Little Albion Guest House: Sydney’s hottest new hotel?

In the race to create Australia’s most dazzling hotel interior, the baton was passed recently to a new boutique establishment in Sydney’s Surry Hills, the Little Albion Guest House. Formerly a convent and boarding house, the three level space was dark, dilapidated and fronted onto one of Sydney’s dodgier streets but all that is a distant memory with the hotel destined to become one of the city’s coolest establishments.

“The hotel occupies a tiny North-South oriented urban infill site in a densely built urban environment, and hence it is deprived of natural sunlight. It is sandwiched between two heritage buildings – a former Presbyterian church to the West, which is now a hip commercial office building, and a former school hall to the East, which is now a mixed-use apartment building. All three buildings form part of a heritage conservation area,” says the project’s architect Terence Yong.

“We introduced new internal plans and guest room layouts whilst retaining and amplifying the existing building’s unique heritage features, and reinstating its lost features. This results in new, character-themed guest rooms that eschew formulaic interiors – they feature a cool mix of heritage and contemporary details that are true to their own DNA and that of Surry Hills,” says Terence.

Designed by Connie Alessi and Cressida Kennedy, the interiors are truly spectacular – opulent and elegant, they haven’t left a detail to chance and manage to combine art deco and seventies elements with aplomb.

The 35 guest rooms feature bespoke detailing such as custom designed art deco inspired door hardware and solid walnut bedheads, green onyx desks, leather desk chairs and steel and brass open wardrobes.

The bathrooms were carved from solid marble blocks and feature custom brass tapware, bespoke designed vanity frames with Elba Stone tops and custom art deco inspired mirrors. Hand-painted Moroccan feature wall tiles round out the eclectic mix.

“The interiors remind one of the different eras that the existing heritage building has gone through thanks to its art deco, mid-century and retro-inspired spaces. The portraits in the stairwell of the building remind one of the once significant figures in the local area history too,” says Terence.

“The building is capped with a North-facing, beautifully landscaped secret rooftop garden with sweeping views of the city,” says Terence.

“The aesthetics are about engaging memory – making memory and provoking memory,” says Terence. I for one, can’t wait to make my own memories there on my next trip back to Sydney. Just, wow!

Très chic French homewares pop-up in Surry Hills this weekend

When Aaron Cameron followed his heart to Paris after meeting his French husband in Sydney, he never imagined he’d also fall in love with the city. But he did, quickly! So combining his love of design with his new love of Paris, he formed Studio Ombre, a homewares and interior design studio (with offices in Paris and Sydney) focusing on great design and exceptional quality.

Abstract 50 Rose Eteinte Arc de Triomphe 1000

With an ultra-modern collection of bright cushions and chic art prints (normally available strictly online), this weekend — for one week only — Studio Ombre will be hosting a pop-up shop in Sydney.

Transforming Blank Space Gallery in Surry Hills into a magasin éphémère (that’s French for pop-up shop) Studio Ombre’s new range will bring their Parisian design aesthetic to the inner city with their 100% French-made homewares.

Geo 50 Aquamarine Manly 1000

With four graphic cushion designs, each comes in two sizes and four colourways, and is made from 100% polished cotton percale woven in France. Constructed by well paid, experienced artisans who work in excellent conditions, the highest standards are maintained at each stage of the manufacturing process, ensuring true French quality.

Fleur Bright Pivoine and Blue Sage Styled 1

Also on offer are three art print designs, in one size and two-to-four colourways. Printed on 100% cotton 308gms archival rag paper in Paris using UV resident inks, each comes with a stamped certificate of authenticity.

Xray 60 Night Blue Gem Green Pipers Brook 1000

Studio Ombre’s first ever pop-up shop at Blank Space Gallery runs from (this Saturday) 14-to-20 November. Join them for a glass of champagne and a macaron on launch day from 4-to-6pm, or visit throughout the week from 10am-to-6pm.

Paramount transformation offers Mad Men-style luxury offices

Paramount by The Office Space is something else: a beautifully conceived, creative office environment complete with concierge service to handle all your business support needs. This new shared office model certainly raises the benchmark in corporate offerings to a whole new level.

ParamountBar_Woods Bagot Paramont Office

The landmark Paramount building on the edge of the Sydney CBD has been treated to a high-detail refurbishment at the hands of The Office Space Group, transforming it into a highly covetable 22-suite workplace for design-savvy business people. It was conceived and designed by partners Boris and Naomi Tosic, who led the charge for quality shared office spaces over a decade ago with a multi-floor office building in Reservoir Street, Surry Hills. The modern suites at Reservoir by The Office Space have since hosted and supported over 400 businesses, many over extended occupancies.

“I am passionate about the craft of creating beautiful things with precise functionality,” said Boris, who is also a keen art collector. “With Paramount, we wanted to achieve a decidedly modern space that merged seamlessly with the existing heritage-listed joinery of the building. The hand-crafted solution relies on traditional joinery and artisan skills and honours the building’s heritage, while exploring finely-honed design and functionality.”

Domenic Alvaro, Principal at Woods Bagot, was engaged to work alongside Boris, himself head of high end office fit-out specialists, Elan Construct, on the highly bespoke project. With the exception of the integrated desk phones and Walter Knoll Lead chairs, everything in the suites has been custom-made. Original Art Deco elements have been highlighted during the interior’s reimagining, with materials including American Cherry and Oak panelling, limestone, marble and goats-hair carpeting creating a cohesive narrative of discrete luxury that is in harmony with the building’s defining architecture and modernist ideals.

