How to decorate a nursery

2020 was a year full of twists and turns with the surge of COVID, mandatory lockdowns, and social distancing. But for some it also presented an exciting silver lining. The chance to be a part of the mini baby boom in 2021 – Generation C!

Whether you are first-time parents or veterans welcoming a new addition to the tribe, one of the top priorities is to set up the perfect nursery.

Henley design manager and mum of two, Vicki Gillingham, talks us through nursery trends and must-haves to ensure that the nursery is a tranquil oasis for the baby and calming workplace for mum and dad.

Colour me this

Vicki’s first rule is to colour in the nursery light and neutral tones.

“While there may be a temptation to go with the pinks for a girl and blues for a boy, selecting white, creams and very pale hues are also a great palette to keep the room feeling airy and light,” said Vicki.

Serenity and calmness are high on the list of objectives of a nursery, as you want it to be a tranquil oasis for the baby to call home. With the vibrant colours of the everyday world already visually stimulating the baby, a neutral foundation will ease them into a state of peace and help with the slumber.

“With a neutral foundation, you may like to add some gentle tones such as light greys or lattes, keeping that relaxed and softer feel to the room.”

Let there be (natural) light

“Natural light sifting through the room is such an inviting experience to the senses,” Vicki said. “Avoid bold colours and heavy fabrics in curtains and use soft ceiling lights which you can adjust their setting.”

To let as much natural light in without turning into a sunroom, consider dialing up the natural light by having sheer curtains or blinds. Blockouts are also ideal for daytime naps.

Vicki also recommends setting the cot or bassinet away from the window to avoid draughts and adding a soft light lamp for the nighttime nappy changes. After all, nobody likes harsh lights shone on them as if they were on an operation table!

Playing with texture

Soft, natural fibres should be at the forefront in a nursery so mum, dad, and baby feel cuddly and comfortable in this space.

Some examples Vicki provides include soft rugs on the floor, textured blankets, super soft cushions, and cuddly stuffed toys. Keeping in mind with the colour palette advice, these items should be in soft, neutral tones, and also made of natural fibres like organic cotton.

“Textured wallpaper might also be a lovely touch in neutral or earthy tones but might need to be updated as baby gets older!” Vicki added. “Consider instead adding some wall art that exudes a sense of calmness and composure.”

Fit it out with furniture

All efficient workspaces and cosy bedrooms need the utilities to amplify the experience and the nursery is no different. Parents always need to be prepared when it comes to taking care of their baby. So it is important to be well equipped on the frontlines of dealing with a fussy baby!

“Create a mum or dad corner, featuring a comfortable chair for feeding or cuddling,” Vicki said. “Consider adding a footstool so you can put up your feet as well as a jug of water, and even a snack.”

Essentials for the nursery also include a change table with ample storage and a comfy cot or bassinet away from the window and a comfortable chair for feeding or cuddling for mum and dad.

It is good to consider a book nook boasting picture storybooks and open baskets for toys, clothes, and nappies. But it’s also important to keep the nursery decluttered so it doesn’t overstimulate the baby and pose any dangers.

Vicki Gillingham is design manager for Melbourne-based home builder, Henley.

Interiors Addict’s Lauren Ellis shares her beautiful nursery

Lauren Ellis, our fabulous Interiors Addict TV presenter, is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first child later this month. In this post, she shares the nursery she has lovingly designed for him.

lauren ellis nursery portrait

Designing a nursery for my first child, a baby boy I’m yet to meet, was always going to be the most magical and rewarding challenge. With each kick and every brush stroke, I thought of him sleeping in his cot or playing with the elephants that now adorn his room.

IMG_1238

I’m a huge craft and DIY fan (my first ‘job’ was designing and selling gift cards to local businesses) so from the outset I knew the nursery would be full of homemade pieces. It also features pops of navy, my favourite colour, which being a minimalist I’ve paired with grey, tan and white.

The starting point for the nursery was the large inbuilt bookcase, which I lined with cardboard, covered in striking navy and grey material. It’s the first section of the room the eye is drawn to along with the sloped, high ceiling and window. I also considered painting the back of the bookcase or lining it with wallpaper but loved how easily the cardboard cutouts could be removed as my little boy grows and his room evolves.

IMG_1414

On each shelf – along with white Ikea boxes with DIY tan leather handles – are books and trinkets that all have a story to tell. Most are gifts from family and friends (it’s incredible how generous people are when you’re pregnant) along with my husband’s and my first teddy bears, Peter Rabbit plates and a vase from our wedding.

