Considered patterned curtains? Neale Whitaker shares his tips

Window treatments might be the last thing you think about when designing your space but they’re the finishing touch that every room needs. When it comes to curtains, they can make or break the look of a room. Not only do they make a space feel finished, but they have the ability to transform an interior, whether it’s creating the illusion of a higher ceiling, drawing the eye across a room, or framing views to a beautiful vista outside.

Luxaflex has added all-new curtain prints to its collection with nine designs on offer. The patterns are sourced from creative houses across the globe, and inspired by biophilic design, water impression paintings and botanical motifs.

Styles available range from traditional flora designs, such as the Vintage Garden or Fuji Canopy prints, to ones with more modern and bold patterns and colours such as the Peijing range. Multiple colours are available for each print, and the curtains come in various fabrics, such as velvet, faux silk and linen.

Neale Whitaker, interior design expert, says, “Choosing a print curtain is similar to choosing a large artwork or wallpaper. Ask yourself these questions: What statement are you looking to make? Do you want a print that complements your existing colour palette and decor, or contrasts with it? Do you want the print curtain to be the main focus of the room, or be a backdrop to other furnishings?”

If the answer is the former, then Neale suggests a more decorative print; otherwise, softer, more abstract prints should be chosen. “Full-length print curtains will always make more impact than short curtains, and a contemporary twist is to use prints in conjunction with blinds or sheers. Not only will they look beautiful, but the additional layer will protect your print from the strong Australian light.”

Neale is a firm believer in bending the rules when it comes to interior design, and sometimes even breaking them. However, prints should always be considered carefully, as you want them to be a focus of your room.

“Whether you’re installing print curtains or using prints on furniture, consideration must be applied – too many prints will cancel each other out, so it’s about finding the right balance,” says Neale.

When it comes to mixing prints, Neale warns that it requires a skilled eye. His advice is to limit your choice of prints to two to avoid clashing, and opt for contrast. For example, prints with defined tones or simple patterns will blend perfectly with the more decorative patterns. They contrast yet complement each other, especially when linked by a common colour.

Prints can be used anywhere in the home but work especially well in bedrooms. Teamed with crisp white bed linen, print fabric cushions added to the bed bring a relaxing and welcoming feel to your room. To complement the room and grab attention, consider adding the same print fabric to cover an armchair, to finish off your space.

“Australians have long embraced prints – think of our love of brands like Marimekko and Missoni, but it’s great to see a new audience appreciating more complex, decorative prints,” says Neale. “I predict we will be seeing more traditional prints used in conjunction with contemporary furnishings. The contrast will be interesting and exciting.”

These landlord approved hacks are perfect for style minded renters

When renting, your options to personalise your space are limited. You don’t have to paint your walls or remodel the kitchen to have a space that reflects your unique style, however. Genevieve Rosen-Biller has provided her expert tips to make your rental your own.

Swap out blinds and curtains

If you’re renting, it’s almost a given the window treatments will be a little dated. The good news is that these can usually be swapped out easily and inexpensively. Hanging some fresh curtains in a neutral shade will quickly update the room and give it a whole new look. Just hang onto the old ones so you can put them back up again when you move out. (And take your new ones with you!)

Invest in beautiful bedding

Quality bed linen is a near effortless way to elevate a bedroom. This room should feel like a sanctuary and choosing pure bedding that is comfortable, breathable and luxurious will ensure you always sleep well. The enticing texture and broad colour range makes linen sheets a popular choice. Style in single tones or mix and match for a simple yet chic look.

Introduce plants

Leafy pot plants liven up and bring energy to any space, while keeping you feeling connected to the natural world. A big towering plant like a fiddle leaf fig in a bare corner, or trailing vines like devil’s ivy cascading down a shelf are instant statement maker. As a bonus, they will purify the air.

Add artworks

Art is a sure-fire way to add colour and personality to a place, and an art collection is something you can build on over time and take wherever you go. Most landlords will grant permission to add some hooks to blank walls so you can hang your favourite pieces. If this isn’t an option, lean oversized artworks against the walls on the floor and line up smaller pieces along cabinets, mantels and bookshelves.

Let there be light

Lighting can make a huge difference to the ambience and style. If natural light is lacking, bring in some floor and table lamps placed carefully around. Light fixtures that are daggy or clash with your chosen décor can easily be replaced with something more modern. As with the window treatments, just remember to stash the old ones somewhere safe for when you leave.

