge over on Instagram earlier this month, it seemed a great time to share what’s on someone’s coffee table and we particularly love all the sentimental objects on Penny Camplisson’s.

The bowl of treats here for example, is actually a dog bowl which belonged to Oliver George Womble, her late dog who went with her everywhere. “He was such a character and I miss him terribly. I use his water bowl for snacks on my table, depending on the week and mood I’m in.

“I’m currently replenishing it with probiotic chocolate snacks that are delicious and curb my craving for the naughty stuff. It has been known to hold guacamole for dinner parties and cherries at Christmas!”

Penny is the owner of luxury outdoor furniture brand Osier Belle, and also on her coffee table is a photo of her daughter Isabella (now 22 and currently travelling around the UK with her boyfriend in a camper van!) and her mum in Paris. “I’m also very close to Mumma, she’s so funny and young-hearted. She normally comes to stay with me for at least six months of the year but it’s currently not possible.”

The zinc house holding candles is very symbolic. “Home is extremely important to me as I have moved around a lot (34 times!) and I light this with candles every night to relax and celebrate where I am in my life. It’s been a real challenge to get to where I am. My home, wherever I’ve lived, has always been my security blanket and that is why furniture design is so important and natural to me, I think.”

Penny found the pretty teacup in a market in Vienna. Her and her partner Michael were lucky enough to fit in a fabulous backpacking adventure just months prior to COVID. “The cup constantly reminds me how grateful we should be as things change beyond your control so it’s really important to live in the moment,” she adds. “I love the colours and the texture in the pottery. You can feel it has been handmade. It holds my tape measure I am forever using for work, plus my pencils and sharpener I constantly use for sketches and designs.”

Amazing backyard transformation for under $1,200

Interior designer Katy Thomas is one of the many Australians who has shifted her focus to revamping her existing space, and creating an oasis in her backyard this summer. She also managed to do so on a tiny budget, spending under $1,200 and all at Bunnings!

After
Before

Reflecting on the original space, she says: “This part of our backyard was so overgrown. We had so much bamboo, old pavers, and it was a space we didn’t use.”

Katy says that it was very important for this outdoor space to connect with the rest of her home, so she utilised lots of white and natural timbers, in order to extend her interior design style, and create a feeling of relaxed sophistication.

It was also important, on such a small budget, to cleverly incorporate the existing features of the space. “We have so much bamboo,” says Katy, “So the plan was to neaten it up by creating a white screen fence which really helps to frame this corner of the garden. I love how the bamboo provides some greenery behind the fence!”

After

This makeover has also completely altered the way in which Katy uses this space, and now, she says, is the perfect time of year to enjoy it. “I’m so excited for Christmas out here!” she adds.

“The biggest transformation to this space is definitely the white screen fence,” continues Katy. “The most affordable way to achieve this look was to use fence palings from Bunnings which cost $1.40 each. Once painted white they look amazing. The new round pavers have also helped to finish off this space.”

Katy utilised the space carefully, creating different zones using furniture. She acknowledges the importance of planning, and suggests that prospective renovators create a wish list online, so that they know the costs upfront.

After

She also recommends that to gather inspiration and cultivate a cohesive look, creating a moodboard is a game-changer. “I moodboard every project which makes the process so much easier. I often visualise the beautiful end result I want, then work backwards researching all the elements I’d need to achieve this look within my budget.”

Of course, you don’t have to completely overhaul your backyard in order to rejuvenate it for the summer. “A small change can make a big difference,” says Katy. “For example, a coat of fresh, white paint is an easy and inexpensive way to brighten and refresh a space.”

Thinking outside the box can also be helpful, for achieving the look you want within your budget. In Katy’s yard, she used round pavers for something a little different against the white stones.

Outdoor rooms: Neale Whitaker explains how to create a backyard oasis

“It’s not a new phenomenon, but Australians really did pioneer the outdoor room,” says The Block judge and Love It or List It host Neale Whitaker. He puts it down to our lifestyle and fabulous weather. And with the open-plan interior trend having dominated for over a decade now, it’s natural that it would would eventually extend to the outdoors.

