Vintage coastal décor: shipped worldwide from Noosa

After a decade working on super yachts, sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean, Sally Oulton returned to Australia, became a mother and found herself living in the hills behind Noosa. “I was looking to create a business around the sea and through that process discovered a love of coastal homewares,” says Sally.

But with so many purveyors of ocean themed wares, Sally knew she needed a point of difference which is how the idea for her furniture and homewares business, Coastal Vintage, emerged. “I had a lightbulb moment when I thought about the possibility of selling old wares like my Nana and Uncle had in the UK. I then decided to combine coastal and vintage pieces,” says Sally who opened her business six years ago.

Initially opening two days a week (to fit around her daughters’ daycare schedule) and operating out of her garage, the business now has its own warehouse, trades six days a week, ships worldwide and is staffed by a crew of five. “We also open every day over the holiday breaks as many of our Instagram followers visit Noosa and want to come to the store,” says Sally who has over 40,000 Instagram followers.

The store’s eclectic mix includes vintage nautical pieces, paddles and fishing gear, as well as sustainable coral, clamshells, glass floats, lobster pot buoys, custom made light fittings and brass hardware. “We love old rustic pieces juxtaposed against a freshly painted VJ panelled wall. We love the mix of old and new, and the layers of texture and personality that only comes from a curated collection,” says Sally who finds that many clients are seeking a special piece to add character and warmth to a new home or renovation.

As well as being an agent for the range, Sally uses Jolie Paints to breathe new life into vintage life rings and fishing buoys, as well as to create custom painted paddles and oars. She also hosts workshops showing people how to use the product.

Coastal Vintage has a fascinating array of wares

Unsurprisingly, many of Sally’s finds have found their way onto to cruise ships, into Hollywood blockbusters, houses in the Bahamas as well as beach shacks and Hampton’s style homes. “We’ve had some pieces in The Pirates of the Caribbean, the latest Elvis movie that is being made, an ABC show and many hotels and restaurants,” says Sally.

A pair of antique paddles, found in Indonesia, are going to be displayed in a Norwegian cruise ship that is currently being built, while another pair of paddles will be hung in a newly renovated Hilton hotel in the US.

Locally you’ll find Sally’s wares at Sydney’s Clovelly Hotel and The Boathouse in La Perouse, plus the Lord Byron Hotel in Byron Bay. “Paspaley Pearls sourced hundreds of small glass floats for an amazing display at Melbourne’s Crown casino recently too,” says Sally.

The range is sourced across the globe (everywhere from Australia to Indonesia, Japan, France, UK and the USA), through a process that has unearthed many family heirlooms; three of which have made their way back to their original owners, via Sally.

“One time, I found a lovely old photo at a market of a family on the beach in Pittwater. As soon as a customer saw it on Facebook, she recognised her ancestors and it is now in her home. Those stories give me goosebumps,” says Sally.

As for her favourite products, she’s a big fan of the giant clam shells and the aged brass mermaid handles which can be found at the aforementioned Clovelly Hotel. “I had one clam shell that was over 200 years old and had been in the same family for over a century. It arrived at the original owner’s grandparents’ home via horse and cart.”

Currently coveting: Vintage nautical homewares

In late 2016, after working for almost 20 years in retail, Angie McIntosh decided to pursue her own creative dream, Merchants of the Sea. “Creatively unfulfilled, and unhappy with the large company culture, I had felt ‘trapped’ for many years until I reached a point where I knew I had to focus my energy into something that would inspire me and bring me joy. I believe that Merchants of the Sea had existed in my heart and mind for many years, and is part of my creative DNA,” says Angie.

With two arms to the business (prop hire and Angie’s original designs), Angie was initially inspired when styling her own home in the small coastal town of Kiama, New South Wales. “Living in a coastal home, we were always looking for pieces that reflected a relaxed, coastal lifestyle,” says Angie who shares her home with her husband and two small children.

“I prefer to style with authentic old nautical items. Objects that make you ponder what history they’ve had, what stories they could tell and that wear a patina that can only come with time. For me, there’s a romance, drama and magic quality that the sea conjures. It has been the source of boundless stories of adventure since the beginning of time and has always captured my imagination,” says Angie.

