Everything on the doorstep: the 2022 move towards local sanctuaries

Jason Granziera, in-house stylist at Lounge Lovers, shares his predictions for 2022 living.

Get grounded

Lounge Lovers research shows that a quarter of us want our homes to feel grounded as our spaces have become our sanctuaries and a place to escape from day-to-day life. Many of us are keen to get back to nature, as shown by the growing movement towards 20 minute neighbourhoods, with everything we need for a good life within this distance. This desire will be emulated with all-natural rugs, indoor plants around the home, cooling hues and calming designs.

Opt for comfort

The way we use our homes has changed significantly over the past few years, with the majority of us spending more time at home than ever before. In fact, research shows that prior to the pandemic around 20% of all businesses had staff working from home; this has now increased to 44%.* As such, design pieces that allow for comfort and functionality will be key as we continue to spend more time at home, both working and entertaining throughout 2022. To support this theory, recent research conducted by Lounge Lovers found that more than one in three Aussies (34.54%) want their home to feel relaxed and one in four (25.92%) want it to feel cosy, grounded and connected to others.

Inspired by the coast

According to Lounge Lovers research, Australians are most influenced by coastal living design styles (22.21%). We expect to see lots of beach-inspired items including Hamptons-style furnishings, woven baskets and muted blues and greens which bring calm beach feelings into living spaces. Our Haven sofa in Mornington Ivory (pictured above) is the perfect lounge room centrepiece for beachside homes.

Very Peri

Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2022 has been revealed as Very Peri; a bold, purple hue that you’ll be sure to see popping up across homewares via beautiful cushions, stunning sofas (check out our limited edition Bronte above) and linens. You can incorporate this on-trend tone into your home by adding splashes of colour with statement walls and furniture pieces in the new ‘it’ shade, or with throws or cushions for something less permanent.

McMullin & co. grow up with latest curvy collection of timeless pieces

McMullin & co.’s largest ever collection, HESTIA, pays homage to the Grecian goddess of home and architecture. The series of furniture and objets d’art for the home is a curation of consciously designed pieces inspired by intrigue, diversity and warmth of the feminine form.

After a year of disruption, the constant that is a home and those close to designer Alice McMullin, made her re-evaluate how she saw the world, ultimately inspiring her to new art forms, mediums and history.

The collection represents the maturation of the four-year-old brand, where the aesthetic is wholly captured by creative director Alice’s vision to challenge and elevate her authentic approach to functional, deliberate yet charismatic designs. A sense of permanence can be felt throughout HESTIA, where each piece is created to outlast the human tendency to be distracted. Their diversity and intrigue of the feminine form are apparent, and encompass individual design elements that allow each piece to stand as its own.

The hero of the collection, the Ida chair, is the perfect representation of a new design process, combining a contemporary design with primary and sustainably focused raw materials to conjure a piece that is part sculpture, part furniture.

Bismarck House, where the pieces were shot, was the perfect backdrop with its architectural curves and whitewashed walls.

“The past four years since we launched McMullin & co. have been a purposeful (and at times unexpected) journey as we navigated a growing process to determine who we are and our authentic approach to product design,” says Alice. “It is a new discovery of a design process which allowed ourselves the freedom and most importantly, the time, to immerse ourselves into a conceptual place unbounded by singular process – to be challenged and inspired.

“From there, I’m incredibly proud of our collective of product designers, ceramic artists and specialist furniture makers who helped develop these ideas from drawings, textile and raw cuts into a singular form.”

Ex competitive rider launches equestrian inspired luxury homewares store

Growing up in Tasmania, as a competitive equestrian, Sydney’s Kate Berry has a long association with horses. “I’ve always had a connection to horses and the equestrian lifestyle. I gave up riding for my career and ended up in London working in luxury PR,” says Kate. But it was after returning from the UK, when Kate was doing some freelance PR for an equestrian company, that she noticed a gap in the market.

“I had to source some beautiful gifts for some clients. There was nothing in Australia that was of any quality – that really reflected that beautiful, aspirational equestrian style,” says Kate who subsequently launched an equestrian themed online homewares store in 2017, Just Gorgeous Things.

