Stylist Jason Grant creates new paint colours for Murobond

Now with 70 paint colours to his name as part of his collaboration with Murobond, creating new hues is as exciting a process as ever for Byron-based stylist Jason Grant.

This week sees the launch of his sixth collection, Paradigm Shift, created in isolation during lockdown. But like the others, it’s mostly inspired by nature. “I like to take it all in and notice all the details, and of course I see all the colours,” he says. “The new colours highlight earth elements and nature’s beauty.”

Jason art directed, produced, styled and photographed the collection solo in his studio during isolation. “I was doing some deep thinking too,” he said. “The palette is named Paradigm Shift, a concept that I discovered and spiralled into. It’s the notion of a major change that happens when the usual way of thinking about doing something is replaced by a new or a different way – a concept that inspires me and gives me hope and hope is what we need. I’ve always been a hippy at heart, focusing on positivity and high vibrations.”

He loves how a paint can transform room, an object or even a mood. “Nothing beats a fresh coat of paint for a new lease on life. It’s all in your mindset.”

Although it had been a while since he created new colours for Murobond, Jason said it came easily. “It comes naturally because I love that I get to do this. With everything I do, I love to create the process to create the result.

“Creating colours gets easier. I work in quite an analogue way, first conceptualising then creating the colour references that we colour match. This time we pretty much nailed the colours that were in my head first go.”

Because he likes to tell stories with words as well as pictures, Jason enjoys coming up with the colour names too. “These colours are inspired by a few clever people and a few favourite moments or objects.” Names include the very Aussie Flowering Gum, Wattle Seed and Davidson Plum, as well Guacamole, Vagabond, Kai and more.

“I love them all,” Jason says. “Flowering Gum in a soft pink; Vagabond, the subtle light shade of uplifting grey; and Kai, based on the leaf of a gum tree, are three standouts.”

Jason’s currently busy with a variety of projects, creating content for brands, working on a few residential and commercial spaces, including a restaurant. The biggest interiors trends he’s seeing for 2020 are creating the ultimate in home comforts, simple things becoming luxuries and simplification of living.

Jason is part of Denfair’s virtual design event this week. Tune into his online masterclass Live Your Best Creative Life, on Thursday at 12 noon.

Modern Retro Home by Mr Jason Grant: how to mix old and new

When stylist Mr Jason Grant started working on his third book, he wasn’t sure what the finished product would be. While he knew the book had to be informative and of course beautiful, it wasn’t until he and photographer Lauren Bamford started shooting houses that he found its theme.

“The working title of book three wasn’t Modern Retro Home,” explains Jason. “But this best summed up the type of houses I gravitated towards. For the book we shot houses of many creative friends and colleagues, that really showcased contemporary Australian homes that mix old and new, modern and retro.”

Mr Jason Grant

It’s a style close to his heart: “I have always been a fan of mixing old with new for layered interiors that evolve over time.” The book is a culmination of the tips and tricks Jason has learnt from 10-plus years of styling. “This book is super hard working with lots of information on every page,” says Jason. “You can open it at any page for a how-to. Each image I deconstruct and explain why this room worked and what the idea is behind it.”

A go-to guide for any budget, Modern Retro Home takes you inside the abodes of those who effortlessly blend modern furniture with vintage pieces — think geometric patterns, neon colours and such items as record players and old-fashioned radios.

Organised into chapters according to each room of the house, the images are captioned by Jason with information on how the room is styled and why it worked. There are also plenty of styling tips on how to choose the right colour, shape, pattern and texture, focal points, scale and lighting.

Despite its adventure into the past, don’t expect to find tired-looking rooms in this book! Get your hands on Modern Retro Home ($49.99) now.

Product road test: Amy checks out new digital moodboard maker

An enthusiastic scrapbooker from way back, I’ve always jumped at the opportunity to collate my creative ideas (hello Pinterest!). But as an interior stylist (when I’m not writing for Interiors Addict) I now find myself doing this in a professional capacity. So I was rather excited to hear about the new digital styling platform Style Sourcebook, that brings this technology direct to the consumer.

Style Sourcebook features an easy-to-use interface

Featuring more than 700 brands and 30,000 products, the platform is a product sourcing and styling destination that allows interiors enthusiasts (and if you read this site, the chances are you are one!) to search for finishes, fittings, furniture and homewares and drag them onto their own digital moodboard.