Cover the floor

A non-permanent solution to ugly patterned tiles, stained carpet or weathered floorboards is to layer rugs over the top. The larger the better, in colours and textures that give the room a new look while covering up all manner of sins at the same time.

Stylish window furnishings that will warm your home this winter

We all know that beautiful window furnishings can completely change the look and feel of any room, creating atmosphere and adding another textural layer to your interior palette. What many people don’t consider is just how much of a difference blinds and curtains can make to the thermal properties of your home.

“Putting the right blind into your home reduces the cost of having your heater running at full capacity in the winter months and vice versa in the summer,” explains Matthew Walsh, managing director of Tuiss Blinds Online. “This changes the look and feel of your home while still maintaining the energy efficiency, giving you the best of both worlds.”

It’s definitely worthwhile looking into which types of blinds and curtains will make a difference to your energy bill. Here are some of the best options for keeping warm in winter:

V&A William Morris Acanthus Celedon Curtain

Blockout curtains

Did you know that curtains with a blockout lining provide the best thermal insulation out of all window furnishings on the market? They provide a huge benefit all year around, offering complete privacy, total light control and energy savings in both winter and summer. On those cold winter nights, think of them like a big warm blanket on your windows, making sure your entire home stays toasty and warm. With so many different colours and prints to choose from, you can choose to have your curtains be a subtle feature in the space, or be the absolute hero with a fabulous designer fabric to make a statement.

V&A William Morris Acanthus Velvet Forest roman blind

Blockout blinds

Opting for blockout lining on your blinds not only keeps the sun from interrupting your sleep-ins on the weekend, but the lining provides a great barrier to keep the chilly winter air out, and the warm interior air in. Again, this works in reverse over summer to keep your home nice and cool.

Honeycomb blinds

For an innovative solution, you can opt for Tuiss Blinds’ blockout honeycomb collection. The blinds are made of rows of hexagonal, aluminium-lined pockets which trap heat inside. This ensures your heater doesn’t have to work overtime to keep you nice and cosy, saving on energy bills and potentially repair costs. They can also help muffle sound, which is a great bonus if you live on a busy road.

Shade IT outdoor window blinds in modern grey

Outdoor blinds

We often think of outdoor blinds in the summer months to keep the heat out of our homes, but they offer an additional layer of thermal protection in the winter. Open weave designs still offer a view to the outdoors while providing privacy and sunlight protection.

Layering

Think of it this way, just as you layer up your clothing on those cold days to stay nice and cosy, you can layer up your blinds and curtains too! Just because you’ve opted for a blockout roman blind or a honeycomb blind doesn’t mean you need to miss out on the soft dreamy look of curtains. A popular trend we’re seeing is installing a sheer curtain over the top of a blockout blind, giving you the ultimate flexibility when it comes to both thermal insulation and light control. Add an outdoor blind to this combo and you’ve got all bases covered!

Affordable, custom linen curtains available online

There’s no doubt that curtains are trending but if you’ve ever explored that world, you’d know how limited and disparate the options are. Essentially you’re looking at high-end, expensive curtains purchased through an interior designer or cheap and nasty, off-the-shelf ones; neither of which are great options for the quality-conscious yet budget savvy consumer. But that’s all set to change with the recent launch of Draperly, a purveyor of luxurious yet affordable custom linen curtains available to purchase online.

Draperly
Draperly’s curtains are available naturally semi-sheer like this, or with full blockout lining.

“While shopping for my interiors clients, I found that the options for custom curtains were overpriced and underwhelming. The question I kept asking myself was simple – why did custom-made curtains have to be so expensive? I knew there had to be a better way. So, I set about finding it,” says interior designer and Draperly founder Lee Sandler. She travelled across Australia and overseas to meet directly with fabric houses and makers in order to realise her idea.

“I was determined to find a way to provide custom curtains to my clients at much lower prices than was currently on offer, but I didn’t want to sacrifice on quality so I decided to go directly to the sources myself. I knew I could eliminate all of the layers of middlemen who drive the prices up along the way.”  Lee ultimately ended up partnering with one of the world’s best and oldest flax linen producers in Belgium and making the curtains in Australia.

Draperly
The Belgian flax linen is available in five neutral colours to suit any home.