Items are sourced all over the world at auction, clearance sales, markets, estate sales and online too. “Many of my vintage pieces come, quite literally, from across the seas! I am inspired by my imaginings of a bygone era and old merchant trade days – a sensory experience of colour and texture!” says Angie.

“I love searching for unique vintage nautical pieces, that can add an instant talking point in your home and sharing them with my online followers, finding them a new home, adding a new chapter to their story,” says Angie. Popular products include vintage surfboards, timber oars, vintage anchors, life rings, glass buoys and cane lobster pots,” says Angie who sells her one-off pieces on Instagram.

And while Hamptons style homes, coastal abodes and beach homes seem the obvious fit for Angie’s wares, the pieces wouldn’t look out of place in just about any space. “Although our brand has a definite nautical vibe, we come across such a diverse range of wares that can suit many types of interiors. These include provincial or country homesteads and we sell to a lot of collectors of curiosities too,” says Angie.

“My greatest satisfaction comes from demonstrating ways to integrate vintage pieces in a contemporary setting to give it story, character and personality. I love challenging the idea some people have that vintage and modern can’t mix,” says Angie who recently released her own range of vintage inspired flags, burgees and pennants. “It was extremely gratifying to imagine and create the designs, and then have these designs well received,” says Angie who creates bespoke pieces too.

As for the prop hire side of the business, Angie carries a range of ephemera from a 1940’s teardrop bondwood caravan to a pair of 1880’s church windows – all of which are available for hire by stylists or even people hosting functions or events. “I also source unique and specialty items on request,” says Angie.

The Tabletop Project day 5: interior stylist Mr Jason Grant

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

Jason and his dog, Sophia

“Christmas for me is a time to relax and unwind, I like to keep things simple and not too Christmassy,” says Jason Grant, who styled the Painted Rail Dining Table.  “My Christmas table setting is like my own decorating style: relaxed, laidback and casual.

“Of course it’s colourful too with a touch of my two favourites — nautical stripes and a little bit of nature. I love incorporating nature into all things that I do and have used blue spruce, a type of pine, as my touch of Christmas as decoration on the table (from Pearson’s Florist). I love that it’s classic Christmas with a twist. I love to customise and to use what I already have. I made these paper placemats from some artist paper and some spare paint and used irregular brush strokes to create the stripes in my favourite shade blue.

0026_DSC4338-2

“I love combining timber with strong bright colours I think this is a very Australian style and a Christmas table setting is the perfect time to add a pop. I have used the Hay Kaleido trays from Yellow Bungalow. Beeswax candles Queen B are perfect for the table. I love scented candles but not at the dinner table. Candles always add a little magic. I love to serve my favourite prawns, pavlova (which I love to decorate at the table with summer berries) ginger beer and champagne. Remember to leave room for these and not overcrowd your table . I like a layered but streamlined style table.

Jason, you're making us hungry!

Mexicana meets copper at Have You Met Miss Jones

There really is something for everyone in the latest range from Have You Met Miss Jones with several key trends covered off. “We have created this new collection from inspiration around the world,” says creative director Jen Sampson. “We always try and offer a diverse and global perspective to our ranges, taking cues from the simplest of materials like wood carving and clay pottery; artisanal handicrafts that are as old as time and applying these to today’s trends and colour palettes.

Group18[2]

“The ability to create new and unique looks from across our portfolio of products is what gives the team here at HYMMJ the biggest thrill. We love pulling together existing pieces and adding chic new items, creating a whole updated story that is collected and curated, just like our customers do at home.”

Group22[2]

Using the fun and colourful Mexican Fiesta as a leaping off point, they played with saturated reds, pinks and yellows. The Mexican look includes an Otomi and Aztec print series that have been popular and a new skull lamp which is flying off the shelves.

Then kinfolk trend sees earthy tones of wood, browns, green, faux bois, bone china and a new metal range of copper and enamel boxes. “The copper range is selling out as fast as we can re-stock it!”

DP041_0302[2]

Jen says they always like to have some kind of nautical presence in their ranges as it’s a key look within Australia and reflects our casual lifestyle. “This season, we have added a popular anchor vase and whale lamp which people are loving. We have played with new materials and developed a rope cage lamp that can be hung or knotted on a surface. It imbues a casual industrial luxe which is always trending.”

