Greg Natale’s new book is pure (patterned) house envy

You could say it’s become his design signature so it makes sense that interior design virtuoso Greg Natale’s latest book is all about pattern. The 256-page tome, The Patterned Interior, illustrates the power of pattern in design by taking readers inside a swathe of stunning homes he’s designed. I for one have serious interiors envy after looking at just a snapshot of them.

“Greg proves himself in this book to be not just a leader in the field in his own country, but to be a world-class tastemaker. His singular style has become admired internationally, inspiring many to be true to themselves, to be more adventurous with pattern, and to live life to the fullest through fun and totally fabulous design. This is undeniably the signature of a master designer, the signature of Greg Natale,” says Martyn Lawrence Bullard (of Million Dollar Decorators’ fame) who wrote the foreword.

The book features 180 colour photographs captured by the celebrated interiors photographer Anson Smart and while the spaces span many countries and myriad styles, they all boast Greg’s singular sophisticated, opulent vision.

It’s no secret Greg is one of our favourites here at Interiors Addict, with our publisher, Jen, having ghost written his first book, The Tailored Interior, with him; something she describes as a career highlight. We can’t wait to get our hands on a copy of this one!

Four of the biggest bathroom trends right now

By Andrew Stenos

Trends in bathroom design tend to come and go, much like clothing, fashion or hairstyles. When renovating your bathroom, it is always best to be focussed on creating your dream bathroom, not necessarily working with the hottest bathroom trend in the marketplace.

Having said that, the top bathroom trends for 2016 can have timeless appeal if you follow good design principles as you go. Today, we are talking about some of our favourite bathroom trends and showcasing some amazing pictures to go along with it, hopefully to inspire your next renovation!

Concrete and Textures

As we showcased at Interiors Addict’s recent #BathroomAddict event, you don’t have to be conventional with your tile choice. Go big, bold and beautiful instead. This creates warmth and depth in an otherwise sterile room and can create a feature in a room that sometimes can lack personality. The amazing concrete tile we used in our Lindfield bathroom makeover creates such a rich, gritty texture, keeping the bathroom modern and edgy, while still being completely functional and practical.

Hotel Styling

This is one trend that isn’t going to dissipate fast. Hotel-style bathrooms can be identified by their luxe appearance, using the finest of finishings, effortlessly combining textures and colours to create a warm and rich room, still modern and clean. Inspired by your favourite deluxe hotel, whether it is The Belaggio or 1 Hotel Central Park, New York, or in the case of this Bondi bathroom makeover, The Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Pick and choose the best features from these bathrooms, whether it is the vanity, tile colour or the black trim, and make it your own — in the space you have.

Totally Decadent Bath Tubs

Large tubs have been on trend for bathrooms for some time now. Gone are the days of the shower-over-bathtub in a new renovation, and instead we are seeing bath tubs getting bigger and better than ever, becoming a total feature in a room. However be practical and consider the floor space you have. Will it overwhelm the space and would your family use a shower more? The bathroom is one of the most utilised spaces in your home.

Patterned Tiles

Whether it is a Moroccan style makeover, using a patterned Turkish tile, or whether it is using tiles to create patterns like chevron and herringbone, pattern is one of the biggest design trends in a bathroom right now. It is also an excellent judge of renovator – patterned tiles, particularly geometric patterns, are difficult to do, so if your renovator is working with this kind of pattern, you know they are worth their salt.

At the base of it all, any bathroom renovation is about creating your dream bathroom for you – whether it uses some of these trends, or none of them. It’s about making sure that your home is somewhere you want to come home to.

Removable wallpaper by some of Australia’s best creatives

Long gone are the days of plain striped and block colour wallpaper; now, wallpaper is art, it is removable and it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

One such business leading the pack is The Paper Merchants. Who, through partnerships with emerging artists have created a series of wallpaper prints that allow homeowners, renters and commercial clients the ability to frequently change their wall coverings with affordability and without damage.

[contextly_sidebar id=”s5jpbV3njTVkRYVPCI5NoTVmsJZhNGmp”]Started by friends Paul McKie, Myles Sharpe and Brenton Craig, the trio searched high and low for artists whose unique style could be translated into wallpaper. “Our artists play a big role in separating us from any other wallpaper suppliers,” says Paul. “Our launching artists all have very different processes in arriving at their finished artworks. This in itself gives the feeling of authenticity and consideration.”

With their debut collection including the works of six artists, The Paper Merchants team were very conscious of keeping the brief open. “We were very mindful in keeping our brief to the artists very liberal,” explains Paul. “We wanted their personal style to filter through to the finished wallpaper prints. Our only prerequisite was that we had the ability to tile their patterns or use full images across what we term as a ‘standard wall measurement’.”

With six diverse artists, who have created a handful of wallpapers each, there is everything from bright and loud prints to pastels, geometrics and florals. Applied and removed with water, the wallpaper is perfect for short or long-term use. It also has great environmental certifications, is responsibly sourced, odourless and Greenguard certified.

Real Living and Freedom launch new homewares range

Yesterday, Olivia and I attended the stunning launch event for Real Living magazine’s homewares range for Freedom. It was a gorgeous setting in the old school Palm House in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens, which suited the nostalgic collection perfectly.

Real Living Vignette

Mixing patterned pieces that look like they came from your nanna’s house or a cute country cottage with pops of more modern colour, leather and typography is what this collection does really well. Freedom homewares buyer Korryn Bentley, said: “Ever since we started working together we knew we wanted to create something really special that is the sum of both Real Living and Freedom. The collaboration brings a fresh new twist on homewares. It challenges the idea of a perfectly matched interior. We want you to embrace the mismatched, the cool and quirky, and really carve out your own style.”