Just Gorgeous
Just Gorgeous Things’ new Parramatta store features five rooms of equestrian themed wares

“I’ve always loved the high-end equestrian aesthetic as seen with the likes of Hermes, Gucci and Ralph Lauren, but could never find beautiful but accessible pieces with as much appeal in the Australian market,” who has just opened a complementary bricks and mortar store in Parramatta.

Just Gorgeous Things

The five-room emporium is filled with horse themed furniture and homewares and services an equestrian clientele as well as a more general one. “I have found it fascinating how equestrian style resonates with many people that aren’t horsey. It’s a style that works in all sorts of homes from Hamptons to French provincial,” says Kate.

Just Gorgeous Things

As for the store’s location, Kate explains that it is central to her equestrian clients that come in from Dural, Richmond, Windsor, the Southern Highlands and more to purchase her wares.

The brand’s leather furniture pieces are some of its most popular items

The business also has a styling arm where Kate services equestrian as well as regular clients. She started doing high-end stables and viewing arenas before moving the aesthetic into homes. “I have high-end equestrian customers and get to work on incredible projects. Recently I put a beautiful wine cellar into an American style stable block in Queensland.”

Kate is hoping that the Paramatta store is the first of many with future interstate stores within her sights. “I love retail and homewares and would love to expand the business. Ultimately, it has grown to what it is today because people are drawn to that gorgeous, aspirational equestrian style.”

Incy celebrates 10th birthday with re-launch of the Spindle collection

To celebrate Incy Interiors’ 10th birthday, founder Kristy Withers has relaunched the brand’s iconic Spindle bedroom range. Previously sold between 2015 and 2019, the Spindle collection was a common fixture in celeb homes and even made it into our publisher Jen’s son Sebastian’s baby nursery!

The collection consists of the Penny Single Bed ($999), Penny King Single Bed ($1,199), Jude Bookcase ($599) and Jack Side Table ($499), all handcrafted from New Zealand pine.

Flashback: Jen used the Spindle change table in son Sebastian’s nursery back in 2015 in a custom aqua colour. It has followed him through various bedrooms since as a dresser, until deciding to share with his brother Charlie this year.

Followers of the leading Australian kids’ furniture brand have long been requesting the return of the popular design and it seemed fitting to re-launch the range during a milestone year. The Spindle bedroom range extends upon the classic Spindle Georgia Cot and Lucy Change Table.

Faced with challenges from health restrictions during the pandemic and lockdowns, Incy returned to its roots to pull off this product launch, working outside locked down LGAs. The campaign was shot in Orange NSW, where Kristy and her family live.

“It was serendipitous that due to Covid lockdowns we were forced to do the photoshoot in regional NSW where we did the original Spindle shoot,” said Kristy.

40 years of Freedom furniture: a look back

From beanbags to designer sofas, the story of Freedom has reflected Australia’s own coming of age in furniture and homeware design. This year, the iconic Australian brand is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Freedom was an Australian retail pioneer, bringing design in-house well before other Australian furniture retailers. What started as one store selling outdoor and pine furniture in the colourful early 1980s, is now a household name. In 2021, Freedom has come full circle, once again designing and curating in-house to create beautiful products for our unique Australian lifestyle.

Freedom first opened its doors in 1981 in Sydney, and within a year, sales boomed. This success allowed Freedom to open its first Melbourne store in 1984, followed quickly by a new logo and a new look, resulting in sophisticated and stylish catalogues winning the brand a bunch of advertising awards.

Freedom’s progressive approach saw it develop its own in-house design capability in 1987 as well as forming arguably one of the first visual merchandising departments in Australia, challenging the stronghold European and American styles and fashions had on the Australian industry.

Visual merchandising became integral to Freedom’s philosophy, and as such the ‘casual living’ theme was born.

The late 90s were a time of expansion for Freedom – the company went public in
1996 and launched Freedom Kitchens. The following year, Freedom launched its first homewares store and by 1998, it had a store in every state.

In 1999, internationally recognised designer Ken Cato designed Freedom’s new logo
and freedom.com.au went live, bringing the furniture retailer into the digital age. The early 2000s saw Freedom achieve a record of $400million in sales, with 80 stores, while in 2003, it began its hugely successful partnership with TV juggernaut The Block, which continues to this day.