“Belgian flax linen is our core fabric. Our aim is to offer a high-end luxury product at a fraction of the traditional retail price and there isn’t a more luxurious fibre on the planet then linen. As well as being luxurious, linen is ecologically sound, totally biodegradable and recyclable. It is strong and flexible, and unlike many other fabrics, it just gets better with age,” says Lee.

And as for the makers, after looking across the globe, she found a team of talented producers nearby. “They’re right here in Sydney and have been sewing curtains for generations,” says Lee.

Draperly

Eschewing a traditional bricks and mortar store is another way in which Lee is able to keep costs down and the site’s simple, online-only ordering platform makes ordering curtains fast, easy and accessible. All you need to do is jump online, choose a fabric, style and lining and follow Draperly’s measurement guide. “We even send you swatches for free so you can feel the fabrics before you order and once an order is placed, within just a few weeks, your curtains arrive at your door, ready to hang.”

Draperly

And with a set of Belgian flax linen curtains starting from just $299, Lee has certainly delivered on the affordability front. “Our curtains are at least 50 percent cheaper than what you would pay an interior designer for a comparable product. Our pricing doesn’t mean that we aren’t as good as our competitors, we are just a whole lot cheaper. We have worked very hard at getting get rid of all of the unnecessary layers of middlemen and we take all the savings and pass them all on to our customers,” says Lee.

Draperly

And as for the curtain trend, Lee believes it’s an enduring one because nothing adds quite the same interior touch. “In the last few years we have seen a massive resurgence in the popularity of curtains in the home. Curtains add a touch of luxury to a space that just cannot be achieved from the other window treatments on the market and accessible luxury is exactly what our design and budget savvy clients are looking for.”

If customers are unsure of the best course of action for their windows, Draperly are happy to offer free advice too, if they send them a photo of their room.

Thrifty find: Heavily discounted European designer fabrics

With forty years in the textile and upholstery trades, Portuguese born husband and wife team Carlos and Fernanda Rodrigues certainly know how to spot a quality fabric. “An upholsterer by trade, I was fortunate enough to work with the best antique dealers in Australia including Country Trader,” says Carlos who recently hatched a plant to bring high-end European fabrics direct to the consumer at heavily reduced prices, through his new business Provincial Fabric House.

Striped cotton-wool blend fabric

“Basically, through my years in the industry and my contacts I’m able to source high-end fabrics that are discounted due to over-production or simply because they are end-of run,” says Carlos of the fabrics he sources from European mills, some of which have been in operation for over 200 years. “These mills have been making fabrics for French royalty and have evolved into very modern mills that meet a variety of demands for a global customer base. Rather than just supplying Europe, due to online, they’re now supplying markets all around the world constantly,” says Carlos of the mills based in France, Spain, Portugal and Germany.

But just what is the saving? “Well for example, you might purchase a fine quality Spanish linen through an interior designer for $200-$275 per metre but we are able to retail it directly to the consumer for $55 per metre,” says Carlos of the range that includes humble ticking right through to lush velvets and damask.

French cotton toile

Carlos’ fabric knowledge is obviously extensive, as evidenced by his contracts with Sydney heritage properties Kirribilli House and Vaucluse House. Basically, he’s the go-to for both properties when they have a textile dilemma or something needs replacing. And it’s this knowledge that serves his customers well as he’s on hand to recommend how a fabric will work in different applications. “Through years of experience we know how a fabric will hang as a curtain, how it will work on an ottoman and we can make recommendations accordingly,” says Carlos whose Bowral-based workshop makes curtains and cushions to order too.

With no minimum purchase, customers can also request samples online. “The European product is superior – once people touch it and receive their fabric in the mail that’s when you can tell the difference. The Chinese fabrics are cheap but the quality is not there,” says Carlos.

The expert’s rules and tips for choosing curtains

There’s no doubt shows like The Block have made curtains (especially sheers) cool again and someone reaping the rewards is Valley Vogue’s Belinda Sinclair. However, she argues they’ve never been out of fashion in her 15-year career!

Belinda Sinclair of Valley Vogue

Belinda was offered a traineeship at a custom curtain and interiors store in the Hunter Valley straight out of school. “I was there for nine years, the last three, being on the road looking after the measuring and quoting which I loved.”

