Sage x Clare’s fab new Ibiza-inspired autumn range

Harlequin prints combined with Moroccan stars and statement animal print? It sounds like an impossible mix but not when left to the talented folk at Sage x Clare. Influenced by the iconic Spanish island of Ibiza, the new range ‘Le Tigre’ has a free-spirited feel with hand drawn florals and a heady 70’s infused colour palette, plus plenty of the brand’s signature handmade details.

Sage x Clare’s new ‘Passa Velvet’ bed cover is a stunner!

“I became enthralled with an image I saw online of a boutique hotel in Ibiza called Los Enamorados. This image then inspired me to have a look further into Ibiza, beyond my stereotyped view of the ‘party’ isle and what I discovered was another much lesser-known and charming side. A side that was all about quiet villages and off-the-beaten-track beaches, lived in by all types of creatives who bring an edgy and hip vibe to the area,” says Sage x Clare’s designer Phoebe Bell.

The inspiration has resulted in more of the luxe bohemian vibe we’ve come to associate with the brand. “I fell head over heels for the imagery capturing crystal clear waters and hidden sandy coves and felt compelled to try and capture this laidback sense of bohemia in our next collection,” says Phoebe of the Spanish inspiration.

Fans of the brand will be excited to see that this range includes a rather fabulous selection of womenswear; as a mother, with another child currently one on the way, a desire to create comfortable yet stylish womenswear makes a lot of sense.

“I’m really excited about our first foray into womenswear and let’s face it, it was always bound to happen! We’ve designed leggings and sweaters that can effortlessly take you from home to the cafe and back again. Comfy yet stylish is always my go-to,” says Phoebe.

The brand went through many iterations of the apparel to make sure it was perfect. “We needed to have the softest of soft material, plenty of stretch to make it comfortable and just the right amount of material for just the right fit. We love a baggy jumper, but baggy leggings? Nah!” says Phoebe.

Be still my beating heart…

Of her favourite pieces, Phoebe struggles to choose but she’s rather fond of the new Passa Velvet bedcover. “I always love to update my tufted throw and I’m crushing over the colour palette and versatility of that one; I just can’t decide which side I like the best as I’m a sucker for animal print anything!” says Phoebe.

Sage x Clare

There’s a new line-up of door mats too – there’s one that reads ‘G’day’ while a leopard print and 1960’s inspired daisy print one rounds out the mix.

With a new baby on the way, Phoebe is rather invested in the range’s children’s offering. “I’ve got my eye on quite a few things from our Kids + Baby range, in particular the sweet bird print on our Casanita baby blanket, the adorable Rari woven wall hanging and the Ethel patch cushion is a new fave that I could style both in-and-out of the kids’ rooms,” says Phoebe.

Ultimately though, it’s the usual mismatch of prints and colours that excites Phoebe the most. “We’re proud to design prints that unexpectedly and expertly clash with one another. I also can’t wait to see how our customers choose to style prints from the new range; they always inspire me just as much as the collection itself does!”

Sage x Clare: Morocco meets the Med in new collection

Sage x Clare’s new season ‘Soleil Collection’ landed in our inbox a few days ago, causing a flurry of excitement between Jen and I. Combining braiding, sequins, beading, charms and gold pops, the gorgeous new bedding and accessories range is brimming with that wonderful, free-spirited bohemian feel that the brand does so well and we couldn’t wait to share it with you.

“Our new range has an international flavour, combining the romanticism of the Mediterranean with a mystique inspired by some of the world’s most exotic locations,” says the brand’s founder Phoebe Bell hinting at Morocco – a destination that is woven throughout the range. “The range’s authentic, hand-crafted details are evocative of the artisanal wares found in the colourful medinas of Marrakech and its surrounds,” adds Phoebe.

Stripes, stylised florals, flowing shapes, bold sunbursts, terrazzo and a fun nod to Picasso round out the collection that is full of updated favourites as well as some brand-new designs. “We’re not ones to ever sit still, so this range sees a launch into new categories, including an exclusive kids’ bedlinen range, napery, aprons and scrunchies,” says Phoebe.

A first for Sage x Clare, the kids’ range is pretty special – bold graphics, hand-drawn patterns and a colour palette inspired by balmy European destinations (I love the terracotta and blue spot) make for a pretty intoxicating mix. The debut range also features a colour-blocked coverlet, muslin wraps, oversized smartie cushions, storage baskets and a floral-inspired play mat.