The chest of draws on the opposite side of the nursery (a hand-me-down from my mother-in-law) was in desperate need of a makeover. I painted the timber drawers white, lined the inside with wallpaper and made the DIY leather handles with a touch of gold, to match the boxes in the bookcase. Above, Ikea wall hooks are spray-painted navy to balance the colour scheme. The cloud coat hangers (so adorable!) are from Talo Interiors, while the wall hanging is another DIY addition.

IMG_1270

IMG_1510

Given the room’s unusual shape, I knew the cot and rocking chair had to take centre stage. I fell in love with the white, Scandinavian cot with its rounded corners as soon as I saw it. The grey rocking chair and linen is from Adairs, the navy throw rugs from Pottery Barn Kids and my mum found the gorgeous giraffe in a little boutique store close to home.

IMG_1448

The first items I purchased for the room were the stunning giraffe, elephant and zebra prints from The Animal Print shop, displayed above the change table. I found the prints on Instagram and had my eye on them long before I fell pregnant. To dress up the picture frames I sprayed little brackets gold and super glued them to each corner. The bunting is made from Christmas baubles, re-threaded with thin, gold rope.

IMG_1486

To complete the room I added a white rug (which we already owned) to soften the timber floors. On its own, the cotton rug wasn’t quite enough so to balance the look I made a grey cloud to place in the corner.

Styling my little boy’s nursery has been a labor of love that’s brought me so much joy. I hope my son, who is due in two weeks’ time, loves the room as much as his mum. Now all it needs is him.

IMG_1343

Thanks so much for sharing, Lauren. We wish you all the very best for your baby’s safe delivery and cannot not mention how gorgeous you look! Jen

Review: Maxi-Cosi Euro NXT convertible car seat

Sebastian was fast outgrowing his capsule, so when we got the opportunity to road test (indulge the pun!) a car seat I jumped at the chance, especially when I heard about the Maxi-Cosi Euro NXT’s super safe credentials.

maxi cosi euro nxt 1
Sebastian happy in his comfy new car seat

As a first-time mum, lots of people will tell you that a lot of baby stuff is a waste of money or something you’ll never use and it’s very true! That said, if there’s one thing you’re not going to take any chances on, it’s a car seat. Traveling by car suddenly makes you feel a whole lot more vulnerable when you have your precious firstborn cargo on board. Oh, does it ever!

Maxi-Cosi is definitely a brand I associate with quality child seats and Sebastian’s capsule happened to be the Maxi-Cosi Mico, which was compatible with our Bugaboo Bee3 pram. Seb was definitely looking a little too snug in his and with the weather getting hotter, he wasn’t enjoying car trips as much as he had been. We knew it had a limited lifespan as our little man got bigger by the week! In the much more spacious Euro NXT he is a happy little passenger once again!

Gee, this seat is comfy! Think I'll have a nap (again!)
Gee, this seat is comfy! Think I’ll have a nap (again!)

My absolute favourite feature about this seat, which is easy to install (although I definitely recommend having it done professionally) thanks to the Isofix latch system, is that it can stay rear-facing (the safest way to travel) until your little one is up to 30 months old. You then change it to forward-facing and will fit your child until they’re up to four years old (or until their shoulders reach a certain height). So the investment is a longterm one.

When it comes to safety, which let’s face it, is about the only thing you consider when buying a baby car seat, the GCELL™ patented next generation, crash absorbing technology provides a crumple zone for enhanced side full body protection. Air Protect™ Superior Side Impact Protection is specifically designed to shield your child’s head from side impact forces through the precise release of air. GCELL™ and Air Protect provide the ultimate in side impact protection.

Ease of use is also key and this ticks those boxes too. The harness is easy to adjust in one step without having to remove the seat from the car, and adjusting the seat base and head rest as your child grows is also simple.

When it comes to comfort, Seb has given it the thumbs up (or I’m sure he would if he knew how to). He certainly doesn’t wriggle around looking annoyed anymore! And now that it’s getting warm, the ‘cool baby’ wicking fabric might have something to do with that too.

maxi cosi euro nxt 3

And then there’s practicality. Hello machine washable covers! Say no more…

It also comes with a mat which goes underneath it to protect your car seat. Being that our “soccer mum car” is brand new and we are still under some vague illusion we can keep it clean with a child, this was very welcome!

