Upcycled desk ideas: from drab to fab for under $100

By Naomi Findlay

We’ve probably never looked more closely at our desks and home offices than we are now.

Have you previously worked on the lounge, at the coffee table or maybe even the kitchen bench? Now you may find yourself in the position where you’re having to work from home on a more regular basis and suddenly your desk and storage has become a focus, as has how you feel when you are working.

At the same time, not everyone is in a position to go and splash out on a beautiful big new desk, so I have a challenge for you. I want you to look around you for a fixer-upper. It might be the desk you already have, maybe one on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, a roadside find or from an op shop like Vinnie’s. See if you can find a desk that is the perfect project for you.

BEFORE: This op shop find was pretty bland

Here’s my how-to so when you find that desk, you know exactly what to do and what you need. The desk pictured is one I recently did up for a client. I got it from a local Lifeline store for around $50 and took it from bland to sensational!

What you need

  • 1 litre of Porter’s Chalk Emulsion in French Slate
  • Small roller tray or roller pot
  • Small roller
  • Medium paintbrush
  • Sanding pad/sponge (flexible is good for the curved shapes)
  • A sharp edge
  • Baby wipes
  • Dry clean cloth
  • Screwdriver
  • New handles
  • Wax
  • Wax brush

How to do it

Remove the drawers

Remove the hardware

Clean any obvious dirt and high grease areas.

Use the sharp edge and baby wipes to get the old wax, grease and years of dirt out of the finer detail on the desk, this will allow for the new paint to sit right into the details rather than on top of the old gunk, making for a sharper and more refined final product.

Use the sanding sponge to give the whole desk a sand, making sure that you get right into the corners and the routed details. The flexible sanding sponge also makes sanding the round legs easier.

Use a clean dry paint brush to then dust all of the sanding dust out of the detailed areas and also the ornate rose area and drawers. You can also vacuum out the drawers if you have one handy.

Then wipe down with a clean and dry cloth to make sure you are ready for your first coat.

Apply the Porter’s Chalk Emulsion using a paintbrush for the detailed areas and then a roller over the top. This allows for a flawless finish.

Once the first coat has dried (approx 2 hours) do a very light sand and then apply a second coat.

Once the final coat is fully dry, get a fine grade sanding pad and very minimally distress the edges and the details on the desk.

Always stand back and reassess this as you go. Start super light!

Once you are happy with the level of distressing, use a tiny amount of antique black wax on the rose motif to give it some depth and definition. Finish it all off with a clear wax covering over the whole piece.

Finally, attach your new handles.

This was such a simple but amazing makeover. The desk was not an antique which meant that the drawers slid with a lot of clearance and hence I was able to paint the drawer side and also inside the drawers. This always looks better if it doesn’t affect the function of the drawers.

This really is simple and achievable for all levels of experience. All you need is some time (it is something you can do with the kids), some know-how (now you have it!) and the want to surround yourself in beauty, starting with your desk.

Pop Up Desks are a fast, easy & affordable solution

I’ve been so inspired, as I’m sure you have too, by the stories of local businesses pivoting to save themselves and their employees at this challenging time. And even better when that pivot offers a solution to new challenges the rest of us are facing, and for many that’s working and schooling from home. These clever new Pop Up Desks are the perfect example, and they look good too!

They’re the brainchild of DisplayWise, a market leader in the events and exhibitions space. “For almost 20 years we have built displays for some of Australia’s most well known brands, however recent events have obviously shattered our entire industry and led to most of our business opportunities evaporating overnight,” said group marketing director Lisa Cachia.

“As a team, we watched as doors around us continued to close. We put our heads together and thought what can we do, what can we make that is going to be useful and add value during these challenging times?

“Noting that many offshore supplies were limited, and with more and more people either working or studying from home, we realised that a range of high quality, locally manufactured desks would provide many Australians with a solution to their new home office needs.”

With skills in industrial design, a full manufacturing facility and a team of people ready and willing to work, they quickly set about turning the concept into a reality. In the space of a few days, they had designed, tested, produced and taken to market a range of desks. “We also created a new brand, Pop Up Desks, along with a suite of marketing materials including brochures and a new website.”