A first look at Freedom’s latest collection, styled by Jason Grant

Nothing beats switching things up at home to herald the warmer days and the abundance of sunshine. The new Freedom Spring/Summer 2014 Collection is a culmination of colour, print and pattern. A true celebration of Australian interiors.

“Freedom has embraced everything there is to love about colour for the new summer collection,” says senior homewares buyer Korryn Bentley. “Remember those pastels we all grew up with — reminiscent of 20c worth of mixed lollies? We’ve grown up and so has the palette, but it’s just as sweet. We know colour makes an interior a happier place to be, this season we have plenty of options.”

Stylist Mr Jason Grant, whose second book is released later this month, styled these gorgeous images. He said: ““I’m loving the latest collection from Freedom, a welcome burst of colour and pattern for the warmer months. Mixing geometric patterns, bright pops of colour and gelato shades with classic shapes and timber pieces, the collection is fun and fresh.

Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 8.44.16 PM

“Of course I love anything nautical or tropical and there are anchors, stripes, oars and palm leaves everywhere! The collection is perfect for adding some summer vibes and relaxed, laid back style to your home.”

Four new decorating stories embody the spirit of an Australian summer. You can choose how you play with colour, but Freedom have helpfully done the groundwork for you to get you there:

Sorbet Dream

A soothing palette of pastel tones and grey makes for a home that is beautifully serene. When designing with simplicity in mind, every detail has been introduced with precision and beauty. Whether it’s the artisanal feel of contrast glazing on the Talleo vessel or the graphic statement of the Boyd rugs neon on neutral stripes, it’s the little things that count.

Sunseeker

Balancing classic and contemporary elements, Sunseeker delivers a fresh energy to interiors. Whether it’s the Saltram adjustable stool that combines the honest of timber with industrial form or our solid elm Constable dining table with mixed bench and chair seating, Sunseeker makes home life less ordinary. Earthy terracotta also features heavily, especially across the Terra vessel collection that has been handmade in Portugal.

Colour Fiesta

Making a strong statement with ease, Colour Fiesta gives a bold new direction to the warmer months. Start with the classic understatement of a hero neutral piece like the Benson Modular Sofa and build your look from there. Dip into new shades with everyday pieces, like the Pompidou table or the Epping nest of three tables, each given a playful splash of colour.

Island Life

Relaxed yet eye-catching, the living is easy with Island Life. From rope and natural weaves to bottle green glass; shipshape, nautical touches also steal the scene. Look no further than the Demijohn table lamp for proof that a little high sea inspiration can still be contemporary and urban. Rounding out Island Life is a range of new season cushions that have been rendered in vintage inspired prints. Case in point? The Hula cushion, it’s fun and unique and will get noticed for all the right reasons.

New collection pieces are arriving weekly from today. Shop online.

What to consider when furnishing and decorating a holiday rental

As we prepare for the unveiling of our Palm Beach apartment project at the end of the month, I asked Emma Blomfield of Nest Designs what special considerations need to be made when furnishing a holiday rental.

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 4.46.55 PM

Durability and being easy to clean are 2 of the top, and less pretty and creative priorities when embarking on your holiday rental. “You never know who will be renting the apartment and when you might have families with children there for summer holidays, you can’t be sure how it will withstand a visit from sticky fingers or what will happen during a game of hide and seek,” says Emma. “Materials that should be avoided are things like glass top tables that aren’t secured, veneers — they are soft, dent easily and don’t withstand heavy duty cleaning agents that the cleaning company might use – and high gloss MDF as it scratches easily and ages faster.”

When it comes to flooring, hardwearing is key. Tiles, sisal carpet and timber floors are best. “There are loads of wool carpet options too that are commercial grade and come in a huge range of colours to suit your decor.”

flooring apartment

Emma also had to think about easy and regular cleaning between guests. “I’ve chosen bench tops that have flecks of taupe and brown so any scratches or spills won’t be obvious. The sofa is scotch guarded to prevent spills staining and the rug is a jute material, making it easy to shake out to clean. Sisal carpet is good for disguising sandy footprints.”
