Nostalgic read: A new illustrated story book for interiors-lovers

While 2020 has been a very challenging year for many, there have been some silver linings. When freelance work dried up, writer Bianca Tzatzagos was faced with a new COVID-19 reality which meant she had a lot more time on her hands. Using the time she would typically have spent socialising or travelling, Bianca paired up with fellow house-obsessed creative, and illustrator, Inga Campbell to produce Olive and the Larder, a gorgeous limited-edition all-ages story book with a strong interiors bent.

“The book was a fun distraction for me during a time when simple joys like gathering friends together, readily accessing abundant groceries or an afternoon at the movies suddenly equalled big risk. Olive and the Larder reflects my momentary nostalgia for all those lovely, easy things,” says Bianca. Meanwhile, some of Inga’s favourite work is doing custom illustrations of people’s homes for them, so creating a fictional one for Olive was a dream.

Olive's house
Olive’s house

Designed and made in Australia, and with a limited print-run, the book centres around the fictional character of Olive and was inspired by Bianca’s own rather lovely larder. “My walk-in pantry at home is my magical place. I was inspired to create that room by all the story books I grew up on – warm, cosy, happily cluttered, English-inspired kitchens that are the heart of the home.”

Bianca's pantry
Bianca’s pantry

Dripping with nostalgia, the book’s themes and illustrations were inspired by Beatrix Potter and Brambly Hedge; both beloved classics that Bianca read throughout her childhood. “I don’t have kids at home, but I find myself buying beautiful storybooks purely for their design and artistic appeal, and certainly I’ve treasured all the wonderful books that I’ve been given as a child. Great books shape our aesthetic sensibilities early and forever,” says Bianca.

Olive's larder

Something of an updated version of the aforementioned heirloom books, Bianca has paired a modern tale with Inga’s nostalgic illustrations to create a world that is not found in your standard storybook. “I believe that beautiful storybooks enrich all of us, design-wise – from the tiny kids who are gifted them to the grown-ups who get to shop for them and read them at bedtime,” says Bianca.

And with a limited-edition print run, this book has arrived just in time for the festive season. “With only a few hundred copies crafted, it’s the antithesis of mass-market, and it makes a sweet Christmas gift.”

To celebrate the launch, Bianca has collaborated with Rotterdam based Miko Design who has has created a virtual Olive and the Larder shop in miniature. Simply jump onto Instagram where you can tap through the ‘shop’ to purchase an array of lovely Olive themed full sized products.

Foodie Friday: Valentine’s Day sugar cookies

Instead of spending a small fortune on flowers or store-bought chocolates this Valentine’s Day – or skipping the occasion completely – why not bestow the gift of homemade treats on your loved ones? Williams-Sonoma has the most wonderful collection of Valentine’s themed baking tools and accessories, which you’ll use year after year, and not only in February.

These sweetly styled cookies needn’t be reserved for romantic love, either. Share them with the kids, your friends, neighbours and colleagues. Everyone will love the sentiment, and nothing tastes better than home-baked biscuits!

How’s that for the Valentine’s gift that keeps giving?

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup (155 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (125 g) caster sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 3/4 cup (280 g) plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Royal icing for decorating (recipe below), optional

Method

Preheat the oven to 200C. Have ready 2 ungreased baking trays.

In a food processor or electric mixer, combine the butter and sugar and pulse until creamy. Add the egg and pulse until fluffy and blended. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add one-third of the flour mixture to the food processor and process until blended, about 45 seconds. Add the remaining flour in two batches, processing after each addition until the dough is smooth.

Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface, shape into a ball, and then roll out to about 5mm thick. (A good tip here is to cover your work bench with baking paper or parchment before flouring to help lift the rolled cookies onto trays. It will also make clean-up easier.)

Using your chosen cookie cutters, cut the dough into desired shapes. Then, using a spatula, transfer the cookies to the baking trays. Gather up the dough scraps, form into a ball, roll out and cut more shapes, and add to the baking trays.

