Art & nature combine to create gorgeous range of living decor

Our obsession with beautifully presented indoor greenery continues and we’re loving the latest interpretation of the trend, the Art-House Series. A collaboration between Melbourne mothers Sarah Triolo of Glasshouse Terrariums and artist Rachel Bainbridge, this new range offers low-maintenance living decor that fuses nature with art – terrariums, kokedama moss balls and air plants combine with contemporary resin art for a gorgeous result.

“Our Art-House Series currently consists of both a monochrome collection and a pastels collection with various resin art hanging platforms, a modern take on the vertical garden using resin artwork to hold air plants, placemats as bases for kokedamas and hand painted resin terrarium bases. We have created pieces that are fresh and original and full of heart. We would be proud to have these in our homes and we hope our customers feel the same,” says Sarah Triolo.

And if, like us, your thumb isn’t exactly green, this range is ideal. The abstract painterly qualities of the air plant wall hangings aside, we love that the plants survive literally on air! In addition, not only do these plants, terrariums and indoor plants generally require minimal maintenance (perfect for our time-poor lives), they also take up a small amount of space for something that can have such great visual impact. We love the abstract painterly qualities of the air plant wall hangings, made from waterproof resin. “Resin art is water resistant which is an important quality when being used with plants and the sleek glass-like finish is the perfect complement to a terrarium range,” says Sarah.

“We feel proud that each piece is completely handmade by ourselves, and that every piece we offer is unique.  We both feel very strongly about creating something that is of high quality and sustainable so that customers are buying a product that is made to last,” says Sarah.

Rachel, a qualified primary school teacher with a degree in visual arts and Sarah, a qualified veterinarian, both came to their individual business ideas while in the throes of new motherhood. Launching Glasshouse Terrariums just a year ago, Sarah’s business has been a success –  you can see her wares in person at Melbourne’s upcoming Finders Keepers Market in July of this year. Since leaving teaching behind, Rachel has developed a career as a practicing artist, held several exhibitions over the last couple of years and released a range of handcrafted homewares too.

Dinosaur Designs’ sculptural Flower collection

Sculptural and beautiful, the upcoming solo collection by Louise Olsen, creative director of Dinosaur Designs, sees floral forms reinterpreted and designed as stunning objects for the home and wearable pieces for the body.

Entitled Flower, the homewares collection brings large petal forms together to create a field of flowers, in pieces ranging from servers to flower-like plates. The vases resemble blossoming flowers, long and delicate in shape.

Bold opaques mix with the glowing transparent colours of pastel peach and green, and the warm purple swirl applied to the flower plates evokes the incredible spot-like markings of an orchid.

“This collection is about the sculptural forms of flowers, the unexpected nature of nature,” explains Louise. “It plays on that sense of wonderment that flowers gives us through their form, colour and scent”.

Pirdy: gorgeous resin homewares with a touch of glitter

I’ve been obsessed with resin ever since my mum brought home a box full of Dinosaur Design resin tumblers 10 years ago. Since then, resin has only become more popular and my love for it has not faltered! So when Jen and I were looking through the finalists for the Etsy Design Awards and came across the resin homewares and jewellery of Pirdy, we knew we had to showcase them.

il_570xN.644991010_srmg Started by Juliet Carr eight years ago, Pirdy was the result of a lot of things: Juliet leaving her job in visual merchandising, her wanting to work from home and her desperate desire to do something creative that she was in control of.

il_570xN.602283165_c67t

A lover of all things resin, it seemed like a natural niche to begin her creative career and years later, Juliet now has a large array of resin vases, bowls, wall decor and jewellery, that she sells through her Etsy store, Melbourne’s The Rose St. Artists’ Markets and retailers. “I’ve always loved resin,” explains Juliet. “It’s messy but so much fun. I know that there is a science to it, but when you mix two liquids together and they set hard, I always think it’s magic!”

il_570xN.645011950_fo54

Her latest success is her new resin bowls, which are both pretty and functional. Perfect for salt and pepper, holding jewellery or any little trinkets, they come in a mix of colours, including some with glitter (which are a favourite of Juliet, Jen and I!). “I love anything with glitter in it at the moment,” says Juliet. “I have the glitter bowls all over the house. And I must say as a whole, the bowls are the most fun to make. Resin is mixed with colour pigments and poured, it’s then set, hand sanded and polished. When I make the bowls with a mix of colours, it’s always exciting to see how they turn out!”

il_570xN.641672364_41mh

To get your hands on any of Juliet’s beautiful homewares visit her website and remember to vote for her in the Etsy Design Awards. But do it soon, because voting closes tomorrow!

Dinosaur Designs’ new Red range

Dinosaur Designs’ Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy have launched their new showcase colour range, Red. I’m not usually a fan of red, but we’re talking much more subtle than in-your-face Valentine’s Day red. Phew! Speaking of which, Happy Valentine’s, lovers!

The palette varies from deep reds and bright oranges to soft peaches, complimented by accents of cream and gold, which create harmonious colour relationships. New art range colours have also been developed, combining powerful reds and an earthy tortoiseshell.

A decade ago, Dinosaur Designs created a bespoke chess set with Louis Vuitton as a one‐off auction item for a grand charity event. Featuring oversized sculptural chess pieces in their signature, handcrafted resin and set in a bespoke Louis Vuitton trunk, the chess set remains one of the most exciting collaborations in the company’s history.

Only 8 sets have been produced, 2 in each of 4 colourways, ranging from organic putty neutrals to vivid orange, purple and blue tones. Designed by Stephen Ormandy, the set features an elegant black chess board which also acts as a case for the pieces.

A polished result which starts off as twigs

It’s hard to believe these handmade, fair trade pieces from Nicoya Furniture start life as twigs, isn’t it?

Ocean: the latest Dinosaur Designs collection, by Louise Olsen

Drawing upon inspiration from the ocean, a fierce yet gentle, natural and ever changing beauty, the latest Dinosaur Designs collection by creative director Louise Olsen, resembles sea forms.

dinosaur designs ocean 1

In the homewares range, vases and bowls resemble handmade shell forms. The natural colour of spotted patterned shells is cast upon vases and bowls. Platters form like waves and shells.

dinosaur designs ocean 2

Louise has introduced a dégradé colour technique, which is applied using deep-sea blues and warm coral colours, resembling the depth and lightness of the tide sweeping in and out. To complete the palette, bright yellow and soft sandy tones have been incorporated.

Dinosaur Designs’ new monchrome homewares

Just when you think Dinosaur Designs have done everything gorgeous there is to do with colour, they go and wow me with black and white. Not only is the monochrome palette timeless and easy to incorporate in most homes, I absolutely LOVE what’s going on here with the splattered effect. Divine.

As with everything they do, no two pieces are exactly the same, and I love that.
