Shop love: some retail moments are worth the spend

By Bianca Tzatzagos

Nostalgic it may be, but it often feels like the era of legendary bricks and mortar retail is behind us. It may have even been behind us before I was born. There are tonnes of reason for this, and obviously online shopping is a fundamental one. But I can remember a handful of truly legendary Sydney shopping experiences that have stood out for me in my lifetime, and I’m not so old.

The Lost + Found Department in Hunters Hill, Sydney

One that sticks in my mind was in 2009, the first time I entered Sibella Court’s The Society Inc in Paddington, a curious haberdasher-collector-merchant that felt old and new, exciting and authentic all at once. I recall buying tiny dried starfish as Christmas ornaments and spools of antique ribbon plucked straight out of the stylist’s own curated cabinet of curiosities. Sibella lived upstairs at the time, and yet nothing in the building felt off-limits to visitors.

The new Society Inc. in St Peters, Sydney.

About the same time (2010 or so) began Suzie Anderson’s weekend shopping events at her Bowral estate, Hopewood House, a beautiful destination of French goodies in a chateau-like setting, replete with potting shed, dining hall and magnificent gardens.

Pic via Suzie Anderson Home

I also recall much earlier visits in the 1980s to the Strand Arcade’s “Martinvale” gift store where Mum bought me the teeniest blown-glass punch bowl for my future doll’s house. I still have it, and now also the doll’s house in which it resides.

The common thread throughout all these memorable boutiques? The shopkeepers were of singular vision, seemingly tireless and uniquely driven. Making money was never the primary objective – there was always a generosity of spirit that shone through. Even if you didn’t buy anything (and I very often didn’t), you still got something out of a visit. The sense of a legacy being created was palpable.

When I was first given the biography of Chuck Williams, the founder of Californian behemoth Williams Sonoma, it read to me like a fairy tale. I was enchanted by the story of this single individual who had lived through the Depression and travelled to Europe for the first time in 1950s, by then in his late 30s. A builder by trade and foodie by passion, he came back from his trip, bought a hardware shop in Sonoma, added a few housewares to it – and plenty of characteristic flair. “He laid a black-and-white floor, painted the walls butter yellow, and installed his own shelving, which he painted a glossy bright white.”

The Society Inc.

It didn’t take long for the shop’s hardware inventory to be overtaken by Chuck’s natural inclination for kitchen items. This included “…a set of black-and-white cups and saucers from Sweden. Another was oyster baskets made of dark willow, which Chuck had seen used for carrying and displaying shellfish in the Parisian markets.” Later in Merchant of Sonoma, Chuck explains his buying philosophy: “I have never bought anything with the idea that I think somebody else is going to like it. I buy because it appeals to me, and when others feel the same way, that’s good. Those are the kind of people I want for my customers.”

What a marvellously ballsy approach to retail. It assumes one important idea: that you know instinctively what you love and let intuition rule your decisions. It means finetuning your eye to recognise quality and investing in your own integrity at all costs. It’s risky, brazen and certainly no guarantee of business success.

Before Instagram guided everyone’s aesthetic opinions, I would look to the fervent words of local shopping doyennes and writers such as Marion von Adlerstein, Maggie Alderson and Melissa Penfold. They helped to glorify the art of retail for me and I’ve been chasing that buzz ever since.

Not that I’m a shopaholic. Not even close. I could never stomach anything but relatively careful spending within pretty practical limits. I just love to collect retail experiences, and prior to camera phones these were captured in my mind’s eye and savoured through any ephemera I could get my hands on. I have collected paper shopping bags for at least 30 years now – and the quantity belies my rather modest shopping habits. Like any collector, I am particular about which ones make the cut and, in most cases, this packaging has long outlasted the products within.

Same goes for pretty postcards, business cards and catalogues from my most revered stores, sometimes mailed to me and other times nicked from the shop’s counter. Heavenly printed ribbon and embossed gift boxes can be reason alone to elevate a store to legend status.

But back to my original point. The glory days of bricks and mortar are surely behind us now. Perhaps in my lifetime, they were already gone. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to see Mark Foy’s in its day, or even the 1910 version of Selfridges in the UK. That was an era where department stores reigned rather than flailed.

Yet among today’s confused concept stores and online retailers, some gems are flourishing. The Lost + Found Department in a heritage corner store in Sydney’s oldest garden suburb is a glorious case in point. It’s all down to the vision and energy of another legendary shopkeeper, Silvia Noble, who has been savvy enough to use social media and online as a vehicle for pedalling more of the old-world magic that emanates from the shop. Another stellar example is Lily Pond in Geelong, Victoria. I haven’t made to that store in person and yet I’m thoroughly captivated by its portrayal on Instagram. It alone has inspired me to visit one day and follow along virtually in the meantime.