To top it all off, this car seat is made right here in Australia, which is always a pleasant surprise in this day and age.

The Maxi-Cosi Euro NXT is available from leading baby stores for $649 RRP.

For more information.

Disclosure: Maxi-Cosi gave us the Euro NXT car seat in exchange for a review. Positive coverage was not guaranteed.

Not-a-mummy-blogger: the birth and breastfeeding

When I first started penning this post, it was called something like the reality of motherhood, one month on. That says it all really, as Sebastian is now nine weeks old and I just realised it still wasn’t finished! What I really wanted to share here were some warts and all thoughts on motherhood as a first time mum. Because it really isn’t all about cute baby pictures on Instagram. While having a baby is without doubt the most amazing thing my husband and I have ever done, we’ve never loved anyone more or felt more blessed (and that’s an overused word these days), having a baby is no bed of roses and the more people share honestly about it the better for all new and existing mums, I say!

Sebastian
Our Sebastian

If I’ve learnt one thing above all others it’s if you have a plan, bin it! Or at least make peace with the fact you will not have as much control over things as you’d like and you’d better learn to roll with it if you want to stay sane and not fall victim to feeling like you’re failing.

Let’s start with the birth. Damian and I attended Calmbirth classes because my OB suggested this was the best option if I was hoping for a drug free delivery. I wanted a drug free birth but was also open to the fact it might not go that way and I really had no idea what I was in for. That was my preference, not because I think drug-free is best or I’m a martyr; at its simplest I thought women have been doing this for a very long time, our bodies are designed for this and I’d prefer it to be as close to how nature intended as possible (while taking advantage of top 21st century medical care!).

I found Calmbirth useful, especially the science side of things, but being someone who struggles to sit still or switch off (meditation is my idea of hell and I sometimes find a one-hour massage too long), I did find it challenging! My friends call me the eye roller because I can be a bit of a cynic so it took all my self control to focus on the Calmbirth experience and to get the most I could from it, and it was useful. That said, when it came to the reality of having my baby, he decided he was quite comfortable and going to be fashionably late. I was booked in for an induction (the one thing I wanted to avoid and had been told to try and avoid) for the Monday when I would be 10 days overdue. But my OB was 90% sure I’d have him before then.

To cut a long story short, Monday came around and despite my best efforts to persuade him otherwise, Sebastian didn’t start labour (did you know it is the baby that actually starts labour? I know!). So off we went to the hospital at around 9pm. I was disappointed my labour was now going to be 100% in hospital as I’d really hoped to stay at home as long as possible, and I really didn’t want an intense, sped up process, but that’s what I got. To cut a long story (well actually, not long at all!) short, things happened very quickly and I had an intense three-hour labour. While I still tried to hang on to my ideas about no drugs, after almost drowning in the bath due to trying to inhale all of the gas and air, I opted for an epidural.

Even in intense pain the little voice at the back of my head was going “wow, that Calmbirth stuff went out the window fast!” The next hour or two is a bit of a blur but I was well aware of how loud I was and how embarrassed I was about that! But you really have no option but to give in to what is happening. The term wild animal does spring to mind!

Anyway, the epidural didn’t work properly because things were so far along but it did take the edge off, and on the plus side, it meant I was very aware of what was going on when the finish line came around. Yes, it hurt (I mean, how can it not, frankly?!) but I felt in control for the first time during all of it and was able to push at the right times and be very much in the moment. My OB arrived at the last minute and when he handed me Sebastian it was surreal and amazing but I didn’t bawl my eyes out as I’d imagined. I was too shocked and tired I think. I had skin to skin with him on my chest for an hour before he went anywhere and just lay there gazing at him, marvelling at how different he looked to what I’d expected. Damian and I watched the sunrise over Sydney from the birthing suite window and tried to catch our breath. After planning to “stay north,” my amazing husband had ended up being very involved in the labour, even holding one leg back while the midwife held the other when it came time to push. Full on! He found watching his son come into the world amazing and not at all gross or scary. So, it just goes to show, you can plan and plan, but when it comes to birth, you don’t have all that much say in what happens. And as my OB says, whoever invented the concept of a birth plan should be shot…

Did I forget all about the pain as soon as he was born? Not at all! Would I do it all again for the end result? Of course! Am I beating myself up about taking pain relief? No way!

breast milk

There is a lot of information out there about breastfeeding and even more opinions. Like the drug-free birth thing, it was my preference to breastfeed and I really hoped I’d be able to. I have no issue with people bottle feeding and I personally think mums are put under far too much pressure with the feeding thing. The midwives in hospital were just incredible when it came to trying to get us off on the best foot and Seb did seem to struggle a bit. I’ve never had my boobs held by so many people but you just go with it. Like everyone says, once you’ve had a baby there is no more dignity! Colostrum was collected in a syringe, he was given formula top ups (the horror!) for the first 48 hours because he couldn’t hold his blood sugar, and we persevered.