Bake until lightly browned on the bottom and pale golden on top, 6-8 minutes. Transfer to wire racks and let cool on the baking trays for 5 minutes, and then transfer to the racks to cool completely.

Decorate the cooled cookies with royal icing. Makes about 36 cookies.

Royal Icing

Ingredients

  • 2 large egg whites
  • 500 g icing sugar, or more if needed
  • 1 tsp water or lemon juice, if needed
  • Food colouring (optional)

Method

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat together the eggwhites and 500g icing sugar until stiff enough to spread, about 10 minutes. If the icing is too stiff, beat in 1 teaspoon water or lemon juice. If it is too thin, continue beating for 2-3 minutes longer, or beat in another 1/4 cup (30 g) icing sugar. Use immediately before the icing starts to thicken. Royal icing will dry hard on cookies. Makes 1 cup.

To make different coloured icings, divide the icing among several bowls and add food colouring as desired. (Start with just a drop of food colouring, mix it in, check the colour and add more, drop by drop, until you reach your desired shade. A single drop can go a long way.) Using a knife or spatula, spread the icing on cookies. Alternatively, use a piping bag to highlight the details of stamped cookies. You could also decorate with sprinkles and sanding sugar before the icing dries.

Jen’s Christmas gift picks from west elm, Pottery Barn & more

Sponsored by Williams Sonoma Australia

You know who does Christmas well? Americans, that’s who! Having grown up in the UK, Christmas for me is all about roaring fires, mulled wine, huge roast dinners and plenty of baked goods. Here in Australia, while many people’s Christmas is more about the beach, great weather and seafood, I know plenty of us can’t resist the charm of a more traditional white Christmas vibe. Step into the US mega brands Pottery Barn, west elm, Williams Sonoma or Pottery Barn Kids right now and you’re sure to get your fix!

On top of that, the four stores are brilliant places to pick up Christmas gifts. So I’ve curated my favourites from each brand for you.

WEST ELM

Metallic + Pastel Glass Candle Holders, from $16

Combining this year’s trends for pastels and metallics, these would make a gorgeous gift! Great price point too.

metallic-pastel-glass-candleholders-d3998-alt2_imgz

Crewel Diamond Linework Cushion, $54

west elm do cushions SO well in my opinion and most of you readers would agree you can never have too many! I’m coveting this one and its monochrome palette makes it a safe bet to buy for someone else. As if you needed more reasons to love it, this cushion is made by hand in India and 100% cotton. I feel a gift-to-self coming on…

Cafe Scented Candle — Honey and Tobacco, $22

Trust me when I tell you this candle smells DIVINE. In fact, I’d go as far as to say this is my favourite candle discovery of 2016; on high rotation at my place. The packaging’s fab too. It would look gorgeous in anyone’s home.

Seriously, what guy (or gal!) wouldn’t love this? It’s also available in gold.

copper-bar-flask-zWaffle Weave Resort Robe, $159

An oldie but a goodie, you can’t go wrong with a luxurious white waffle robe for that spa feel at home. You can even opt to get this monogrammed for your loved one in store (but not online).

Luna Brushed Gold Cutlery Set, $69

I’d certainly be your new best friend if you bought me this gorgeous gold cutlery this Christmas! Perfect for entertaining or a bit of everyday luxury!

WILLIAMS SONOMA

The Original Peppermint Bark $42

Seriously, they need to make this stuff all year round, but then I guess it wouldn’t be such a festive treat. Creamy chocolate, white chocolate, peppermint oil and smashed up candy canes. What’s not to like, people? This stuff is so Christmassy and so moreish! The beautiful tin makes it perfect for gifting. You could even get away with skipping the gift wrap. There’s actually a whole Peppermint Bark range these days, with genius creations like Peppermint Bark Pretzels. Does it get more American or more festive?!

