Covet My Coffee Table: With Have You Met Miss Jones

Have You Met Miss Jones first came to my attention many years ago when I was working in women’s magazines. I loved their wares from the start – with more than a subtle nod to seventies ceramics, the colour palettes and retro detailing have always been on point. So, it’s with much excitement that we bring you the coffee table styling of the owner, Jennifer Jones.

A mix of books, greenery and plenty of ceramics (of course), Jennifer’s coffee table doesn’t disappoint. “We love books in our family and so there are always piles of books on the coffee table, ranging from design and cookbooks to our daughter’s favourites. As a mad ceramic collector, I also use the coffee table to display my newest acquisitions. These amazing blue pieces are from a weekend I spent in Chiang Mai last month, hand picking items for our recently opened Bondi store,” says Jennifer.

“We love plants too and the recycled rubber pot from Garden Life houses a chalk stick succulent which is toddler friendly and robust! The little fabric bunny is one of a series from a divine shop in Seminyak which sells the cutest baby clothes. Teddie, our daughter, loves them.”

Jennifer Jones in her lounge room

The space is a constantly changing tableau – reflecting Jennifer’s changing tastes. “Being in the homeware industry our house is constantly changing. I can’t help myself when I see a new trend that I love emerge! The coffee table is a great space to draw attention to the things we love most at that time so it tends to change at least every few months,” says Jennifer.

And rather than one coffee table, Jennifer’s lounge room includes two positioned together. “We wanted to have a large table to gather around. We bought it from our fabulous friend David at Orson & Blake. We love it as it houses lots of books underneath and the marble top gives a great sense of style to our living room.”

Jennifer’s daughter Teddie and her favourite things feature on the coffee table

With a toddler in the house (something Jen and I know all about!), the coffee table is not only robust but highly functional too. “I think it needs to be 100 per cent functional and in our house, it needs to be able to take a bit of a battering! We spend a lot of time around the table, usually eating meals sitting on cushions on the floor with Teddie or playing with her musical instruments or drawing. I wanted something neutral as we tend to change the style of our living room every year at least. It needed to work with a multitude of rugs and soft furnishings.”

Gorgeous ceramics abound

As for styling tips, Jennifer is a fan of discreet storage. “A great box or small lidded basket is perfect for hiding remotes and bits and pieces. We have printed polaroid size pics from our family Instagram so a great bowl to display those in is a cute way to have photos at easy reach that isn’t a device,” says Jennifer. She believes books (with an ornament on top) plus something living are essential too.

“Fresh flowers are the ultimate but with a small child, a plant is more stress-free and the health benefits cannot be undervalued. This is usually corralled in a great and generously proportioned tray that can double for snacks on the couch too.”

Have You Met Miss Jones’ new range inspired by Paris

Ceramics purveyor Have You Met Miss Jones has a new range out for summer, inspired by its founder Jennifer Jones’ recent trip to Paris. “The eclectic streets of the Marais district really motivated me to design this range,” she says. “I stayed near the oldest planned square in Paris, the Place des Vosges and wandered the streets of the historic arrondissement, soaking up its quirky yet classic vibe.”

The adorable ‘Madame Daisy’ ‘Cheeky Dog’ and ‘Mr Jacques’ vases

Titled ‘Le Marais’ after Paris’ most stylish quarter, the new range features graphic patterns (including stripes and polka dots) and quirky faces too — my favourite part of the collection. ‘Mr Jacques’ and ‘Madame Daisy’ were inspired by the Parisians that fill the streets of Le Marais and have been made into gorgeous vases and hanging planters.

“Everything from the street art to the cafes, to the chic fashion and bold storefronts spoke to me and I knew it would translate into a great collection for the Have You Met Miss Jones customer,” says Jennifer, who found inspiration in the store fronts too. “They provided endless detail that was ripe for reinvention on bowls and trays in the prints and plains range,” says Jennifer.

‘Miss Lashes’ hanging vase & ‘Green Dream’ ‘Pavement’ & ‘Melon Ball’ vases

Known for their beautiful handmade ceramics, that often have a seventies vibe, the Sydney brand is always looking at ways to change things up. “With the roots of the brand firmly planted in ceramics we are always pushing the envelope of how we can reinvent the medium. When designing our products, we always ask three questions: Is it functional? Is it beautiful? And, does it make us smile?” says Jennifer.

