How to: Select the right decking timber

Spring renovation season has arrived and many homeowners are turning their attention to revitalising outdoor areas ahead of summer entertaining. Installing a timber deck can add an attracting and practical backdrop for days spent alfresco.

boral-timber_decking-tips

With a number of decking options to choose from, Leon Travis, national sales and distribution manager at Boral Timber, offers some tips for choosing decking timbers.

Selecting decking timber

Choosing decking timber largely comes down to personal preference. Australian hardwood species, such as Blackbutt, Spotted Gum or River Reds are a durable option for outdoor spaces and offer high density, toughness, colour spect rum and natural beauty. A species’ Janka rating is used to identify its hardness – the higher the rating, the greater the hardness. It is important to consider a timber species durability rating for outdoor applications.

Timber is rated for in-ground durability and above-ground durability, from Class 1 (the most durable) to Class 4 (the least durable). This provides guidelines as to which species to choose for the area where decking will be installed. For example, a fully exposed area with high moisture (such as in a wet or tropical climate) may require a Class 1 (above ground) timber such as Ironbark, Tallowwood, Spotted Gum or Blackbutt.

Blackbutt and Spotted Gum species have fire resisting properties, making them suitable for homes in bushfire prone areas. Commercial decking products are ideal for those who want to achieve a more industrial look. Boral’s range of commercial 135 x 32mm decking boards boast a greater load capacity than standard decking, offering a strong and durable option for outdoor living and entertaining spaces. The boards can be fixed with large stainless steel bugle screws, which complement the size and strength of the decking and are consistent with the look and feel of a contemporary commercial space.

Building a deck

When it comes to building a deck, it’s best to leave it to a professional. Consulting a licensed builder, architect or engineer can help to ensure all building codes and Australian Standards are adhered to. In addition, depending on the scope of the deck, detailed plans and building approvals may be required.

Those constructing a deck in bush-fire prone areas should consult Australian Standard AS3959: Construction of Buildings in Bush Fire Prone Areas. Local councils will be able to assist with information on the relevant regulations.

Maintaining a timber deck

Homeowners can help to preserve the colour and improve the life of a deck by regularly cleaning and maintaining it. If applying specialised cleaning products, loose dirt or garden residue should be swept away before. By simply sanding and coating exposed surfaces with a decking finish, homeowners can help to restore the existing deck to its original appearance.

How to: Rejuvenate your timber deck for summer

As the sun comes out and the temperature rises, it’s time to refresh timber decking. While regular sweeping and cleaning is valuable, a deck re-coat is recommended every 12-to-18 months to maintain the quality, durability and appearance of the timber.

Timber coating specialist Sikkens offer the following tips to achieve professional looking results:

Oil vs. water-based coatings
Quality coatings save time and money in the long run, whether it’s oil or water-based, each finish has its own benefits. Oil-based coatings penetrate the wood better and are more durable however take longer to dry. An advantage of using an oil-based coating is its transparency, allowing for the natural characteristics of the timber to show through.

A water-based coating is environmentally friendly and doesn’t produce as much odour during application or drying. Advantages to using water -based coatings are faster drying time and easy clean up. With re-coating possible within two hours, the Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro is perfect for a weekend project. Available in five ready mixed colours, its high quality, transparent finish accentuates the natural character and colour of the timber.

Do not mix water-based and oil-based coatings

It is recommended to stick with the most recently used coating type – whether oil or water-based. Those looking to change between coating systems will need to completely strip the existing coating back to bare timber prior to re-coating which will ensure optimum adhesion

Importance of cleaning the deck

Ensure the timber is clean and free from dirt and grime to allow the new coating to properly penetrate and adhere to the timber for long lasting protection. For hardwood decks that are weathered or grey, a cleaning product such as Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner needs to be applied before re-coating. This fast acting gel formula will brighten and revitalise grey and weathered timber, in preparation for application of the re-coat.
Sikkens products are available at all major hardware and independent paint stores.

Dispelling the myths – the affordability of custom furniture

With increased concern for the environment, many consumers are looking to more sustainable options when it comes to furniture and, while custom furniture has long been associated with a hefty price tag, there is a new generation of Australian designers and makers who are challenging that perception.

