Guest post: Abigail Ahern’s Sydney masterclass

Abigail, after a horror 48-hour flight from London, arrived in Melbourne hours before her first round of masterclasses and then flew on to Sydney to deliver her class again at Megan Morton’s The School to a room full of Sydney (and New Zealand!) based designers, stylists and interior fanatics.

Aussie stylist Jane Frosh with Abigail Ahern

Abigail is a fun, creative, headstrong soul who scoffs at rules and appears determined to break them. She doesn’t take herself or her branding too seriously which, I believe, is part of her charm. Her talent is outside the box and unconventional.

Her constant references to Alice In Wonderland had the group hanging off her every word. She mixes up scale and proportion, adding friction and grandeur to an interior. Her moody, muted colour palette is both rock & roll and also warm and comforting.

Stylist Jane Frosh puts her mark on Sydney’s hottest new hotel, QT

Stylist Jane Frosh recently got to work on Sydney’s most exciting new hotel in years, the QT, in the historic Gowings building. She was contracted to design and style the original, heritage listed, Art Deco cabinets on the lobby level and the day spa.

“My concept was to blend the history of the Gowings building with the new funky design of the hotel build,” says Jane. “Gowings was a turn of the century department store. Country folk came to the city and went to Gowings to get a haircut, to have a suit made, to buy underwear etc. Consequently I decided to use paper, string, hessian and women’s underwear to build a concept. The result was an amazing combination of texture, pared back with neon pink (a colour used predominately in the hotel, along with Ives Klein blue), form and story.”

(Why am I not surprised Jane used neon?!)

Temple & Webster send stylists to their VIP customers’ homes

Online homewares and furniture destination Temple & Webster is offering a personal home styling service to its VIP customers. They’re sending their editor (Victoria Baker) and stylist (Jess Bellef) to visit the homes of their regular customers and help them beautify their living spaces with existing pieces and new ones they’ve bought from the online store.

Susan, from Brisbane, was the first person to be treated to the VIP experience.  Stylist Jess says: “Susan was lovely and welcoming, as was her home. It was a beautiful old Queenslander house, which was built in the early 1900s. Large rooms, nice flow through, and two main balcony sitting areas. Susan and her family have extended and renovated over the years, and the space was just so relaxing. There was Temple & Webster product everywhere!”

Flower bombing at Megan Morton’s School

On Sunday I did something I haven’t done in ages. I made something, with my own two hands. There were flowers, tea, cake, laughs and a room full of lovely ladies. I am talking, of course, about Holly Hipwell’s legendary flower bomb class at The School.

The School, if you didn’t know, belongs to one of Australia’s best stylists, Megan Morton. It runs all manner of classes for kids and big kids, where you can learn to make beautiful things. She also runs workshops where she shares her interior styling and property staging wisdom.

Mr Jason Grant on making your home FEEL good

I went to Mr Jason Grant’s design session at Coco Republic Design School last week and it was great. I’m lucky I get to hang out with MJG at industry events all the time but it isn’t really appropriate to pick someone’s brains about their job every time you see them so this way I got to sit back and make notes while everyone else asked the questions. Smart, huh?

For those who don’t know, Jason is a super famous magazine stylist who used to be style director at Real Living. His work can be found in all the major homes magazines, he has his own paint ranges for Murobond and, even more excitingly, he now has a book deal. Can’t wait for that one to come out.

Inspiration via Megan Morton

This morning I went to Megan Morton’s free workshop at Moore Park Supa Centa with a couple of girlfriends and we had a great time. Considering she is such a rockstar in the Sydney styling world, MM is incredibly down to earth and a great presenter, as people are when they’re passionate about a subject.

Learn colour with Sibella Court

Sibella Court’s latest workshop is all about colour. It’s taking place next Wednesday 26 June from 6.30 to 8.30pm at Sun Studios in Alexandria and costs $80.

Sibella says: “I believe that every person has their own colour palette. It can be found by looking carefully at the things you surround yourself with: your clothes, the invitations and ephemera you keep, patterns you buy, jewellery you wear, even your teacups and plates! If you put your favourite things together you notice the same colours are repeated again and again. From this you can discover the colours that make you happy, how they can sit together and be applied into your interiors.”

“Interior designers are scientists and stylists are magicians,” says Inside Out’s Vanessa Colyer Tay

Vanessa Colyer Tay, who has been style editor at Inside Out for four years, is happy so long as she’s constantly evolving and being inspired. I’ve long been a fan of her work, and while she’s not as self-publicising as some stylists, her work is well known and respected, and that says it all.

Mr Jason Grant’s third paint collection for Murobond

Sydney super stylist Mr Jason Grant has created a third colour collection, Gray Scale Garden, for Murobond. It’s available to buy from tomorrow but I’m excited to share a sneaky peek with you here.