The Scandi-inspired desks not only look great, they are highly functional. Purposefully designed to be easy to assemble (from just six pieces), they can ‘pop up’ in a matter of minutes and require no screws. Knowing that many people lack space or a permanent office set-up, the desks can also ‘pop down’ and be stored flat when not required, even for the weekend!

From $179 and shipping Australia wide, they’re made of high quality MDF with a choice of laminate finishes and come in adult and junior size or a standing version. The range is growing every week as the brand responds to requests for different sizes and configurations.

“Most importantly, all of our products are designed and made in Australia, supporting local jobs in these unprecedented times,” Lisa says.

“As a business, great design is key to everything we do. Whether we are building a two-story exhibition stand, or a piece of home office furniture, we apply the same design principals and attention to detail in our work.  This innovative, unique design is testament to our drive to make products that not only look amazing but are of a high quality and are extremely functional.”

They’ve been thrilled with the response from customers and the media. “Businesses need to diversify and adapt to survive,” Lisa says. “Whether you are an alcohol manufacturer that has pivoted to produce much needed hand sanitiser, or a fine dining restaurant that now offers takeaway, those that are able to think outside the square will stand a much greater chance of succeeding.

“There have been so many examples of these businesses in the media in recent weeks, I think it’s testament to the Aussie spirit and our determination to stick together and get through this crisis.”

Jen’s home office reveal

Photography: Jacqui Turk

I’m excited to reveal my new home office; once a very dull and boxy little room, otherwise known as ‘bedroom 4’ on the floorplan! It did have a few great things going for it though: the best light in the house and a window and glass doors looking out onto the garden. Our house is very long and the office is right at the back, away from any noise and distraction.

It needed help though. And as this is a long term home, I really wanted to make an effort with this workspace and make it somewhere I really wanted to hang out and felt inspired and happy to work in. There’s nothing that transforms a small and featureless room more, in my opinion, than wallpaper. I’d wanted to use one of Anna Spiro’s designs for Porters Paints for years. Damian wasn’t sure about the pink so I compromised on the blue version. But when I found they were out of stock, I somehow managed to persuade him it was a good idea to revert to pink. At the end of the day, I’m the one who works from home so it’s really my domain. That and the fact the garage has been earmarked as his man cave and I’ll happily have nothing to do with what goes on in there!

Before the wallpaper, I’d already had a plantation shutter put on the window. Since these photos were taken I’ve also had sheer curtains put on the sliding door. They filter the light really well because the sun can sometimes be a bit too much and soften the room nicely.

I don’t need much furniture, being someone whose work is largely online and stored in the cloud. Laptop, printer, paper diary and a few notebooks and pens aside, I don’t need much physical stuff. Which keeps things tidy! I already had the two grey home office storage units from Pottery Barn. I love them because they’re grey and don’t look too corporate or officey. The one with the doors neatly hides the printer (never a good look!) and even if you don’t need storage, you’ve got to have somewhere to display pretty things, right?!

Speaking of pretty things, it was love at first sight for that cut glass lamp. Amazing. I’m still on the lookout for a more interesting shade to swap out for the white one it came with, just to mix things up a little. The rattan lampshade on the pendant light is the same one we’ve used in all the bedrooms. It’s a nice textured neutral.

The magazine rack is actually a bathroom ladder. I think I saw it used this way in a magazine and stole the idea, but I can’t remember which, sorry!

I’m having a major floral moment and these two prints by Kimmy Hogan (right) and Lamai Anne (left) seem to work well together and with the wallpaper.

It took a long time to work out where the desk should go (the doors make this room a tricky one to work with) but Damian finally cracked it and as soon as I realised the chair should be looking towards the door, that was it! I also have a thing about having my back to the door and not knowing who might creep up behind me, so this this works well! I imported that chair from Jonathan Adler years ago and while it is made of resin and thus super heavy and not ergonomically sound at all, I just love it so there. The desk itself is solid timber. I love its generous size, simplicity and the fact it has a small drawer where I store pens (not a fan of pen pots!).

The round blush pink rug helps balance the room a little as most of the action is happening at the far end.

This room is definitely polarising but I’m unapologetic! This is my space where I get work done and earn money so it’s important too. It doesn’t have to be everyone’s cup of tea! That said, I find most women love it and men just shudder and say the wallpaper would give them a headache! Each to their own!

