The latest ways to display your greenery at home

There’s no doubt that greenery is a very cool trend right now – PANTONE did make it the colour of the year, didn’t they? However, the chic style goes so much further than just a swatch, with vases and planters hosting gorgeous green plants the coolest addition to any room.

It’s not all about aesthetics though, indoor plants have health benefits too – they use your expelled carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen, have been proven to sharpen focus and reduce airborne dust levels.

Planning your indoor garden yet? Well, make sure you’ve got the best in indoor plant style by checking out some of the best in planters and vases, brought to you by Life Instyle. The boutique trade fair is happening next month, with some of the country’s coolest creatives and designers showcasing their latest wares. The show is all about creative excellence and innovative style, so take a cue from these examples on what your indoors should be looking like:

Petite planters from Hammered Leatherworks

These porcelain and leather hanging planters from Hammered Leatherworks come in a variety of colours, so you’ll know they’ll work with whatever aesthetic you’re after.

Brass vases from Urban Eden

Urban Eden’s main aim is to get people into gardening and reconnected with nature – these brass vases look to do exactly that!

Teardrop vase from Stix & Flora

Stix & Flora is a family business run by mum Jules and daughter Em – these teardrop vases are bestsellers, and we can see why!

Glass vase by Koa by Kaitlin

Each of Koa’s pieces are all ethically hand carved, making your vase a unique place to host your greens.

Botanica

Expressing their appreciation for nature through industrial design, Lesley Williams and Simon Zappia established Botanica, a collection of objects that highlight both the tiny and delicate to the large and wondrous of the plant world. Inspired by vivariums and Wardian cases of the 1800s, their products deliver a tribute to nature’s most delicate botanical offerings with a contemporary feel. This year’s product collection includes: Sanctuary S, Sanctuary M (in Rainforest, Temperate and Arid) and the newly released Biodome.

Millie Archer offering aspirational homewares for under $100

Following 18 months of research Laura O’Keeffe and her partner Paul Jager pooled together their skills in business and marketing and their love of design to create beautiful, minimalist wares under their business, Millie Archer.

millie archer5

All with a vintage, scandi edge, the products are aspirational in style yet affordable, with pricing kept to under $100. “Every design is and will only be produced in limited production runs and all our pieces are modestly priced,” explains Laura. “A combination of uniquely designed feature pieces as well as tailored catalogue items form each collection. We hope the introduction of a single Millie Archer design will assist in changing the look and feel of every home or office.”

millie archer4

Designing cushions, throws, baskets, wall prints, drinkware (mugs and glasses), jugs, vases, terrariums, hanging planters and coasters, you can expect to find a new collection on the website with the turn of each season. Launching their first range just a few short months ago, it includes four distinct styles, Laura’s favourite being the Bear + Flamingo design, which involved a collaboration with Swedish artist Linda Otton. “After discovering Linda on Instagram in 2014 I immediately fell in love with her style and the ethereal aesthetic that came through her watercolours and composition. The Bear + Flamingo illustrations within the pieces in this collection were created exclusively for Millie Archer. Applied across cushions, mugs, coasters and on fine art wall prints, their simple nature and soft, feminine style add a scandi touch to the room.”

Also with a Geometric, Metallic and Arrow range, their debut collection is extremely expansive, but that doesn’t mean there’s not more designs in the works. “We’ll be releasing new pieces or a new range every four months or so and have our designs in place for the next few drops,” explains Laura. “This summer you’ll see citrus really come to the forefront of Millie Archer. We love lemons and lemon colouring, it just makes you feel all summery! We’re also investigating some pretty special glassware but that’s in the very early research and development phase.”

With the name Millie Archer signifying the coming together of the couple’s two favourite names, for them, it was very much like naming a child — proving just how much love they’ve put into the business. “Each design is given as much care and attention as we could possibly dedicate,” says Laura. “We hope you fall in love with them as much as we have.”

Introducing water-based terrariums, an Aussie first!

Don’t get me wrong I love receiving flowers, but after a few days when they start to wilt… well I have to admit the tree-hugging, animal-lover within finds it a little depressing!

The Glasshouse Co 2

Turns out others share the sentiment, but unlike me, they actually did something about it! Friends Anja Venn and Kate Turner launched The Glasshouse Co. earlier this year, an online store that exclusively stocks Box Gardens, also known as hydroponic terrariums.

What are hydroponic terrariums you ask? They’re plants that only grow in water, without soil and last for ages. “Unlike purchasing a bouquet of flowers your Box Garden can continue to brighten up your home or desk for months to come,” explains Anja. “Our hope is that once your succulent outgrows your terrarium, you can re-pot it into a larger container and then simply add a new plant to your Box Garden or something hand-picked from your garden!”

The Glasshouse Co Photos
What makes the Box Gardens completely unique is that the succulent plant is beautifully displayed in the top box, and the exposed roots, which are usually hidden, are visible in the water box underneath. “It’s a very new and fascinating concept,” says Kate. “Being able to see these plants in their complete and raw form, watching them change over weeks and months, and seeing new roots grow and emerge is very special.”

The Glasshouse Co 1

Each terrarium is individually handmade, uniquely gift wrapped in The Glasshouse Co.’s Sydney studio and carefully courier delivered to your door. The plants are all home-grown in Australia, able to survive without soil, and can flourish under the eye of the least green nimble amongst us.