Neale on the King Living Zaza outdoor sofa

“In recent years, people have become aware of how an outdoor room can enhance their lifestyle while adding value to a home,” says Neale, who sees the backyard (or even deck) as no longer just home to a BBQ and a couple of sun loungers, but a legitimate additional ‘room’ all of its own.

“I used to live in an apartment in Sydney’s Alexandria and the deck was almost the same size as the indoor part of the home,” says Neale who, through clever design, was able to use the space for much of the year. “I designed the deck just as I had the indoors. I put a sofa out there, coffee table and art on the wall,” says Neale who found it was a wonderful way to increase the footprint of the home.

But ensuring a seamless result, from the inside of a home to the outdoors, hasn’t always been easy; in large part due to a lack of available outdoor products. For example, once upon a time, if you favoured a Scandi aesthetic there was no way that look could continue through to your home’s outdoor area, but now it can.

This King Living Zaza outdoor sofa would look just as at home indoors
This gorgeous King Living Zaza outdoor sofa (upholstered in Oceania fabric) would look just as at home indoors

“Outdoor furniture was once pretty generic. It all felt the same. There was a lot of that woven plastic furniture from the Philippines which didn’t wear very well,” says Neale, who is an ambassador for King Living. He explains that not only are outdoor furniture designs better than ever, but the outdoor fabric technologies are too. “Given that amazing strides have been made on this front, you can now replicate the style you have inside, on the outside too.”

So with summer on our doorstep, what are Neale’s top tips for creating a fabulous outdoor room?

Assess the space

First up you need to really look at the space; what are its dimensions and what sort of light and shade do you have? “An outdoor room is a wonderful idea but if you have no sun protection you will need to think about how you can live in the space,” says Neale, who suggests installing a sail cloth as a great initial step.

How do you live?

Next up, you need to think about how you are going to live in the space. “I would give the same advice to someone renovating their kitchen or bathroom. You should think about what you really need and don’t overspend on unnecessary items,” says Neale who cites the outdoor BBQ as a great example of an often-underutilised item. “Depending on how close your kitchen is, you may not need to invest in an elaborate and expensive BBQ,” says Neale.

Furniture and accessories

“Stop thinking of the backyard as a backyard and think of it as a logical extension of a living space and apply the same rules to create it. Think of it as a room without walls,” says Neale who believes that getting the furniture right is fundamental.

“Obviously everyone has to work to a budget but if you can, I think it’s worth investing in a quality big ticket item such as a comfortable and stylish sofa,” says Neale. Then pair it with a couple of stylish outdoor chairs, an outdoor rug, coffee table and even lamps if you’re adventurous. “If you’re going to use the space at night you do need to consider your light sources,” says Neale, who loves finishing off an outdoor space with an array of gorgeous pots and plants.

An outdoor oasis all year round: how?

As we firmly step into winter, the lure of venturing out to the backyard may not be as enticing as it is during summer. But this should not be the case! The alfresco is perfectly positioned to celebrate the outdoors and integrate the indoor dining and living areas of your home. With an abundance of style and functionality, the undercover alfresco is ideal for entertaining or a perfect space to unwind and relax, regardless of season. Cameron Fordred, Henley’s landscape designer, shares his insights on having an alfresco oasis all year round and how to maximise the space for you and your family.

Couch and dining comforts

To ensure you keep your outdoor furniture in great condition for use all year round, you need to make sure it is protected against the elements. If your furniture is not kept undercover, the best way to keep your exposed furniture safe from weathering and discolouration is by using a heavy duty exterior outdoor cover when it’s not in use. With a wide range of covers available to suit outdoor lounges, dining settings and umbrellas, there is definitely one to keep you covered!

Just remember, outdoor furniture is made for the elements but it still needs to be looked after. Try protecting your furniture with an external grade protectant spray like Scotchgard Outdoor Fabric Protector. It not only protects it from water damage but it also resists stains and makes clean-up easier and quicker when accidents occur.