It’s actually really fun and refreshing to have a room which can be so self indulgent (when you’re in a couple you do have to be at least a little conscious of your other half’s tastes!). And the fact that this room feels so good and is a pleasure to work in makes me happy every day. All in all, I’m glad I had the guts to go bold in this room.

The floors in here will be replaced with an oak laminate next month, and the sliding doors will eventually be replaced with French double doors.

Jen’s home office shopping spree at Supa Centa Moore Park

Sponsored by Supa Centa Moore Park

We live on the other side of Sydney from Moore Park so I’ll admit it had been a while since I’d visited the Supa Centa but, being abreast of all things interiors, I knew plenty of great new stores had opened there. So when they invited me to come shopping for home office supplies, I didn’t need asking twice. When you work from home like I do, the home office is really important! It’s also great when you get to choose the look and feel of this space and can avoid all things corporate (while still being mindful that sitting at the wrong furniture all day –however good-looking– can leave your back suffering!). Yup, I’m officially old!

The centre has a really nice, spacious layout and everything is well signposted, which always gets me off to a good start. There’s plenty of parking too, and places to buy coffee! I knew we (myself, husband Damian and toddler Sebastian) could safely be here for hours, and when I discovered a children’s play area, well, we couldn’t ask for more!

Top of my shopping list was a new desk. I already have an antique secretaire, which I’m keeping too, but I wanted something bigger, and better ergonomically. I browsed some nice options at BoConcept (they have one that attaches to the wall and pulls down, so great for small spaces), Shack and Icon By Design (all solid timber) before settling on the simple shape and beautiful beech of the Altar desk at Contents International Design. I am a long time fan of this shop, which stocks some of my favourite furniture and homewares brands. The visual merchandising in here is a real standout, so when I saw ‘my’ desk styled up in a gorgeous looking study nook, it definitely helped seal the deal! I just had to get out the door without buying one of everything! At $1,045 for a large desk in gorgeous solid timber with a drawer, it won over something similar I’d seen for $1,500 in another store.

My desk in store at Contents International Design

It’s worth mentioning that all the shops at the Supa Centa are really spacious which not only makes it feel lovely and open, but means getting around them with a pram, as I did, is no issue!

Onto the desk chair: a tricky purchase if ever there was one! As I was saying before, ergonomics are important if you spend a lot of time in your home office, but so many desk chairs are downright ugly and bulky. You’ll not find any black pleather in my house! As soon as I saw the Phoenix chair at Freedom though, I knew it was going to work well. It’s upholstered for a start, in a very inoffensive grey fabric which will go with everything. It’s slightly padded for comfort and, most importantly, it’s on wheels, height-adjustable and it swivels, so my back will be happy! As a bonus, it doesn’t have arms, so you can tuck it away under the desk. All this for $199, which I think is a real steal.

My desk set up at home with the chair and ottoman from Freedom
The beech timber is beautiful. Also pictured: boxes from Orson & Blake

While in Freedom, I couldn’t resist the glam new Palm Springs Ottoman so I quickly got to work thinking how I could justify this piece as a home office essential (come on, we’ve all done it!). I came up with the following: somewhere to put my feet up while reading documents (I know, I know!) and a spare seat for the rare occasions I’ll let my husband share the desk when he works from home. Purchase made!

Clearly a desk is not a purely functional piece and when you’re an interiors addict, there is always a styling or decorative opportunity to be had! I knew Orson & Blake was the perfect place to source some stunning trinkets and was not disappointed. These beautiful lidded boxes are perfect for keeping pens, paperclips and USB sticks, and the gold star is a paperweight. Obviously! The charming shop assistant, who had no idea who I was or that I was writing about the experience, was delightful and even gave me a discount!

Some of the accessories from Orson & Blake on my desk at home. How good is the star ‘paperweight’?!

In fact, I genuinely received great customer service everywhere at the Supa Centa, which was really refreshing and welcome, especially on a Saturday, when everyone can be super busy and a little frazzled.

Shopping at Supa Centa Moore Park

Some of my other favourite stores were Max Sparrow, King Living and Boori. Whatever your budget and whether you’re looking for furniture, homewares, manchester, flooring, window furnishings or outdoor furnishings, you can find it all under one roof at Supa Centa Moore Park!

