The best places to buy Australian bed linen online

This always popular post has been updated for 2022.

L&M Home

Previously known as Linen & Moore, L&M Home was founded in 2000 and its bedding range has a focus on natural materials rich in texture and character. More of a forever purchase, the linen becomes softer with time and use, as does the soft hand-loomed cotton. And while the range features plenty of trend-based colours, it’s the classic stripes and textured pieces that are perfect for that chic, timeless aesthetic.

Castle & Things

We just love Rachel Castle’s fun but sophisticated linen range, mastering mix and match and making bright colour acceptably grown up. You’re probably familiar with her spotty sheets, velvet penny round cushions and limited edition screen printed tea towels, which get snapped up and framed as affordable art. Castle’s all about pops of colour and a bit of whimsy.

On the website you’ll also find beach towels, bags, sweatshirts, Rachel’s original artwork and prints and more. I have countless grey linen doona covers and my castle one is my fave. So much so I have now actually worn it out from years of washing and use!

Castle & Things

LinenMe

It’s the linen Jen currently has on her bed (a mix of rosa and mint ticking stripes, if you’re interested, and yes, pink and green should always be seen!). LinenMe only manufacture bed linen from 100% European stonewashed linen which is strong and supple, getting better with each use and wash. They say investing in a top quality European linen product is an investment in longevity. Their range of colours (especially for the stripe lovers!) is huge and as well as sheets. covers and pillowcases, they also sell table linen, throws, cushions, robes and much more!

I Love Linen

Launched in 2013, I Love Linen started as just bed linen and has expanded to include table linen, homewares, towels and more. When it comes to your bedroom textiles, you’ll find pure cotton and linen, organic bamboo, cushions, mattress toppers and more. Whether you’re after on-trend crumpled plain linen or crisp, white, hotel style sheets, it’s a great one-stop-shop! We love the mix of plains and patterns and layering extras like valances and pillowcases too – all great quality and at very reasonable prices.

The brand’s ‘3D Bundle Curator’ tool is a great feature of the site – you can build an entire bedroom look from the fitted sheet to the quilt cover and more. The tool gives you a visual which shows exactly how the selection will look on your bed.

I Love Linen

Kip&Co

Launched in Melbourne in 2012, Kip&Co was founded by sisters Kate Heppell and Hayley Pannekoecke and best buddy Alex McCabe. Their bold designs and trademark giant tassel throws have become cult bestsellers and they do a great limited edition collaboration too! Collection after collection, year after year, we love this brand more and more.

What started as a bright, colourful bedding brand, quickly expanded into a vibrant lifestyle brand, as the girls brought their fun and stylish aesthetic to products for every corner of the home, and every member of the family. Now with a global following, Kip&Co continues to be inspired by the girls’ simple passion for interiors that are full of joy, laughter and the colour of life.

Aura Home

Aura Home is now a very established brand, sold online as well as in the likes of Myer. Founded in 2000 by Tracie Ellis, and inspired by years of global meandering, they design everything in Melbourne, and while we seen many trends come and go, they believe it’s their forward-looking approach that sets them apart. They’ve evolved from muted, earthy tones to extravagant colour, and then to subtle pastels. We think they have just the right amount of pattern and texture these days!

They’ve expanded to sell things such as rugs, ceramics, towels and more, and now have a beautiful concept store in Malvern too. I’m a fan of their ticking stripes and tie-closure Maison quilt covers.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is aura-maya_bedlinen_midnight-640x853.jpg

Cultiver

Another great small Aussie linen brand for high quality, classic, muted linen. They believe in products that last, great customer service and only use European flax linen. Founder Nicolle Sullivan believes using beautiful things in our everyday life can make us feel happier. Agreed! They also sell table linen, throws, cushions, robes and more. Shipping is free on every order and the brand offers free returns too.

Cultiver

In the Sac

Just another plain linen brand? Maybe! But In the Sac gets top marks for branding, packaging and colour choices! Great quality, great colours (and lovely stripes) and free shipping worldwide.