The heat is on

There are a range of outdoor heaters available on the market from the freestanding patio heaters or small tabletop units to the larger wood burning fire pits. There are options to ensure everyone is kept warm.

Ceiling mounted radiant electric heaters are a great option for a covered area. Their subtle, minimalist and sleek design ensure they can be placed directly above your entertaining space. If nothing beats toasting marshmallows over a roaring, crackling fire, you can’t go past a wood burning cast iron fire pit or bowl. These bowls come in a range of sizes and designs. If you just want the look without all the hassle of chopping wood, perhaps consider a bioethanol burner. From tabletop size to something that creates a dramatic effect, there are lots of options to give you that warm, cosy feeling.

For the budget conscious, look at a group of freestanding refillable bamboo torches available from your local hardware store. Scatter these throughout your backyard and they are a great way to create ambience. Please remember that unattended fireplaces can cause accidents, always ensure that all fires are supervised.

Sizzle on the BBQ

Who doesn’t love a BBQ? Live your best life outdoors with a fully integrated outdoor kitchen. BBQ, side burners, fridge, drawers and cabinets. State of the art materials and technology allow for year-round entertaining. BBQs, smokers, that little slice of Italy with a pizza oven, built in, compact, freestanding, portable the options are endless. Why not try the latest craze- meat smokers including; offset, drum, cabinet, and egg, fuelled by gas, electric, pellet and solid fuels, are perfect for these cold winter days.

Hot on trend

Making waves in the back yard at the moment include hanging chairs, beans bags and industrial finish cement tabletops.  The table tops feature powder-coated aluminium frames, hardwood tops, are 100% UV resistant and waterproof and boast modern colour combinations including Matte White and Gun Metal Grey. Enjoy inviting friends over and having everyone relaxed, comfortable and making memories that will last a lifetime.

The Cohen 22, featured in the Cranbourne Display Centre, has a stunning pizza oven on show in the Alfresco area.  Perfect for weekend entertaining or weekday dinners, it may provide further backyard inspiration for culinary delights.

Mistakes to avoid

Try not to clutter the space. You may feel the need to have a table and outdoor seating but this can lead to the area feeling tight and uninviting. Go for a larger table with plenty of seating, ensuring everyone feels comfortable. Avoid using indoor furniture outdoors as this outdoor environment will ruin your furniture.

Cameron Fordred is a landscape designer for Henley, one of Australia’s leading homebuilders with over 30 years of experience in the building industry.

Jen’s deck is summer ready + win my outdoor dining set

Sponsored by Early Settler

My excitement about using our deck this spring and summer is palpable. We had the deck installed while I was in hospital giving birth to Charlie almost a year ago now (I know, where does the time go?!) and really didn’t use it as much as we could have due to having a newborn, being too permanently tired to remember we even had an outdoor area, and keeping him out of the harsh summer sun! We’ve since had a retractable sun awning installed so we’re now all set to enjoy the good weather which keeps teasing us in Sydney lately, swapping between four seasons in one week at times!

When we did the deck we got rid of the old timber pergola, which means we now need furniture which can withstand the elements (as there’s no roof to protect from the rain), so we’ve added to our existing Early Settler lounges (no longer available) with the Blake table and benches. Made of powder coated aluminium, they’re perfect for outdoor use. I love the simple but sturdy design, based on a classic picnic table, and the way the white contrasts with the grey deck. At a generous 240cm long, they’re perfect for big family get-togethers.

As with indoor spaces, I love to give the outdoor space a little refresh with the seasons, so I chose some new outdoor cushions (mixed in with a few indoor ones because why not?! They’re easy enough to bring inside or throw in a storage box) and accessories. The deck’s looking picture perfect so I’m now planning all kinds of summer entertaining!