It got better, he was feeding, and by the time we left the hospital he was back to birth weight (high fives!) and we’d dropped the formula. When we got home, things seemed to be going pretty well and at his first nurse checkup at home he had continued to gain weight. But breastfeeding was never particularly easy, smooth or enjoyable. While it wasn’t painful, neither was it this blissful and peaceful bonding experience you’re led to imagine. Sebastian fussed on and off the breast crying and sometimes screaming. I called the Australian Breastfeeding Association hotline for advice and we talked about fast letdown and block feeding, tried Infacol for suspected wind and so on and so forth.

There was so much crying, not just while he was feeding but in general. But part of me thought he is just being a baby and babies cry, especially brand new ones. Suck it up because everyone tells you being a new mum is hard. But I kept remembering the offer to go back to our hospital and see the lactation consultants until he was six weeks old and I rang and made an appointment.

The midwife who helped us was amazing (someone else wants me to get my boobs out? Sure!). How great are midwives? I’ve never met one I didn’t love and most of them I’d like to adopt as my mum. His weigh in proved the last thing we had suspected: that he hadn’t been getting much milk in. He had gained only a small amount of weight over the previous two weeks. All that crying? Hunger, pure and simple. My heart sank but I was so glad I had asked for help when I did. To cut a long story short, after trying a few things, it turns out my darling little son just isn’t very good at latching. He just doesn’t get it!  Faced with two options: giving up or expressing my breast milk (of which there’s no shortage) and bottle feeding it to him, I went with the latter.

While there are definite advantages to this (his dad being able to feed him for one), it is sooooo time consuming! When I’m not hooked up to my “milking machine” (I’ve already upgraded to a double pump because time is precious), I’m washing and sterilising bottles or feeding him from them. But again, I’m not beating myself up about it and I’m just getting on with it and trying to make the best of it. Because that’s all you can do as a mum: your best. I’m grateful I’m able to breastfeed my son, if indirectly!

There is milk bloody everywhere. I swear I need more changes of clothes than Seb due to milk splashes. Oh, the glamour! As one of my followers rightly pointed out recently, whoever said don’t cry over spilt milk was clearly not talking about breast milk! There have almost been tears but mainly just swear words.

I’m happy to report that Sebastian is fattening up like a good’un and got top marks at his recent paediatrician visit! And what else matters really?

Perhaps the biggest lesson from this tale is to not be ashamed to ask for help.

Well, I think that’s enough TMI (too much information) warts and all for now. I have so much more to share with you on babies, great products I’ve discovered, cool presents he’s been sent etc, etc, but I’ll save it for another day as I have a baby to feed!

Stylist Erin Michael creates birth announcement app

When stylist Erin Michael wanted to announce her baby, Jagger, to the world, she didn’t send the usual SMS or personalised photo card, she created this super cool birth announcement.

Jagger Original BA

It went viral, was pinned all over town and much imitated. Now clever Erin has seen the potential to turn her idea into an app and I think it’s genius!

It is so simple and easy to use. Rather than recreate your own photoshoot (as someone who recently gave birth, I can say that would definitely be at the bottom of my priority list!), you can introduce your baby in style to your friends and family virtually the minute they are born with Birth Announcement App.

Template3

All you need to do is choose a template, enter the baby’s birth details, take a photo or use one from your camera roll et voila, you are ready to share the exciting news of your baby in a unique and stylish way. Share instantly on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, send an SMS, email, or save to camera roll to print later. Erin, who was a contestant on The Block in 2010, printed her birth announcement photo and wrote thank you messages on the back of them to her loved ones.

App screenshot1

“No newborn? Don’t worry, you are not missing out! You can retrospectively upload any photo from your camera roll and enter the birth details of your older children. Or maybe create one to pop in a frame as a gift for a friend who has just had a baby. They are also great for photo memory books, so you have a cute little reminder of all the important details to cherish forever,” Erin says.

