Australian bed linen: Autumn’s best new collections!

With summer on the wane, and winter not too far away, autumn is a fabulous time to get your bedroom ready for the cooler months. It’s seemingly also the most popular season for new bedding launches – coincidence much? I think not! From the inimitable Rachel Castle’s latest creations, to gorgeous oversized blooms at Linen House, the statement floral trend is certainly one with legs.

Castle & Things ‘Little Garden’ range: The Sydney bedding wunderkind has excelled herself with this latest design. Hand drawn by Rachel Castle herself (with watercolour, acrylic, pencil, texta, crayon, pastel and gouache), the whimsical floral design is heavenly. The range is complemented by a gorgeous creamy eggshell and black spotty linen.

Linen House A/W 2020 ‘Romantic Floral’ collection: The Dutch masters and French Impressionists provided plenty of inspiration for this new bloom-focused range. It also contains a modern take on Hawaiian print too.

Aura Halo organic bed linen: The first range of organic bed linen for the brand, the collection is finished with a light stonewash for a matte look and soft hand feel. The colour palette is beautiful; there’s tobacco, rosewater, eucalypt, pebble and white. We’re hard pressed to choose a fave!

Logan & Mason AW 2020 ‘Back in Bloom’ collection: From large scale hand-drawn blooms (for an utterly maximalist vibe), to a painterly pastel vibe, there’s flowers aplenty in this new range.

Nursery decor ideas: A moody, vintage, upcycled space

This nursery caught our eye this week courtesy of its moody vibe and interesting mix of old and new finds. The creation of stylist Penny Hyams (of The Studio Melbourne), who worked with children’s interior store Hello Little Birdie, gender neutrality and sustainability were key to the brief. “We specialise in incorporating vintage pieces in our shoots as we believe they add personality to a room, and stop them looking too generic,” says Penny.

Moody nursery
Sitting atop the wardrobe, that Castle & Things ‘Love’ print is perfection!

Arguably the hero of the room, the cot was a Gumtree find, purchased from someone who had had it in their family for over 100 years. Used by three generations of the one family, the cot presented an ideal upcycling opportunity for Penny who repainted it and purchased a new mattress to go with it. “It was white when we bought it but there were many chips and you could see the history through them. There were several layers of different coloured paint beneath,” says Penny.

Upcycled cot
The cot bedding and cushions were sourced from Castle & Things and H&M Home

The room’s upcycled wardrobe was purchased on eBay for just $10 before Penny painted it dark grey with a matte black interior – it was originally white. “It has lots of little drawers and racks for displaying treasures. We loved that we could layer things on top of it as well,” says Penny.

Amazingly, the room’s big-ticket items (the cot, wardrobe and old tin case), cost a total of just $160! “We mixed expensive bedding with very affordable items and think this could be an easy project to inspire others,” says Penny.

Upcycled wardrobe
This room could easily transition to an older child’s room simply by swapping out the cot for a bed

Old meets new aesthetic preferences aside, Penny and her team are passionate about sustainability and its principles underpin their whole ethos. “It’s hugely important to us! We have recently made our studio plastic-free and are working hard toward being carbon neutral in the not too distant future. There are so many vintage design gems out there waiting to be found and we now have quite a good collection of them.”

Win latest Rachel Castle bedding in gorgeous slate linen

The new printed and plain slate linen bedding from Castle was designed with the boys in mind but could equally be styled up for girls (little ones or grown-ups)!
 RC-MASTER-EDITED-22_7
Rachel Castle says: “We’re so excited about our new slate 100% linens, such a bedding staple. We wanted to make something that the boys would like too for once, as we are very much known for our love of a floral and a spot!
quilt_linen_charcoal_960x560
“So you can make a pretty bed with the floral and spot pillowcases and some soft pastel velvets, or a more masculine bed with the new linen stripes. Give it as much or as little colour as you like.”
pillowcase_linen_jumbospot_960x650
As a mother of a teenage boy, Rachel herself struggled with what to put on his bed. “The simplicity of a slate linen — all that texture and crinkly goodness, cause he’s never going to keep it neat — with a black velvet pillowcase and a simple blue stripe, was perfect,” she said. “The slate also happily takes you all through spring to summer, still warm but crisp.”

Win latest Rachel Castle grown up (but not TOO grown up) linen

Castle’s new 100% Belgian linen is dyed the softest ice grey you’ve ever seen, says Rachel Castle. “All wintery in winter but oh so summery in summer, I personally love sleeping in linen, and love the way it washes over time into that antique scrunchy ‘I’ve had it forever’ kind of look so I’m dead excited about this range. ”

We’re giving you the chance to win some (read how at the end of this post).

“Our quite serious and grown up bed (ooh, never let us grow up entirely!) still has a twinkle in its eye, the antique wash pillowcases to match come printed with rust clouds, charcoal scallops and our signature white spots,” Rachel adds.

“We’ve wanted to do linens for so long now. We needed to find the right supplier, the right linen, just the right mix of look and feel, and all for the right price (they’re excellent by the way), so we hope you love them too. A nod to classic with a big cheeky wink. Who said sophistication couldn’t be fun?”

The Tabletop Project day 2: Rachel Castle

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

0053_DSC5764

Today, we have artist and bed linen queen Rachel Castle, director of Castle and Things. She used the Tripod Dining Table.

0064_DSC5796

“We need Christmas prep to be quick and easy. We work right up until Christmas Eve, and some customers even drop by the office, and later at night by my house, to pick up orders. I’ve got to say the late last minuters are always the husbands, funny.

“I grab all the circles and offcuts I can from the office and on Christmas morning simply lay the table and then colour everything up with bits and bobs of paper and tinsel and streamers.

0087_DSC6721

“A little spot, funny, totally puts whimsy into anything. My family however, are probably a little over the spot situation. Tough luck peoples, it’s just how we rock ‘n roll! At least I buy them nice presents to make up for it.”

“There’s not a day when I don’t just want to make things.” An interview with Rachel Castle

You probably already know Rachel Castle’s sellout pokadot pillow cases, velvet round cushions and colourful artwork. If you’ve seen the saying Put The Love In The Coconut around the place, you’ve seen her happy creations for her label CASTLE.

Rachel Castle of CASTLE
Rachel Castle of CASTLE

I’m delighted to finally interview Rachel for Interiors Addict but it’s taken a while because her life, by her own admission, is a little hectic, like most creatives I’d say. Also, her work is so popular that she can’t make enough of it (“I get really cranky customers writing ‘BUT EVERYTHING’S SOLDDDD,’ which is great, but I often feel so bad I’m not making things quick enough!”).

Whether she’s inspired or frustrated though, there’s never a day when Rachel doesn’t want to just make things. “Inspiration is a funny old thing. It comes in the night time when it’s a complete shag to get out of bed and write it down, why is that?! I think the thing for me is to keep it real, to say what I want to say rather than what I think others might like/not like me to say. Having said that I keep the language well and truly nice, unlike in real life!”

Limited edition teatowels, designed to be framed, are an affordable $59

While her work is always vibrant and colourful, that isn’t a conscious decision. “I just know when something looks right to me. With inspiration I think there is an equal part frustration. I am just as frustrated as I am inspired at times, which I think keeps me busy and making things constantly. Sometimes it works, others it doesn’t. That’s just life and I think being aware of this keeps me moving.” Fashion also influences Rachel hugely and she turns to fashion magazines when her brain “feels dull”.