I hope you like my new home office setup!

IKEA’s fabulous new desk will grow with your child

IKEA are masters at creating functional, adaptable pieces and their new PAHL series is no exception. Featuring a desk and shelving series, this range will see your family through from kindergarten to high school with its fabulous, flexible features.

Jen’s tips for a comfortable, functional workspace you’ll love

Sponsored by Officeworks

I’ve partnered with Officeworks to help Australians take control of their workspace as they embark on a new and exciting financial year. Here are my top 12 tips to mastering an organised and productive space…

Love Where You Work - Officeworks (7)

1. Choose the right chair Opt for a chair that can be adjusted to suit both the height of your desk and your body, such as the Hummingbird Baku Chair. If you’re in a space with rugs or carpet, a chair with wheels can be impractical so consider your flooring when selecting one!

2. Measure up To get the most out of your office area, ensure the style and size of your furniture suits the room. Corner desks work well in small spaces, whereas a wall to wall desk may be better suited to a larger or narrow room. Make the most of under desk space with storage options like mobile filing drawers and pedestals.

3. Give yourself space Maintain spatial awareness when setting up your desk space – you don’t want to be cramped up facing a wall day in day out. If possible, face a window that offers a long-distant view. This will give your eyes the opportunity to shift focus away from the screen, which is necessary at least every 30 minutes. You’ll find that this simple exercise will boost both your concentration and mood.

4. Kick it to the side A sideboard can be a fantastic storage option, while looking great. They also provide benchtop space for desk lamps or the perfect spot for a wireless printer. These act as great ‘work stations’ which encourage intermittent exercise.

5. Look after yourself It’s important to remember that exercise will increase both your mental and physical wellbeing at work, making you more productive and focused in the office. Stay stimulated by making a conscious effort to get up and move every half hour. A great way to monitor this is to wear a Fitbit Charge HR Activity Tracker.

6. Lighten up Have a variety of lighting sources available for your work space – we draw energy from our surroundings. A window offering natural light and fresh air is ideal however a desk lamp can be useful for task lighting, especially in the late afternoons or mornings (depending on which direction your window faces).

7. Less is more Choose multifunctional equipment such as an all-in-one wireless printer with scanning, faxing and copying capabilities. These devices will also allow you to easily print from computers, phones and tablets – wherever, whenever. Additionally, an all-in-one desktop computer with a built-in hard drive looks neat and frees up space under the desk.

8. Remove tangled cords Wireless tech will free up desk space, reduce messy cables and increase overall efficiency. Think cordless for your phone, keyboard, mouse – almost anything can be wireless these days!

9. Set the mood Know what sort of acoustic environment makes you most productive – are you more focused in total silence or thrive with music on? If no noise is your preference, invest in noise-cancelling headphones or if music keeps you motivated, a small set of wireless desktop speakers are perfect for the office.

10. Let the Mailman take care of it Keep on top of admin by ensuring an efficient mail system is in place. Setting up an incoming and outgoing tray will avoid small parcels being forgotten or lost – no one likes paying late fees! When it’s time to post the mail, take advantage of Officeworks’ new Mailman service. It allows you to buy labels online 24/7 and drop parcels off in your own time – no more long queues or rushing to meet business trading hours!

11. Manage for safe keeping Regardless of whether your paperwork is in hard or soft copy, it’s important that you’re filing and securing documents. Desktop filing is best kept within arm’s reach for current projects, however old files should be organised into labelled storage boxes and stacked away. The same approach should be applied to filing soft copies and regular back-ups are crucial. Digital files can be saved using a number of storage solutions such as USBs, portable hard drives or via Cloud.

12. Maintain a ‘to-do list’ Set up a white board in your office to create a visual and updateable to-do list. Alternatively, make the most of the calendar app on your smartphone or tablet, by linking it to your mailbox diary – enabling you to receive deadline reminders and on-the-go notifications.

