The Interiors Addict bedroom makeover competition with Heatherly Design

Are you dreaming of a grown up bedroom like the gorgeous boudoirs we all drool over in the magazines? Would you like to leave your bedroom door ajar (with pride) when friends drop by unexpectedly? Then we have the competition for you this week.

Georgie Leckey from Heatherly Design has been creating to-die-for upholstered bedheads since 2007 from her home in regional Victoria. The bedheads are then produced in Melbourne, making them 100% Australian designed and made.

You might recognise some of Georgie’s designs from the last two seasons of The Block. They were featured in bedrooms by Amie and Katrina, Josh and Jenna and Dan and Dani to namedrop a few. They’re also in the current issue of Real Living.

You’re invited to Andrew O’Brien’s first Sydney exhibition at Corporate Culture

Andrew O’Brien is on a mission to change the way people think about art as he puts the finishing touches to the work for his first Sydney solo exhibition at Corporate Culture. He gave Interiors Addict an exclusive behind the scenes glimpse and talked about his work and attitude to art.

In the last couple of months, Andrew’s work has appeared on the front cover of Real Living and on The Block. The awareness this has created has been really valuable but it’s a more mainstream approach than many artists would take. “I know this sounds very basic, but I have always found that people want to engage with art,” says Andrew. “Sometimes this engagement is on different levels, but more often than not it is about giving people the ability to take the first step in understanding the importance of art. In terms of The Block, Julian Cress, the executive producer, is very supportive of the visual arts, so in context of that environment I made the time to work with the contestants to help them create a space to display art in an appropriate way. This was very successful for the show and I believe added significantly to the overall quality of not only the program, but the actual houses themselves.”

Darren Palmer & Stacey Kouros front competition to win a $10,000 room makeover

Launching today, Carpet Court’s Love the Look is a competition giving Aussies with a keen eye for interior style the chance to win a $10,000 room makeover in their home.

Carpet Court and its ambassadors Darren Palmer and Stacey Kouros, who both shot to fame on reality TV show homeMADE, are calling on interior design enthusiasts throughout Australia to share their style inspirations through a series of six weekly Facebook tasks.

The tasks will be simple. Darren and Stacey will be asking entrants to share images that have inspired the looks in their homes. It may be a holiday snap that has inspired an outdoor space, or a photograph of a statement piece that has been passed down through generations. They’ll be showcasing their different styles, and asking entrants to pick ‘Team Darren’ or ‘Team Stacey’ with each entry.

There are 12 weekly prizes to be won including Vera Wang Wedgewood china, digital cameras from Canon, and outdoor furnishings and designer rugs from Carpet Court.  The grand prize includes a $10,000 styling budget from Carpet Court and styling advice from either Darren or Stacey (depending on which team the chosen winner has picked).

New TV show will pay to renovate your home

A new show on one of the major networks (which I can’t tell you or I’d have to kill you) is looking for people who own their home but don’t have the cash to renovate it and need a helping hand.

“We’re looking for people who own a home that’s in dire need of renovation (essentially a renovator’s delight) who also have the desire to roll their sleeves up and do the renovating themselves,” said a spokesperson. “If they get selected for the show, we’ll cover the renovation costs and there’s a big cash prize up for grabs. We’re not looking for experts – just vibrant personalities with a little know-how and a strong idea on how they want their dream home.”

What’s not to like?!

Interiors Addict (finally) meets Shaynna Blaze!

Shaynna Blaze and I have been chatting on Twitter since before I had this blog. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s been a couple of years! Back then I’ll confess I didn’t even know she was on the hit show Selling Houses Australia because I don’t have Foxtel. I know, right?!

Tonight we finally met IN REAL LIFE at the Akira Isogawa for Designer Rugs launch! But it was very bizarre because we both felt like it couldn’t possibly really be the first time! I meet people for the first time who I’ve only ever met online ALL the time. But with Shaynna (cheesy as I know  this sounds) it was like chatting to an old friend! She was, I’m pleased to report, just as I imagined. What a pleasure to finally meet!

More on the Designer Rugs event tomorrow.

Shaynna Blaze on how to use paint colour

The Block judge and Selling Houses Australia co-host Shaynna Blaze is also colour consultant to Taubmans. I asked her some questions about using paint and colour in your home. She reveals how she once painted her living and dining rooms emerald green, that she hates painting ceilings (don’t we all?) and she’s currently loving grey walls with pops of colour.

What do you think are the biggest paint colour trends for 2012? Currently, I am loving greys and tinted neutrals such as Taubmans Abracadabra or Taubmans Silvertop and dark shades such as Taubmans Sheffield Grey and Taubmans Invincible. Teaming grey with hints of tangerines, limes and yellows is also very popular at the moment. As we move towards the end of the year and into 2013, ‘grown up’ pastels are becoming increasingly popular and introducing a dark grey to complement these will take the edge off. Accessories are still bold and exciting, with a few more neutrals sneaking in there to balance it out.