2004 saw Freedom return to private ownership. It continued to lead the industry in 2006, launching new branding and embracing digital and social media as the core brand strategy, joining Facebook and Instagram in 2011.

In 2020, Freedom announced another rebrand, including the current crisp logo, renewing a focus on design creating a new, dedicated design and creative team to
spearhead the transformation. In many ways returning to where it all began – designing and curating beautiful products inspired by our relaxed and contemporary Australian lifestyle.

A lot has happened in 40 years for this Australian retail success story.

If it’s good enough for Martha Stewart: Outer furniture arrives in Australia

Californian outdoor furniture company Outer is finally available in Australia! Outer’s sophisticated, durable and sustainable outdoor living products are well loved in the States, with famous fans including iconic homemaker Martha Stewart and electronic music duo The Chainsmokers. Well, if it’s good enough for Martha…

Outer Teak collection

Outer offers collections in wicker, teak and aluminium, all designed to withstand harsh environments while incorporating sustainable practices to reduce fast furniture. Their All-Weather Wicker collection and 1188 Eco-Friendly Rugs are made from recycled plastic bottles. The Teak collection is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and for each teak product sold, Outer works with farms to plant at least 15 new saplings. Meanwhile, the Aluminium collection is guaranteed to withstand over 10 years of outside use.

Another innovative product available is the Bug Shield Blanket, helping us say goodbye to being eaten alive by mozzies this summer! These lightweight throw blankets are enhanced with odourless insect shield technology based on insect repellent found in plants such as chrysanthemums.

Outer Bug Shield Blanket – Striped Plaid. RRP $150

Outer was founded in 2019 by Jiake Liu and Terry Lin, with the mission to bring back the joy of spending quality time outside. Despite a climate that allows for outdoor living year-round, some research shows Aussies spend up to 90 percent (lockdowns aside) of their time indoors.

“We are excited to formally introduce Outer to Australians, and to give people an opportunity to reconnect and enjoy the outdoors,” said Terry. “Every choice we’ve made, from our product innovations to our shopping experience, has been to improve the lives of our customers. We saw a stale industry ripe for innovation, and we wanted to create sustainable furniture that made it easier to live life outside,” said Jaike.

L-R: Co-founders Jiake Liu and Terry Lin

Conscious design and innovation are at the heart of everything Outer does. The company developed their own proprietary fabrics that are both eco-friendly and stain, fade, and mould resistant. They also introduced the famous OuterShell, a patented built-in cover that rolls out in seconds to protect cushions from everyday dirt and moisture.

Outer’s debut collection was constructed by Jiake’s family-owned factory in China and this close relationship and partnership means that products are carefully crafted, while also ensuring factories maintain fair wages, safe working environments and benefits for employee families and their children.

Outer use what they call ‘Neighbourhood Showrooms’- customers are able to browse local showrooms online and make an appointment with a local host to see, sit on, and feel products in person. Hosts are compensated whether or not the visitor ends up purchasing. Those interested in applying for Australia’s Neighbourhood Showroom program can apply here. To become a showroom host, customers complete an application and receive a 10% discount on their order. After a stringent vetting process, those accepted receive discounts on products, early access to new collections, and the ability to help develop new Outer products from the ground up.

This may surprise you, but BIG W is our pick of new homewares and here’s why

Sponsored by BIG W

While you may not immediately think of BIG W as the place to find our pick of this season’s top homewares, the retailer has proven that style doesn’t need to mean expensive.  Seriously, the latest Spring homewares at BIG W look way more expensive than they are! I’ve already shared a lot of them with you on Instagram but today I’m making sure what I tell you about is available to buy online right now (as I write this!) so don’t delay!

I also had a chat with BIG W’s senior design manager for Kids & Home, Gupreet Panesar, to get an idea about how a new collection comes together. “As a team, we don’t believe that creating something that can be family-friendly and affordable means we need to sacrifice on style or variety,” she told me. “As such, we look to capture the trends we are seeing globally, and bring them to life with designs across textiles and furniture that can stand the family test, and make quality pieces at a more affordable price.”

I found out it’s not a case of starting from scratch each season, but more of a rolling evolution. “We are continually thinking about the customer mission and living our purpose: we make a real difference for families. When we break that down it provides us with direction. Mums and dads are looking for a product that is on trend but is easy to care for and can be tossed into the family wash time and time again. Value is so much more than price.”

