Like us, we’re sure you’ve wondered how to create a dream bathroom. Well sit tight because, thanks to Reece, we’ve got the skinny, straight from the mouths of Dean and Shay themselves.

Q: How do you create an award winning bathroom using tiling and taps?

Dean & Shay: We chose tiles and tapware that was neutral – greys, white and black, softened by timber. We also ensured the feature tiles were used minimally to avoid a cluttered look. Don’t be afraid to use large tiles in a small space and make the tapware your main statement piece.

Q: What was it that made your bathrooms such an all-out success?

Dean & Shay: We chose to make the tapware the feature of our bathrooms – this gave a sense of sophistication to the bathrooms without relying on the overpowering nature of bold feature tiles.

Q: What’s your style advice for home renovators looking to create their dream bathroom?

Dean & Shay: Create that high end feel on a lower budget with things like matte black tapware and accessories that hold hints of metallic.

Q: When it came to creating your bathrooms, were you responding purely to aesthetics or were you also thinking about commercial factors like sale at auction?

Dean & Shay: We think that it is easy to create a neutral bathroom that appeals to a broad market, but it’s harder to create a bathroom that isn’t polarising or dated but still exudes that high end quality. I feel like we nailed this concept through our tapware and accessory choices.

Q: When it comes to buying a house, how important is the bathroom in a buyer’s purchasing decision?

Dean & Shay: Really important! Bathrooms deliver a sense of luxury to a buyer, so if the buyer loves the bathroom they can easily overlook a paint colour they don’t like in the bedrooms or living areas.

Q: If you could do it all over again, what are the things you’d keep or change?

Dean & Shay: We love every bathroom we created, they are timeless yet still bang on trend, so we wouldn’t change anything!

With so many home renovation shows on television and with ready access to design imagery by way of blogs, Instagram and Pinterest, there’s little doubt your head is swimming with information and ideas.

So, to make it easier for you, here are my five top tips for injecting some luxe to your bathroom this summer.

1. Marble

This year has been all about marble, and your bathroom should be no exception. Marble is an age-old material that adds an element of elegance and style to your interior. Its timelessness as a material also means it is set to have longevity as a design trend.

Whether it’s rectangular floor to ceiling marble tiles, or mosaic marble feature tiles, your bathroom will exude instant luxury. But if changing up the tiles isn’t an option, opt for a smaller scale marble feature, such as a trinket bowl, soap dish or pendant light.

2. Matte black and white tapware

While white on white bathrooms are a safe no-fail design choice, which is unlikely to date, recently we have seen a big shift in bathroom colour palettes. We are seeing more bold choices such as black, navy and grey tones, creating drama, richness and a bit of sass.

If you’re bold enough and looking for an alternative to traditional chrome or stainless steel tapware, add a spunky matte black or matte white mixer, basin or vanity to create a sophisticated but edgy bathroom.

3. Light it up

While down lights are a popular and practical way to light up any space, adding varying types of lighting is the ideal way to create mood, interest and ambience. This is especially true in bathrooms. For me, bathing or showering is not just about getting clean but about unwinding from the day. You should have the option here to switch off the down lights and flick on a staggered cluster of pendants hanging over one side of your vanity or a couple of wall lights hanging either side of your mirror.

You may also include an LED strip in your shower nook and under your vanity, which combined with your pendants or wall lights, will create the perfect type of light for shower/bath time. Decorative lights such as pendants are also effective at adding another dimension to your bathroom and breaking up all the hard surfaces.

4. Bright coloured towels

Creating a fresh look in your bathroom doesn’t have to break the bank. You can achieve a new look by making small changes like displaying a new set of good quality, coloured towels. Personally, I only use dri.glo bath towels, which are made with premium Australian cotton, which means higher absorbency and a softer touch, and come in a huge range of colours.

5. Add a little greenery

With backyards becoming smaller and in many cases, non-existent, we are seeing indoor plants becoming increasingly popular. Greenery is an essential ingredient to the success of any interior space, including the bathroom. It is the final touch that makes a space feel complete. Whether you choose to create a high-impact green wall, place single potted plants on the vanity, or hang a group of ferns from the ceiling, plants are a simple and inexpensive way to add colour, life and vitality to your bathroom.

Designed by Wood Melbourne and available on The Block Shop, the handmade tapware is pure luxury. Made from reclaimed Blackbutt timber and raw brass, installation is quick and easy with minimal maintenance required.

With its distinguishing clean-cut handle and simple lines, the Mare Extended Basin Mixer by Fantini represents a new era in mixer designs. Featuring long curved lines with a distinguishing handle to balance the soft body shape, it is finished in the finest polished chrome. Designed and made Italy it retails for $695 from Rogerseller.

Also making an appearance on The Block (in Luke & Ebony’s main bathroom), the Milli Glance Wall Basin Mixer Set in Black ($799.99) from Reece is captivating from first look. Offering solid brass construction, it combines a luxuriously sleek design with crisp lines and gentle arcs.