Cosy Cocktail Mixer, Mulled Pear $24

I once, innocently, asked my friend in the UK to Airmail me some mulled wine spice mix for Christmas. It did not end well. Customs didn’t like it for whatever reason! Another time, my in laws’ Christmas guests looked at me like I was a crazy lady for serving them hot mulled wine on a 30-plus day! I think this cosy cocktail mixer would go down well with the Aussies this Christmas though!

Nordic Ware Small Anniversary Bundt Cake Pan, $40

Buying for a baker? Who could resist this beautiful cake tin? Not only will it help you create seriously impressive looking cakes without all the effort (a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing and you’re away!), it would also looking stunning hanging on a kitchen wall or displayed on open shelving. Gorgeous in gold! This is a smaller version of the original Nordic Ware bundt cake pan introduced in the mid 20th Century. Round out this gift with a packet of Bundt Cake Mix.

POTTERY BARN KIDS

Anywhere Chair, from $114 complete with cover. Monogramming available in store for an extra cost

The bestselling Anywhere Chair is a winner for kids. We bought Seb one for his first birthday and he loves it. Not only is it sturdier than some of the cheaper ones out there on the market, it also looks so much more stylish in your lounge room and you won’t want to hide it away! As an added bonus the cover is machine washable and you can buy a spare cover too (there’s a variety of colours and patterns to choose from) if your child, for example, tends to cover his in Weetbix kisses and touch it with yoghurt hands…

Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch & Max sheet set, $109

You’ve heard the concept of new PJs for Christmas, now what about new sheets?! I absolutely love these festive Grinch sheets! One flat and one fitted sheet and a pillowcase included.

Madeline Play Vanity, $399

What little girl wouldn’t love this pint-sized dressing table? So gorgeous! The extremely high quality will hopefully help you justify the price tag of this investment piece which could one day become a family heirloom! Tuffet stool ($109) sold separately.

New Star Wars

The Pottery Barn Kids Star Wars range has always been amazing and the latest pieces don’t disappoint! I’m loving the Play Chairs ($179) in Darth Vader or R2-D2 and the Decorative Cushions ($59).

Take 5 with our very own Jen Bishop

Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best advice they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Jen Bishop, publisher and editor of Interiors Addict and Reno Addict.

Jen (58 of 111)-processed

1. What is your favourite cafe?

I love The Boatshed at Balmoral, which is my favourite Sydney beach. The food and coffee are always great and the location and styling are gorgeous!

2. What is your favourite holiday destination?

It’s way too hard to pick just one so I’ll cheat! The most interesting and awe-inspiring place I’ve ever been is Luxor in Egypt, probably my favourite ever city is Paris (I first went when I was 18, my first trip overseas without parents, fell in love with it and couldn’t stop returning) and I’ll never ever get sick of New York.

3. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

For my last birthday, my husband brought my best friend over from the UK as a surprise. Having just had baby Seb a couple of months before, it was amazing to share this special time with her in Sydney.

4. What is your favourite book?

(OK, so I’m not good at picking just one thing!). From a business perspective, I got a lot out of Thrive by Ariana Huffington and The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. My favourite childhood books are The Railway Children, The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland. And as an adult, some of my favourite novels include The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice and The Picture of Dorian Gray (I’m a sucker for the classics!).

5. What is your favourite piece of furniture you own?

I just love my vintage marble-topped coffee table which was a bargain eBay find. Sadly it is a complete death/serious injury trap for kids so I’ve had to move it out of the living room now I’m a mum!

Stylist Erin Michael creates birth announcement app

When stylist Erin Michael wanted to announce her baby, Jagger, to the world, she didn’t send the usual SMS or personalised photo card, she created this super cool birth announcement.

Jagger Original BA

It went viral, was pinned all over town and much imitated. Now clever Erin has seen the potential to turn her idea into an app and I think it’s genius!

It is so simple and easy to use. Rather than recreate your own photoshoot (as someone who recently gave birth, I can say that would definitely be at the bottom of my priority list!), you can introduce your baby in style to your friends and family virtually the minute they are born with Birth Announcement App.