11149307_954433037920776_3443101547916292027_n

Ingrain Designs

“Custom made is more affordable in the long run and people are cottoning on to the longevity you get out of a custom piece,” says Ben Purchase of Melbourne’s Ingrain Designs, who highlights the environmental impact of buying mass-produced, ‘fast furniture.’ “We’ve seen a rise of handmade and a growing concern for the environment. We’re more conscious now of where our furniture is coming from: how it was made, what it’s made out of and who made it,” says Ben.

Ingrain Designs’ floating bathroom vanity

“Instead of buying several pieces of furniture over a period of time, you can have that one custom piece in your home, completely customised to your style and specifications, that is built to last and will stand the test of time,” says Ben, who designs and creates a range of custom made furniture from his Collingwood showroom including dining tables, coffee tables, TV units, floating bathroom vanities, bar stools and mirrored timber storage units.

Ingrain Designs

And aside from environmental considerations, there is something beautiful in the bespoke. “I think people are also moving towards custom made to create statement, keepsake pieces that can be shared with generations to come. Dining tables, for example, are one of the largest pieces of furniture in the home and bring together family and friends to be entertained at, feast around and create memories together. And there’s a story and talking point that comes with that table too – from where the timber was sourced to the natural grain within the timber itself.” Ben regularly uses recycled timber to create his designs. “In Australia, we’re lucky to have access to an incredible variety of local and recycled timbers and wholesalers, such as Whelan Warehouse and Urban Salvage. Their range means we can find a timber variety to suit a variety of budgets.”

“Everything we make is custom made. So people can walk in and completely adapt a design based on their dimensions, desired timber type (lighter or darker toned boards) and configurations (e.g. how many drawers, doors), or we can work with customers to design something completely different. And we love the creativity and flexibility that gives us,” says Ben.

Ben’s top tips for commissioning furniture:

  1. The biggest tip is having an idea, even the smallest idea, of the style you want. This really helps a maker with the quoting and design process.
  1. Always have your dimensions worked out. Whether that is the size of the room or the space you have to work with.
  1. Research makers and what their strengths are. This will make sure they’re a good fit for the style and look you’re after.
  1. Give yourself enough time. Be mindful that our lead time allows for sourcing and ordering timber, hand making each and every piece, and delivery.
  1. Ask questions. You’ll be surprised at the variety of things we can create for your home, office or business. If it’s made from recycled timber, we’ve either made it or can make it.

Affordable, raw-look timber furniture at The Wood Room

The Wood Room produce handcrafted, custom timber furniture in minimalist shapes and natural finishes that feature inside popular Sydney hospitality spots such as all of the Boathouse venues (Balmoral, Palm Beach and Shelly Beach) and the revamped Newport Arms too. Their seaside, Scandinavian aesthetic is a perfect fit for those venues and it’s proving a popular with the public too.

But while the brand’s clean-lined aesthetic has wide appeal, it’s their ‘untreated’ timber finish that has tongues wagging. “There is something very beautiful about raw timber – each variety has its own unique colour tone,” says The Wood Room co-owner Simon Plowman who explains that as soon as you ‘finish’ timber with oil, wax, varnish or lacquer for protection, it automatically changes the colour of the wood. “The colour can go from a blonde pale tone to dark orange in an instant so we decided to work out how we could protect the timber whilst still maintaining its colour.”

WoodRoom_BOX table-0098

After many months of experimentation and testing different formulas, Simon and co-owner Kate Nicholson, came up with a solution that is proving a hit with consumers. “We’ve now perfected the formula and have a finish that still protects the timber, without changing the natural colour of the wood. This finish is by far our most popular with our clients,” he says.

The Wood Room, aside from producing Australian-made furniture, uses a range of Australian timbers – Blackbutt, Tallowwood, Spotted Gum, Victoria Ash and Tasmanian Oak – as well as white and red American Oak, sourced directly from the US.

“We are continually inspired by simplicity and minimalism in design. We love embracing the natural beauty of timber and using the fewest and barest essentials to maximum effect. The clean and simple shapes, in which timber can be constructed into, form our furniture. The ‘less is more theory’ has always applied in our designs. However, at the end of the day, we simply design furniture that we love, in the hope that others will love it too,” says Simon.

And with Australian hardwood, hand crafted coffee tables starting from $1,200, their pieces should have a broad reach too. “One of our aims when starting up The Wood Room was to ensure our furniture was affordably priced. It was important to us that our furniture was not out of reach for people. Being affordable also means that hopefully more people can purchase their own piece of custom made furniture,” says Simon who explains the variety of available timbers helps keep costs down. “There is a timber variety to suit every budget,” says Simon.