“The objective is to bring all the products, tools and inspiration together across different retailers to help you create your perfect space,” says Style Sourcebook founder Lisa Cousens who has had over 15 years’ experiencing building digital platforms for online publishers such as Fairfax, Sensis and REA Group. It was after Lisa renovated her own home, and spent countless hours sourcing from individual retailers, that she came up with the idea of collating them to simplify the renovation and styling experience.

My mood board

Aside from products and finishes, you can also add text and inspirational images too. Personally, I found it a breeze to use (you literally drag and drop) and there’s a good selection of products within the site that are stylish and on trend. The search function is also easy to use. And what’s more, when you’re finished designing, the site creates a virtual shopping list and you can click through easily to buy.

The other aspect of the site is the ability to seek inspiration and expert advice from interior designers. There are several designers currently registered on the platform including Mr Jason Grant, Aimee Tarulli and yours truly! You can get in touch if you like their work and would like to discuss a similar project.

We’re loving: stylist Mr Jason Grant’s debut tile range

In his first collaboration with tile company Di Lorenzo, Mr Jason Grant drew on his favourite colours to create his debut tile range, a simple collection of handmade encaustic tiles in gorgeous sorbet tones and neutrals.

Hexagon tile in Skyfall

“Colour is key to my style and the work that I create. For this first collaboration with Di Lorenzo I wanted the colours to be standout but, to be honest, these are my favourite shades – 1950s pastels combined with deeper earthy tones. There is a very definite colour palette that I always gravitate towards, but the colours needed to work as tiles in peoples’ spaces. Ultimately though, they are my signature colours,” says Jason of the range that features tiles that are available in several shapes – hexagon, diamond, square and rectangular.

Mini brick tile in Sand, Deep Sea, Peonie, Ash and Skyfall

Titled ‘New Paradise’ the collection also draws inspiration from Jason’s favourite places – Bondi and Byron Bay. “The title of the collection stems from my life and love of Bondi and Byron Bay. I’m always inspired by nature – the ocean, but also the beautiful, lush hinterland and rivers,” says Jason.

Diamond tiles in Skyfall and Deep Sea

“It’s hard to choose a favourite of course but I love the mini brick shape and the new take on the subway tile. I also love the Peonie (pale pink) and Skyfall (pale blue) shades and when put together, they are my favourite colour combination,” says Jason of the collection that can be used on the wall and floor in vast combinations of patterns, shapes and colours. “Available in multiple shapes and sizes, the specifier can create endless colour and pattern combinations. Or you can play it safe in one shade.”

Jason’s favourite colour combination – Peonie and Skyfall

“The tiles are all handmade and I’m super proud of the collection we have created together. I can’t wait to see them in peoples’ homes!” says Jason.

Cosy comfort: Mr Jason Grant’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection

While the colour palette of steel blue and cool grey is beautifully tranquil, it’s the myriad textures that make Mr Jason Grant’s new collection his cosiest yet. Chunky blankets and throws, woven denim ottomans, oversized cushions and textural rugs abound. “I feel we have really captured the look and feel I want as a brand this season – something quintessentially Australian,” says Jason.

“At the core, MJG is about relaxed, honest, natural style. For me as a stylist, I think about how things will work in a home and also in an image as things need to be beautiful but practical. Everything needs to feel easy and not too complicated as we head into winter for a cosy feeling, but also taking into account the milder winters we have in Australia.”

I love that textured cushion!

As for his pick of the new collection, Jason cites the Cabin Stripe cushions and throws as some of his favourites. “I love the deep shades of grey and blue that were inspired by stormy oceans and they are made from cosy mohair with chunky tassels.”

Jason Grant with his beloved Boston Terrier Sophia and his favourites from the range – the Cabin Stripe cushion and throw

“The collection has a focus on simple things that are additions to the home – I like everything to feel kind of timeless and not too disposable. I think of this range as a little bit of everyday luxury that can add style and comfort.” Part of the MJG launch collection, fans will be happy to find that they can still purchase the popular tan leather story too.

I’m coveting these knitted baskets and don’t think they’ll last long!