Template3

All you need to do is choose a template, enter the baby’s birth details, take a photo or use one from your camera roll et voila, you are ready to share the exciting news of your baby in a unique and stylish way. Share instantly on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, send an SMS, email, or save to camera roll to print later. Erin, who was a contestant on The Block in 2010, printed her birth announcement photo and wrote thank you messages on the back of them to her loved ones.

App screenshot1

“No newborn? Don’t worry, you are not missing out! You can retrospectively upload any photo from your camera roll and enter the birth details of your older children. Or maybe create one to pop in a frame as a gift for a friend who has just had a baby. They are also great for photo memory books, so you have a cute little reminder of all the important details to cherish forever,” Erin says.

App screenshot3

Birth Announcement app is available to download free from the Apple App store, with in-app purchases. One gender neutral template based on the original is free to use and other templates cost $4.99 each.

An Android version (yay!) and many more templates are planned for the coming months.

What do you think? I think this is going to go OFF! Download for free.

I pimped my MacBook Air and made it marble!

You know when you discover something really cool there’s the temptation to selfishly keep it to yourself so nobody else can get one and you can be really exclusive? Well, I thought about it, but I’m a chronic over sharer so here we go….

White_3.0_Final_1024x1024_72cb26b4-8891-43b5-84ec-b38634373486

How damn cool is this marble-look MacBook skin?! I KNOW! I totally pimped my Air. Everyone who has seen it has LOVED it and I’ve already bought one as a gift for one of my besties.

I discovered it on Instagram and had to have one. It arrived from Canada in little over a week and I am so in love with it. Super easy to apply (it’s just a big sticker), fits perfectly and looks great.

IMG_1461

It’s $24.99 with $8 international shipping from Canada. Yes, that’s one expensive sticker but don’t over think it, it looks amazing! It’s available in all MacBook Pro and Air sizes.

You’re welcome.

Retro style station signs for your wall by Johnny Spiller

Whether they’re a signage, retro, travel, transport or typography fan, these hand painted train station sign artworks would make a great, personalised Christmas gift for someone and there’s still just time to get your order in.

ERSKINEVILLE shelf_2JPG

Artist Johnny Spiller’s idea stemmed from a drawing he did looking across the platforms of Sydney’s Central Station and passing the signs there every day for five years.

Johnny's drawing
Johnny’s drawing

“I really wanted to make a replica CENTRAL sign for my wall at home. Once I did, I knew how striking and unique it looked, and how cool it would be to let people customise them with a destination close to their heart – station or no station! I showed a few people and they loved the idea. The bold monochrome look also fits well with the black and white theme of my drawings and works with any decor.”

STATION SIGN_2

Johnny knew he wanted his signs to be high quality and command attention. Each one is handmade in his Sydney studio with the signs and letters individually painted so they look just like the originals that inspired him. “It’s time consuming as each laser cut letter needs to be primed and carefully finished,” he says. “There is also a great deal of care in selecting the letter height for optimum spacing on the sign, and the hardest part – making sure the letters are fixed straight on the final sign!”

Each sign comes packed into a sturdy, hand-branded box for safe delivery. They can be hung on the wall or displayed free-standing on furniture or a shelf.

STATION_SIGN_ERKO_1

If you’re looking for a special Christmas, wedding, birthday or housewarming gift, look no further. You saw them first on Interiors Addict!

Large signs are 210mm high x 980mm long ($349) and the small signs ($159) are 140mm high x 640mm long.

What to give someone who has everything? Nothing!

By Caitlin Davis

Because, somewhere out there, is a little green tree. On that green tree is a little golden star. On that golden star it is written, “Female, Aged 17”.

tag

That was my tag. Once I got over the incredible shock, the wholehearted pity and the overwhelming feeling of “I’m one of those children”, I felt immense gratitude and compassion. I received a $40 voucher with a bath and body gift set and I felt on top of the world walking into the department store to buy a brand new pair of jeans with an abundant “just stepped off the resort” smell of fresh coconut. I hand washed my new jeans for months as if they were Gucci and boy, did I ration out that body lotion! At 17, I was old enough to not believe in Santa…but he truly visited that year.

