Winter garden tips: How to use the outdoors all year round

While outdoor spaces are often overlooked in winter, they can be wonderful places to entertain and enjoy in the cooler months. In fact, with clever design, an outdoor garden can improve the functionality of your home all year round and it’s something that horticulturalist, landscaper and stylist Adam Robinson is well versed in.

“Everyone feels better in nature. If we can have that daily check in with nature, even in winter, it can heighten cortisol levels and help with your mental wellbeing,” says Adam. Whether it’s entertaining in the evening or enjoying a coffee on a terrace, clever garden design can allow you to take full advantage of an unused garden or balcony when the temperature cools.

While the words ‘winter’ and ‘sun’ often don’t belong in the same sentence, it’s important to utilise natural light when designing an outdoor lounge or dining area and lush plants help to really finish a space. A fire pit is a great way to create a warm and inviting outdoor area and they work well as a centrepiece too.

Square metreage is a big factor in designing an outdoor space also – a smaller space may force you to choose between lounging and dining whereas a larger space will permit both. On this front, Adam recommends choosing versatile, multi-functional furniture pieces that work in different ways to help give you more options.

Adam’s top tips for winter and spring garden design

  1. You don’t want your garden to become a burden so think about the size of your lawn and how much time you’ll need to spend maintaining it.
  2. Place your furniture on paving pads to blur the lines between the hard and soft elements in the garden. Plus, you don’t need to mow under the furniture, giving you more time to enjoy the space.
  3. In smaller spaces, avoid chunky furniture and instead choose furniture that breathes in the space.
  4. Deciduous trees are a great option as they provide shade in summer and let the sun in during winter. But, like lawns, they do require maintenance when they drop their leaves in autumn. Evergreen shrubs are a good, lower maintenance alternative.
  5. When choosing fabrics for your outdoor furniture, we usually go with plain fabrics. It’s not as obvious if they fade in the sun as it would be with a patterned fabric.

Cosy living room ideas from The Designory

With winter on the doorstep, and temperatures heading south, suddenly cocooning inside seems like a very attractive option. But just how can you transform your breezy summer living room to a comfy, wintry living space? We caught up with The Designory director Melissa Bonney, who certainly knows a thing or two about the topic. She shared the simple ways she turns her living room into a cosy sanctuary during the cooler months.

The Designory

Layout
“Cosy never means cramped, so make sure you edit your living space like you would your outfit,” says Melissa who says a room’s layout is the first thing to consider when creating a cosy space.

“Think about the flow of movement through the room and make sure you create an ease of connection within areas. There should be plenty of space for people to sit, relax, talk and unwind. Living spaces which allow for your family and friends to truly engage with each other are always the most inviting homes,” says Melissa.

Layers of texture
With layered texture a design signature for The Designory, it’s no surprise to hear that Melissa recommends the technique for creating an inviting atmosphere in the living room. “Nothing quite says cosy like beautiful textures, and we love to combine them across all surfaces,” says Melissa.

“For the walls, opt for woven artworks, textured wallpaper or even paint them a warmer shade. When it comes to decor items, think about what is going to make your space feel the most luxurious. Soft rugs or carpets underfoot, throws and cushions for seating all help to make a room feel homely, complete and comfortable,” says Melissa.

Get the glow
Melissa believes no living room is complete without a source of heat for the cooler months and her go-to for winter ambience is a gorgeous fireplace. “Never underestimate the power of a beautiful fireplace to create the perfect living environment,” she says.

The Designory

“A fireplace becomes a gathering space in the home, a place where great conversations are shared, and we can relax and reconnect. Try integrating fireplaces into the wall or within joinery designs for a more refined and seamless feel. We love IXL’s new Cannon Latitude fireplace – its elongated profile is the perfect proportion for modern living,” says Melissa.

Lighting is another way in which you can inject warmth and mood into your home – table lamps, overhead pendants and even candle light can change the look and feel of the room.

Natural elements
Natural elements are key to The Designory’s aesthetic and there’s no denying that clever use of natural materials such as timber and leather adds instant warmth to a room. “Human beings have an innate connection with natural materials. It helps us to feel more grounded and connected to our environment.”

Dark, earthy shades dominate I Love Linen’s winter collection

Given I Love Linen’s creative director Lauren Roe has recently moved from inner-city Melbourne to the lush Queensland hinterland, it’s a little ironic that her latest collection is full of moody hues. From deep olive green to charcoal and classic navy, the look definitely walks on the darker side but we like it very much!