Sheridan

Of course, no Australian linen roundup is complete without Sheridan! People will tell you how the sheets they received as a wedding gift are still going strong, decades on! And I find their sheets just feel amazing too! Cotton, silk, linen, plain, patterned, modern, classic, colourful, from 250 to 1200 threadcount and everything in between, they have it all! Founded in 1967, Sheridan is a household name synonymous with quality (you’ll find them in Qantas first class, no less). In recent years they’ve done some great collaborations too. I find it’s a great place to buy bed covers (or coverlets) which can be tricky to find in Australia.

Sheridan

Sage x Clare

“We’re proud to design prints that unexpectedly and expertly clash with one another,” says Sage x Clare’s designer Phoebe Bell. From Moroccan stars to statement animal prints, hand drawn florals, handmade embroidery and 1970’s inspired colours and textures, this brand is one for the maximalists. Expert at the mix and match, we love how the brand’s sheet sets, quilt covers and cushions create a playful Bohemian vibe in the bedroom.

Sage and Clare

Ezibuy

Not the first place you’d expect to find fabulous bed linen but we like to think of it as a hidden gem. From florals to checks, plain and abstract designs, the line-up is strong but the prices are reasonable. For example, the 100% linen duvet cover below is priced at $200 which is a steal in our books! With waffle blankets, down duvet covers, pillows and more available, it really is a one-stop bedding shop.

Greenhouse Interiors

Featuring collaborations with contemporary Australian artists, the Greenhouse Interiors bedding range comes in limited edition, highly covetable, prints. The art embellished range is designed to be mixed and matched with all of the pieces available to purchase separately. The range’s 100 per cent cotton art emblazoned bed covers are always a sell-out.

Greenhouse Interiors

Sheet Society

Another clever purveyor of mix and match bed linen, Melbourne’s Sheet Society don’t believe in being forced to buy bed sheets in sets; all of its items are available for individual sale making the brand a great choice for a bespoke look. Specialising in bed sheets that are trend-driven in terms of colours, designs and fabrics, the brand’s core products are made from luxurious long-stable Eden Cotton and French flax Eve linen but there’s boucle, corduroy and waffle options too. Invisible zips, extra wide elastic, a deep pillow fold and a folded top edge are all standard features.

The Sheet Society

The Cover Collective

This VIC-based brand do luxury linen “without the la di da” and pride themselves on keeping it real! “We are not your typical linen brand and we don’t get all fancy pants on our customers, we just want to give them the best night’s sleep, night after night,” says founder Nikki Cap. They specialise in only 100% premium pure French linen. “Quite simply, it’s damn good!”

Society of Wanderers

This gorgeous bedding brand has a distinct retro vibe. There’s leopard print, gingham, floral patterns and more, all created in 100 per cent French flax linen. The brand also produces gorgeous napery and cushions as well as a lovely line-up of matching apparel.

How to pick the best duvet: your quilt questions answered

I recently decided it was time to invest in a quality quilt; a really warm, heavy-feeling, hotel-like one that would look all plump on the bed. I don’t ask much, do I?! But I didn’t know where to start. And while I thought I probably wanted a feather duvet (that’s what we call them in the UK and the term doona used in Australia is actually trademarked by Tontine, don’t you know?), I wasn’t sure if they were cruelty-free.

A winter weight wool quilt

I thought if I had all these questions, you might have too! So I asked the folks at Onkaparinga, one of Australia’s oldest textile brands, to give us the lowdown on loft, fill options and certifications. Not sure what I’m talking about? Read on…

What are the main quilt fill options and which is best for which reason/season?

The main fills available are:

  • Down and feather – this can be great all year round depending on the percentage of down vs feather. For example, 85% down and 15% feather will be very warm and more suited to winter sleeping whereas 50% down 50% feather would be suited to all seasons or warmer sleepers all year.

Down is the super soft and warm under-feather material sourced from ducks or geese. When the quilt is referred to as ‘down and feather’ it has a higher down count (more expensive and warmer), when mentioned as ‘feather and down’ it has a higher feather count (a cheaper alternative suited to all seasons/less warm).