The collection was photographed in Jason’s beloved Byron Bay. “It’s paradise, my second home and my happy place. It has a creative buzz that I love and we have our retail outpost at Newrybar Merchants just a short drive out of town. I’m always inspired by nature – the bush and the beach,” says Jason.

Blue crush: Jason Grant’s dream bathroom

In the latest instalment of the Reece Designer Looks series, super stylist Mr Jason Grant has teamed up with Melbourne’s Doherty Design Studio to create one seriously gorgeous bathroom. Drawing heavily on his neighborhood for inspiration, Bondi local Jason has infused the space with plenty of his trademark crisp, clean good looks. “It’s no secret that I call Bondi home and love the iconic Icebergs pool – it’s my happy place and a source of constant inspiration,” says Jason.

Geometric shapes and a gorgeous blue palette combine to create a crisp yet inviting space that is super practical too.  “The bathroom for me is all about everyday luxury, a room that shouldn’t be forgotten about. It needs to be practical, functional but can still be a beautiful and inspiring sanctuary, decorated just like any other space in your home,” says Jason who included an in-built ledge in the vaniuty providing the perfect spot for pretty perfume bottles and other personal items.

Designer Looks has seen Reece collaborate with a variety of leading designers, editors, stylists and architects to produce a range of inspirational looks in 3D. The initiative has seen key creatives teamed with a leading architect or designer to create a visual concept of their dream bathroom that is then brought to life with 3D digital renders and floorplans. “Collaboration is how I like to work best. The sharing of two different perspectives and sets of ideas from often creates a unique outcome and brings the most exciting results,” says Jason.

unnamed

Collaborations thus far have included Adele Bates and 4D Studio, Nicky Lobo and Thomas Coward, Mandi Keighran and Tony Chenchow. In exciting news, an upcoming instalment will include our very own Jen Bishop who will be collaborating with the expert stager Naomi Findlay of Silk Staging. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Mr Jason Grant’s interiors trend forecast for 2016

By Jason Grant

My job as a stylist is to share what I see happening in the market here, there and everywhere. As always, I don’t suggest you be a slave to trends but there is no escaping their influence. Choose to get onboard or ignore completely, it’s up to you!

image001

The biggest trend on the radar is soft brights. They are going to be big! Pantone led the way with the announcement of their two colours of the year for 2016: Serenity and Rose Quartz. This pale blue and pale pink will be the leading colours in this trend of soft shades. Minimal black and white and the Scandi look are at saturation point, so it’s time to embrace colour and add some to your space. A new year and a fresh start — no need to reinvent, just a little evolution.

I understand colour isn’t for everyone but these soft shades are easy to work with. For those not brave enough to play with colour in a big way, start small with textiles, cushions and accessories. And, for those more brave, think floor rugs, bed linen and artworks for a bigger statement. I recommend Urban Road for affordable and fashion forward artworks. These dream-like shades have a nod to nostalgia and a touch of ’50s retro. Add a fresh update with some new linen, perhaps Aura Home, they are always up to date with on-trend textiles and a mix of colour and patterns.

In general, 2016 will be pretty but not too feminine.

Another trend to keep in mind coming into the new year is a focus on comfortable homes. We take pride in our homes and now more than ever, our emphasis will be on entertaining and relaxing in our individual spaces. So collect and surround yourself with things that make you happy as well as secure and comfortable. Remember it’s your home and it should feel good!

The Tabletop Project day 5: interior stylist Mr Jason Grant

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

Jason and his dog, Sophia
Jason and his dog, Sophia

“Christmas for me is a time to relax and unwind, I like to keep things simple and not too Christmassy,” says Jason Grant, who styled the Painted Rail Dining Table.  “My Christmas table setting is like my own decorating style: relaxed, laidback and casual.

“Of course it’s colourful too with a touch of my two favourites — nautical stripes and a little bit of nature. I love incorporating nature into all things that I do and have used blue spruce, a type of pine, as my touch of Christmas as decoration on the table (from Pearson’s Florist). I love that it’s classic Christmas with a twist. I love to customise and to use what I already have. I made these paper placemats from some artist paper and some spare paint and used irregular brush strokes to create the stripes in my favourite shade blue.