With everyone having spent so much time within their homes this year, nesting, finessing and resetting, softened colours, playing with textures and trends from nature, are all highlights. “This is coupled with our renewed sense of outdoor living,” Gupreet says. “I really love our coordinated outdoor ranges that enable picnics, casual backyard BBQs and a little panache to your life outside.

“Our customers want to create a space where they feel like they are on vacation and our range does just that. The “staycation” trend is what we used to develop key pieces in the range.”

There’s a whole range of matching items in the outdoor range such as beanbag covers, beach towels and outdoor cushions from $19.

When it comes to refreshing your home for Spring, Gupreet says the simple swaps are often best. “New bedding, towels and rugs all provide a new look and feel in the home if you want to switch it up a bit. Adding a pop of colour, texture or prints are the best ways to spruce up your space and create that feel of change for the new season.

These bargain muslin throws are perfect for spring on the bed or sofa and come in heaps of colours

“If patterns and pops of colour aren’t in your design palette then we have dry florals, natural materials, indigo blues and more classic fabrics to uplift your space.”

Also worth a mention is all the stylish storage. I believe you can never have too many baskets for chucking things in (especially toys at our house!) and these, starting at $16, are both great.

Another favourite pick of mine are these zipped linen cushions covers in 55cm and 65cm sizes, which are a steal at $15 and $19.

Our pick of what’s new at IKEA: October 2021

This month’s IKEA launch (how is it already October?!) is all about bringing the beauty of nature indoors. The look contrasts the cosy wool textures and natural elements typical of Scandinavian design with a rustic, industrial style.

There’s two gorgeous rugs under $250, celebrated British designer Ilse Crawford has created bonfire-scented candles and the table with storage ladder is one of the most versatile pieces we’ve seen in a long time; perfect for today’s ever-changing and multipurpose homes.

Here’s our pick of what’s new…

ÄPPLARYD two-seater sofa

ÄPPLARYD is a sophisticated new sofa family – available in different sizes and colours – made with calm and comfort in mind. Its steel legs and clean lines give the sofa a balanced silhouette, while its soft cushions and tactile covers make it perfect for whiling away evenings indoors.

The rich cushions use pocket springs that mould to your shape for extra comfort, as well as being long-lasting and using less foam. What’s more, its covers are made of recycled polyester – a better option for the planet. Stylish, serene and taking steps to be more sustainable. From $799.

BEHJÄRTAD scented candle in ceramic pot

The new season is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere indoors, with elements borrowed from the natural world. A member of the BEHJÄRTAD range in collaboration with British designer Ilse Crawford, this bonfire-scented candle captures the mood perfectly. In ceramic containers, available in muted tones of dark brown and grey. $6 and $10.

HÅVERUD table with storage ladder

It’s like a pop-up work-from-home spot!

As our living spaces in urban settings get smaller, we need furniture that adapts to our specific needs and requirements. Be it for dining, studying, preparing food or your latest craft project, the HÅVERUD table is designed with versatility in mind.

With a counter-height table and a metal storage ladder, its flexible, compact design makes it a smart option for smaller living spaces, and multifaceted homes
and lifestyles alike. You’ll be inspired to take up a new hobby and get to work! $159.

SVÄRDBORG handmade, flatwoven rug

IKEA rugs have always been amazing value. With its chunky wool texture, the new SVÄRDBORG will not only provide cosiness underfoot but it’s a good-looker too. Handmade by skilled craftspeople in India and Bangladesh with good working conditions and fair wages, each SVÄRDBORG rug is a one-of-a-kind beauty. It has a tactile, pebble-like appearance, flecked with neutral-coloured yarns that have been added by hand into the weave. $249.

VAMDRUP flatwoven rug

IKEA pay homage to traditional Scandinavian handicraft with the new VAMDRUP rug. Made of warm and durable natural fibres– 100% wool, with the warp made from 100% cotton from more sustainable sources – the pattern was designed by Maria Vinka. Inspired by the historical “Munkabälte’’ weaving pattern, this eye-catching rug offers a contemporary update on tradition with bold motifs in warm and neutral tones. Handwoven by skilled artisans in India in organised weaving centres with good working conditions and fair wages, each rug’s pattern is unique in its own way. This ensures that no two products are the same. $249.