Upcycling how-to: the chair and desk with wow factor

Sponsored by Feast Watson

This makeover by Simone Barter from Style.Life.Home is pretty special, is it not?! She created it for last year’s Feast Watson Re-Love campaign, which this year I am attempting (wish me luck!) and Simone is participating in again. We can’t show you our finished products just yet, so in the meantime find out how she made this beautiful desk and chair…

Simone Barter before and after grouped image

Products:

  • Feast Watson Timber Primer
  • Feast Watson Stain & Varnish Black Japan Satin
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Malay Grey Semi Gloss

Planning:

  1. Decide where the furniture item will be placed with the aim to make it work with the rest of the chosen space. In particular, this will affect the colour palette you choose.
  2. Choose a desk with a large framework to enable a large workspace. Look for smaller features such as stationery drawers for added utility. Chairs with details are great and make sure that it is also comfortable.
  3. Shop around and explore old and loved stores, you never know what you might find or what bargain you could stumble across.

Simone Barter (3)

Preparation:

  1. Choose colours that will add a wow factor. I chose Feast Watson Black Japan, Malay Grey and Pop of Tango from the Dulux range for a dramatic effect.
  2. Prepare the wood by sanding back the old varnish using coarse sand paper.
  3. Use finer sandpaper to smooth the timber in preparation for the paint and stain.
  4. Make sure all dust is removed prior to coating the furniture.

Achieving your vision:

  1. Apply the Feast Watson timber primer and allow to dry.
  2. For the desk, make sure you remove all drawers before applying the first layer of Feast Watson Black Japan Stain & Varnish. Build up coats to desired colour. Allow to dry between coats.
  3. For the chair apply the Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss then allow to dry.
  4. Use painters tape approximately 10cm from the bottom of each chair leg, evenly wrapped all the way around each leg. Then paint the bottom section of each chair leg. Remove the painters tape when the paint is completely dry.

Simone Barter (5)

“It all starts with the search,” says Simone Barter. “Shopping in some of my favourite little re-loved stores and finding pieces to re-create.”

NB: Always test colours and stains on an off-cut or inconspicuous area of your piece prior to coating the whole item to ensure you’re happy with the colour.

Top interior stylist Steve Cordony shares his new home office

Switching from full-time interior design editor for Belle magazine to freelance stylist a year ago, Steve Cordony found himself working from home. Having recently purchased the apartment he had rented for years, it was the perfect opportunity to renovate and decorate the perfect creative space! And of course, it is as stylish and beautiful as you’d expect.

stevecordony-2

“The flexibility of working on different projects and collaborating with different clients was the most exciting part about going freelance,” Steve says. “I had been freelance prior to being Belle’s interior design editor and being a creative and unable to sit still for more than five minutes, freelance-land suits my frenetic nature!”

stevecordony-extra

He’s not had much chance to sit still, working on interiors for Mirvac’s new Bondi and Green Square projects, styling for Belle as their style director at-large and working with Myer, Sheridan and advertising clients as well as styling some spectacular events for clients including Sephora, Stoneleigh and L’Oreal. “I have also been working with Waterford as a style contributor and most excitingly, I am working on a couple of product ranges as we speak with some great companies.” We can’t wait to see them!

Now based out of home in Sydney, Steve’s office space is very important to him as he spends so much time there. “I had to make it a space that had a great feel to it with good light. Luckily, we were renovating the rest of the home around the same time so I was able to design the space as a whole and it was much easier logistically with trades etc. I know there’ll come a point soon where I will have to move to a bigger office space, but I’m staying at home for as long as I can!”

stevecordony-6

[contextly_sidebar id=”aLzFVvScwv2EnjFaXccsgs9XfnU7ZBeS”]After renting the space for 3.5 years, when the opportunity to buy it came up, it was a dream come true, especially as Steve had already redesigned the space in his head countless times over! “It was such a blessing not having to move!” He wanted the office space to feel like another room in the home, not even vaguely corporate. “The French panelling and sisal carpet are throughout the rest of the apartment. I am lucky there is great built-in storage so all the boring stuff is hidden and I basically have my double-sided desk and the bar cart from Bowerhouse to ‘style’!”