A modern take on a classic style, the Maxum Basin Set, combines function, form and unpretentious fashion. With its solid brass construction, sweeping goose neck outlet, and laser etched hot and cold indicators, Maxum adds a high quality, tailored look to any bathroom. I’m loving the Milli Axon Basin Mixer in Rose Gold/Black, which is inspired by the beauty and perfection of a blade. A revolution in design, sheer lines are bought to life through the use of a slimline cartridge and solid brass construction. Available from Reece for $699.99.

The new iSpa Waterfall Basin Mixer by Gessi features a soft, sculptural look, where water cascades from the spout like a waterfall. With the standout stylistic feature of a rectangular shape, rounded at the corners as if smoothed by water itself, the iSpa shows the style and finesse you can expect from Italian designers. Available in chrome from Candana it retails for $924.

The Pinch Basin Set designed by Rogerseller, is truly unique. Representing the latest in contemporary architectural tapware, the elongated handle shape — seen in both the handle and the outlet — is perfectly complemented by a fine plated base. Available in graphite, burnished brass and rose gold, it retails for $695.

Michael Wilds wins Reece Bathroom Innovation Award 2015

Sculpture, sustainability and function prevailed in this year’s Reece Bathroom Innovation Award, which called on professional and student designers to conceive an innovative tapware concept for the contemporary bathroom environment.

Industrial designer Michael Wilds was named winner of the professional category, receiving a $10,000 cash reward and the opportunity to have his tap design prototyped by Italy’s largest tapware manufacturer, Nobilli. His winning design, Incline, combines sustainable water use features and a refined sculptural form to create a functional tap.

Judges admired the original thinking and space-saving minimalism of the design, which features a timed tap feature and visual countdown element that allows the user to monitor their water use through time. The tap’s striking design attracted the judges’ attention for its sculptural simplicity and architectural form.

Bryce winning design — Bryce Beard’s winning design

University of New South Wales fourth-year industrial design student, Bryce Beard, won the student category. Bryce’s winning tap design, Totus, will see him receive a $5,000 cash prize and a two-week internship with the design team of world-leading bathroom manufacturer, Roca. The internship will take place in Barcelona, Spain, where Roca is headquartered and promises to be a career-defining experience for Bryce.

His winning design takes inspiration from old thermostats, combining the function of adjusting water temperature and flow in a single conceptual mixer design. A special LED light feature provides a visual gauge for the user, with changing colour intensity representing different temperature levels.

Now in its tenth year, the BIA is one of Australia’s most respected product design competitions, encouraging and celebrating innovative bathroom design by providing a platform for entrants to share their talent and gain local and international exposure.

With myself busy moving house and Jen out for dinner with The Block judge Darren Palmer (surely that’s a good excuse for not watching!) neither of us got to enjoy the full episode. Lucky for you, I got up early and watched the reveal and my my, were there some gorgeous bathrooms! How the contestants manage to create these rooms in 72 hours I’ll never understand! Well, onto the judging…

Tim and Anastasia. Came 1st.

I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw Darren and Neale Whitaker squished together in the bathroom. It is tiny! But both judges agreed that while it was small it was perfectly formed and ticked all the boxes for functionality, practicality and still looking good! With some beautiful textures and luxury tapware, it was a huge improvement from the couple, who’ve come second last in both previous eliminations.

Ayden and Jess. Came 3rd.

I love anything and everything Moroccan, so I thought the tiles were absolutely gorgeous; but I had to agree with Neale that it was just a bit too much for a small space. Their mirror was also pretty special, but they lost points for not including any face level storage. As Neale put it, the space was more style over substance.

Ebony and Luke came last and were sent home.

Oh, I really felt for these two! To come so far and then get knocked out at the final hurdle would have to be devastating, especially when their room was unfinished. Darren liked the colour of the feature tile, but the compliments pretty much stopped there. There was no door, no shower screen and the vanity was incy. Darren even commented that the vanity was comical, what with the large-scale tapware and tiny sink.

Charlotte and Josh. Came 2nd.

Wow was the first word out of Neale’s mouth. Calm, serene and with a sense of zen, the space managed to feel soothing even though it was small. Large format tiles, timber, and beautiful tapware all complemented each other nicely, with the real standout being the custom-built, face level storage which was set into the wall. Very clever. They are definitely the couple to watch! As Darren said: “I had high expectations and they haven’t let me down.”

There’s not more you can want in a bathroom than space-saving designs and beautiful fixtures, and the new basin offerings by Kohler Company tick both those boxes.

Sometimes simplicity is best, with the new Stance tapware collection from Kohler a striking example of restraint and bold design.

The perfect statement for the contemporary bathroom, the single column with refined spout and joystick control is a beautiful example of the reworking of the classic elements of good design.