This French linen quilt cover set is olive green on one side and navy/ivory on the other. Also, note the gorgeous tassel throw too!

“We wanted to create a beautiful moody collection that really suited those cooler nights, where you just want to wrap yourself up in beautiful linen and snuggle down. We were drawn to darker and earthier colours for that reason, as they really create the right look in our opinion!” says Lauren who explains that even a pop of dark colour (such as a pillow case) can transform the bed for the chillier months.

Linen sheet set in navy

Not straying far from the brand’s roots, linen lovers will be glad to see that Lauren has expanded her French linen bedding range too. “Linen’s texture and drape make it a dream to work with, and the possibilities are endless when it comes to bringing new and beautiful colours to our customers,” says Lauren.

“The idea was to build on the success of our classic French Stripes linen, by introducing a new inky charcoal stripe, and then offering beautiful double sided French linen duvet covers that have stripes on one side and a lovely colour on the other,” says Lauren.

Lauren has also used the fabric to make beanbags for the first time. “As a further addition, and after much online searching for a new beanbag, I decided to launch a range of classic French Linen bean bags in both natural and warm grey colours.”

The winter range also boasts super chunky knitted wool throws and cushions with crochet-like details. “The new range of throws and blankets is a special milestone for us, as we wanted to offer pieces that really complement our much-loved French linen bedding. We just love how cosy they make the bed. They’re all woven or knitted by hand too which really increases that artisanal quality we always seek in our products.” she says.

Winter styling tips for creating a cosy outdoor space

Making use of outdoor spaces in the cooler months doesn’t need to be a challenge with these simple tips from Tait.

1. Material comfort

Throw a cushion or two on outdoor seats to extend the use of outdoor spaces and furniture during cooler months. Tait offers custom-made cushions for many of their benches such as Linear, Flint and Slot. Apply texture for visual interest and an extra buffer from the chill.

2. Layer up

Sling a throw or two across your furniture for an uber stylish autumn/winter space. These Waverley Wool Herringbone blankets have been procured by Tait from Australia’s last remaining woolen mill, the Waverley Mills in Tasmania (established in 1874). Soft and light, yet very warm, the throws are crafted from fine 18-micron Merino wool that’s spun and woven on site.

3. Take shelter

The prize for the ultimate outdoor kitchen has to be Tilt. You can cook on Tilt’s integrated Electrolux BBQ without rain, hail or snow spoiling the party — thanks to the showstopping 2.2m high verandah canopy. This fabbo fold-up, do-it-all unit even includes cabinets for stowing cooking and eating utensils. And for an innovative solution to help thwart cold winds — try creating a mini wall with stackable Garden Tower elements packed with dense potted shrubbery.

4. Warm as toast

Bring on Thor Fire Pit (800mm diameter), Tait’s modern take on the traditional campfire, to infuse a touch of traditional romance and warmth into outdoor spaces. Elegant yet delightfully simple, just pop in the wood, light it up, and sit back with a hot chocolate.

How a new coat of paint can transform your home this winter

By Bree Leech

It’s important to be adventurous with colours you love — don’t be afraid to use different combinations or contrasting colours together. Paint is so simple to use to customise your own space and can be changed seasonally. Below, we’ve kept key furniture pieces the same and given one room two completely different moods.

Cool palette

Both quintessentially winter trends derived from Dulux’s Wildland palette, each has its own feel. We’ve simply replaced some feature pieces in the room to tie into the new colour palette for each space; but the message is you can transform your room with paint, keep your main furniture items and choose accessories to suit your new colour scheme with items such as cushions and homewares.

Cool palette (seen above) winter tips:

  • A graphic wall pattern mimics mountainous, icy landscapes; and adds subtle visual interest to the space.
  • Primitive textured furnishings in leather, wool, stone, fur and pale blonde timbers soften the geometric wall pattern and cooler, grey-based colours.

Dark palette (seen above) winter tips:

  • Sultry hues help make large spaces feel cosy.
  • Add focal points in lighter colours or warm tones to create depth and intensity.

Jen’s tips for changing up your interiors for autumn/winter

Did you know we only have a few days left of summer? Sad, I know, but there’s always a silver lining. I don’t know about you but I love a bit of a seasonal decorating change-up in my home. Any excuse to buy and play around with new accessories, I say! It doesn’t have to be expensive either. Here are my top tips.

Cosy throws from Freedom's latest range

1. Change your cushions. You might want to swap out your brights and neons for something a bit more warm or muted. And think about textures too: now’s the time to experiment with knitted and velvet cushions for the colder months. Gorgeous!