What to consider when choosing flooring for your reno

From tiles, hardwood, vinyl, laminate or eco-friendly choices like cork or bamboo, flooring options are endless and confusing. New flooring can drastically change the vibe and look of your space, for the better or worse. So it’s important to take into account both the aesthetic and functional factors before making a decision.

RA what to consider when choosing flooring for your home tiles

Image: Pinterest

Location
Which room or space will you change – the bathroom, living area, kitchen, or bedroom flooring? You need to think about how you use that floor and which material would be the most appropriate. For example, it wouldn’t be the best idea to carpet your entire bathroom.

Your lifestyle and needs
Durability, price and style are all factors that will influence your selection no matter if you have kids or pets, or just want to change the flooring for yourself.

You also need to think about practicality. Is the floor in a busy area of your home and who uses it the most? For instance, if you want to change the flooring in your five-year-old daughter’s room, you’re going to want something that she is unlikely to get hurt on, that is comfortable and easy to take care of and keep clean.
RA what to consider when choosing flooring for your home timber

Image: Pinterest

Type and style of flooring
There are numerous types of flooring to choose from. They have to accommodate both your desired look and style but also be practical. Consider whether they will be easy to clean and maintain, won’t be too dangerous to walk and will complement your furniture.

You can choose from a range of woven and non-woven carpets including twist, textured, loop and plush. Hard flooring comes in an assortment of wood including timber, bamboo, laminate – 1 strip, 2 strip, 3 strip and multi-strip. Tiles are always a safe choice with polished, matte, Lappato, gloss or external. Lastly, vinyl can come in multiple forms from plank to tile to sheet.

RA what to consider when choosing flooring for your home concrete

Image: Pinterest

Select your colours
The colour tone you choose for your flooring can make or break the aesthetic of an entire room. Consider the following.

  • What colours are part of your current decor?
  • What colour scheme would you like to incorporate in your new space?
  • What is the main attraction of your space?
  • What vibe do you want to create in your space?

Space is also a factor when determining colours. Light floors make a room more spacious and can brighten up darker areas, while medium tones can add warmth to an otherwise dull space.

Natural tones are easy to match with furniture and fittings, as they blend well with a range of materials and colours and won’t take away from the general aesthetic of the room.

Size and shape
It’s important to choose the size and shape of the material. In terms of hardwood, do you like skinny or wide panels? Small square tiles or rectangular ones?

RA what to consider when choosing flooring for your home vintage tiles

Image: Pinterest

How much do you want to invest on your flooring purchase?
Pricing for flooring is displayed and quoted in square metres. It’s necessary for you to measure your desired flooring space and determine the number of square metres that’ll be required for your home and then decide on the amount you would like to spend on each square.

You also need to be aware pricing often doesn’t include installation costs and you might incur further charges.

Get samples
Once you are happy with your colour and material selection you should order or borrow samples and test them out in your home at different times of the day to see how the lighting looks against your other furniture. It will also allow you to feel the texture and durability of the flooring. This test will help you to make a better choice and you hopefully won’t regret your decision later.

The wall-hung shelving you never knew you needed. Until now!

After growing up with a dad who made her furniture and later living in New York, where the shopping is (let’s be honest) a lot better than in Australia, Rebecca Tyndall finally came to start her own wall-hung furniture business after having her first child.

IMG_0171

“The first item I designed was the Baby Bunting, which is still one of Willow and Wood’s most popular pieces. It’s a really beautiful piece of furniture for a nursery and there just wasn’t anything available to buy here in Australia that was similar. I spent nearly three years living in New York when I was younger and of course they have everything you could possibly want over there. I had serious shopping envy so I thought I would just make it myself.”

IMG_0273

That’s when she called on her dad, Russell, a builder, and now co-director of the business. He makes all the prototypes by hand in Sydney and most pieces are then manufactured overseas. “After I had designed a few pieces, everyone seemed to love them so much that in a moment of extreme confidence (because who would just start an online furniture company with no experience?) my Dad and I started Willow and Wood. Not that it happened overnight; in fact, it took about nine months to tweak the designs and get the company and website up and running. We launched with just six products.”