App screenshot3

Birth Announcement app is available to download free from the Apple App store, with in-app purchases. One gender neutral template based on the original is free to use and other templates cost $4.99 each.

An Android version (yay!) and many more templates are planned for the coming months.

What do you think? I think this is going to go OFF! Download for free.

Introducing baby Interiors Addict, Sebastian

Of course it was only a matter of time before I shared some photos and a little more about the birth of our little bundle Sebastian! So rather than completely #babyspam Instagram, here are a few snaps for those of you who have sent your well wishes and asked after him, for which we are really grateful. We have been so touched by everyone’s interest and thankful for the many beautiful gifts he has been sent. Thank you all!

In hospital

Our little man, who is two weeks old today, was born at the San in Wahroonga, which was an altogether amazing healthcare experience. We were so well looked after and guided and had the pleasure of meeting countless wonderful midwives (these women — and one man — are amazing!). Kudos too to our brilliant obstetrician Peter Wood. Sebastian was 10 days late and I ended up being induced. He arrived a little over three hours later at 3.55am weighing 3.07 kilos or 6lb 12 in old money. To say things moved quickly after he kept us waiting, would be an understatement! Phew! But the main thing is, he arrived safe and well. When he was placed on my chest, my first thought was “I think I may explode with love,” followed by how much he didn’t look like a mini version of his dad, as we had both expected. We are still trying to work out which of us he looks most like and he changes a bit every couple of days.

The next day: tired, happy and lippie back on!
The next day: tired, happy and lippie back on!

4122015225216Everyone tells you what a life changing, overwhelming and amazing experience having your first child is, and you imagine it must be, but the enormity of it doesn’t hit you until you’re actually in the position of being a mum. I feel like the luckiest woman alive and if it’s at all possible, I love my husband even more now that he is the father of my child, and he is proving to be a fantastic daddy who was amazing during labour. We got home last Saturday, just in time for my first Mother’s Day. Having lost my mum as a young child, this is usually quite a sad occasion for me. But this year, being a mother myself for the first time, it was really special.

4132015173442

At the weekend, my dad arrived from the UK to meet his first grandchild for the first time. We are looking forward to spending lots of quality family time together while acting editor Olivia runs the show for a while! We have been out and about for a few outings and survived and Sebastian is feeding and sleeping well (which is of course all relative when you’re talking about a newborn!). As L-plate parents, Damian and I are definitely learning as we go!

Thanks again for all your well wishes and gifts. We are all feeling the love!

Preparing for baby: my checklist

Sponsored by BIG W

Having your first baby can be pretty overwhelming. Trust me, I know! At six months pregnant, I am starting to reach the slightly panicky ‘Have I got everything? I have no idea what I’m doing!’ stage! Although well-meaning people will tell you all your baby needs is milk and love, it’s a lovely sentiment that’s not strictly true (hello, nappies?!). But I was really excited to discover that BIG W has you covered for pretty much everything, from packing your hospital bag all the way through to decorating the nursery!

BIGW05021_4_0028401

BIGW05021_28_8242542_b

BIG W is one of those shops I tended to visit for slightly more random items like Sodastream gas cylinders or door stops. I really had no idea how much baby-related stuff they also sell, but got very excited when Damian and I wandered through their baby section last week. For example, maternity nightie for nursing after you have the baby? Tick! One more thing for the hospital bag (Emerson Maternity have maternity bras and singlets too). And great clothes for the baby of course (we couldn’t resist a few outfits) that are fantastic value for those fast-growing little bodies (including Peter Morrisey Baby). Heaps!

BIGW05021_6_0016290

If you’re looking to deck out your nursery without spending a fortune (and provided everything is safe and functional I see absolutely no issue with that!), then you can get your crib, change table and more at BIG W too. All have Australian safety standard compliance and rigorous QA testing, whilst being classic and easy to accessorise. And I don’t think I need to tell anyone they sell toys, do I?!

Down to the more practical stuff, you’ll also find breast pumps, bottle sterilisers, bottles, bibs, cot linen and baby monitors in store. Plus car seats, prams, high chairs, bouncers and activity mats. When I said they had you covered, I really meant it! They even sell those handy organic baby food pouches, as well as formula, so you can get everything in one stop. And nappies! Don’t forget the nappies! You’ll find all the well-known brands too, like Avent, Steelcraft and Fisher-Price.