Think classic checks in contemporary palettes, vintage-looking florals in new tones, lamps in retro cool colours and even furniture in the form of wire wear storage that’s a little industrial and edgy.

Real Living - Bedroom Option

“We welcome you to the 2015 Real Living for Freedom winter range, where the word “home” resonates with memories and emotions of a time gone by – a vintage vibe with a quirky element of playfulness,” said Deborah Bibby, editor-in-chief, of Real Living.

“I’m excited to see how customers bring the collection to life in their own homes with their individual styles — it’s warm, fun and a little bit eclectic, the way any home should be,” added Korryn.

Available in stores and online from Monday 6 April 2015.

Anna Spiro’s book: Absolutely Beautiful Things

Apart from the obvious, that this book will seriously brighten up any coffee table it graces, Anna Spiro’s first book, Absolutely Beautiful Things, is a delight. I read it over two days because I didn’t want to put it down. Not only is full of photos of wonderful colourful, delightfully (perfectly) mis-matching real homes, it’s also packed with great advice.

absolutely-beautiful-things

And if you want to create this unique look in your own home, there’s nobody more qualified to offer up their advice, so read up, take it all in and make notes!

Anna’s profile isn’t, in my opinion, as big as it should be. She isn’t a self-publicist like many other top interior designers and decorators (rightly or wrongly) but regardless, she has a cult following. I wasn’t, for example, sent a review copy or even a press release about this book, but I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it!

9781921383946-4

Anna’s look is full on colour and pattern, which is not for everyone, and is perhaps much better suited to Queensland, where she lives, then here in Sydney, for example. But whether you love it or not, Anna’s look is so different and so very her, it is really interesting to study how she puts things together and learn from it. What I love most about Anna’s philosophy is only having things that really mean something to you in your home, as well as how warm and cheerful her work is. It really does make me smile.

I won’t say that since reading Anna’s book I could pull off this kind of look anything like she does (she makes it look effortless but it’s only easy when you know how!) but I did pick up a few pointers which I think will make all the difference to my new home.

9781921383946-3

Of course, being published by Lantern, the book itself is beautifully designed. The cover was painted by Anna’s sister-in-law Pip Spiro (formerly Boydell).

I thoroughly recommend this book. The best price I found online was through Booktopia.

Ziporah towels: art for your bathroom

For a very long time there’s only been one clear choice for colourful and patterned bathroom towels and that’s Missoni! Now the 3 girls behind Ziporah are trying to change all that with a new Aussie brand.

Ziporah12-757x1024

We decided we would create towels together after recognising a gap in the market for colour, luxury and affordability. After frustrating shopping trips, visits to a trade fair here and there, industry research and loads of questions, things just naturally brought us together,” said their designer, Antoinette Murray.

ZiporahCollection

We decided Ziporah would create unique, artisan designed towels to “make over” a bathroom space, like a beautiful rug can do for a living room or cushions can do for a neutral sofa. We also agreed we would not compromise on quality.”

Mrs Darcy’s Kellie Collis: the stylish girl behind a stylish brand

Funky florals and pretty patterns, all with a healthy splash of colour, is a good description of Mrs Darcy’s range of cushions, textiles and other assorted treats.

Kellie Collis

Kellie Collis is the stylish mastermind behind the growing brand. Although she comes from a corporate background (you’d never know it to look at this fashionista!), Kellie has always had a passion for textiles and design, it just took a while for her to realise she could pursue it as a career. Over time, my desire and interest in forging a business out of my passion for this industry blossomed, and here I am!”

6 top tips for pattern and texture in your home, by Abigail Ahern

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of Brit Abigail Ahern and her bold, unconventional interior style, which tends to break every rule in the book, with gusto! I’m delighted she’s written these tips for Interiors Addict and shared photos from her home, and her sister Gemma’s, with us. “Pattern and texture are the herbs and spices of the decorating world,” she says. “They add instant pizzazz to a room, turning if from drab to fab in a second, and I am the hugest fan. The trick is to ditch everything you’ve ever been taught about combining. You won’t need to bring anything to the table other than the ability to think a little differently.”

Abigail’s pattern and texture tips

1. You can never (repeat never) overdose on texture. The more you add the more intriguing a room becomes. The key is to create as much friction as you can (bad in relationships, fundamental in interiors)! Mix rough with smooth, slubby with polished; it will never feel too much.

Abigail's own bedroom is a textural feast! I love it!
Abigail’s own bedroom is a textural feast! I love it!

2. You can mix as many patterns as you want (forget all that mumbo jumbo about combining small scale motifs mixed with large scale patterns). The game changer is to reign in the colour palette. Do that and you can mix to your heart’s content.

Florence Broadhurst patterns reborn as bed linen

Florence Broadhurst the Cranes bed linen

Legendary design maven Florence Broadhurst’s legacy of patterning has now been translated into beautiful dressings for the bedroom. The first ever collection of Florence Broadhurst bed linen and coordinating accessories features some of her best known designs. The Cranes, Kabuki, Chinese Key and Japanese Floral all feature.

Each quilt cover set, European and square cushion is uniquely printed with pearlised inks laid across 100 percent cotton sateen.

Florence Broadhurst Matelasse Coverlet

Florence herself loved to lavishly mismatch colour and pattern (as this collection allows), and many items have a contrasting reverse pattern for versatility. There are textured, appliqued, quilted, sequined, embroidered, pearlised and metallic finishes to coverlets, a variety of cushions, quilted throws and pillowshams.

Florence Broadhurst & Kate Spade

It’s been kept under wraps for months but Signature Prints have finally announced that Kate Spade New York is working with the Florence Broadhurst Library to create one-of-a-kind products for 2012. 12 of Broadhurst’s designs, owned by Signature Prints, have been selected to help Spade celebrate the year of the pattern.