Not surprisingly, the wallpaper was his the starting point. “Weirdly, it gives the room such a sense of calm and I feel like I’m working in a jungle. It was actually (partner) Michael’s idea as he has loved it ever since we saw it in LA. It’s bold, but also classic at the same time — which sounds odd, but I think it’s because it’s such an iconic print that I hopefully won’t get over in years to come!”

stevecordony-5

The Oluce ‘Atollo’ lamp from Euroluce was last year’s birthday present. “I had coveted this piece ever since I used it in my first assignment while studying at Enmore. Every home has to have a Ficus Lyrata (mine’s from Garden Life) and this adds to the ‘jungle fever’. The re-worked antique art deco desk is from MCM House and I have one ergonomic Herman Miller Aeron chair from Living Edge and one not so ergonomic Gebrüder Thonet 210R chair! I constantly change the accessories and books and have fresh flowers and candles burning 24/7.”

stevecordony-3

stevecordony-7

Aesthetics aside, what else does Steve think is important about a home office from a practical perspective? “Storage! It’s the most important aspect. My desk and the space itself look styled and together but behind the great wall of doors is a whole world of pain! Ok it’s not that bad, but I have drawers filled with fabric samples, kikki.K boxes with documents and shelving for samples and catalogues. And definitely good lighting. In terms of comfort, I’m so glad I invested in the Aeron desk chair as I spend so much time on it! And music — my Sonos system is my friend as I would go crazy working most days by myself in silence!”

So, being one of Australia’s top stylists, does partner Michael have much say in the interiors of their home? “We have a rule where Michael looks after the terrace/outside and I am in charge of the interior. But let’s just say that rule is sometimes blurred, mainly from me being a control freak! But I did let him choose the wallpaper after all…”

Steve adds: “I would describe our home style as modern luxe. I like having contemporary and ‘designy’ pieces but most importantly, I want it to have a soul. I love incorporating items from our travels and I am always moving things around from week to week to constantly keep it interesting.”

Steve’s tips for creating a home office space you actually want to spend time in

  • Don’t think of the space as an office. Think of it as another beautiful room in the home.
  • Create a mood board using any interior shots or styles you love and work from there.
  • Storage is the most important but it doesn’t have to be the ugly elephant in the room. If you don’t have built-in storage, invest in some functional storage that looks great which you can style and incorporate into the space.

Jen & Olivia’s Officeworks desk makeover

Brought to you by Officeworks

This is an interiors blog so when we hear the word makeover, we think: make something look nicer. So when Officeworks set us a makeover challenge for a workspace, what it would look like (colour scheme etc) were top of mind. That said, the neat freak in me knows that one of the keys to a tidy and good looking room is having a place for everything and everything in its place. So with this in mind, as I’m currently overseas in Europe, editorial assistant Olivia Shead (in Sydney) and I approached this as a team effort!

What better excuse than a new financial year to give your workspace a fresh new look and a declutter and organise? It’s like back when you were at school and you bought a new pencil case and notebook and vowed to only write it in your very best handwriting. And while even the prettiest desks will probably end up drowning in bits of paper eventually, it feels good to start with the best intentions!

For me personally, this time of year means scrabbling around for tax and super-related paperwork and wishing I had been more organised for the past 12 months. And being self-employed brings with it more responsibility for your own paperwork, like it or not! As well as keeping just about everything else together. There is no office cleaner (oh yeah, that’s me!) or in-house accountant.

I scoured the Officeworks website for pretty yet practical items to create a tidy, functional and good looking desk set up and Olivia set it up in her home workspace. Let’s face it, if you’re lucky enough (in our opinion) to work from home, being able to choose the less corporate items is a major bonus. While in my life as an employee and manager I often visited my local Officeworks to buy essentials, my boss would definitely have frowned if I’d returned with everything in hot pink. Well, now I’m my own boss, looky what happened!

I decided on a stylish scheme of hot pink and aqua with some white to stop it getting out of control. I already knew about the brand’s Philosophy range which is always full of on-trend stationery and desk items, but was delighted to discover the Martha Stewart range too. Who knew?! Officeworks are full of surprises. Their new furniture range contains some good looking, affordable finds such as the Kirby Heartwood Desk (very Scandinavian, no?) for just $163, and the retro-style Hummingbird Evoque Slide Out Desk for $167.

What we bought:

(*The cat is the journalist’s own).

While our makeover was very stationery, desk and fashion-focused, Officeworks has everything you need for a home office, whether it’s a corner of a student’s bedroom or something altogether larger and more functional. Need a new laptop, printer, laminator or whiteboard? Tick, tick, tick, tick! All of this and more is available at Officeworks, alongside their many services, such as printing, easy parcel delivery (saving you from queuing at the post office) and access to tech support. If you’re working from home we assume you don’t have the luxury of a meeting room for clients. Did you know many Officeworks stores offer this too? I had no idea!