All the aluminium furniture out here is not only super hardy, it’s really not heavy at all, which means we can move it around to suit the way we are using the space, whether that’s a party, a big family sit down dinner or Seb hurtling around on his scooter. I’ve lost count of the different furniture configurations we have already tried, and the best thing about benches is they’re a lot easier to move than eight chairs!

Speaking of eight chairs, this table can comfortably fit 10 people with four on each bench and a Cate chair at either end if needed. I love the perforated look of the back of these chairs which adds some much needed texture. They’re also stackable, which makes them practical too, and they come in other colours if you feel like adding a pop of coral or slate blue to your al fresco.

Regardless of the fact that Early Settler are a partner of ours, I can honestly say I recommend their outdoor range all the time because you really can’t beat it for value, quality and having so much variety to suit all tastes. I’m also really impressed with their more contemporary designs which are really different and not at all what you’d expect for outdoor.

Outdoor round-up: The latest furniture and accessories

While it seems a little odd to even consider the great outdoors (given we’re still in the throes of winter) there have been so many fabulous new outdoor furniture and accessories hitting the market lately that we just couldn’t wait to share. From outdoor rugs to chic occasional chairs and unusual lighting, here you’ll find our pick of the bunch, well in time for summer entertaining.

Miss Amara indoor/outdoor rugs
We’ve featured this fabulous online rug purveyor before but its indoor/outdoor rugs are definitely worth a mention – after all, an outdoor rug may be just the finishing touch your alfresco scene needs. Both stylish and practical, these rugs are woven with durable mould and sun-resistant fibres and should any mishaps occur, they can be washed with water and laid out in the sun to dry.

Tait & Mokum Summer 2019/20 collection
Australian and New Zealand based textile house Mokum has collaborated with Australian outdoor furniture brand Tait to create a stunning new outdoor range. Taking design cues from the 1970’s, the pieces look almost too gorgeous to leave outside – rounded and tubular frames combine with textural weaves, plush velvets and Tropical-inspired prints. The unique fabrics have been built to withstand the harsh Aussie elements.

Robert Plumb
Robust enough for the outdoors but stylish enough to come inside, ‘The Ribbon range’ is the latest outing from Australian outdoor brand Robert Plumb. Designed by David Harrison of Design Daly, the collection takes inspiration from Bauhaus tubular metal furniture reinterpreted in a flat steel bar.

“Robert Plumb wanted something different to what existed, a product that is visually finer and more streamlined. The benefit of metal is that the uncluttered, open and airy result feels lean and minimal in appearance,” says David of the range that comes in 11 standard finishes for the frame (stainless steel and custom shades available on request) and is upholstered in the Westbury Textiles Linnen range.

Designed by Kun Qi, the Chinese brand Kun Design is now available in Australia at DOMO. Inspired by colour and form of exotic plants and flowers, I love the bold splashes of colour throughout the range that includes seating, tables and accessories.

Spence & Lyda
A unique take on outdoor lighting, this GRAS in/out adjustable wall lamp is rather fabulous and it’s available locally at Spence & Lyda. Unlike most outdoor lights (designed to illuminate walls), this one acts more like an indoor version and delivers directional light ideal for a balcony, terrace, outdoor lounge or dining setting.

Coco Republic
With over 100 new pieces, the latest outdoor offering from Coco Republic draws on Californian modernism and the sophistication of the Italian Riviera. There’s a mix of natural and man-made materials and textures (including teak, aluminium, steel and rope) as well as an array of shapes including lounges, occasional chairs, dining tables and chairs as well as a poolside offering too. I love the new outdoor geometric sculpture range (made from timber and brass) and the cushions are rather stylish also.

Outdoor styling: A stylist’s top tips for summer

With the warmer weather already already upon us, no doubt many of you have been spending more time outdoors and, for many of us, that means relaxing or entertaining at home in an alfresco area. And with the line between indoor and outdoor spaces continuing to blur (thank you Aussie weather!) we had a chat with interior stylist, and owner of Dot + Pop, Eve Gunson recently for her tips on how to get your outdoor spaces looking super stylish in time for Christmas entertaining.