STORSLINGA LED chandelier

Sure to become a contemporary classic! With a clean, black metal frame and distinct lighting design, STORSLINGA, a new eight-arm pendant lamp, offers a contemporary update on the chandelier. The globe-shaped heads are made from high quality plastic resembling glass. The LED light emits a clear and even glow, making it suitable for atmospheric dining areas, as well as everyday workstations. The lamp’s slim design makes it a perfect choice for smaller living spaces. $95.

The Block effect: how being on TV can shine a spotlight on small business

As longtime fans of The Block, Australian furniture manufacturer Toni Briggs Brown and husband Simon Brown dreamed of getting their product on the show and set out to make it happen this year. Here’s how their kitchen stools made it into Mitch and Mark’s kitchen on Sunday night and their first order came through before the episode even finished!

Image via David Cook Photography/The Block Shop

TH Brown is a family-owned furniture manufacturing brand that was launched 110 years ago by Simon’s grandfather Thomas Howard Brown. The couple relaunched the brand in 2017 with the objective of reissuing the iconic designs that Simon’s family created from the 1950s through to the 70s. The Danish Barstool is their most recognisable piece. It was designed in Adelaide and is still manufactured and hand finished there to this day.

After years of seeing the contestants refer to The Block Shop for inspiration and to purchase items to style their homes, they set about trying to get stocked. “I thought they were part of Channel 9 and it would be more difficult, but the team at The Block Shop from customer service to marketing, guided us through the process to make it really easy,” says Toni.

Once filming started, Toni asked if they could get their pieces put forward to contestants by the Block Shop. The morning after the Sunday night when kitchen week was announced, the couple got a text message from customer service at the Block Shop saying that there was a contestant interested in featuring the Danish Barstool for their kitchen. On the episode you can see Mitch scrolling online, then finding the stool saying, “these are magnificent!”.

Then the call came from Mark and Mitch directly, wanting to know if they could supply and deliver the product by Friday. As each stool is handcrafted, the team worked overtime to create them within two days. Not wanting to risk them not arriving, Simon packed up the car and drove from Adelaide to Melbourne to deliver them in person!

Simon Brown delivers the TH Brown stools himself!

“Seeing the style of the home and the beauty of the House 2 kitchen that Mitch and Mark had designed, it was a great fit for the Danish Barstool to create that extra layer of luxury and design form. It sat perfectly in the space, which is testament to the duo’s design skills and that the classic look of the stools transcends trends and is simply a timeless design,” he says.

And it didn’t take long for “The Block effect”, which so many other small businesses have benefited from over the years, to take hold! “Our first order hit the The Block Shop while the show was still airing, and orders and multiple enquiries have continued to come through,” said Toni yesterday. “The coverage we received both on the show and online has been fantastic for our brand and a celebration of Peter’s timeless and iconic design.”

Mitch, Simon and his brother Justin Brown and Mark at The Block site

TH Brown pieces become family heirlooms. Each one is certified, quality controlled, has a 10-year warranty and comes with a serial number as they are collectibles. “We’ve heard that families have original pieces from the 1950s they’ve inherited and have ordered new stools from us recently to add to their kitchen, creating a set,” explains Simon.

“Seeing our stools on The Block is a pinch me moment, to be honest,” Toni says. “We talk about our brand being 110 years old and three generations, but we only relaunched the TH Brown brand four years ago. For a small Australian furniture brand to find themselves on The Block and have Mitch and Mark love the design and include it in their kitchen is an amazing opportunity.”

The full range of TH Brown kitchen stools and coffee tables are available through the Block Shop, and stockists Australia wide.

Armchair travel: Amy’s New York furniture & homewares picks

As old blue eyes said, New York really is the city that never sleeps. From the galleries and museums to the architecture, shopping and incredible food, it’s hard to get much rest in the city – especially as a tourist with limited time on ground. And while a Big Apple trip is off the cards for the foreseeable, here’s my selection of homewares that might just transport you there – even for just a New York minute.

