Design inspirations: Turia Pitt’s unique, Zoom ready home office

Bestselling author, athlete, and mindset coach, Turia Pitt, was inspired to reinvigorate her home office after a stay at the much-Instagrammed SOUL of Gerringong holiday accommodation. The trip left her feeling “like Michelle Obama on holidays,” so she worked with its creator Simone Mathews (who has since sold it) to bring that magical holiday energy into her own office.

“Before, Turia’s home office space was quite dull and characterless; not a very inspiring or motivating space to spend time and work,” says Simone, of SOUL Home.

Turia and Simone

With the shift to online meetings off the back of COVID-19, Turia wanted to create an office backdrop that reflected her casual and fun personality. The calm, neutral wall colours and creative furniture choices allow Turia to host online interviews and online meetings without worrying about her backdrop.

“Before, I used to be embarrassed if people came over, but now I want them to come in and sit in my office,” Turia comments. “Actually, it’s probably the most relaxing space in the whole house!”

Simone always employs a 70/20/10 ratio in her styling, blending three styles into a personalised but cohesive space. For Turia’s office space, the driving theme was contemporary design, as seen with the furniture choices. Organic materials were incorporated through the use of timber and linen, and the leather chair added a unique retro twist.

If your office feels stifling in comparison, Simone has shared her top tips to revamp your own office space:

Say “so long!” to traditional office furniture

“When it comes to picking furniture for your office, I tend to steer away from the traditional office style furniture. There are so many great, stylish furniture pieces that can double for your office and cater to both form and function,” Simone says.

She suggests swapping out that drab filing cabinet for a sleek sideboard or console, so you can store your documents in style. Turia’s office reimagined her tired corner desk as this dynamic table and chair set.

Incorporate nostalgic touches

With many of us working longer hours, a comfortable and relaxing office space can stave off burn out. Find what transports you to your dream destination – it might be palm trees, or a particular exotic scent – and make that a focal element.

“I like to make styling easy, so you just want to pick pieces and things that really connect with you on a sensory level,” Simone adds.

Focus lighting on your working areas

“Task lights and wall lights are great in an office, versus your general overhead ceiling lighting. They add to the mood and provide vital focus lighting on the areas where you most need,” Simone explains. “In Turia’s office, I’m using a brass statement wall light that is highly functional yet looks super cool. Personally, I think wall lights are so underutilised when it comes to styling.”

Incorporate artwork that ignites your creativity

“Sometimes you just need a mood board to inspire, keep you on track or get over a block in your day. Choosing the right artwork can act as your mood board; a moment for your eyes to readjust away from the screen and take a moment to drift, reset, and then revert back to the task,” says Simone.

A former mining engineer, Turia’s love of rocks and stones is her creative driver. This was reflected in the specially commissioned Ozlem Savelle artwork, as well as the brass wall lights and stone greys of the office lounge seating.

Think about window treatments

“Window treatments are the final layer for any space, and I’m always a fan of doubling sheer curtains with a black out blind,” Simone suggests. “This combinations ensures you have a space you feel comfortable at any time of day.”

Bring holiday magic home: interior design tips

With Australian borders closed for the time being, a European summer escape has never seemed further away. But this doesn’t mean we have to completely miss out on the holiday magic! Sydney interior designer Justine Wilson, shares four simple steps to bring some holiday magic into the comfort of your own home.

Travel books
Having lovely open pages on your coffee table or some beautiful travel photography on your kitchen bench, can bring that touch of European summer you’ve been missing. It might tease your tastebuds into creating a European dish or take you back in time to dreams of past getaways.

European scents
Create a holiday ambience through some beautifully lit candles. A delicate arrangement of mismatched candleholders can uplift your mood and remind you of a lovely holiday from the past. You could try some floral scents for a French vibe, a musky spice for a Moroccan feel or waves of ocean scents that take you back to the Greek Islands!

Gallery walls
Many European homes like to feature large gallery walls, with a variety of old and new decor. Due to their smaller spaces, Europeans have developed a charming cluttered art style along their walls.

This could be a great time to decorate your own walls with travel memories and mementos, breathing some new life into your home. It’s as simple as framing travel photos, posters, tickets from previous holidays, or even inspiring quotes from European musicians or poets. Your new collection could become a beautiful talking point within your home that grows with your travelling dreams.

Eclectic interiors
European homes are often an interweaving of styles; trinkets from antique markets and inherited treasures mixed in with modern styles of furniture. Parisian interiors and English country houses are both well known for this assorted aesthetic. Think of it as mixing a Persian rug with a rustic coffee table, plus a modern slip covered sofa. Another European home feature is the display of mismatched cushions and textures. For example, you could display a tartan throw with a rich, velvet cushion whilst adding a floral and patterned feature cushion as well.

Although the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder, we can adopt the European style of layering to bring a cosy ambience into our homes whilst creating some vacation vibes and inspo for the future!

The winner of September 7 Vignettes with Mr Jason Grant

I really enjoyed this month’s 7 Vignettes and felt there was a lot of feeling and love behind all the images. With themes like nostalgia, family and four-legged friend, chosen by our guest judge Mr Jason Grant, it was perhaps no surprise. I sometimes like the stories behind the images as much, if not more than, the images themselves!

I won’t keep you dangling any longer. The winner, as chosen by stylist Jason, was Helen Hamilton, aka @overgrown_garden. Congratulations, Helen! “I love the thought that has gone into these images and that they have been shot as a series,” Jason said. “I love the timber background, the simple and relaxed styling and of course the pop of yellow — beautiful!”

Helen wins a signed copy of Jason’s just launched second book, Holiday at Home. Here’s Jason and I at his book signing at West Elm in Melbourne at the weekend.

Meet Jason Grant and I when West Elm opens in Chatswood

I am so, so excited! We’d love you to come and join us for a book signing and I’ll be doing a Q&A with Jason too. Did I mention there’ll be ice cream? More on that later…

As part of its global expansion, America’s Williams-Sonoma Inc is opening stores for all four brands in Chatswood Chase on Thursday 28 August. Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn will be located on level one of the shopping centre, with Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm located on level two. The four stores will occupy a combined retail space of 1,716 square metres and employ more than 100 full-time, part-time and casual staff.

“We are excited to continue our global expansion in Australia at Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre,” said Laura Alber, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We look forward to sharing our exceptional home furnishings along with unique in-store experiences and outstanding customer service with customers on Sydney’s North Shore who want to decorate, entertain and live well.”

I can’t believe it’s been more than a year since Williams-Sonoma, Inc. opened its first Australian stores in Bondi Junction in May 2013. A Melbourne West Elm store followed in Chapel Street, South Yarra in September 2013. A further four stores for Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm will open in Chadstone Shopping Centre, Melbourne later this year. Watch this space for more details on that opening!