Seating
“Having comfortable outdoor furniture is a must if you spend a lot of time outdoors in the warmer months. And there are so many gorgeous options for outdoor furniture in all shapes, sizes and price brackets,” says Eve.

Dot and Pop courtyard
Eve’s courtyard has myriad seating options

Your choice of furniture depends largely on the way that you like to use your outdoor space. If long table dinners are your thing then a large table and plenty of chairs is in order, but if your favourite type of alfresco activity is curling up with a book then a comfortable outdoor lounge or two is probably a better choice. “If you enjoy relaxing and reading your book, look into a modern take on the sun lounger,” says Eve.

Dress it up
Personally, I view my outdoor area as yet another styling opportunity and it can be particularly fun to decorate it for a special occasion. “Add a pop of colour and some summer fun into your outdoor space by using soft furnishings and decor items. Use outdoor cushions on your furniture, string up some festoon lighting, use statement pots and plants to add personality and if you’re up for it, you could even paint your fence, veranda or pergola for a fresh new season look,” says Eve who suggests investing in a weather-resistent rug too.

Seating
As a cushion addict, stylish outdoor cushions are a must!

Create ambience
Fairy lights, string lights or festoon – whatever you call them they are wondrous at creating atmosphere but Eve suggests looking at more permanent options too. “When those summer nights full of friends and drinks extend later than expected it’s great to have outdoor lighting and a heater option,” says Eve.

“The IXL multi-function Fresco Aurora Outdoor Heater is an outdoor entertaining appliance like no other. The app controlled Fresco Aurora combines ambient infrared heat, dimmable task lighting and mood lighting in one stylish unit,” says Eve.

IXL Home's Fresco Aurora

Eve is a fan of fire pits too and particularly ones that double as a barbeque such as the Pit n Grill Deluxe from IXL.

Create an oasis
Create a lush tropical backyard retreat by getting your hands dirty in the garden. “Start by weeding, pruning, mulching and fertilising your existing plants and they will happily spring back to life. Then head down to your local nursery and pick up a few extra plants to fill in the gaps and make it feel lush,” says Eve who loves the flexibility of pots, planters and hanging plants. “By using moveable planting solutions you can easily bring the greenery up onto your deck, balcony or patio and change the overall feel of your space,” says Eve.

The Block 2018 room reveals: terrace week

I actually really enjoyed last night’s Block terrace reveals. They were a really mixed bag and the spaces themselves were very different too. No doubt there’ll be a lot of chatter about how they couldn’t be judged fairly because of this. Personally, Sara and Hayden’s was my favourite but the judges put them third, so what do I know?! Love to know who you rated! Here’s a recap from first to last place (and I definitely did agree on last place!)!

1st: NORM AND JESS
Score: 30/30

A room win at last! Full marks at that! Norm and Jess continually referred to themselves as the underdogs this week. But boy did they prove everyone wrong, scoring themselves their first win of the season! AND the cover of Domain!

The space came complete with architectural steel sculptural feature, concrete planters, a marble-topped BBQ, outdoor lounge, custom table, water feature – and even a faux grass area suitable for animals.

Clearly the judges were fans! “Wow, wow, wow, wow,” said Neale. Shaynna loved the dining table/hanging plant/pergola combo and said the details said luxury. Neale said everything said luxury! Shaynna said everywhere you turned there was another beautiful thing to look at. “If it feels this good on a cold wet day, can you imagine how good it’s going to feel on a good day?!” said Neale.

Shaynna’s only question was the placement of the sculpture and the seat. Neale thought they were deliberately trying to hide the seat! Darren loved the free space which he said could be the dancing zone! “When you’re out here you realise what a prime piece of Melbourne real estate this is,” said Neale. Darren was pretty much reaching for his chequebook!

I really didn’t like that bird screen and the pond was a bit of a child safety hazard, but overall, it was a great terrace, and I was happy to see them have a win. Not my fave though! And I wouldn’t have given it a perfect score myself.