0018_DSC4319-2

0026_DSC4338-2

“I love combining timber with strong bright colours I think this is a very Australian style and a Christmas table setting is the perfect time to add a pop. I have used the Hay Kaleido trays from Yellow Bungalow. Beeswax candles Queen B are perfect for the table. I love scented candles but not at the dinner table. Candles always add a little magic. I love to serve my favourite prawns, pavlova (which I love to decorate at the table with summer berries) ginger beer and champagne. Remember to leave room for these and not overcrowd your table . I like a layered but streamlined style table.

Jason, you're making us hungry!

Stylist Jason Grant’s Christmas gift wrapping tips

Wrapping presents can be in equal parts exciting and daunting. What are Jason’s top tips? “Keep it simple. Choose one wrapping paper and one type of ribbon for a streamlined look and maximum impact. En masse they will look neat and uniform. A tip for wrapping: make sure you don’t use too much paper on each present, excess will look messy. Measure and cut the paper to size so you have just enough. Precision folding is best and use good tape and sharp scissors.”

Jason’s step by step guide to wrapping presents

1. Be prepared: Use good tape and sharp scissors. Avoid excess paper for a neater finish.

QVB JG Present Wrap 1 (1)

2. Precision: Don’t rush. Measure twice, cut once.

QVB JG Present Wrap 2

3. In the fold: If you’ve cut just the right amount of paper, folding the ends should be simple. A nice square edge always looks best.

QVB JG Present Wrap 3

4. Theme: Choose wrapping paper that has personality. Have a common theme so people recognise your presents under the tree.

QVB JG Present Wrap 4

5. Finishing touches: don’t be afraid to dress up your gifts. A simple decoration does the trick.

A first look at Freedom’s latest collection, styled by Jason Grant

Nothing beats switching things up at home to herald the warmer days and the abundance of sunshine. The new Freedom Spring/Summer 2014 Collection is a culmination of colour, print and pattern. A true celebration of Australian interiors.

“Freedom has embraced everything there is to love about colour for the new summer collection,” says senior homewares buyer Korryn Bentley. “Remember those pastels we all grew up with — reminiscent of 20c worth of mixed lollies? We’ve grown up and so has the palette, but it’s just as sweet. We know colour makes an interior a happier place to be, this season we have plenty of options.”

Stylist Mr Jason Grant, whose second book is released later this month, styled these gorgeous images. He said: ““I’m loving the latest collection from Freedom, a welcome burst of colour and pattern for the warmer months. Mixing geometric patterns, bright pops of colour and gelato shades with classic shapes and timber pieces, the collection is fun and fresh.

“Of course I love anything nautical or tropical and there are anchors, stripes, oars and palm leaves everywhere! The collection is perfect for adding some summer vibes and relaxed, laid back style to your home.”

Four new decorating stories embody the spirit of an Australian summer. You can choose how you play with colour, but Freedom have helpfully done the groundwork for you to get you there:

Sorbet Dream

A soothing palette of pastel tones and grey makes for a home that is beautifully serene. When designing with simplicity in mind, every detail has been introduced with precision and beauty. Whether it’s the artisanal feel of contrast glazing on the Talleo vessel or the graphic statement of the Boyd rugs neon on neutral stripes, it’s the little things that count.

Sunseeker

Balancing classic and contemporary elements, Sunseeker delivers a fresh energy to interiors. Whether it’s the Saltram adjustable stool that combines the honest of timber with industrial form or our solid elm Constable dining table with mixed bench and chair seating, Sunseeker makes home life less ordinary. Earthy terracotta also features heavily, especially across the Terra vessel collection that has been handmade in Portugal.

Colour Fiesta

Making a strong statement with ease, Colour Fiesta gives a bold new direction to the warmer months. Start with the classic understatement of a hero neutral piece like the Benson Modular Sofa and build your look from there. Dip into new shades with everyday pieces, like the Pompidou table or the Epping nest of three tables, each given a playful splash of colour.

Island Life

Relaxed yet eye-catching, the living is easy with Island Life. From rope and natural weaves to bottle green glass; shipshape, nautical touches also steal the scene. Look no further than the Demijohn table lamp for proof that a little high sea inspiration can still be contemporary and urban. Rounding out Island Life is a range of new season cushions that have been rendered in vintage inspired prints. Case in point? The Hula cushion, it’s fun and unique and will get noticed for all the right reasons.

New collection pieces are arriving weekly from today. Shop online.