If you like a bright and cheerful desk like ours, check out this video with tips on how to add colour to your workspace:

Of course, you want to see the less pretty before photo too, don’t you? Here you go…

Jen’s picks for a gorgeous home office

One of the benefits of working from home is getting to choose all of the pretty things for your desk nook/home office. While us self employed miss out on free coffee and filtered water, office birthday gifts and the odd lunch on the boss, I think we more than make up for it in other respects! Here are a few gorgeous things you might like to brighten up your workspace (at home or otherwise). You can find them all (and more) in my Great.ly boutique.home office

I’ve been missing my own home office space (below) while we’ve been travelling. I’m looking forward to getting settled into a new home in Sydney later this year!

The cot that turns into a toddler bed, and later, a desk!

The innovative, Italian designed and made AVA — a cot, junior bed and desk all in one — is one product that will defintiely evolve with your family.

Z4_Cot_003

While there are many cots on the market with converter kits that you can buy as your child grows, the Ava cot from Plyroom is the first product in Australia that converts from a beautifully designed cot into a bed without the need for additional components, as well as later converting into a desk!

With an intelligent design, and using the eponymous European birch plywood, Plyroom and Totem Italia have collaborated to create something special for parents wanting maximum practicality coupled with a stunning design. Totem Italia’s designs push the boundaries of what one product can do. “Working with Totem Italia has been an exciting journey. We worked closely with an independent testing agency here in Australia to ensure the product adheres to all mandatory cot safety requirements in Australia and New Zealand. Whilst safety was our first priority, we needed to ensure it also retained the design simplicity synonymous with Totem Italia products,” says Plyroom founder, Elise Heslop.

Like all Plyroom products, the Ava cot is proudly designed and made in Italy and finished by hand. Using Totem Italia’s signature precision cut joinery with a unique interlocking system, means that all parts are held in place by solid wooden pegs and dowels. Ava requires no metal joins which ensures maximum product strength and integrity. The cot is flat-packed and the assembly process is surprisingly simple; no infamous allen keys or drills are necessary for assembly — the only tool needed to assemble this product is an old-fashioned hammer.

Made of FSC certified European birch ply and non-toxic water based finishes, the Ava cot features an adjustable mattress height for newborns and older babies. The organically shaped peepholes in the sides of the cot reflect the natural curves of nature and balance baby being able to see out whilst feeling secure.

Always passionate about sustainable and smart design, Totem Italia has designed this product so that the cot turns into a toddler bed without the additional expense or pieces of a conversion kit. “The cot also fits a standard size found in Australia, so mums and dads won’t have to search for a special-sized mattress or sheets and can take advantage of all the beautiful children’s cot bedlinen now available in Australia,” Elise adds.

The Ava offers a comfortable height for parents putting little ones down whilst also being low to the ground. The height of the junior bed is perfect for children as they transition from cot to bed as being close to the floor helps them feel safe. “The junior bed with safe and easy access also doubles as a reading couch and a place for quiet play,” she adds.

Ava can be a cherished piece beyond toddler years with its ingenious conversion to a desk with a clean, elegant, modern design. “The mattress base has round holes for proper ventilation of the cot and bed mattress but what’s fabulous about this is that these openings double up as glass or cup holders and are a great way to thread laptop cords neatly when Ava converts into a desk.”

Ava costs $1,750. Buy online.

Country Road’s new desk accessories are gold

One of the many benefits of working from home, is having your pick of pretty desk accessories rather than the standard corporate and practical choices. There’s definitely nothing dull about Country Road’s gorgeous new homewares in this department.

country road desk

When I previewed them some months back, your reaction on Instagram suggested you loved them as much as I did, especially the gold items (if you’re taking any of these babies into a shared office, you may want to make sure you write your name on them somewhere). The good news is, it’s all now available to buy in store and online.

My favourites are the gold Dakota scissors ($14.99), Kala pen holder ($39.95) Kala letter stand ($49.95) and Mio brass paperweight ($24.95). The perspex choices are also great, practical, and will go with anything.
