Darren Palmer on his new Myer range: a “pinch yourself moment”

Darren Palmer was one of the first people I profiled here on Interiors Addict so I have followed his career with great interest (and indeed pride as he has become a friend too). Not content with being a judge on top-rating show The Block, producing stunning interior design for his clients, being an ambassador for brands like Audi and penning two interiors books, he now has his own homewares range with top department store Myer. I was lucky enough to attend the launch last month and am now coveting almost everything for my home (for now, I have the navy linen on my bed and it feels amazing). And there’s a lot of navy here, which pleases me no end! The collection is a true reflection of the man behind it and there’s no surprise he has filled his Bondi home with his own wares (well, wouldn’t you?!).

Darren Palmer says his Myer collaboration is a dream come true

It’s a dream come true for Darren but he still can’t quite believe it’s happened! “A range of product has been part of my plans for several years and I’ve been approached in the past from other partners but I have really sat on my hands and waited for Myer as they were the pinnacle of partnership in my mind. No one has the reach and market that Myer has. They’re a premium, yet achievable brand, and I like to think that is positioning we share,” he says. “It’s one of those pinch yourself moments. I can’t be more grateful than I am right now. It’s the culmination of years of work and development and it’s only the beginning.”

The Darren Palmer collection Tuberose Cotton Sateen Jacquard Queen Size Quilt Cover Set in White $249.95

His first meeting with Myer was in fact years ago. “The timing and the proposition wasn’t quite right. I had to bide my time. So I waited and kept in contact with them, having faith that everything would line up in the right way at the right time. When I joined my management agency, Chic Management, they worked closely with a company that worked with Myer in licensing and they had had several successes with other big brands and well known personalities so I knew I was in good hands. I think we were working together for six months before the Myer relationship started to move ahead again, and when it did, it worked out well and swiftly.”

Just a few of the many gorgeous cushions, from $79.95.

Darren worked with Myer to craft pieces and create a range that reflected both his creative and Myer’s commercial objectives.  “It was a real team effort.”

One of my favourites: The Darren Palmer collection Agate sculpture. $79.95

The range has something for everyone with three pillars:  luxe, coastal and classic. “All the pieces work well alongside each other but also as capsules within the range. Anyone can buy with certainty that what they take home will work and really add life and layers to their home.”

Ombre metallic glass vase, $49.95

And his favourites? “I love the coral (it’s resin, before you ask). I love the Reed Belgian Flax Linen bedding collection, it’s heaven to sleep in. I love the beaten metal bowls but I really love every piece in the range.  The sheets and bedcovers are elegant and timeless, the decorative cushions are highly detailed and embellished. I love it all. It looks fantastic in my house!”

The only challenge was editing the collection and deciding what to keep back for next season.

“The range is really reflective of my style and I have every piece in my house.  My bookshelves are transformed for the better and my bed has never looked more amazing,” Darren says.

The Darren Palmer collection `Reed’ Belgian Flax Linen queen size flat sheets in Grey, Navy, White and Tobacco, $199.95 each

“This is the first of many seasons absolutely. I like to think this is the beginning of the next part of my career so I’ll just say watch this space.”

The Darren Palmer collection is available exclusively at Myer stores nationwide and online.

In another first for the brand, and in great news for linen lovers, John Lewis will manufacture and sell Australian standard sized bedding too. Currently, Australians can purchase UK standard bedding and have it shipped to Australia, but the UK sizing doesn’t fit Australian beds.

Smeg small appliances finally available in Australia

In this job, you get pretty good at spotting what’s going to be popular and I’m convinced these new Smeg small appliances are going to FLY off the shelves. I was lucky enough to attend the launch of these in Milan last year and have been waiting (im)patiently for them to land in Australia. Last week, Olivia attended a glamorous launch in Sydney and ever since we shared pictures on Instagram, our readers have been going mad for them!

Smeg Kettle PG-Toaster P

Smeg say Italian design, award-winning style and enduring performance are the trademark features of the new collection of small appliances – the latest extension to the brand’s iconic FAB retro refrigerators. While we would all love a FAB fridge (I’ve been obsessing over the thought since I was a teenager and still don’t know which colour I’d choose but it WILL happen one day!), they aren’t the cheapest out there. Now, there’s an entry level Smeg option with a two-slice toaster ($179 to $199) through to the space age looking signature kitchen mixer at $799.

Designed in collaboration with Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti of Deep Design Studio, there’s also a kettle ($199) and a four-slice toaster ($199 to $219). Each retro style appliance pays homage to the Golden Age of the fifties while showcasing Smeg’s signature elegance and sophistication. Indeed, the aesthetics of the stand mixer and toaster have already received the GOOD DESIGN Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design plus the prestigious international iF Design Award for 2015.

Smeg Mixer R-Kettle C-2-2

There are up to seven colours — silver, black, red, panna and pastel blue across the range — plus pastel green and pink for the kettles and two-slice toaster.

And while style is always a standout feature of any Smeg appliance, it goes hand in hand with the brand’s commitment to the very latest technology and highest performance. The kitchen mixer, for example, sets new benchmarks in terms of power and versatility. Attributes include 800W high torque motor, 10-speed variable power and the all important soft start (no more splatters when starting at a high speed) and a planetary mixing action to ensure all areas of the bowl are reached. There is also a low-speed front attachment hub for optional attachments such as pasta roller and cutters. A blender, with a capacity of 1.7 litres, an 800W motor and four speeds will be added to the range later this year.

Smeg Kettle PB-Mixer PB-Toaster P

The Smeg kettle is feature rich with quiet-boil technology, soft-opening lid, cord-free swivel base and auto shut-off when the body is lifted from the base. It also has automatic switch-off at boiling point. A variable temperature model will be added to the range later this year.

Toasters include both a two and four-slice model with extra wide slots, reheat, defrost, cancel and bagel settings plus self-centring racks, six browning levels and removable stainless steel crumb tray.

Each of the small appliances features an enamel-coated stainless steel body and has been manufactured to the highest standards. Smeg provides a 12-month replacement warranty on all kettles and toasters, a three-month replacement warranty and five-year full manufacturer’s warranty on all kitchen mixers.

The complete range of Smeg small appliances is available from electrical and appliance retailers nationally from May. The range is already available at Myer.

The new designer SodaStream Source

Did you have a childhood SodaStream? We did. It was white and yellow. I can picture it in my head, clear as day. It came with glass bottles and I was really jealous when our neighbours got one of the first new models with (wait for it) plastic ones! When I got the chance to road test the latest, 2013 model, I had no idea it would look quite this slick!

SodaStream Source

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the SodaStream Source. Fancy, huh? It even has LED lights.