BIGW05021_30_8276635When it comes to bathing your baby, they have the bath and the bubbles! If you’re pregnant too, you might like to get in some light reading to make you feel a little more prepared for your new arrival, from their collection of bestsellers like Save Our Sleep, Raising Boys and Up The Duff.

So if you’re looking for a one-stop-shop for your baby and new mum needs, you can’t go wrong with BIG W.

Check out the latest BIG W baby catalogue.

WIN

We have three BIG W nursery starter kits (containing a onesie/pyjama set (depending on size), a 3-pack of Dymples vests, a pair of booties, a cot or single bed sheet set and a toy) to give away worth $50 each. To be in with a chance of winning, complete the form below by 5pm on Friday 20 February 2015. Open to Australian residents only.

What to expect from The Block 2015: Triple Threat?

We can’t wait for it to be back and, judging by how many of you read our Block roundups and how many new readers we acquire when it’s on, you do too! Love it or hate it, you tune in, right?! The Block is great for Interiors Addict and we can’t help getting hooked, even when we get a little over the challenges and the drama at times. You can’t beat those room reveals. Bring back Sunday nights and judging controversy, I say!

So, what do we know about the next series, coming early next year, so far? It’s in Melbourne again (boo!) and it’s called Triple Threat. That’s because the new couples will be up against three pairs of former contestants: Bec and George, Matt and Kim and Dee and Darren (can I get a pantomine-style boooooooooooo?!). The public’s reaction to the choice of former contestants making a comeback has been mixed to say the least, especially with Dee and her less then friendly comments (remember when she called Shaynna a bogan?!) fresh in viewers’ minds! But this is reality TV, let’s not forget that. If everyone got on swimmingly that would probably be very dull, despite everyone’s comments to the contrary. I’d put money on many of those I’ve seen commenting on The Block Facebook Page that they will be boycotting the show because of the Double Ds’ return will secretly be tuning in and getting their knickers in a twist!

We haven’t heard much from Matt and Kim recently, although they did appear on their own Domestic Blitz show, Matt and Kim to the Rescue recently and Matt tells me they have lots of exciting things in the pipeline this year. We’ll be sharing one of their most recent design projects on the blog later this week, in fact, so stay tuned! Bec of Bec and George launched her own blog  at the end of 2013 and the popular pair have been busy with their own renovations. Bec also recently announced a style consultant role for Nostra Homes. Of course, both these couples went head to head on The Block Sky High. As for Dee and Darren, they’ve barely had a chance to recharge their batteries since losing Glass House to lovable Shannon and Simon in October.

They’ve started introducing the new couples too. Ayden and Jess are parents of two and he’s a big Scotty fan.

Ebony and Luke are the first ever brother and sister sibling duo on The Block. About time really!

We’ll bring you more as and when we hear it! In other Block news, former contestants Dale and Sophie have had a baby boy called Van and judge Shaynna Blaze totally rocked it with a singing performance at Melbourne’s Carols by Candlelight, looking amazing.

Prepare for more nursery posts: I’m pregnant!

I’m not going to be able to keep it a secret for much longer and, safely on the other side of our 19-week scan yesterday, I have some exciting news to share: I’m pregnant! Interiors Addict is no longer my only baby!

I tried to keep it quiet but my rapidly expanding belly is starting to give it away. And then I got busted a few times on Instagram when well-meaning friends made comments on totally non-baby photos! I took the first one down but then I gave up!

Although I admit to being a chronic over-sharer (that’s why me and social media get along so well) I have felt very private and protective of this little person growing inside me (still totally surreal, by the way!). I didn’t want the world and his wife to know, or to tempt fate. This is pretty much the biggest thing that has ever happened to me so I’m nervous, like all first-time-mums-to-be, I’m sure. I’m also really, really happy and excited!

Yesterday, we had our 19-week morphology scan and bub was looking healthy and perfect (we also found out the gender but as some relatives don’t want to know, I’m not revealing it here!).

As you know, Damian and I have not long returned home from a six-month overseas trip. That was the “before we settle down and have babies” trip. Ha!