I asked MJG a few questions about the latest range and his love of paint…

Gray Scale Garden: why the name? It seemed fitting as the collection started with shades of grey and I do love nature. My starting point was old world. Currently I’m really into all things from the Victorian era. Everything has to have a story, it helps me with the creative process.

How would you describe this collection? How does it differ from the last one? The third collection is moodier and perhaps more sophisticated
. Perhaps I’m exploring my darker side of colour.

What inspired it? I wanted the collection to feel like a change in season. I wanted a more winter feel but of course with a few pops of colour.

I love grey. I was once told in a colour workshop that grey is a great complement to every colour. Do you agree? Grey is friends with everyone. It’s a fantastic shade and definitely one of my favorites.

Why do you love to paint? Painting is just a simple way of transforming a wall, a room or a piece of furniture. Paint and colour create feelings and moods. It’s about how something looks and how in turn that makes you feel.

What else are you working on at the moment? Something very exciting. I will let you know soon…

Jason talks more about the collection in the current issue of House & Garden magazine. Read my interview with him from last year here and visit his blog here.

These beautiful images are by photographer Lauren Bamford. Murobond paints can be bought online.

Sibella on Styling

Want to learn about interior styling from the best? Book your ticket for this event, quick smart!

Sibella Court, celebrated stylist and author of etc. and Nomad, is running a workshop called Styling vs. Decorating in Sydney on 27 March.

“I shot all the styling ideas for Nomad at locations around Sydney (thank you to all my friends!) with my brother, Chris. It shows that you can use any decorative background and restyle and change according to your desires and recent inspirations,” she says. “Any of these locations could have been changed to suit any of my current fads. Don’t theme your spaces, simply add flavour from your recent adventures or life experiences.

“This workshop is not about expensive renovations or construction changes, but about adding and subtracting and rearranging your existing things, it’s about lo-fi and being clever and upcycling with things you already have.”

Sibella will talk about these ideas of lo-fi and upcycling and demonstrate her edit process (that could be priceless). She’ll also discuss what she feels are the differences between stylists and decorators (something Interiors Addict gets asked all the time!) and what each offers. Lots of fun and demos are promised, as with all Sibella’s sellout workshops.

Location TBA. Buy tickets ($80) here.

Sibella Court workshop on commercial spaces

If you’re interested in styling commercial spaces then Sibella Court’s latest workshop Commercial Concepts could be just for you.

Learn about the ins and outs of designing a commercial space on 8 February 2012 from 6.30pm. Super stylist Sibella will hold court (pardon the pun) in one of the spaces she has designed. She will discuss the entire process: coming up with a brief, concept development, colour palette, furniture and finishes, installation and final touches.

You will be able to understand how commercial interiors come to be through physical examples of the space that you are in. Chat with Sibella about how research and history creates a strong conceptual foundation and how the steps that follow are all based on this.

Shopping, sourcing, creating a colour palette, applying an idea to space, considering seating and floorplan, arranging furniture, art installation and styling will all be discussed.

Location still to be disclosed but it will be a venue that Sibella has designed in Sydney city (Interiors Addict would guess it’ll be one of the Merivale bars/restaurants). Complimentary alcoholic drink on arrival.

Buy your ticket ($80 each) here.

Melinda Ashton Turner launches colour blog

Interior stylist Melinda Ashton Turner has returned home to Sydney after 11 years in London with a fabulous new blog to share. She had the idea for The Colour Field while working as style director for Inside Out UK and has finally brought it to fruition.

The Colour Field is a weekly blog deconstructing a room’s colour scheme along with quotes from prominent industry figures as to what their favourite colour is and why,” she says.

We all know colour is something many people struggle with in their interiors. Sadly, you’re about as likely to get it horribly wrong as you are to create something that really works.

Melinda’s stunning styling has appeared in the top interiors magazines internationally. Originally training as an interior designer, Melinda has been working as an interior stylist and art director since 1990. Her impressive background includes roles such as style editor on Vogue Living and decoration editor on Homes & Gardens UK. She’s worked on advertising campaigns for Harrods and Wrangler and as a consultant to brands like Jo Malone. So yes, she knows a thing or two about this industry!

Find out more about Melinda here and visit the blog here.

You heard it here FIRST! Mr Jason Grant is making Officeworks cool!

Just look at this beautiful styling work by Mr Jason Grant in his latest collaboration… with Officeworks! Doesn’t it look divine? He’s styled the store’s entire summer range, in which he has his own collection for the first time. How exciting. These photos are typical of Jason’s mismatched, retro, colourful, relaxed vibe, seen regularly in Australia’s top interiors magazines.

Check it all out at the Officeworks website. I know what I’ll be picking up when I next stock up on clipboards… Just like cushions, a girl can never have too much stationery 😉

Love your work, MJG!