Hard-pressed to pick a favourite design from across range, Phoebe settles on the ‘Mathilde’ stripe range in the ‘Canteloupe’ colourway. “I’m in love with this design and in person, the colours are captivating, and I cannot wait to get it on my bed!” says Phoebe.

Personally, I love the sequin embellished graphic details (such as the hamsa palm) that represent a new look for the brand. “The hamsa palm was really borne from the very destinations the collection was inspired by. It is an ancient Middle Eastern symbol that has come to mean different things to different cultures. Broadly speaking though, it’s regarded as a protective talisman thought to bring good fortune and happiness and we thought it would be a lovely reference to weave throughout the range.”

Sage x Clare’s fab new bathmat, storage baskets & more!

It wasn’t long ago that we brought you the gorgeous American folk inspired Terra collection from Sage x Clare and this month sees some fabulous new additions to the range. “Following the heart-warming response to our Terra range, we’re beyond thrilled to introduce a selection of products as part of a mid-season offering, once more bringing together the traditional and the contemporary to deliver all the happy homeware feels,” says founder and director Phoebe Bell.

Sage x Clare

“The raw beauty of the American desert is reflected in our mid-season colour palette, from the burnt hues of its stark landscape to the deep blues and vibrant pinks of its ever-changing sky. It’s earthy with the signature pops of colour that Sage x Clare has become known for,” says Phoebe.

And with more of the earthy hues that made the original range so lovely, the update brings with it more retro florals and heavenly colour combinations including a statement-making velvet coral and burgundy floral bedcover. “The Kimi bedcover is every bit as luscious as it looks, trust me! With stock arriving this week, we’ve got you covered for the true depths of winter,” says Phoebe.

The Kimi bedcover is one of two new bedcovers and there’s a brand spanking new mountain-scape wall hanging to entice too. “Our most popular prints and patterns have been reimagined, merging American folk influences and retro florals with earthy hues and delicate embellishments,” says Phoebe.

Also, for the first time ever, the range has been expanded to include storage baskets, linen blend robes and cosy retro house socks. “The new pieces ensure you can have (or wear!) a piece of Sage x Clare in every room of the house. Keeping things in order at home as well as having comfy yet luxurious loungewear to relax in are the ultimate home goals! I love the house socks. They’re both nostalgic and keep the tootsies warm – I put mine on every night as soon as I get home!”

Sage x Clare’s new range has 1970’s American folk vibe

With 1970’s inspired hues seemingly everywhere at present (I’ve noticed a lot of rust, terracotta, khaki and mustard adorning the fashion racks!), Sage x Clare’s latest collection ‘Terra’ is rather on point. “The collection has a distinct not to the 70’s and merges American folk influences and retro florals with earthy hues and delicate embellishments,” says Sage x Clare’s founder and director Phoebe Bell.

Sage x Clare

“We were inspired by the raw beauty of the American desert and the fabulous self-expression of the 70’s to bring a collection that has a feel-good and carefree vibe,” says Phoebe. And that it does. There’s plenty of retro floral prints paired with checks and fringing across bed linen, bath mats, cushions, blankets, throws, wall hangings and rugs.

And as for the palette, it’s a glorious mix of mustard, peach, lilac and baby blue. “The new season colour palette was inspired by the burnt hues and vibrant skies of the desert and its ever-changing landscape. You’ll find earthy tones and highlights of soft pinks, blues and greens to bring a collection that is both easy to live with but includes dynamic pops of vibrancy and happiness,” says Phoebe.

The Nopah tufted blanket and rainbow print Coachella cushion are collection highlights

Bedlinen and cushions aside, the fabulous new wall hangings really conjure the free-love vibe while making a big statement in the room. “My favourite pieces include the Hayfolk bedlinen, Borrego wall hanging and Juno Beni rug. I love the retro vibe of each of these pieces along with the textural quality and warmth that they bring to a home,” says Phoebe.

And as for the most popular parts of the range you better get in quick if you’re after one of the brand’s coveted bath mats and the new Nopah tufted blanket and Inyo round cushions are selling fast too. “They are crowd favourites alongside the new bedlinen prints Hayfolk and Cady,” says Phoebe.

Phoebe is is also excited to add sleepwear to the range this season – with two prints available you can literally match your sheets! “The linen blend hand printed PJ’s are so cosy and fab for winter. They’ll be difficult to take off, so we’ll be wearing our PJ shirts with a classic pair of jeans!