  • Wool – this can be sourced from all over the world, although Australian wool is seen as the premium wool worldwide (we only use this). Wool is naturally temperature regulating and breathable, allowing for the materials to lock in warmth while allowing your skin to breathe. Higher wool GSM means a warmer quilt, for example 450-500gsm is perfect for winter or colder sleepers, 300gsm is suited to all seasons or warmer sleepers. Due to the temperature regulating properties both are suited to all year depending on the sleeper. Look for washable wool for a longer lasting quilt.
  • Cotton – for the warmer sleeper or those hot balmy nights, it feels light on and doesn’t have much bulk to it. It’s a very thin looking quilt that will not give that plump look. Those that like a good looking bed too may want to add another quilt for decorative purposes but sleep just under the cotton quilt!
  • Polyester is a cheaper alternative for quilts and is often found in quilts for commercial purposes or budget friendly quilts. Polyester quilts may give a plump look depending on the type and can be favoured by allergy sufferers as they can be washed frequently at higher temperatures. They are less breathable due to the synthetic fibres so are not recommended for hot sleepers. Being polyester, they are not made from natural fibres which can put some people off due to environmental factors and synthetics being close to skin for long lengths of time.
A washable wool quilt is a good option for allergy sufferers

Is there one quilt that will work all year round or is it essential to have a summer and winter weight option?

Many quilts are suitable all year round depending on your sleep type. If you are an extremely cold person you may need to invest in a good winter quilt as well as hot sleepers, a summer weight (cotton) quilt. For those sleeping with heating and cooling in homes or average temperature sleepers, a good quality quilt made from natural fibres will be suitable for all year round.

Looking after your quilt, airing it regularly and shaking to help with loft, will keep your quilt fresh and looking great all year.

A quality doona is a few hundred dollars. Why is it worth it?

Investing in a good quality quilt will give you a quilt that will last for years if well looked after. A premium quilt will generally be made with higher quality and more natural fibres that are proven to give a great night’s sleep and last longer.

Are there any considerations for people with allergies or asthma?

We find that natural fibres generally give less chance of allergies or asthma with wool being one recommended for allergy sufferers. With no chemical substances to irritate, wool is generally suited to allergy sufferers. It is important to regularly air your quilts and clean them according to instructions to keep dust (and allergens) to a minimum.

Can you explain some of the jargon please?!

  • Loft is the height of the quilt – so when the quilt naturally falls on the bed, how pillowy/high it looks and feels.
  • Baffle Box or Box Construction is the term used to describe how the quilt is built.  The ‘box’ is like a pocket that is filled with the fill material and closed off so that your quilt is made from ‘boxes’ holding the fill in place, preventing too much movement of the fill that can result in uneven warmth.

Are there any certifications we should look out for? Many people worry down-filled quilts involve cruelty to birds?

Oeko-Tex is important to check when considering allergies and an aversion to any harmful substances as it means the manufacturer and product has been checked and the product is free from any nasties!

If you are looking for a down and feather quilt we do believe it is important to ensure they are RDS (The Responsible Down Standard) certified. RDS certification ensures the materials were sourced from suppliers that have treated the geese and ducks involved well. They are able to express innate behaviors and live pain and distress free. To become RDS certified the entire process from farm to manufacturer has been certified by auditors and inspectors from a third-party certifier. Any RDS certified down and feathers are clearly marked during the manufacturing process to ensure no non-certified products are mistakenly used.

Ensure your down and feather quilt is cruelty free by checking for RDS certification

What’s the most popular quilt you sell?

Our most popular is our Australian Washable Wool, Winter Weight Quilt. Filled with washable Australian wool this quilt is perfect for cooler nights.

I’ll let you know how I get on with choosing mine!

Top 9 picks from the new Linen House summer collection

With the days finally getting warmer (although still as wet as ever down here in Melbourne), it’s time to bring in some brighter tones and botanical prints to the bedroom.

Linen House’s Spring/Summer 2017 ‘Bring the outdoors in’ collection does just that – matching the current trend for indoor plants with a beautiful selection of soft textures, fresh colours and pretty (non-nanna) florals.