The Lost + Found Department

What both these current shops share is their ability to effortlessly straddle past and present, digital and physical with boundless enthusiasm and curiosity. All to bring their customers some of the world’s most wonderful things, presented in the most tantalising ways. It makes me hopeful that some delightful moments of retail nostalgia are still to come.

Sibella Court’s former Society Inc. in Paddington up for sale

Anyone with even a vague interest in styling will have heard of Sibella Court and The Society Inc. so there is bound to me much excitement at the news that her former shop in Sydney’s exclusive Paddington has been listed for sale this week. Always thought you’d love to live inside the pages of one her books? Well, now you kinda can… if you have a spare $1.6million.

bw_photo_11889_2731027

The terrace at 27 Alexander Street was the part-time home and former shop of the celebrity stylist, known the world over for her eclectic style. Having recently moved to a much larger warehouse space for her work in St Peters, listing the Paddington property on Air BnB for a short while, it is now up for sale.

bw_photo_11889_6857854

bw_photo_11889_3427882

The space is Sibella through and through and personally I would love to see it bought by someone who embraces that rather than renovates it into something slick and new-looking! But as I’m not in a position to buy the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home set over two floors, I’ll have to let the lucky buyer decide!

bw_photo_11889_4911122

It’s in a lovely, leafy, quiet corner of sought after Paddington (on a block that straddles the address of 18 Stewart) and open inspections take place tomorrow (Saturday 12 September) from 11.30am-to-12 noon. It is being shown to buyers decked out in quintessential Sibella vintage finds and collectibles from her travels and will appeal to those who love her quirky look. Frankly, it would have been criminal to clear out this magical space and stage it for sale in the mainstream way.

bw_photo_11889_1074447

The Victorian high ceilings are strung with old naval rope and ladders, while the floors and staircase are painted to brilliant effect (no doubt with colours from her own range for Murobond). Those who relish found pebbles and driftwood will adore the designer bathroom, which feels ‘live’ from the pages of one of Sibella’s many design books.

bw_photo_11889_2248611

bw_photo_11889_9970430

Outside there’s private a courtyard, laundry terrace and on the street, garden beds planted with strawberries, geraniums, nasturtiums, and blossom.

I am full of envy for whoever snaps up this enviable, unique pad in a wonderful Sydney location!

bw_photo_11889_3273298

As well as being an interior stylist and author, Sibella, who became a mum last year, is also a product designer, historian and creative director. Her hospitality spaces include Hotel Palisade, Old Joe’s, The Pines, Mr Wong, Palmer & Co, El Loco, MsG’s & The Fish Shop. Last week, her new television show, Restoration Australia, aired on ABC.

Sibella has spent much of her life exploring the globe for inspiration. Formerly a homewares stylist in New York, she has a knack for discovering new artists, designers and products for her much loved shop, The Society Inc. (now in St Peters). Her wanderlust can be seen in all the personal spaces she inhabits and in her many things accumulated over 20 years of shopping!

27 Alexander Street is being sold by Shannan Whitney and Darren Pearce of BresicWhitney, a lifestyle property group that responds to the energy and emotion of inner Sydney. Over the last five years, it has sought to break the mold as a residential property group, by welcoming a new conversation about inner-city living.

Sibella Court’s new space, TV show and book and life as a travelling mum

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard much from Sibella Court, the Sydney stylist with a (no exaggeration really) cult following. But rest assured, behind the scenes, it is all happening! Today, we’re bringing you all the news on her new warehouse premises, TV show, boutique accommodation, book and last but by no means least daughter, baby Silver.

Low key Sibella is as busy as ever. Image by
Low key Sibella is as busy as ever

Sibella recently opened an amazing warehouse space – the all new Society Inc — in Sydney’s St Peters and we couldn’t wait to shoot it. Replacing her former tiny, packed-to-the-rafters shop in Paddington, it’s quite a change but the aesthetic is as distinctly Sibella as ever.

societyinc_jacquiturk-12

“At the beginning of last year, I saw the space for sale on Doody Street, a space I knew well from my early styling years. I viewed it, it was completely out of my price bracket and way too big, but it woke my imagination to be in a much larger space,” she says.

