Serviced apartments Sydney: Three new design-led ones

Based on a similar concept in Paris, III Rooms Sydney has just launched, offering serviced apartment accommodation with a super stylish twist. Fittingly located in the Paris end of Potts Point (in a heritage listed building on the corner of Macleay Street and Challis Avenue), the three European style apartments have been decked out by three renowned Australian design houses – Cult Design, MCM House and Jardan. It’s the perfect city stay for design lovers, and that’s before you consider the fabulous restaurants, wine bars and boutiques nearby.

Inspired by the iconic 3 Rooms Paris (self-contained accommodation curated by fashion designer Azzedine Alaia), the apartments recreate the ‘unique and perfectly imperfect detail’ of apartment living in Paris, Milan or Venice. Each apartment has gorgeous period details including sash windows and high ceilings as well as an abundance of natural light.

All three have been filled with a stylish curation of furniture, styling pieces and original artwork. And the best part is that everything inside the apartments is available for purchase – it’s the perfect way to try before you buy!

Jardan’s new Sydney flagship is a work of art

At the core of furniture and lighting brand Jardan is a passion for family. Every product is made to be loved and lived with; to grow and change with families over generations.

It is that outlook, which inspired the layout of Jardan’s new Sydney flagship store, which opened in Paddington at the end of last month. Designed by IF Architecture, the space draws on the country’s most influential creative families for inspiration.

“Colour and family are big parts of the Jardan story,” says IF Architecture principal Iva Foschia. “So looking at Sydney families I was immediately inspired by the work of Brett Whiteley and his muse, daughter Arkie. Brett was completely inspired by Arkie and said that he couldn’t work without her, so there was a lovely connection with Jardan, being a family business. Marion Hall Best ran a beautiful store too, her and her daughter had a little interiors shop not too far from the Jardan showroom in Sydney, and similarly they worked together for years and had a real community minded approach.”

The new showroom is at Alderstein House, an old Art Deco building, which was home to the Ariel Bookshop for more than 30 years. With a focus on colour, over two levels you’ll notice subtle transitions between whites, blues, greens, pink, greys and blacks. “Colour is expressive light and Sydney has light like no other place in Australia,” says Iva. “So we wanted to use a palette derived from the tastes and styles of iconic Sydney creative families, and in turn, find something unique to Jardan.”

Where to buy Australian bed linen online: 2017 update

Way back in 2014, when Tony Abbott was PM, Ellen DeGeneres took that epic celeb-filled selfie and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin ‘consciously uncoupled,’ Interiors Addict had a milestone of its own… we produced one of our most clicked on articles ever: The 10 best places to buy Australian bed linen online.

Now, three years on, we thought it was about time we revamped the list. So here’s our favourites for 2017…

Jardan: You most likely associate Jardan with super stylish Australian furniture, but their bedding offering is of equal wow-factor. Coming in both brushed cotton and 100% linen, the divine stonewashed colours are available in solid and striped iterations.

Jardan

Kesem Boy: A newcomer to the scene, it’s the Sydney label’s fun but subtle patterns that caught our attention… perfect for those neutral lovers who are becoming that little bit daring! Made from 100% cotton sateen, they offer throws and cushions to finish the look.

Kesem Boy

L&M Home: Always reliable, L&M Home (formerly Linen and Moore) have all the latest trends covered for your bedroom, lounge and dining table. We always look forward to their new catalogue! With a design team based in Melbourne, their philosophy is around creating everyday luxury for your home.

L&M Home

Kas: Firstly, the brand is one for colour lovers, their bedding is bold, graphic and vibrant. Secondly, it’s one for the bargain hunters! Hurry, there’s an epic sale currently on.

Kas

Hunting for George: In my opinion a brand that can do no wrong! With bedding made from linen and cotton sateen and stylish accessories – like woollen blankets and throws – you can get your whole bedroom look with a click of the mouse.

Hunting for George

The Pillowslip Store: As the name suggests, these new kids on the block specialise in extra large pillowslips, which look as good on a queen bed as they will on your king. No more too-short pillows (they sell the inners too) and the designs are just fab. They come in plain colours too. We love the gingham but there’s something for everyone and it encourages low-commitment, affordable mixing and matching without changing your entire bed linen!