IMG_0310

The Bookworm Bookrack is the most popular product by far. “I designed it because we live in a small house but with heaps of wall space because the ceilings are so high. My boys just devour books and even with bookshelves everywhere we needed something more practical that would show off the artwork on the book covers. The artwork on kid’s books is so amazing and why wouldn’t you want to display them all the time? It attracts little ones to the books and because they are easy to access, more books are read. And you can never have too much storage.” Amen to that!

IMG_0180

IMG_0172

Rebecca says she is her own customer which is great because she knows her well! “Pretty much everything that we design has been in my house at one time or another. It’s because I design what I need and that’s what we sell. Women are the biggest deciders on decor in the home but they don’t just want things to look good. We want things that are also practical and that make our lives easier. And in my world, storage is king.”

IMG_0176

Rebecca and Russell recently decided to open a bricks and mortar store in Sydney’s Willoughby, so customers could see the products for themselves. And Rebecca believes what they offer is really unique.

“Most furniture stores have some items of shelving but we are unique in that most of what we sell is wall mounted. We do this to create more floor space in a home. We also like to decorate walls with our products. The Cloud Shelf and the Alps Shelf are cute pieces to decorate kid’s rooms with. You’re killing two birds with one shelf, so to speak.”

IMG_0188

They have just branched out into hallway storage with their Cloak Room Series, which is a take on the traditional American mud room and they’ll soon be adding the increasingly popular barn doors to their product line.

“Willow and Wood wouldn’t exist without my dad, Russell. Most weeks, he gets handed a design that has been scribbled on a scrap of paper by me and magically, it appears in the shop a few days later.”

Spend on hard flooring and get a free rug to zone your space

Sponsored by Choices Flooring

I’m a huge fan of hard flooring, especially with a youngster who drops food and makes all manner of mess, and the combination of hard floor with a beautiful rug is the ideal in my book! Hard flooring is durable, easy to clean, hygienic and looks great, then you simply add a rug for an extra layer (literally) of decor, texture, colour, pattern (or all of the above) with the added bonus of being able to create zones in open plan areas, and something soft under foot when you get out of bed or to sit on in the living room.

Plantino Laminate in Saw Marked Oak

While using the same type of flooring in your entire home is a sure fire way to make it look bigger and feel more cohesive (ripping up the daggy carpet and replacing it with laminate flooring throughout was the first thing we did when we purchased our new home recently), it’s still important to zone your different areas for different uses, especially if your home is open plan, as is increasingly the trend. Zoning defines a space and stops furniture look like it is ‘floating’. It’s an age old interiors trick that always works! A rug is key to pulling together your furniture and homewares in any room.

1950s Sydney apartment transformed into Scandinavian-inspired retreat

Renovated in time for the arrival of a baby, almost every aspect of this 1950s Sydney apartment was overhauled over a 12-week period, with a budget of $120k, and the result is Scandi-chic.

“The apartment was in its original 1950s state, obviously needing a complete overhaul, but we saw the potential because of the natural light streaming through the northerly facing windows and the beautiful green outlook. We love period buildings and the opportunity to completely overhaul the interior was just too much to resist,” says owner Sian Jenkins.

3A After kitchen

AFTER kitchen

Aside from the aesthetic revamp, the most transformative aspect of this renovation was structural. “We removed a section of a structural wall that closed off the kitchen from the living and dining area. This really opened up the whole space and meant we could also fit an island bench for extra storage, benchtop space and casual seating,” says interior designer and project manager Luisa Volpato, who cleverly chose a mirrored kitchen splash back to open up the space even further. “This reflects space and light from the large north-facing kitchen window. So even if you’re standing at the stove, you can still see what’s going on around you which is perfect if you have young kids. You can also chat with someone sitting at the island bench behind you,” says Luisa.

“The old carpet and lino was replaced with Blackbutt timber floorboards and all the walls were painted in Dulux Natural White. This provides a modern yet timeless blank canvas for Sian’s colourful artwork, quirky homewares and vintage furniture pieces,” says Luisa. She selected neutral wool carpet for the bedrooms, modern frosted glass doors in the main bedroom and mirrored sliding doors in the second bedroom. “You can’t go past mirrored sliding doors to help small rooms look bigger.”