I have never taken falling pregnant for granted. Sadly, so many of my friends have struggled to conceive. Why should I be any different? Having a child is a blessing, not a given. That being said, we of course fell pregnant right away, not realising we were flying home to Sydney with an extra passenger on board! And there was I thinking I had THE worst case of jetlag of all time and a weird craving for pretzels…

Less than a week after landing, we found out the good news and then started the longest couple of months of our lives while we kept a big secret from everyone but our nearest and dearest and counted down to the all-important 12 weeks. At this point, we told all our friends but I still wasn’t ready to share it with you guys. There’s tens of thousands of you, that’s huge!

But now I’m finally content to share our happy news and thankfully, I’m also safe to fly to Dubai tonight for what will probably be my last overseas trip for a long time! You’ve lucked out really, because you missed all my whingeing about nausea and extreme tiredness!

What a year I am having! Feeling very blessed indeed.

And yes, of course I’ll share my nursery progress with you! Nothing like a Christmas holiday project…

Kip & Co for babies’ cots!

Kip & Co designers Hayley, Kate and Alex have brought their signature bright, bold colourways and prints to the nursery, giving in to the demand they’ve experienced since launching their much loved bedding label.

The first Kip & Co TINY collection is comprised of six designs in fitted cot sheets and three baby blankets. Three of the sheet sets feature a print collaboration with super cool kidswear label Munster Kids: Munster Leopard, Munster Mash and Munster Camo.

“We wanted to be challenge what traditional ‘baby bedding’ looked like,” the girls said. “Pastels and whites have dominated this market for such a long time and we felt that if older kids were really into their bright bedding, then we couldn’t see a reason why vibrant colours and cool prints wouldn’t work in a nursery as well.”

What do you think? Would you go for a brighter, bolder more fun nursery scheme or do you prefer calm, muted neutrals and pastels?

Real rooms: A stylish nursery that both mum and child will love

Designing a nursery that’s stylish rather than babyish is no mean feat, but one that Shah Bahpyu has certainly managed.

Nursery1

Shah, whose daughter Helaina is seven months old, spent three months creating a contemporary space that was clean, fresh and uncluttered, but also contained some meaningful pieces.

With a soft pink and grey colour palette, her favourite features are the black and white photographs of Helaina’s grandparents, the Helaina in Wonderland art created by her godfather and the pink princess pedal car.

And while it looks beautiful now, it wouldn’t be true home design if there hadn’t been some hurdles to begin with. “I was stuck for ages until I came across the wallpaper, then I knew exactly what to do,” explains Shah. “I find that I always struggle in the beginning to find a jumping off point, but once I find it the rest always falls into place relatively easily.”

While Shah doesn’t currently work in interior design, the process has inspired the possibility of a career change. Now that she’s successfully designed her own, nurseries have become an area of interest, in particular designing a room that is pleasing to both mother and child.

“My husband and I always joked that babies didn’t understand anything and parents decorated nurseries for themselves, but once she came along, my feelings changed. I wanted her to have a great room, and yes I’ll admit I designed the room for me too!”

You can read more about Shah’s designing adventures on her blog Hammer and Heels.

Global interiors weekend reading list: 15.02.12

It seems all my favourite international bloggers are doing exciting things right now (I’m okay with it because I’m going to Europe for 6 months very soon!).

My favourite (fellow) Pommy interiors blogger Mr Bright Bazaar Will Taylor has a BOOK out. How exciting and what a huge achievement. You can pre-order online from Amazon UK or Amazon US (they’re slightly different versions). With the subtitle Embracing Colour for Make-You-Smile-Style you can tell it’s going to be a goodie!

And the lovely Holly Becker from Decor8 just had her first baby, a boy called Aidan, who she introduced via Instagram (how else would a blogger do it?). Congratulations, Holly!

Cot sheets for babies, with a sense of humour

I don’t normally feature much for nurseries and children’s rooms. Until I see something really cool that is! Like yesterday’s Armadillo & Co Junior Collections rugs, and today these cot sheets from Bed Toppings. Their newest design, launching tomorrow, is The Sleep Machine.

It joins the existing Sleep Tips and Nest designs. Designer Sophie Farquhar, who hand illustrates her creations, says: “It creates a fun, interactive environment to make bedtime more fun for parents and little people. I enjoy crafting my designs with lots of sweet little details to discover over time. The Sleep Machine is powered by giggles and features a button for more lullabies or dreams about the moon. Simply press the dial for how many hours you want your little one to sleep!” If only it were that easy, but it’s a bit of fun, eh?