After a break from working and having two children, Belinda and her husband decided she should give starting her own curtain business a go (“Let’s just say I wasn’t a good stay at home mum, but that’s a story for another day!”) and Valley Vogue was born in 2o11. Towards the end of of 2013, she went into a shared studio space in Newcastle’s King Street with long time friend and interior designer Melissa Webster of The Gather Collective. They’ve been there ever since.

“I have been working with curtains for 15 years now and in that time I don’t think curtains ever went out fashion as such. Shutters and blinds did take over a little in the early 2000s. Since curtains, in particular sheers, have been given more focus on shows like The Block, people have gone back to appreciating the value of fabric on their windows to soften a space.”

And what about ready-made curtains? Do they have a place? “I’m not a fan but then why would I be?” she jokes. “Having said that, there are some nice ones out there and if that’s what best suits your budget then go for it. The biggest thing is them being well fitted, not like a pair of three-quarter leg pants that aren’t actually supposed to be three-quarters! Have them touching, always touching, or just off the floor, just!

Linen or linen-look sheers are very popular at the moment. “Taking the curtains to ceiling height and, where possible and functional, wall to wall, is in. This not only adds height and makes your space feel bigger, it looks amazing.”

So, what should you expect to pay for custom curtains? That’s like asking how long a piece of string is! “With custom curtains, the main component or cost is that fabric. I always tell my clients you can spend $30 a metre or $330 a metre. Or more!”

Belinda’s top tips for choosing curtains

  • Check the fabric you select in the lighting it will be in. Check it against the paint, the carpet any other major furnishings. Colour can go very wrong and be very changeable, particularly when it comes to white.
  • Ask for more then one quote from your potential supplier. Select the fabric you absolutely love and then ask them for a quote on a cheaper but comparable fabric (if there is one!) so you have a fall back option.
  • Make sure you find a consultant on your wavelength and who you trust. Ask them about their after service (some don’t have one and won’t fix or adjust anything, even if it needs it!).
  • If you don’t understand something, ask. We will will often send an image of the curtain heading we are suggesting or that was discussed as this is where the lingo can be confusing and you need a visual.

Alisa & Lysandra on dressing (your windows) for success!

We see it all the time, properties where the owners have renovated the home from floor to ceiling covering every detail a potential buyer is looking for, until our gaze reaches the windows (inset cricket sounds).

alisa-lysandra-living-terrace

A beautiful property with inappropriate or dated window furnishings is a deal breaker for buyers. In a human analogy, it’s like a well-dressed woman turning up at a gala dinner wearing a gorgeous gown…in her wellies.

The case of no window treatments

In the hierarchy of your renovation budget, window furnishings should be amongst the top tasks on your expense list. Leaving your newly renovated property without window treatments is an automatic red flag for buyers that signals they need to invest extra dollars they often don’t have.

A house with no window treatments also lacks warmth and elegance, often jeopardizing the perceived value of the home.

The case of dated window treatments

You’ve renovated the entire property, but have run out of budget for new curtains or blinds. The ones currently in the property are still functional albeit a little dated and not matching to the new colour scheme of the home. Do you keep them or do you ditch them?

the blo

Replace them immediately!

If dollars are tight, you may be able to sell them online as secondhand window treatments provided that they are still in a good condition. With endless choices available you are bound to find a window treatment that will fit the budget, or stretch it conservatively, but whatever you do don’t have a blind spot when it comes to assessing and dressing your windows.

Curtains, blinds or both?

Your budget will determine your choices. If you’re renovating for profit, versus renovating to live in, you will also have different standards for the window treatments you wish to see. Layering is so important for creating aesthetic abundance and elegance in a home.

Window furnishings have a dual purpose; a functional one (keeping the light out, controlling room temperature) and an aesthetic one (creating the illusion of space, grandeur, softness and warmth)

Block out blinds will tick the functionality box, but why not add another layer of sheer curtains which will give you additional light and mood control!

alisa-lysandra-4-640x461

If you’re adding curtains to the property, it’s best to create the illusion of space by increasing their length so that they appear longer from floor to ceiling, even if your window is considerably smaller in size.

If you’re adding blinds, remember to review all the colour choices available to you. The days of white or beige blinds are long gone, and nowadays you can colour match your blinds to your wall colour therefore creating a seamless look that adds more dimension and flow to your interiors.

Are plantation shutters worth it?

Plantation shutters are gorgeous and opulent yet earthy, and can literally transform not only your windows but the entire look and feel of your home. They are low maintenance, ideal for families with asthma, and will look ‘as new’ in years to come.