The Pillowslip Store

R & R Bedding: offers a considered edit of 100% French linen pillowcases and duvet covers of the very best quality and cutting edge design. Designed in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, R & R are bringing back the traditional craft of embroidery in an untraditional way: all linen pillowcases are designed to be embroidered with whatever you please (initials, sayings, your favourite Kanye lyrics), for a good night’s sleep with a side of humour. R & R makes the perfect gift for weddings, engagements, the person who has everything or as a well deserved gift to yourself.

R&R Bedding

The Jersey Company: A little bit different, the bedding is made from soft and stretchy t-shirt material, otherwise referred to as T-SHEET™. Think snuggling up at night in your favourite oversized tee! With no strict sheet sets, it’s all about mixing and matching with a range of beautiful neutrals.

The Jersey Company

Shannon Fricke: Brimming with exotic patterns, colour and a distinct boho vibe, the brand is the brainchild of stylist Shannon Fricke. A personal favourite of mine, the cotton is super soft and most designs feature that little bit something, from tassels to velvet accents.

Shannon Fricke

Goosebumps: It’s no surprise Goosebumps got their start in kids bedding with their adult’s range being playful, colourful and best of all reversible. They also have a sale on, so jump online quick smart!

Goosebumps

Sanctuary Boutique Linens: Collaborating with local and international artists, the family-owned brand brings art and design into your home. With refined yet eclectic patterns, look carefully and you’ll spot skulls paired with roses and toucans matched with tigers!

Sanctuary Boutique Linens

Linen House: With an impressive number of different styles and trends, the family-owned business offers everything from tribal textures to velvets and knits detailed with pom-poms and tassels. It’s a brand that’s sure to bring every bedroom idea to life. And between you and me, the quilt cover below has to be one of my all time favourites!

Linen House

Miss Bettina: A modern take on classic floral bed linen, the boutique label features bold hand-drawn prints on reversible quit covers. Made from 100% cotton sateen, they are perfect for those prone to allergies and best of all they’re on sale!

Miss Bettina

We are still huge fans of all the bedding brands mentioned in our original post, so don’t forget to check them out here.

We hope you found this list useful. Please let us know who you’d add!

Jardan’s ‘Flannies’ bedding inspired by the Aussie favourite

Inspired by Australians’ penchant for flannelette pyjamas, the ‘Flannies’ bed linen collection is a decidedly lo-fi turn for Jardan, a brand we’ve come to associate with super stylish Australian furniture. But while the range is inspired by the Aussie favourite, it’s crafted from brushed cotton, has a pretty luxurious finish and we love the idea of snuggling up in a set of these – particularly over winter.

01_jardan_flannies_lightstripe

Just as flannelette pyjamas get better with washing, these sheets will too – the more you launder them, the softer they become. And while flannelette may conjure memories of pilling, this range is lo-fi luxe and has been created with a high-quality cotton.

03_jardan_flannies_lightmarle

Shrugging off any lumberjack associations, there isn’t a check in sight! The collection pairs gorgeous texture with a neutral colour palette that features grey marle with soft white and dark inky tones – all of the colours are available in solid and striped iterations. In addition, the 100 per cent cotton fabric is woven in Europe before being washed and softened to remove excess lint and also to recreate the worn-in, sumptuous feel of the classic fabric.

06_jardan_flannies_darkstripe

The collection is comprised of pillowcases, fitted and flat sheets and quilt covers that feature useful details such as labels showing the bedding’s size and extra buttons on the doona covers. Our favourite feature is the clever tags that show the orientation of the fitted sheets – what a fabulous idea! How many times have you fitted one end of your fitted sheet only to find it doesn’t fit and needs to be rotated?!? While it may only cost you a minute, personally we’d rather be sleeping than messing with our sheets.

04_jardan_flannies_lightstripe

Available in a range of sizes from single through to super king, the sets also come packaged in a lovely self-fabric bag too.

Take 5 with Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors

Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best gift they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Julia Green, stylist extraordinaire and founder of Greenhouse Interiors.

julia green 1

1. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

Pardon the cliché, but without a shadow of a doubt my children. They bring me more happiness (and admittedly grief!) than any object. They make me feel better about everything, they reflect all of my values and they are my best buddies. Just one hug in their arms and I go to jelly. Babies don’t fall off trees (as I found out the hard way) and I feel very blessed to have helped make two healthy little souls — that’s a lot to be grateful for. So thanks hubby for the part you played too. They are the best gift I could ever ask for.