Mexicana meets copper at Have You Met Miss Jones

There really is something for everyone in the latest range from Have You Met Miss Jones with several key trends covered off. “We have created this new collection from inspiration around the world,” says creative director Jen Sampson. “We always try and offer a diverse and global perspective to our ranges, taking cues from the simplest of materials like wood carving and clay pottery; artisanal handicrafts that are as old as time and applying these to today’s trends and colour palettes.

Group18[2]

“The ability to create new and unique looks from across our portfolio of products is what gives the team here at HYMMJ the biggest thrill. We love pulling together existing pieces and adding chic new items, creating a whole updated story that is collected and curated, just like our customers do at home.”

Group22[2]

Using the fun and colourful Mexican Fiesta as a leaping off point, they played with saturated reds, pinks and yellows. The Mexican look includes an Otomi and Aztec print series that have been popular and a new skull lamp which is flying off the shelves.

TT044_0613[2]

Then kinfolk trend sees earthy tones of wood, browns, green, faux bois, bone china and a new metal range of copper and enamel boxes. “The copper range is selling out as fast as we can re-stock it!”

DP041_0302[2]

Jen says they always like to have some kind of nautical presence in their ranges as it’s a key look within Australia and reflects our casual lifestyle. “This season, we have added a popular anchor vase and whale lamp which people are loving. We have played with new materials and developed a rope cage lamp that can be hung or knotted on a surface. It imbues a casual industrial luxe which is always trending.”

This range will be available from mid September with the rope lights available from November.

Have You Met Miss Jones launch biggest range yet

Have You Met Miss Jones (HYMMJ) is a force to be reckoned with. Opening back in 2006, the homewares brand has gone from strength to strength ever since.

have you met miss jone 5

Today, it launched its biggest range yet, featuring over 650 products that span from bowls to wall art to lighting. Famous for its vintage style and use of white bone china, this year’s range has expanded to include a modern geometric influence as well as featuring new materials.

Have you met miss jones 5

“We have pushed the bone china into a different direction this season with some more streamlined, contemporary designs,” explains creative director Jennifer Sampson. “We are exploring brand new mediums in coloured porcelain, stone and earthenware with exciting new glaze techniques we haven’t used before.”

These new glazes focus on an Australiania chic theme, with rich indigo and oceanic blues being a feature; a watercolor theme is also a prominent aspect of the range.

Have you met miss jones 2

But with such a large collection, even if blues and watercolor aren’t your thing, you are bound to find something that meets your aesthetic. “So many looks can be derived from all our collections,” says Jennifer. “We like to cater to different tastes and make updating your interior effortless and fun – we do all the hard work for you!”

have you met miss jones 6

For HYMMJ, it is all about striving to maintain an accessible aesthetic, creating unique and affordable designs that can lift your interior, and as Jennifer sums it up: “We simply wouldn’t put our name on a design we wouldn’t own.” Her favourite would have to be the geometric ceramic wall art (below), a novel idea that allows the owner to play designer at home.

Have you met miss jones

“You receive six triangular pieces in a box and can hang them however you like on your wall, we hope people embrace the idea and run with it. It’s called our DNA chain and customers can collect several sets and form unique wall art, tailored to their needs and space.”

Photos: The finished Palm Beach Apartment!

We put the finishing touches to the Interiors Addict/Nest Designs apartment project we’ve been working on last Thursday night to host opening drinks and reveal the transformation. Here are the photos you’ve been waiting for! We know many of you have been following its progress and the reality behind the scenes of a reno, but what everyone really wants to see are the after shots, let’s face it!

The living area

Emma Blomfield from Nest Designs did a fantastic job furnishing and styling the apartment and I think this living area shows how she nailed a coastal holiday apartment vibe without falling into dodgy, overly-beachy territory (I think we’ve all seen that on a weekend away)!

Palm beach nest designs - low res-4

While there it was great to reference the stunning Palm Beach location here and there, she definitely got the balance just right. Do you agree?