Exterior_Woods Bagot Paramont Office

“We created the original Office Space in Surry Hills to provide a quality working environment and support services for small-to-medium sized businesses who were seeking a compatible space in which to work, and particularly for those more at start-up stage,” said Naomi, who manages leasing for the group. “For them, a larger scale office commitment was impractical, as was working from home, and the pick-up rate from the get-go clearly illustrated the demand was there.”

More recently, conversations with established business players seeking a separate space beyond their core business interests for a breakaway or satellite work model, for fly-in fly-out executives, or those perhaps wishing to downsize from a long-held office set-up, led the Tosics to create this distinctive and new working model. The result is an entirely bespoke offering at the highest level, the former Paramount Pictures building representing the ideal location and aesthetic for this new pillar of their business.

Paramount_TheOfficeSpace_PaulMcMahon_lowres_16

“We have had a longstanding love affair with this iconic Surry Hills building and we felt we could do something really special with the heritage-listed site to build on The Office Space story and produce something extraordinary,” said Naomi.

Beyond the exemplary architecture and interior of the Paramount suites, details like Marc Newson for Noritake glassware and floral arrangements by Hermetica provide stylish touches. A considered selection of Australian and international artworks from the Tosics’ personal collection is exhibited throughout the common spaces and offices.

BoardRoom_Woods Bagot Paramont Office

Paramount has 22 individual suites and offices of varying scale and configuration, with several of the private suites having already been snapped up by the likes of Vince Frost (Vince Frost Design), as well as a leading global advertising agency. All tenancies include full concierge services, as well as access to a large and fully equipped boardroom, separate smaller meeting room and bar/kitchen facilities to rival the finest gentlemen’s clubs in Manhattan. In an era of colourful and at times gimmicky office fit-outs, the luxury and elegance of Paramount by The Office Space channels a particular period of masculine and high-end corporate office design reminiscent of New York in the ‘60’s (and more recently celebrated in TV series Mad Men).

Paramount_TheOfficeSpace_PaulMcMahon_lowres_20

This is an office environment like no other in Sydney, boasting a level of attention to detail that will not easily be eclipsed in a very long time. “For targeted and practiced business professionals not wishing to compromise on a high quality working environment, or polished support services to match, Paramount most assuredly provides the solution,” said Naomi.

Exhibit Interiors shift their focus to furniture in new Surry Hills store

Already a well-known name in the homewares world, Exhibit Interiors have decided to shift their focus onto furniture as they launch their fourth store, in Sydney’s Surry Hills.

From One Angle
“It was a natural move for us to open a store that focused more on furniture,” says owner Mark Gower. “I’ve always believed that it’s possible to offer original, well-made furniture at reasonable prices. We are really excited about the new store — a space dedicated to displaying furniture.”

Fornasetti Wall

Mira Desk and Matching Chair

The 12-year-old brand, which already has two stores in Melbourne and one in Sydney, have created a significantly different feel in their Surry Hills showroom. Offering up clean and contemporary designs, with an abundance of textures like natural oak, marble and animal skin rugs, the showroom shines the spotlight on eclectic objects, ceramics and textiles from all over the world, yet still keeps with the brand’s philosophy of sourcing contemporary and affordable pieces with soul.

“We would ultimately like to become a source, where interior designers and aspiring homemakers can come to find something beautiful,” explains Mark. “We want to supply furniture that’s affordable, original and ready for delivery.”

The new store is at Shop 1-2, 23-33 Mary Street, Surry Hills.

shelf / life, ethical design for everyday living

Yesterday I visited a lovely homewares shop called shelf / life in Sydney’s Surry Hills. It’s not in a location where you’d stumble across it so I wanted to tell you all so you can make a special trip!

Owner Jess Ibbett is a former interior designer with a passion for sustainable design. “As a homewares fanatic with a healthy appetite for design blogs, I became aware that my favourite designers all crafted their wares with deliberate environmental consideration and/or employed sustainable production methods,” she says. “Thus, born from a desire to showcase a collection of my favourite designers’ offerings, and the exciting prospect of establishing a retail environment that introduced Sydneysiders to products handpicked according to our own ethical considerations, my husband and I opened shelf / life at the end of 2009.”

The launch of The Home, Cleo photoshoot and a trip to Project 82

Wow, yesterday was a big one and I have the blisters to prove it. In the morning I visited Project 82 in Surry Hills, which is about to turn two! More on this later in the week but I thoroughly recommend a visit. They’re in Fitzroy Street (number 82, would you believe it?!). Then at lunchtime I was off to ACP in Park Street for a photoshoot for Cleo magazine. My story about how I took blogging full-time will be in the January issue (out in December). I had my hair and makeup done and it was lots of fun. Everyone was lovely and it wasn’t half as painful as I thought it would be. After all, I HATE having my photo taken! Then in the evening I stopped by the launch party for The Home (which used to be called Dalani) where it was great to catch up with Mr Jason Grant and hear all about his book, which is almost finished and out next year. THEN I met my girlfriends for dinner. PHEW. Today I’m just meeting my accountant…

David Met Nicole is closing: 20% off stock

The bad news is that Surry Hills institution David Met Nicole, a favourite of many stylists for props, is closing as the owners head home to London. The good news is they’re offering 20% off stock until they close in a few months’ time. I’ll miss seeing their fabulous things on the pages of magazines.