“I create interiors and I wanted clients, guests and customers to be able to experience the pages of my books by walking through sets, installations and vignettes and purchasing the pieces I put in my hospitality spaces (Ms G’s, Mr Wong, El Loco, Palmer & Co and Bistrode CBD to name but a few), as well as celebrating all the fabulous makers, designers, artists and creators I work with and have forged friendships with over a 20+ year career in the styling world.”

societyinc_jacquiturk-25

societyinc_jacquiturk-24

The L-shape space has been split into 65% public and 35% private. The public space will be “a combination of retail, installation, activity, magic and fantasy; a sensory experience that feels as though you’re walking amongst the pages of one of my books,” also used for workshops, talks, photography, dinner parties, flea markets, launches, events and whatever else takes her fancy. “It will showcase some of our handpicked favourite people, artists and companies that we have loved and worked with over the years.”

Sibella and her team will be launching brands not previously available in Australia from all over the globe (the USA, Netherlands, the Caribbean and the UK to name but a few) and if there’s one woman who knows how to curate, it’s her! There’ll also be two container sales a year from her travel destinations.

The dream space will also serve as an art gallery, where you can purchase the pieces displayed within her installations and vignettes. “Above all else, it will an interactive space that changes and invites conversation, with exciting products, exchange of ideas and fun!” The private side of the space will serve as a studio for her hospitality design work, ever-popular books and product development.

societyinc_jacquiturk-1

societyinc_jacquiturk-5

But that’s not all! That beautiful little 1860s corner terrace in leafy Paddington, which used to house The Society Inc, is now on Airbnb and you can stay there, or indeed host an event in the space. “We’ve turned it into a pied-a-terre; a one-bedroom hotel, a very boutique experience. It’s aimed at the weary pilgrim who needs to rest their head after a long journey, however with a little more than a humble stretcher.

“We are often asked by curious international parties about our favourite Australian furniture makers, artists, crafters, textile designers, dyers, tinkers and smiths and the like. This is where we will be showcasing some our favourites and sharing the love. It will be a sensory experience; an imaginarium of curiosities, forever changing and never finished, again, like being in the pages of one of my books.” A huge fan of sites like Airbnb and onefinestay, she hopes to appeal to those seeking a personal experience that gives their adventures a richer and deeper involvement in a Sydney stay and a fond memory to take home. Well, I live in Sydney and I’m despearately trying to find an excuse to stay there myself!

societyinc_jacquiturk-13

societyinc_jacquiturk-11

Sibella is not known for being a self-publicist (some would say an essential part of the stylist’s job these days) and perhaps her air of mystery, ironically, is what keeps people coming back for more. She also travels so far and wide that she is rarely in town for long. But becoming a mum hasn’t slowed down the laidback bowerbird. “Silver comes along for the ride and she is only little so she fits into my Filson bag! As any small business owner knows, there is no rest for the wicked. I have two babies now – Silver and The Society Inc.”

But we’re happy to hear we’ll see a lot more of the stylist this year. After two years of shooting, Sibella has a TV show coming up on the ABC later this year called Restoration Australia. “This year is as busy as ever with lots of hospitality spaces being designed, new product ranges in fragrance, furniture and soft furnishings, an Anthropologie collaboration, The Stylist’s Guide to the Globe (her latest book), collaborations and plenty of exciting, cool stuff.”

societyinc_jacquiturk-35

She’ll never be in one spot for too long though: “Part of my job description is to travel — it is the root of my inspiration for all things.”

Pre-order Sibella Court’s latest book, Bowerbird

Who doesn’t love a new Sibella Court book? Bowerbird is almost with us. Yay! The bestselling author of Etcetera, The Stylist’s Guide to NYC and Nomad, has always been a bowerbird. This was first noticed when, at the age of three, she put together collections of shells, sequins, beads and ribbons. Like her avian counterpart, she goes far and wide to add to her collections, enjoys arranging and rearranging the pieces and, ultimately, believes that collections, containing the memories they do, are a vital part of any home.

In Bowerbird, Sibella reveals her very personal and surprising approach to collecting and collections. She shows how to procure the elements of a collection, how to organise and store them, and how to display them in creative and ever-changing ways. With the help of Bowerbird, you will view your belongings in a whole new light.

Garage sale at Sibella’s. You’d be crazy to miss it!

It’s the stuff of a wannabe stylist’s dreams! This Saturday 5 May, Sibella Court is one of hundreds of people holding a garage sale as part of the Garage Sale Trail initiative, of which she’s an ambassador. Just imagine the treasures you could pick up in the name of sustainability and recycling!

“As you can imagine, from a 20-year career as a stylist and globetrotter I have quite the collection of oddities and curiosities,” she says. “Each and every piece was painstakingly wrapped and shipped when I moved my studio and storage from New York to Sydney. The time has finally come to say farewell to many of my objets, props, fabric by-the-yard, plates, cutlery, clothing, shoes, doors, souvenirs and bits n’ bobs. We are clearing out the cupboards and attic, or rather making room for new collections.”