The best of last week in interiors

  • On Tuesday I was all kinds of excited to publish my interview with Kelly Hoppen, who I have long admired. Her show Superior Interiors aired in Australia for the first time that night on the Lifestyle Channel. Did you tune in? I would have but I don’t have Foxtel (there’s already not enough hours in the day for all the reality TV I watch!).
  • Loni Parker of the popular online magazine Adore Home announced she has quit her graphic designer job to concentrate on her real passion full-time. Good for you, Loni! The big news is she will launch an online store with the next issue of the mag this Friday. I have written a home profile in there so make sure you check it out!
  • The much anticipated Maison InStyle trade fair was postponed with no new date yet.
  • The new editors of Inside Out magazine were announced as Claire Bradley and Lee Tran Lam after Richard Waller was let go the week before.
  • I confessed how my own impatience has led to me making many  bad interiors decision!
  • On Friday I met Jamee Huntington from In A Designer Home. Have you checked out her online store? It’s selling all kinds of fabulous brands like my faves Armadillo & Co and Dinosaur Designs.
  • Last night Dale and Sophie finally won a challenge on The Block. Did you like their hallway and bedroom? I did. Our friend Darren Palmer was guest judging again too. Who is your favourite judge? I’m really only tuning in on Sundays now for the room reveals as the midweek challenges bore me (I know, I have mentioned this a LOT but it’s just such a shame The Block enjoyment can’t be spread right across the week!).
  • Belle magazine’s super stylist Steve Cordony has finally joined Twitter. Hoorah! Follow him @stevecordony.

Here’s to another fabulous week, addicts!

Darren Palmer on The Block again on Sunday

How stylish are this trio? Three of my favourite industry people: Belle editor in chief Neale Whitaker and interior designers Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer. Darren’s standing in again for third judge John McGrath on Sunday so make sure you tune in. The Sunday room reveals are my favourite.

Are you enjoying this series? Personally, I can’t get enough of the episodes where they show the couples doing the work and the room reveals are great (as is the watching the dynamics of all their relationships!) but I’m still really disappointed in all the irrelevant challenges. Boring! The judges, however, are doing a fantastic job and I particularly like what Shaynna is adding to the mix.

Designer cover stars Greg Natale, Thomas Hamel, Jason Grant and Darren Palmer

I hinted at this exciting project the other week and now I can finally tell you what it was all about! For those of you who don’t know, for my day job I’m editor of Dynamic Business magazine. I recently started thinking about the business side of being an interior designer and what it takes to really make money, go far and have longevity in this industry. Nobody really talks about the perhaps less glamorous business and admin side of the creative industries so I thought it’d be a great idea to interview some people at different stages of their design careers.

The article came together really well (if I don’t say so myself!) with some great insights. I spoke to Thomas Hamel, who has been in the game for 20 years and Greg Natale, who just celebrated ten years of having his own practice. Then there’s Darren Palmer, who shot to fame on homeMADE and The Block (he’s a guest judge on the new series too) and whose business is really starting to take off, and Jason Grant, the freelance stylist working the personal brand with his Murobond paint collections, blog and various collaborations.

The mag’s in news agencies from tomorrow. I hope you enjoy the read. It was a really fun photoshoot!

Are you an interior designer with a head for business or do you find that side of it challenging?

Darren Palmer adds to the replica debate

In this guest post, interior designer Darren Palmer, who rose to fame on homeMADE and The Block, adds an interesting view, and a possible solution, to the replica furniture debate.

“We had an industry debate at Corporate Culture a few years ago to try and decide whether replicas had value. I was on the affirmative, only for the sake of discussing a point that seemed worth debating: that there is clearly a great deal of value in the market given there is so much revenue made from it.

I put forward the idea that given there is such a high demand for luxury, fake or otherwise, surely there are ways to take advantage of that market with integrity whilst hopefully denying the fake furniture market a slice of the pie.

The thinking I had was this: there is high demand for luxury at consumer level and there is a great deal of revenue to be made from it. Replica furniture meets this market. Surely there is a way for legitimate design and established designers to meet the market too?

An example I gave in this discussion was what Stella McCartney achieved with her alliances with Target and H&M. What she was able to do was offer a product at a price point that was accessible without affecting the rest of her brand, or dragging down her high-end perception. I wonder whether there isn’t some way for established, high end furniture manufacturers (the same ones who are affected by the replica furniture market like Eames, Mies Van der Rohe, Hans Wegner, Florence Knoll et al) to offer versions or new offerings using techniques and materials that allow product to be produced at a price point that captures that demand.

My personal view is that there are so many products that already exist in the market at an achievable price point, that are made and sold with integrity, that you can buy and enjoy for years to come, that there is no need to desire a replica of anything. Great design does not only mean design classics but for those that manufacture the real thing perhaps there is a way to cut into some of that great stream of revenue worldwide.

I’m no expert on the business models of the likes of Eames and other design classic manufacturers, and I do not claim to be, though I do think the question is an interesting one, at least as part of this greater issue.

As a footnote I would like to mention two personal experiences of the replica furniture market. The first was when I was trying to use a Tom Dixon beat light in a high end residential project. The beat lamp is a beautiful and original design at a really great price point and was loved by myself and my client. But the lead time on it was 12 weeks. My client wasn’t willing to wait so he purchased a replica instead for not that much less than the original. It was the delay alone that lost a sale for the original and I couldn’t understand why, with such a popular product at such a low price point, there wasn’t stock in Australia. A shame but also understandable from my client’s point of view.

The other experience was with a friend of mine who purchased the expensive version of a replica Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman that’s sold for $1895. When it arrived, the arm was detached from the chair, which had pierced the leather in a few places. When my friend notified the company selling it they sent him a replacement one, however when he asked when they would pick the other one up they told him to just put it on the street. It was worth so little to them that it wasn’t even feasible to send a courier to pick it up and repair it. That should give some indication of the value that the retailers of replicas put on the product they’re selling.

That chair was fixed by me and now sits in my office and I’m ok with having it purely because I have saved another piece of disposable furniture from hitting the rubbish tip.”