The Glasshouse Co 1

Importantly, Anja and Kate are both passionate about giving back, donating 10% of all profits to charity. Having committed to doing this from the very first Box Garden they sold, they are excited to see the impact this will have as the company continues to grow. “The charity we are currently donating towards is a school for severely disabled children in South Africa called Pathways,” explains Kate. “Currently in South Africa there is no government funding for the severely disabled, so the school relies heavily on the generosity and charity of others. Our hope is that we are able to continue giving to other wonderful charities.”

How to build and maintain the perfect vertical garden

While city residences have limited outdoor space, that doesn’t mean us Aussies don’t want gardens and greenery! So if you want to create and maintain a successful vertical garden, keep the following tips in mind.

Garden location

The first thing to consider when you’re building a vertical garden is where you’ll put it. If you have an outdoor space, you can choose to build it against a wall, or you can construct a structure to hold it. If you don’t have a space outdoors, you can also build a garden indoors.

When you are choosing where to place your vertical garden, think about the kinds of plants you want. Plants require varying degrees of sunlight, shade, water, humidity levels, and space to grow. Certain plants may grow better in certain locations, depending on their needs.

Structuring a vertical garden

Once you have selected the perfect location for your vertical garden, it’s time to select the structure.

1. Hanging planters

Hanging your plants at different heights can allow you to create a vertical garden either indoors or outdoors. If you’re building your garden outdoors, look at existing structures that can be used for hangers or that can support hanging plants. Indoor gardens often hang from the ceiling or windows in order to be near the light.

2. Shelving

Another way to structure a vertical garden is with shelving. Remember that your plants will need room to grow to their full size and that shelving can block sunlight. Vintage furniture can be repurposed into a great garden shelving unit. If you’re looking to get creative, instead of planting your garden on the shelves, consider hanging them from the shelves.

3. Trellises

Depending on the kind of plants you want to grow, a trellis may be another option, especially for outdoor gardens. Certain food plants, like cucumbers and tomatoes, grow extremely well on a trellis because they like to spread out as they grow.

Choosing a planter

In addition to choosing a structure to hold your plants, you will need to pick the right planter for each plant.

1. Terrariums

Terrariums are one of the most modern ways to bring both style and nature into a home. They can be hung or placed on a shelf, and because terrariums are made of clear glass, a well put together terrarium can flourish without maintenance.

2. Pots, baskets and boxes

Pots, baskets and window boxes are some of the most common places that plants are grown on residential properties. Remember that they come in all shapes and sizes, and they can be placed on a shelf, hung, or even connected to a trellis for plants that expand beyond their containers.

3. Other options

One of the greatest parts of building your own vertical garden is that you can have fun with it! Sometimes, especially in small spaces, using shelves or traditional pots isn’t an option. What about growing plants in a shoe organiser? Or recycling an old dresser and using the drawers as planters?

Bowen & Kenneth: mason jar lights and DIY terrariums

I’m a sucker for anything quirky or vintage inspired, so I am very much in love with new online homewares boutique Bowen & Kenneth.

Mail Attachment

Featuring lights, birdcages and terrariums, partners Sam Pridmore and John McMahon were inspired to start the business after Sam underwent brain surgery late last year. “We both had an epiphany after getting such a shocking reality check,” he explains. “We realised that life is far too short to be doing something you don’t love and I was most definitely sick of being just another number in a huge retail store. So we started creating.”

The collection began with a single birdcage with an LED tree inside it, an idea Sam had while in hospital. After getting great compliments on their one at home, they started creating them for everyone and the range has naturally sprung from there.

bowen keenth

A favourite of mine and a best seller of theirs, are the terrariums. A fun and unique take on the resurging terrarium, they come in DIY packs, but when finished look as professional as anything store bought. While the DIY edge wasn’t the initial idea, Sam and John both agree it turned out better than expected.

bowen kenneth

“A friend wanted me to send her one (terrarium), so I went off to the local post office eager and excited,” says Sam. “When I arrived and explained to the man that I wanted to send the fragile vase but it could not be tipped upside down or on its side, he just laughed at me! He said I was crazy.

“I was devastated. My amazing terrariums were wonderful, but if I couldn’t send them in the post I couldn’t sell them on our website! So after brainstorming ideas including fake plants, glue and resin, we finally came to the conclusion that we should make the terrariums into DIY packs and send everything in its own little package. We figured if we enjoyed making the terrariums ourselves, our customers would too!”

With simple how-to-guides on their website, even those without the DIY gene (myself included) can manage.

Photos: The finished Palm Beach Apartment!

We put the finishing touches to the Interiors Addict/Nest Designs apartment project we’ve been working on last Thursday night to host opening drinks and reveal the transformation. Here are the photos you’ve been waiting for! We know many of you have been following its progress and the reality behind the scenes of a reno, but what everyone really wants to see are the after shots, let’s face it!

The living area

Emma Blomfield from Nest Designs did a fantastic job furnishing and styling the apartment and I think this living area shows how she nailed a coastal holiday apartment vibe without falling into dodgy, overly-beachy territory (I think we’ve all seen that on a weekend away)!

Palm beach nest designs - low res-4

While there it was great to reference the stunning Palm Beach location here and there, she definitely got the balance just right. Do you agree?