My winter warmer picks for The Home and a stunning country photoshoot

I was delighted when The Home asked me to pick some of my favourite products for a special winter warmer sale (starting today) and to join them on a photoshoot on location to bring them to life. Isn’t the end result stunning? I’m so in love with this clever photo!

the home winter warmer interiors addict 1

I headed straight to some of my favourite places, like Cadrys rugs and Have You Met Miss Jones to pick some cosy and colourful items. I’ve always loved the look of layered rugs but never tried this in my own home so it was fun to pick several to work together. I think this shoot goes to show that mix and match can totally work, and it’s all about contrast and texture. And how about that lamp? I’m buying one of those babies for myself!

the home winter warmer interiors addict

As for these beautiful images, a LOT of hard work and talent went into them behind the scenes, which I got to watch, but cannot take any credit for (apart from putting the flowers in the vase and making the tea for the cup on the tray…)! Joining me at the gorgeous property in the Hunter Valley were The Home’s stylist Marj Silva, photographer Lisa Zhou and buyer Emma Blomfield (also stylist at Nest Designs). They made that picture happen, and no, it really isn’t glamorous! Unless of course you count climbing on scaffolding and holding boards up on the other side of windows to stop pesky sun rays coming through and spoiling the shot glamorous!

Folded Corners: this month’s Real Living

Welcome to a new feature on Interiors Addict called Folded Corners. What is she on about now, you ask? Well, every time I buy a new magazine, I end up folding over the corners of each page I find something I want to buy. It’s an expensive business. Clearly I don’t buy all of them or I’d never have any money, but it’s a fun passtime.

So I thought why not share my favourites with you each time a new issue hits my mailbox? Today I am starting with Real Living September 2012. That’s this one:

Subscribers already have theirs but I don’t think it’s on shelves until Monday. It has a fab neon cover and a $100,ooo giveaway with some awesome prizes up for grabs. There’s also a fab feature where you can see inside the homes of some of the country’s top stylists, including belle’s interior design editor Steve Cordony. I should also mention my interior designer friend Darren Palmer has his first project in Real Living this month (page 136), and it’s a very nice one indeed!

Here’s what I’m coveting from the current issue and where you can find it online…

Page 56: Origami crease vase from Have You Met Miss Jones

… and Copa lamp from Domayne (that was a good page!)

Page 59: Faceture Tall Vase in pink from The Minimalist (whose products are scattered throughout the entire magazine!)

Page 62: Apple tree scientific botanical wall print from Vintage & Nostalgia Co.

Page 133: Alexandra von Furstenburg “Fearless” acrylic tray from Peters of Kensington

What did you like in this issue? Will you be getting your wallet out come pay day?

Loving the colour from Have You Met Miss Jones

Have You Met Miss Jones is best known for its white bone china homewares but the latest collection contains some great colourful pieces. I love these vases and I’ll be buying a few of these cute little bowls for keeping rings, salt flakes, and paperclips in! The possibilities are endless!

And don’t worry, Jennifer’s still producing more of the popular bone china too. Buy online at www.haveyoumetmissjones.com.au and read my interview with Jennifer Jones here.

Home & Giving trade fair favourites

Despite my best intentions I only made it along to one of the three trade fairs in Sydney this week and it was Home & Giving. I think stylists, decorators, retailers and buyers across the country are probably breathing a collective sigh of relief and pouring themselves a large glass of wine this evening. It’s been full on!

I really enjoyed Home & Giving. My favourite stand belonged to Have You Met Miss Jones. I had a great chat with owner Jennifer Jones, who seemed to be run off her feet taking orders all day. And it’s no surprise as her new stock is gorgeous. I’ve long been a fan of her bone china ornaments but now I’m eyeing off some colourful clay pottery, especially the orgami range of vases.

My favourite new discovery was Picket Fence Imports (their website doesn’t do their stock justice), where I drooled over vintage glass (like the 1920s jars below), baskets full of industrial bobbins and piles of old crates (including Coca Cola crates), most of which is imported from the US. TO DIE FOR. A stylist’s dream PLUS no minimum order!

I loved these giant glass bottles at Villa Maison.

And I was really surprised by how nice these battery operated flameless candles from Enjoy Lighting were. They even smell! Seriously, they’re good. Check them out. And this is a great little business success story too. They’re exporting them all over the world.

Which fairs did you go to and how were they? I heard nothing but good things about Life InStyle.