Massive fans of pink, we were rather taken with the original bathroom – the sorbet-toned mosaic floor tiles in particular – but it obviously had to be overhauled for design consistency alone! “Besides the original 50s pink tiles and matching pink bath, toilet and pedestal vanity (which were totally fabulous in their own quirky way) the main problem with the original bathroom layout was that it was very cramped,” says Sian.

Before bathroom

BEFORE bathroom

The configuration was changed completely and a large mirrored cabinet (in lieu of a vanity) and combined bath/shower were installed: both space-saving measures. “With a baby on the way, we didn’t want to remove the bath altogether so it was a happy compromise,” says Sian.

1A After bathroom

“While large-format white wall tiles help make the space look bigger, we decided on a concrete-look tiled floor, black fittings and timber accents to give the bathroom more character than if it was entirely white,” says Luisa.

Sian, who recommends informing your neighbours when any noisy renovation works are planned, and generally filling them in on your project’s progress, is thrilled with the end result. “You labour over every decision for each and every aspect so you’re emotionally involved in even the littlest things. I completely love the kitchen with its clean lines, mirrored splash back and 11 square metres of storage; but then I also adore the oak modknob door handles we had imported from the US for the bedroom and bathroom doors,” says Sian.

Timber and aluminium combine for beautiful and durable doors

Timber and aluminium doors both bring so much to a home, it’s difficult deciding which to go with. Timber is insulating and adds a traditional touch, while aluminium is so fantastically durable and modern.

If you’re struggling with the choice, check out Stegbar’s Siteline composite doors and windows. They combine the two!

Siteline_Image1_R_CMYK_310_Resize

Featuring wooden interiors, you can get the warm and classy look that is so unique to good quality timber. Both the western red cedar and pine options are beautiful woods. If you want to really showcase that wood grain, you can also get it stained rather than painted.

Shot_26_042_CMYK_310 Ret_Resize

Heading outside, the aluminium exterior frames look contemporary and are super practical and durable. You’ve got to love that they’re virtually maintenance free! They’re anodised, powder-coated and waterproof.

Even better, the most common problem faced by aluminium door owners is minimised by the wooden interior. You can keep your heat in winter and lose it in summer.

Apt1Lvl3Window_017_cmyk_310_Resize

In fact, Siteline products can withstand most weather events. They’re fireproof and treated to resist water saturation. This means they open and close easily without swelling and warping every time.

Stegbar’s national marketing manager, Christine Evans, thinks that environmental and energy conscious renovators in particular will love the composite range. “Due to the properties of the timber, which is sourced from environmentally sustainable forests, energy-efficient glass and single or double glazing options, the windows and doors can help to achieve a six-star energy rating or higher.”

SHOT_08_6216_CidarVersion_R_CMYK_FLAT_EXT_310_resized

There’s plenty of styles to choose from, too. The composites come in bi-fold, awning, casement, sliding and fixed window models, and bi-fold hinged and sliding doors. Not sure which suits you best? The Stegbar Installation Service team are experts at working out what glazing best suits your local conditions, and have lots of tips of product selection too.

Refresh timber with Cabot’s’ new touch up pen

These days it seems everyone is crazy about the vintage look – some even batter away at new wooden furniture and flooring to create that coveted distressed effect. But if worn, vintage timber is not the look you’re going for, Cabot’s touch up pen is the easiest way to disguise unsightly scratches and dints.

CAB000_TouchUpPens“Unsightly chips and scratches on timber doors, floors and furniture can quickly detract from even the most beautiful home,” said Amelia Lutz, Cabot’s brand manager.

111The pen comes in five stains – Black, Walnut Brown, Golden Maple, Honey Oak and Jarrah Redgum – designed to closely resemble the colour of most timber finishes, and is suitable for use on all interior timber, including furniture, doors, flooring.

Cabot’s Touch Up Pen is available from stockists for $8.50 RRP.

Is decking the answer for inner city dwellers tight on space?

For the many inner city dwellers squeezed for space a well-designed deck may be the answer to getting the most from outdoor areas. Decking is a versatile and durable option for creating comfortable outdoor zones, and with proper planning and design a deck will form a natural connection to indoor areas.

Boral Timber Spotted Gum Henley Deck (low res)

Leon Travis from Boral Timber offers the following advice for urban homeowners planning a deck:

1. For a smoother transition from the home’s interior, consider a decking timber species that is no darker than interior flooring. Timber is simple to treat and darken at a later stage if desired; however a naturally dark timber cannot be lightened if homeowners change their mind. Also, consider the direction of interior flooring. Installing timber decking boards accordingly helps to maintain consistent design and flow from indoors to out. Blackbutt species is a popular choice and is available in flooring and decking boards.