Jemma Bell moves to India for love and starts Soda & Stitch

If there’s something we love as much as great homewares it’s a good old-fashioned love story, and today we bring you both! Aussie textile and graphic designer Jemma Bell moved to India for love and as an added bonus, has ended up starting her own textiles business with some gorgeous results!

Soda-and-Stitch-bedlinen-childrens-beds-blankets-cushions-kids

The globetrotter was previously living in London and each year, she would meet her sister Phoebe (of homewares store Sage x Clare) in India for her annual designing and buying trip. “During our trip early last year, we decided to treat ourselves and see India from the air. We took a hot air balloon flight! After the flight, I met the man who is crazy enough to actually start and run a balloon company in India, a fellow Aussie called Paul. We spent a few days having dinner with him and then I went back to London. But Paul and I kept in contact and not long after, he came to London for eight days to visit. And about five days in, he asked me to move to Jaipur! Turns out I’m just as mad as him. I made the big move in July last year. Scary, daunting, challenging, but very rewarding!”

Starting Soda + Stitch was somewhat of a natural progression with Jemma always having wanted her own textiles business. She had been freelancing as a graphic and textile designer and gotten restless designing for other people and their businesses.

“It did take me a little while to find my feet in India,” says Jemma. “Everything in my life had changed! But I slowly started working on finding suppliers, making decisions on branding and the process of creating patterns and designs. I have to admit, the creative process took some time. It’s hard to be your own critic and make decisions when it’s just you!” But she got there and Soda + Stitch was born in April.

Jemma is the third member of her family to make the move into homewares but her background was perhaps the most relevant! Sister Phoebe’s background was in law before she became a stylist for Country Road and then started her online homewares store. “Her experience with Sage x Clare has given me a massive helping hand, especially with sampling and production here in India,” says Jemma. “But the funniest twist in the family has been our Dad, Brian. He was always a corporate, suit kind of guy, but is now the man behind Twiggargerie. Some sort of creativeness must run in the family!”

Starting a business in India has of course had many challenges. “It’s the simple stuff: haggling with tuk tuk drivers, couriers, fabric merchants and so on. One day I might pay $10 for cotton, the next it will magically go up to $15. And I can barter until I’m blue in the face and sweaty with frustration and I’ll only get it down to $14.50! It took me two weeks to find envelopes for sending product and a month to get just the right shade of blue. And the electricity always seems to go out when I really need that afternoon cup of tea! I’ve learnt you just got to take what you can get, roll with the punches and be very, very, very patient!”

Soda-+-Stitch-Baby-Blanket-Swaddle-Cotton-Blue-Green-2

The advantages are many too though.”There’s a huge amount of amazing techniques at my fingertips: hand block printing, screen printing, weaving, embroidery, and moments of inspiration that constantly spark new ideas. And at the very least, when you’re in a traffic jam because you’re stuck behind a huge painted elephant, you get a good laugh!”

Soda + Stitch initially launched with a range of textiles that are sold by the metre and children’s bedlinen was added last month. “When I first started designing the prints and patterns, I really tried hard not to look at what was already on the market. I wanted the designs to feel new, playful, colourful and cheeky,” Jemma says. “I think I’ve come up with a debut collection that is just that. All our fabrics are also block printed completely by hand, but in a very different style to the Indian block printing you may have seen before. I’d say we definitely shake off the norms of block printing, without losing out on the texture, quality and colour that comes with it.”

Jemma hopes selling her fabrics by the metre offers something a bit new too, for all the craft lovers and creatives. “But if you’re not much of a sewer, all our textiles can also be stitched into custom or bespoke products just for you and your home. We can also print existing designs in different colours or on different base materials. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, we can create a whole new design that becomes yours and only yours.”

Soda-+-Stitch-Ditsy-Daisy-Doona-Cover-Childrens-Linen-2

Inspiration can be found everywhere. “It could be a bit of embroidery on a piece of vintage fabric here in Jaipur or even the carpet in an airport! I’m a big fan of geometrics, but geometrics that aren’t perfect, and I love hand drawn patterns. I really like to find little marks that come from sketching and playing around, that can be altered and transformed in some way.

“And being in India is a big inspiration. There’s never a dull moment. Life is full of hustle and well, more hustle, loads of colour and plenty of crazy moments!”