To top it all off, they’ve also expanded their range into homewares, including planters, vases, hanging wall art and even crockery. So, without further ado, here are my top picks from the new goodies.

Amiera Quilt Cover & Pillowcase Set

I am an absolute sucker for all things Mediterranean, and this quilted tile pattern with its fabulous bursts of colour hits all the right notes. Like a sunny holiday on the coast of Spain, this is all sorts of wonderful – I want to jump into bed right now and never leave. (From $229.95)

Olympia Quilt Cover & Pillowcase Set

Soft, luxurious, black and white. This screams tribal and oozes Boho with its cotton waffle and tassel trim – an instant addition to my lust list. (From $149.95)

Squiggly Gym Quilt Cover & Pillowcase Set

A shady gum tree with pale pink blossoms highlights the beauty of the Australian bush – just add some eucalyptus oil to your bedside table to complete the look and feel. (From $169.95)

Patti Wall Hanger

An expansion into homewares done well, these hand-made natural rope macramés have delicate long tassels and are oh-so-perfect for adding to your bedroom. ($99.95).

Nimes Linen

Linen; timeless, natural, rustic. Stone washed and soft to touch, these tablecloths, napkins and table runners come in soft shades of blue, rose pink and other neutrals and will suit both casual and formal dining. (From $12.95)

Sela Mug

These artisan-inspired reactive glazed mugs come in blue and pink and will add that earthy uniqueness to your kitchen wares. ($19.95)

Hema Vase

Gold is definitely not old and still very much on trend – add a hint of class and luxe with these glittery vases. (From $19.95)

Kara Planter

This range of textural planters have a raw look about them, and their white on grey patterns will suit anything from industrial to Boho – I already have one gracing my dining table! (From $14.95)

Hippity Hop Quilt Cover

The kids don’t get left out either with this super cute quilt cover. Featuring the softest silver greys and crisp white, this unbelievably adorable design is perfect for boys and girls – all I need now is a kid of my own! (From $69.95)

Whether you’re after Scandi, boho, luxe or a modern twist on the traditional, Linen House has you covered – literally. Head over to their brand new Chapel Street store in Melbourne to see more (or shop online). The new collection will be introduced over the next month.

Where to buy Australian bed linen online: 2017 update

Way back in 2014, when Tony Abbott was PM, Ellen DeGeneres took that epic celeb-filled selfie and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin ‘consciously uncoupled,’ Interiors Addict had a milestone of its own… we produced one of our most clicked on articles ever: The 10 best places to buy Australian bed linen online.

Now, three years on, we thought it was about time we revamped the list. So here’s our favourites for 2017…

Jardan: You most likely associate Jardan with super stylish Australian furniture, but their bedding offering is of equal wow-factor. Coming in both brushed cotton and 100% linen, the divine stonewashed colours are available in solid and striped iterations.

Jardan

Kesem Boy: A newcomer to the scene, it’s the Sydney label’s fun but subtle patterns that caught our attention… perfect for those neutral lovers who are becoming that little bit daring! Made from 100% cotton sateen, they offer throws and cushions to finish the look.

Kesem Boy

L&M Home: Always reliable, L&M Home (formerly Linen and Moore) have all the latest trends covered for your bedroom, lounge and dining table. We always look forward to their new catalogue! With a design team based in Melbourne, their philosophy is around creating everyday luxury for your home.

L&M Home

Kas: Firstly, the brand is one for colour lovers, their bedding is bold, graphic and vibrant. Secondly, it’s one for the bargain hunters! Hurry, there’s an epic sale currently on.

Kas

Hunting for George: In my opinion a brand that can do no wrong! With bedding made from linen and cotton sateen and stylish accessories – like woollen blankets and throws – you can get your whole bedroom look with a click of the mouse.

Hunting for George

The Pillowslip Store: As the name suggests, these new kids on the block specialise in extra large pillowslips, which look as good on a queen bed as they will on your king. No more too-short pillows (they sell the inners too) and the designs are just fab. They come in plain colours too. We love the gingham but there’s something for everyone and it encourages low-commitment, affordable mixing and matching without changing your entire bed linen!