2. When choosing timber it is important to bear in mind that only certain species adapt well to decking. Australian hardwood decking is well suited to the Australian climate — from the suburbs to the city.

3. The size of the deck will also contribute to how practical it is. Will it fit a table and chairs, a barbecue, a herb garden or serve as a safe children’s play area? For year round use, consider a weather or shade cover, such as a retractable awning or more permanent shelter, depending on the aspect of the home and how much exposure to the sun it receives at different times of the day. Remember, the angle of sun will also change from winter to summer.

4. If space is limited consider how the area beneath the deck can be used. Depending on the deck’s elevation it can be designed to serve as a functional storage space for outdoor furniture, garden supplies or sporting equipment.

5. Designing and installing a highly functional urban deck can be a complex undertaking, so using a licensed builder is recommended.

Get the natural grey look without sacrificing your timber

The trend for grey timber decks is more popular than ever. However, while simply leaving the timber untreated and open to the elements will achieve the grey look, you risk sacrificing the longevity and quality of your timber. So how can you get the gorgeous look without damaging your deck?

Feast Watson’s new Water Repellent Timber & Deck Oil provides the answer. Formulated especially for exterior timber, it is a water-repellent oil with a clear, matt finish that lets the natural beauty of the timber shine through.

What’s special about Feast Watson Water Repellent Timber & Deck Oil is that it will retain the natural colour of the timber, allowing your deck to grey naturally over time without compromising its quality and long life.

In addition to decking, it is also perfect for timber walkways, fences and pergolas and even areas around waterways, where a timber cleaner cannot be used, such as boardwalks.

Getting the desired results with Feast Watson Water Repellent Timber & Deck Oil is simple. Apply two coats, allowing at least two hours between coats for the oil to penetrate the timber. Feast Watson also recommend maintaining the timber every six months to retain the water repellency and protection.

Feast Watson Water Repellent Timber & Deck Oil is available in a 4-litre size for $96.24.

Beautiful furniture taking sustainability to the next level

It was the words of author Anna Lappé, who said: “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want,” that inspired Don Garvan to start furniture brand Totem Road.

Totem Road 5

Committed to minimising the impact of our modern throwaway culture, Don began creating a range of timeless timber pieces that not only looked amazing but also made a difference socially, environmentally and ecologically. “If you want to encourage more conscious consumerism you have to create products and a community that people love and connect with,” explains Don. “There’s a lot of talk about sustainability at the moment but for us it goes beyond materials and environment. It extends to the communities and everyone that is involved in every part of the Totem Road process, it’s about giving and taking in equal measure.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”KuNyKFMb6XctsNKzESwbQTdMFQFEIfh4″]From initial idea to final product, careful consideration is taken at every step. On a tangible level it starts at the timber, which comes from sustainable sources with a fully traceable chain of custody, and ends at the packaging, which is made from recycled paper materials. However, for Don, sustainability goes far beyond that. “What really makes Totem Road environmentally friendly is creating pieces that are made to last a life time… or three! Classic simple designs made from high quality and solid sustainable natural materials are more likely to survive those style makeovers and less likely to end up in land fill. That’s really what it means to Totem Road to be environmentally friendly.”

Totem Road 4

Offering furniture for the bedroom, dining room and living room, the furniture is designed in Sydney and crafted in Vietnam, by a small team of furniture makers whom Don first worked with over 20 years ago! With a definite mid-century, Scandinavian influence, Totem Road use all solid natural materials, creating a connection with nature. “We focus on simple designs that are carefully considered, allowing the materials to speak for themselves and inform the overall construction. Our intention from the start is to create pieces that will enable you to evolve your own personal style and lay the foundation to a space.”

As a business that favours the beautiful and sustainable you would think it couldn’t get any better, but it does. With Totem Road donating 5% of all sales (that’s sales not profit) to a registered charity of your choice. “The charities we are involved with cover all the things that are important to us: people, community and environment. It’s a big part of who we are and part of a commitment to taking and giving back in equal measure. The plan is to eventually set up our own foundation that gives back to the communities involved in the making of our products.”