MOMA Mondri vase: In a city brimming with incredible museums and galleries it’s tough to pick a favourite but MOMA will always have my heart. With all the New York art greats housed under one roof (think Pollock, Warhol, Basquiat and Haring), it is a must-see destination. The gallery houses a couple of Piet Mondrian pieces also and this fabulous vase takes me right back. $153.

MOMA Mondrian vase

Jonathan Adler: The New Jersey born designer got his big break in New York when his first pottery line was picked up by Barneys. The opening of his very first standalone store in Soho ensued and the rest is history. And while his brand now encompasses furniture, textiles and everything in between, it’s his ceramics that I still find most covetable.

West Elm staggered glass 3-Light adjustable floor lamp: A New York loft wouldn’t be complete without a statement floor lamp and this beauty is on my want list. $499.

West elm standard lamp

Anthropologie: A New York trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the eclectic homewares and fashion emporium Anthropologie. Thankfully Aussies are able to get our Anthro-fix online and these are my top two picks. The cotton throw is by Marcello Velho (the whole range is rather gorgeous) and the decorative chain link comes in on-trend terracotta too.

Chrysler Building art prints: When it comes to New York skyscrapers the Empire State Building gets a lot of attention but the Chrysler Building is my hands-down fave. It’s Art Deco styling is a sight to behold at close range (the sun-burst like detail and gargoyles in particular) and these prints do a good job of capturing the building’s magic.

Temple & Webster Odessa shelving unit: Another enduring classic that arose from the New York loft aesthetic, this industrial style shelving unit is the perfect spot to showcase your favourite books and trinkets. $469.

Multimillion dollar locker business launches in the US

Mustard Made, the homewares startup by sisters Becca and Jess Stern which was launched at a Sydney trade show in 2018, is about to launch into its third country, the United States!

Sisters Becca and Jess Stern launched Mustard Made in 2018

The cult homewares brand coveted for its signature colourful lockers, has grown from a lightbulb idea to a multi-million dollar business in just three years.

“Mustard has made a name for itself across the Australian, UK and European markets, and with a growing global interest in our products through the power of social media, it’s the perfect time to bring our brand to US consumers,” said Becca.

Since launching at a trade show in Sydney, with two products and six colours, Mustard has grown on all fronts. The brand now offers eight products in 10 on-trend colours, with a team of 15 located on three continents and serving customers right across the globe. Revenue has doubled year-on-year, each year since launch, a growth trajectory that is tipped to escalate ever further with Mustard’s entry into the US, the traditional home of the high school locker.

“Mustard has always exceeded our expectations, and our prediction is that the US will be our biggest market yet,” said Becca. “Mustard Made is a family business with a big heart and big dreams, and this launch is a huge milestone for us. Our community has been asking us to come to America, and we’re so thrilled to now be able to offer our products direct to our US customers.”

The sisters have reimagined the traditional locker to create a new breed of homewares for the home and workspaces. The idea was sparked by Becca’s love of vintage furniture and a need for practical storage. The lockers come in a range of brights, pastels and neutrals that complement any space, along with a growing collection of coordinating accessories.

King Living: Exuding a simple, casual luxury, the latest outdoor range from King Living draws on some of the brand’s most popular indoor pieces. “Our new pieces share their aesthetic with indoor furniture, but are designed to withstand the harshest of climates and full sun and wind, and remain internally dry even during the heaviest downpours,” says King Living global head of product design, David Hardwick.

Melbourne decoupage company in the IKEA spotlight

The art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper to it, and finishing with special paint effects, decoupage has had a resurgence in popularity of late and Melbourne’s Michelle Tither has been front and centre. Launched in 2016, Mint by Michelle initially began as a furniture upcycling business but soon became so much more.

“I had always been creative and wanted to explore that creativity professionally. I wanted to see whether I could make a living doing something that I loved to do and to see what I was capable of both artistically and in business,” says Michelle.

This decoupaged cupboard, by Joyita, was made with one of Michelle’s designs

And while Michelle started out simply upcycling furniture, it wasn’t long before she became known in the space and was overrun with commissioned work. “Ultimately, that lead to running workshops, stocking products, setting up a shop and manufacturing my own products. Since then, the world of furniture art has opened up and I find myself smack in the middle of it – a manufacturer, distributor, retailer and artist,” says Michelle.