So how can you make a difference? Here are my top local gifting destinations.

1) Your local family and children’s services office, outreach centre, church group or crisis accommodation desk.

If you contact your local council, they will be able to help you find your local crisis centres and family and child service offices who are in need of donations or gifts. These are often the most in need as they do not advertise and do not have the pull that other retail giants have. Often, there will be a donation box at reception.

2) Department stores

The Kmart Wishing Tree, partnered with the Salvation Army, has a long and loyal reputation for Christmas gift giving. Just pick up a tag, hunt down the present, wrap or leave unwrapped and attach the tag to the present for placement under the tree.

Target has teamed up with Uniting Care Australia this year with the Target Giving Box. The same principles apply here as Kmart. Uniting care also accept unwrapped gifts at local offices. (http://www.givingbox.com.au/)

3) Online local charities

Purchase a gift online from Simply Giving and they will deliver it to your charity of choice! Twenty charities to choose from.

4) My Cause

This website is dedicated to helping anyone in need of anything and the donations are directly linked with no middle man. You can randomly select a cause from helping to pay for cancer treatments to emergency funds for widows and their families or even school tuition. The campaigns are heartbreakingly endless.

So don’t buy something useless for someone who has everything. Instead, buy something for someone who has nothing. It will make a much bigger difference in their lives and you can give the “has-it-all” person a nice card that reads, “I compassionately gave your present to…”

Gift guide: luxe treats for the bath lover

While nobody loves baths as much as I do, and Aussies are certainly more into their showers, I know there are a few dedicated tub fans out there and, perhaps a little selfishly, I’ve pulled together a few gift ideas for them! I’m a big believer in turning your bathroom into a little home sanctuary and that can be achieved with some clever styling and a few luxury products.

interiorsaddict bath gifts

Clockwise from top left:

  • I’m a massive Jo Malone fan and their fragrances aren’t cheap. But if you’d like to give someone a little everyday luxe at an affordable price point, treat them to a soap for $30. My favourite’s Pomegranate Noir. I love using my soap every day and it’s lasting me ages.
  • I need one of these bath caddies in my life for my book, candle and cuppa while enjoying a soak! This one’s made of cedar which is amazingly resilient. It resists mould and mildew with no need for oiling or staining and it releases a lovely smell when wet. At $79, I think it’s great value.
  • If you want to impress someone with bath/shower gel that looks amazing left out on the side (perhaps in the cedar bath caddy?) but also smells amazing and does the job, you can’t go past Aesop. Body cleanser from $25 in various fragrances.

You still have plenty of time to shop online, so what are you waiting for?! If you have a very special bath lover in your life, why not buy them all four?! (If you’re reading, Damian…)

14 gifts for mum: a $25 bunch of flowers including delivery!

Today on Interiors Addict, I’m starting 14 Gifts for Mum: two weeks of a gift idea a day for your mum in the lead up to Mother’s Day.  Don’t buy something mediocre at the last minute, when you still have plenty of time to buy something lovely that she’ll treasure! All gifts are under $100 and available online.

It’s usually an expensive business sending flowers, but if you’re in Sydney, that’s all changing thanks to startup business Little Flowers. They will deliver a bunch of seasonal flowers, fresh from that morning’s flower market, for just $25. I know, that cheap! I’ve used them twice and the recipients have been delighted both times.

little flowers

You can’t choose which flowers, as it depends what’s looking lovely and in season at the market that morning. But is there such thing as a bad flower (apart from a gerbera)?! And they don’t deliver on weekends or public holidays BUT they’re making an exception for Mother’s Day. Also, delivery is currently only in Sydney city and eastern suburbs. And when they run out, they run out. They even text you to let you know when your bunch has been delivered. That’s service!