Sibella and her assistants Hannah and Leah will be running the sale outside her shop The Society Inc. in Sydney’s Paddington. “We’ll be on hand to tell you what’s what and explain how the blue striped turban made it from the cameleer’s head to The Society Inc. and other wonderful objet histories. Come and discover a 3D timeline of my travels and life and take a piece home with you!”

Now who can say no to that?!

9am to 5pm | The Society Inc. | 18 Stewart Street | Paddington | NSW 2021

Find out about garage sales all over Australia this Saturday at the Garage Sale Trail website.

Sibella Court workshop on commercial spaces

If you’re interested in styling commercial spaces then Sibella Court’s latest workshop Commercial Concepts could be just for you.

Learn about the ins and outs of designing a commercial space on 8 February 2012 from 6.30pm. Super stylist Sibella will hold court (pardon the pun) in one of the spaces she has designed. She will discuss the entire process: coming up with a brief, concept development, colour palette, furniture and finishes, installation and final touches.

You will be able to understand how commercial interiors come to be through physical examples of the space that you are in. Chat with Sibella about how research and history creates a strong conceptual foundation and how the steps that follow are all based on this.

Shopping, sourcing, creating a colour palette, applying an idea to space, considering seating and floorplan, arranging furniture, art installation and styling will all be discussed.

Location still to be disclosed but it will be a venue that Sibella has designed in Sydney city (Interiors Addict would guess it’ll be one of the Merivale bars/restaurants). Complimentary alcoholic drink on arrival.

Buy your ticket ($80 each) here.

Launch day! Mr Jason’s Grant’s Murobond colours & Sibella Court’s new book, Nomad

What an exciting day out for Interiors Addict! Not only was it the launch of Mr Jason’s Grant’s new colours for Murobond, it was also our first meeting IN REAL LIFE. Very exciting and he was as delightful as I expected!

I went along to the launch at Murobond in Artarmon with my friend Emma Blomfield from Nest Designs. It was also great to meet Juliet Arent from Arent & Pyke and stylist Jane Frosh. Jason’s new colour range, aptly named Road Trip, is gorgeous and inspired by summer. I was excited to find the PERFECT teal in there called Deep Sea Dreaming.

Later on we went to the launch of Sibella Court’s new book, Nomad at her shop The Society Inc. As a massive fan of Etcetera, I can’t wait to get stuck into my (signed, of course) copy! There I bumped into Jason again (gee, stop stalking me!) and took a rather cute photo of him and Sibella together. Was also great to meet Belle Coco Republic Interior Designer of the Year Greg Natale, another Interiors Addict past interviewee.

It’s just too much interiors-related excitement for a girl. I need a sit down and a cup of tea…

Sibella’s Souvenirs of Etcetera

I really am beginning to wonder if stylist Sibella Court ever sleeps? She’s been busy sourcing inspiration overseas, she’s about to embark on publicity for her new book NOMAD, she’s planning her next styling workshop later this month and now she’s curating exhibitions!

If you loved her cult book Etcetera (I don’t know anyone who’s into interiors who doesn’t have a copy), you’re going to love this. “I am creating an installation so you can explore within life-size pages of Etcetera,” she says. “At Barometer Gallery, you can touch, see, marvel and enjoy, as if you are within the photographs, discovering them in a space that you exist in, rather than the book that you hold within your hands.”

The exhibition, sponsored by Absolut, is made up of her favourite images from the book, taken by her brother, photographer Chris Court. She also asked fans to tell her which photographs they found most inspiring.

“You will be able to feel and experience all the special textured papers that make up Etcetera. Choose and purchase your favourite photographs based on both content, scale and paper textures. This is part installation, part photography, and part paper exhibition.”

Exhibition dates:

Opening Night: Tuesday 15 November, 5-7pm

Open: Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 November, 12-6pm

Exhibition Event: Q&A with Sibella and Chris Court, Saturday 19 November, 2-4pm.

Sibella Court, whose interview I featured earlier this week, ran an amazing hands on workshop called Emotive Interiors in Sydney this evening. I’ll share more of her top tips and insights on here tomorrow, but suffice to say it was a wonderful experience to watch her build a set in front of us at Sun Studios in Alexandria. Funny, charming, down to earth and of course super talented, it was an absolute pleasure. There’ll be more workshops in the future and I’ll be sure to let you know when I hear when they are! Check out The Society Inc website for more details.