In its current incarnation, Mint by Michelle is a one-stop shop for anybody who is interested in furniture flipping and upcycling with advice, products, practical hands-on experience, after care and free tutorials on offer. “Our courses and workshops are very well regarded and it’s not unusual for us to have people travel from interstate to attend,” says Michelle. Online shoppers can purchase everything from decoupage paper to brushes, Annie Sloan paints and finished furniture pieces by Michelle.

Part of Michelle’s success is that she was the first manufacturer to produce large-scale decoupage images suitable for furniture and since then, almost every other furniture art supply business has followed suit. “Our papers are still the best quality – we have set the bar with our secret ingredient specialty paper and printing method and ink. And we are very proud that our papers are made and manufactured in Australia which is no mean feat!” Incredibly, Michelle’s range is now sold through 300 stockists in more than 30 countries.

And it was through one of the brand’s European distributors, Belen in the Netherlands, that Mint by Michelle had worldwide exposure via IKEA recently. “Belen entered a competition with IKEA and was one of 12 artists chosen to showcase her work on the IKEA website and socials,” says Michelle.

Belen painted and decoupaged an IKEA piece using the Mint by Michelle ‘balloons’ paper to great effect and it’s currently residing in a Netherlands IKEA store where it will remain for the next five weeks. “It’s a fabulous piece and we are so terribly excited to have Mint and Belen recognised by such an enormous company!”

White sofa with kids and dogs? Sure! Here’s how.

White sofa vs. life. Why white is a good choice when you have kids and pets.

Common sense says no, but you’re still pining over that white sofa. Kids. Pets. Wine. Pasta. Messy (but fabulous) life. You’ve probably decided a white sofa isn’t practical. But white sofas are actually very family-friendly. The key? Slipcovers are essential.

They’re enjoying a revival – and for good reason. Slipcovers prioritise both form and function. Had a spill? Simply throw the cover in the wash. Dirty paws all over the couch? Toss it in the washing machine. The perfect low-maintenance sofa that looks and feels luxurious – without the stress of regular upholstery? We’re in.

“The beauty of a slipcover sofa is the ease, particularly for families. We love a kid-friendly couch. There’s less stress when you know you can easily throw the cover in the wash,” says Abbey Hart from James Lane.

“We’ve seen a significant rise in customers wanting the flexibility of a slipcover sofa. We have two classic styles available – depending on your comfort level – Serena and Como. Both feature slipcovers crafted from Belgian linen to create a luxurious look and feel that’s ideal for high-traffic spaces. Plus we offers three sizes of ottomans, cushion covers and extra cushions to really create your own sanctuary.”

Chic, understated interiors are on your wishlist? Not only do slipcovers alleviate the stress around maintaining your sofa, aesthetically they create a sophisticated yet relaxed look.

But what happens if you get tired of the neutral look of a slipcover sofa?

“As life becomes increasingly complicated, interiors are shifting to be more pared back. We’re not seeing this look going away anytime soon as the world looks to create a sense of calm in the  home. The sofa is the hardest working piece in the living room and the largest investment – a neutral design is going to provide longevity and deliver the best value to you,” Abbey adds.

“If you want to switch up your space – it’s simple. Slipcovers can be replaced in a new colour, or using your sofa as the base element, we love using cushions and throws to build and layer textures and colours in to create a fresh new look.”

While a white sofa can feel daunting, they can be the best option for a bustling household of kids and pets. A slipcovered sofa provides the ultimate in flexibility and helps create a living room that’s not only stylish, but inviting and easy to be in.

3 reasons to consider a white sofa with kids and pets

  1. Easy to maintain: Anytime there’s a spill, or you want to freshen up, the slipcovers can simply be put in the wash with the day’s laundry. Hello hygiene!
  2. Luxe look: Create a modern Hamptons aesthetic with a linen slipcovered sofa. Timeless design will never date, creating a stylish yet streamlined look for your living space.
  3. Love it for longer: Rather than having to have a sofa professionally cleaned or even reupholstered, the slipcover option means a more cost-efficient approach to your living room – and less tension!

James Lane are a family-owned Aussie business, and take pride in creating timeless, elegant pieces to uplift your space, turning your house into a home with beautiful interiors you’ll love for a lifetime.