The Pillowslip Store

R & R Bedding: offers a considered edit of 100% French linen pillowcases and duvet covers of the very best quality and cutting edge design. Designed in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, R & R are bringing back the traditional craft of embroidery in an untraditional way: all linen pillowcases are designed to be embroidered with whatever you please (initials, sayings, your favourite Kanye lyrics), for a good night’s sleep with a side of humour. R & R makes the perfect gift for weddings, engagements, the person who has everything or as a well deserved gift to yourself.

R&R Bedding

The Jersey Company: A little bit different, the bedding is made from soft and stretchy t-shirt material, otherwise referred to as T-SHEET™. Think snuggling up at night in your favourite oversized tee! With no strict sheet sets, it’s all about mixing and matching with a range of beautiful neutrals.

The Jersey Company

Shannon Fricke: Brimming with exotic patterns, colour and a distinct boho vibe, the brand is the brainchild of stylist Shannon Fricke. A personal favourite of mine, the cotton is super soft and most designs feature that little bit something, from tassels to velvet accents.

Shannon Fricke

Goosebumps: It’s no surprise Goosebumps got their start in kids bedding with their adult’s range being playful, colourful and best of all reversible. They also have a sale on, so jump online quick smart!

Goosebumps

Sanctuary Boutique Linens: Collaborating with local and international artists, the family-owned brand brings art and design into your home. With refined yet eclectic patterns, look carefully and you’ll spot skulls paired with roses and toucans matched with tigers!

Sanctuary Boutique Linens

Linen House: With an impressive number of different styles and trends, the family-owned business offers everything from tribal textures to velvets and knits detailed with pom-poms and tassels. It’s a brand that’s sure to bring every bedroom idea to life. And between you and me, the quilt cover below has to be one of my all time favourites!

Linen House

Miss Bettina: A modern take on classic floral bed linen, the boutique label features bold hand-drawn prints on reversible quit covers. Made from 100% cotton sateen, they are perfect for those prone to allergies and best of all they’re on sale!

Miss Bettina

We are still huge fans of all the bedding brands mentioned in our original post, so don’t forget to check them out here.

We hope you found this list useful. Please let us know who you’d add!

The colourful, textural and pattern-happy homewares of Squeak

Working as a textile designer Pippa Oostergetel desperately wanted to design her own products. So two and a half years ago she did just that, launching her fashion accessories and homewares label Squeak, and producing the exact designs and products she had always wanted to find in store.

Pippa
Pippa

Starting with just a small range of silk scarfs things quickly grew, with Pippa adding cashmere scarves, handbags, clutches, dressing gowns, tea towels and our favourites, her cushions and quilts. All playing with colour, texture and most importantly print, the designs are digitally printed onto natural fibres, making the products just as lovely to touch as they are to look at.

Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak2

Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak1

Her recently launched Spring Summer ’16 collection is no exception, with the designs continuing to play with beautiful patterns, but this time, with more sophistication. “I’ve learned so much during the first couple of years of running my own business and I feel as Squeak’s grown, so have my designs, and this collection is certainly more adult… I feel so grown up! With this collection I certainly explore a bit deeper with the product design, not making everything just about the textile patterns. My bags have a lot more bells and whistles and my cushions have added luxuries such as velvet backings and genuine leather piping.”

Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak

However, her favourite product is her colourful, hand stitched quilts, which have beautiful velvet reverses, making them amazing to curl up in. “The quilts for me are a sign of the quality and style I have always wanted for Squeak. So often you spend so long looking at your designs that in the end you no longer like them anymore, you’re sick of them. But my quilts are an example of one of the few times you look at your products and say: ‘nailed it!’ They’re what I’ve always wanted and I wouldn’t change anything about them.”

Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak3

1Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak

Designing everything herself, the textile patterns are always at the forefront of Pippa’s mind. Often using her own photographs when it comes to producing her prints, you can’t always see them, but they are likely the base of the design. “Nine times out of 10 there will be a photograph in the design somewhere. It may not be obvious, but sometimes they’re just there to add texture. So I often start designing just by playing with my images.”