Traditionally, renovators steer away from plantation shutters due to their cost, but we’re here to tell you that if you are ruling them out because of the dollars you need to think again! Market competition has really increased, and more suppliers are offering cost-effective options for plantation shutters that look incredibly beautiful but are manufactured at a cost of the usual retail price. Shop around and obtain not only three but four, five or six quotes. You’d be surprised how much you can save.

Balance is key

Not dressing your windows is just as bad as overdressing them.

Be conservative with your choices and always assess for balance. Heavily dressed windows in a minimalist home will stand out and feel out-of-place. Likewise, poorly dressed windows in a beautiful home will also have negative aesthetic repercussions.

Do you have a window furnishing question? We’d love to help.

5 DIY updates for your rental living room

By Kay Harrison

No question, the renter’s life is far from glam. But your decor doesn’t have to follow suit. A little out-of-the-box thinking is all you need to transform your space into a home sweet haven. Sure, there will always be those boxes that you cart from place to place unsure of their contents but too frightened to investigate. But cloaked in a nice throw and arranged around a coffee table, these can double as a boho-chic living nook.

But jokes aside, decorating your home-on-loan is difficult. For one, there’s the investment and effort vs length of stay ratio to consider. But a few quick and simple (and cheap) adjustments can go a long way. After all, time has a way of getting away with you. And a refuge from the outside world is the most must-have of must-haves.

So today, we’re turning to your living space and we’ve put together a few easy DIY tips to make your space more livable.

Fire things up with faux wall-panelling

Dabble Magazine proves you can change the world with two paint colours, painter’s tape, a metal ruler, a level and a little DIY know-how. Above, they show us how to achieve a geo-chic look with just a little patience. Can’t paint? Washi tape is to DIY decor what half a toothpick is MacGyver. It doesn’t look like much but it can save your life. Washi tape is the perfect antidote to too much beige. Apartment Therapy also have some great suggestions for removable wall-panelling options.

Realise that New York loft look

Add an exposed brick wall to your space without the dust and fuss with these wallpapers. Photo credit: Zanui

Love that urban-industrial warehouse style? Introduce exposed-brick walls into your space with easy-to-apply wallpapers. Obviously this is asking for a more flexible landlord, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get. And if you’re planning on staying there a while, this kind of investment gives back ten-fold.

Re-purpose vintage tablecloths for super-cute curtains

We love that chintz meets lace look. You can create your very own window valances (use lace tablecloths) or curtains (use floral and patterned) with minimal fuss. Shop your local Vinnies to add some serious-nana style to your space. You can find curtain rings with metal clips attached for this uber simple make-over at the likes of Spotlight.

Line your shelving

Better yet, line behind, underneath, even on top of your shelving. Adding colour in unexpected spaces adds individuality to your home. Plus it keeps it neat and chic. And it’s easy to re-line with plain white when you leave.

Define it with decals

Removable wall decals redefine your space instantly and peel away when you have to leave. And there is an almost infinite number on the market – from Banksy designs to quotes and iconic rockstars. Can’t argue with that.

Here’s to making a little sanctuary for yourself in your rental home! Go forth, chickens! Nest!

In the lead up to Prêt-à-Portière’s launch on 14 May, the start-up business is holding a generous pre-launch sale with a massive 70% off all online product including gift certificates and cushions.

It will debut a new collection of exquisite handcrafted ready-to-hang drapery at DesignEx Sydney 2012. It claims to be introducing ready-to-hang drapery that has never before looked as custom and high-end. And let’s face it, ready-made curtains don’t have the best rep!

Founder and creative director Alice Orozco, says: “Until now, most ready-made curtains available on the market have been completely unacceptable for most medium to high-end homes in Australia. Our ready-to-hang draperies are not like your typical ready-mades, they are exquisite, lined and interlined, and add a touch of elegance and panache to an interior.”

Alice says: “If custom just isn’t an option and you don’t want chintzy drapes from the big retailers, then buy quality hand-crafted ready-to-hang drapes from Prêt-à-Portière in exclusive silks, taffetas, cottons, linens and hand-printed patterns.”

The massive 70% off pre-launch sale will not be repeated so get in quick before 10 May and use code PRE70 on checkout. If you are unsure what to buy, then buy gift certificates at a fraction of the cost and decide later!