2. What three people would be at your perfect dinner party?

My mum, for her hilarity and gregarious non-judging ways. She is a hoot, and someone I am completely at ease with. If Patrick (from Offspring) was still alive, I would have invited him just to look at… but he’s dead. So perhaps Nina could come instead (in character because she was funny). And don’t ask me why, but I think I want to meet Guy Sebastian. Is that just random? He seems so lovely, and Mum and I could crank out some good karaoke with him, as we are partial to a bit of that after a few vinos together (she does the harmony).

3. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I have been handed some pearls of wisdom over the years, that’s for sure. But my mother taught me from a young age to back myself, trust my gut feeling and to never give up. I now pass those values onto my own kiddliwinks.

4. What is your favorite shop?

Well funny you should ask as I just launched my own Greenhouse Interiors online store, so I am going to unashamedly say my own. I have had the honour of representing a group of insanely clever artists here in Australia for over five years and their talent has always blown me away. My own home is a shrine to their work, so I can say hand on heart, a store that supports them and their genius creativity is a place I would personally want to shop day and night!

5. What is your favourite piece of furniture you own?

Oh that’s like asking me to choose a favourite child… impossible! I love my Jardan bed and just wish I could spend more time in it. I treasure a host of beautiful original artworks from Belynda Henry, Ali McNabney-Stevens, Prudence Caroline and Armelle Habib, but my latest love is Rabbit Girl, a green resin sculpture from Gilli and Marc that sits atop my concrete hearth in the lounge room. Oh, and I adore my new black and white awning on my deck and my vertical garden. And I could keep going!

Jardan’s flagship store is more like a home than a showroom

After the success of their two retail stores in Sydney and Brisbane, furniture company Jardan have opened a flagship in their hometown of Melbourne. Located on Church Street Richmond, the two-level, 800 square metre store is in the heart of the city’s furniture and interiors precinct.

JardanShowroom_4

More like a contemporary home than a showroom, the space is divided into an open plan kitchen, library, indoor courtyard and a fun and colourful kids’ space. The perfect environment to showcase their evolvement beyond furniture, the store showcases Jardan’s most covetable classics, introduces their new collection and launches a curated collection of homewares from local and international artisans.

The 2014/15 collection designed by Jardan Lab, made its debut in-store. The collection features timber furniture finished with natural oil, that has a beautiful tactile feel, alongside oversized modular sofas and refined armchairs. The Jardan lighting range is extended with new brass pendants, glass pendants and turned timber lamps, all designed and made in Melbourne.

You’ll also find their new homewares range, featuring bed linen, locally made ceramics, Italian cookware and cutlery, handmade cushions and blankets from Argentina, jewellery, Australian-made surfboards and a collection of art, photography and illustrations.

JardanShowroom_2

Having been in the business for 25 years, Jardan furniture is built to last a lifetime and captures the essence of a stylish and relaxed contemporary Australian lifestyle. Long distinguished for their sustainability record, they have achieved Australia’s highest possible environmental rating, including being accredited as a Carbon Neutral organisation this year.

Jardan finally open its doors to the public in Sydney & Melbourne

Jardan, one of Australia’s most coveted furniture brands, is finally opening its doors to the public in Sydney and Melbourne. For the first time the showrooms, in Rosebery NSW and Mount Waverley VIC, will open their doors to the public, a privilege previously reserved for architects and interior designers.

Jardan_22_03_2012_003

For more than 3 decades, the family owned and run business has built a strong reputation as one of the country’s finest furniture designers and producers. Brothers Nick and Mike have grown the business from its humble beginnings, with just 8 staff in 1997 and more than 100 today.

10 things people get wrong in their homes and how to fix them quickly & easily

1. Hanging artwork too high. I see it all the time and I’m afraid I will go to my friends’ homes and point this out (they thank me for it, most of the time). There must be something in human nature that says hang it up high, but think about it: art is there to look at, so it should be at eye level. Stick to this rule and you’ll find it all works much better. Go and have a look at where your art is. Is it too high? Does it make sense?

2. Buying rugs too small and placing furniture around them, not on them. My rule is this: buy rugs as big as you can afford. Put your furniture ON them, not around them. There are always exceptions to every rule but, in general, this approach looks and feels much better, grounds your furniture and defines spaces within multi-use open plan areas like living/dining rooms.

3. Forgetting about lighting. Lighting is key. It’s so important when it comes to creating a layered interior. It’s another layer all on its own. Overhead lighting, in most living areas, sucks. It might work in kitchens and bathrooms but it is often too harsh in living areas and does little to create ambience. Consider table and floor lamps at different heights and brightnesses to mix it up. Install dimmer switches where you can.