1Pippa_Oostergetel_Squeak

With her collection now available, Pippa is already one step ahead, with next year’s offering well in the works. “I’ve got another range of cushion covers and quilts coming out early next year. I also of course have more bags. In this next range I’m really playing with metallics a bit more. After that, well, you’ll have to wait and see.”

How to style the perfectly relaxed but luxurious bed!

Sponsored by Sheridan

It’s the stylist’s secret everyone wants to know: how to make your bed look that perfect blend of luxuriously comfortable but not too ‘done’. Well, lucky for you, we have the answers for you today. Check out this great video tutorial from linen giants Sheridan and you’ll soon be making your relaxed-looking bed like a pro!

Do you sleep in linen? I have plenty of it in my own (extensive!) bedding collection and I love the texture of its slight crumple. I just love that relaxed look. The bed in the video has been made with Sheridan’s Abbotson range, which features linen flat and fitted sheets, quilt covers, bed covers and pillowcases. It was launched in 2011 and has fast become a bestseller.

Abbotson Snow Quilt Cover_SHR

There’s a range of colours so it’s up to you if you want to go more matchy-matchy or mix things up with some contrast; perhaps a dark sheet and pillowcases under a crisp white quilt. The barely blue Breeze is a fresh new colourway for this year.

Screen Shot 2015-09-07 at 12.14.42 pm

While linen is known for looking more casual, there’s something so luxurious about those natural fibres. And this being Sheridan, you’re getting some pretty top notch textile! After researching linens from all over the world for a number of years, they developed their own with fibres sourced from Belgium. The thickness of the yarn was considered and countless fibres tested to arrive at the final product years later.

To the unconverted, linen has a reputation for feeling a little bit scratchy, so they made sure theirs was the softest. What I love about linen is how it gets better and softer with every wash, which is why I invested in mine last year!

How do YOU make YOUR bed? Do you love this look? Will you be trying it for yourself at home?

Online shopping fix: Skinny Wolf

Having always wanted to own her own shop, Leila Sanderson’s life long dream eventuated, when in 2014 she launched Skinny Wolf.

landing-page-quilt-rosette-cushion-pillow-case-teepee-skinnywolf-0 copy

Featuring a collection of wares predominately designed and made herself, her products include teepees, quilts, cushions and rosettes. With a whimsical style, everything is colourful, natural, hand-made and one-off. “My wares are all inspired by what I liked to do as a kid,” explains Leila. “Playing house, dressing up, drawing, picking flowers, playing in the mud and reading fairy tales. And well, I guess I never really grew up because they’re all the things I still love to do!”

quilt-collection-front-view-120x150-skinnywolf-softie1-skinnywolf-softie2-skinnywolf-50

Inspired by her work for furniture maker Greg Hatton and his partner, florist Katie Marx, Leila not only learnt a lot of valuable skills from them both, but also got her store name. “Skinny Wolf is the combination of two of my nicknames. When I first started working for Greg he was known as Twiggy by some of his mates, so he nicknamed me Skinny (for obvious reasons!). But sorry, I can’t tell you why I’m also sometimes known as the Wolf!”

Jen loves: debut bedding collection by Hunting for George

Another week, another gorgeous collection of Australia linen, this time from the sisters at Hunting for George in Melbourne.

hunting for george navy 2

At Hunting For George, they believe sleep is your chance to switch off, recharge, dream of unicorns and snore like a sailor! As passionate ambassadors for a good night’s sleep it was only fitting that Lucy Glade-Wright and Jo Harris create their own bed linen range to add to their fast growing stable of homewares products.

hunting for george yellow
The unisex collection is interchangeable so you can mix and match easily throughout the range and consists of four quilts (Pinata Party, Hamptons, Islander and Mr & Mrs Smith) and three sheet sets and matching pillowcases (Smoke, Pinata Party and White Islander). I’m a big fan of gorgeous looking sheets, even though it may only be you who sees them!

Is kantha the next big thing in bed linen?

I’ve seen kantha popping up a few places lately. Could it be the new patchwork or ikat for beds? Laura Hanks-Ruttyn thinks so.