My picks to buy: Raw Earth plant stand by Angus & Celeste and custom round dining table.

2nd: BIANCA AND CARLA
Score: 29/30

Bianca and Carla called on the services of Dave Franklin, Block garden designer extraordinaire, who delivered a stunning, sophisticated space, featuring a custom-made five-metre long table made from recycled timber, BBQ at the end, those 50 year-old Zycads – and a fireplace, which utilised the original chimney from the old Gatwick. But, arguably the hero was that skyline.

Darren said the view was spectacular and they all loved the fireplace and the huge table. Neale said it was classic, modern traditional and sexy all at once. The couch was badly placed though, out in the elements.

My picks to buy: Thermastrip outdoor heater and charcoal bar stools.

3rd: HAYDEN AND SARA
Score: 28.5/30

All three judges were unanimous in their praise, particularly Neale, who said he thought The Gatwick had never looked more elegant in its 80-year history. Keeping it super chic with a wraparound bar, they featured a sitting and dining area with custom outdoor kitchen, complete with concrete bench, green marble splashback, teppanyaki BBQ and twin tubular exhaust fans.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about,” said Darren. Neale said it was “hashtag enough” and Shaynna said it had wow factor. I’m so surprised they didn’t come first or second! This was my personal favourite.

“This is what I call selling the lifestyle,” said Neale. It was the most sophisticated and resolved he’d ever seen the couple and they’d saved the best for last. “This is exactly what the terrace needs to be in terms of luxury.” Darren said they’d really showed how you could live in the outdoor space in all weathers.

Neale said buyers would remember this terrace above everything else in their apartment.

My picks to buy: Velletri indoor outdoor dining table and Lepaar Harden hose.

4th: KERRIE AND SPENCE
Score: 25/30

Kerrie and Spence kept it cosy and comforting on their terrace, which featured an L-shaped white and timber lounge, light grey tiles, a dark grey table with eight stools (designed to match their piece inside), dark grey circular rug, a hanging chair and lots of greenery.

Neale said he thought it was really lovely and felt like a proper room. Shaynna said it was a casual version of the lounge room inside. Neale was surprised about the lack of barbecue (the quintessential Aussie accessory for a terrace or deck?). Darren thought it could have been easily incorporated. Shaynna loved the tiered planting and hanging sculpture they created in their challenge. Darren wondered if they’d done enough though. “You have so much expense in the kitchen. I love everything about it but the styling in it is really …” Shaynna thought the bar had been set so high inside, that outside let it down a bit. Darren liked the tile and fan choices. He said the space was full of life. “Kerrie and Spence should be really proud of the job they’ve done.”

My picks to buy: Alfresco bar table and nest of tables.

5th: HANS AND COURTNEY
Score: 23.5/30

As well as furnishing the area with plenty of green – think giant fiddle figs, Monsteras and palms – Hans and Courtney chose to dress their terrace with simple white and grey furniture with timber accents, a hanging chair and a large jute rug. They finished the space with a hero piece, a copper pot aged to showcase an oxidised light green. And let’s not forget the outdoor movie projector!

The judging didn’t go their way though, despite Darren being a fan. He thought it was fresh, light and bright and tropical. Shaynna however said it was boring as “bat”! She added she was sick of white walls. (Aren’t we all this season, Shaynna?!) She went one further to call it a white clinical box.

Neale didn’t agree with Darren either. He said it was Courtney and Hans at their worst, not understanding how to use the space, which wasn’t really an outdoor room. Darren defended them though, saying it was considered and the copper pot was a great statement piece. He thought it just needed a dining setting. Neale said it needed to be furnished differently because it was a good old fashioned sunroom, not a deck. Shaynna just got more and more annoyed, saying it was a missed opportunity.

I agree with the judges that this was the weakest room. Sara could learn a thing or two about gracious losing from Courtney though, eh?!

My picks to buy: Noosa hammock swing and Haiku black fan.
