The competition which will see someone’s Ideal House be built

With the challenge to design a project home that was liveable, sustainable and affordable, the finalists in My Ideal House 2016 represent the family home of the future.

savio parsons

Launched by NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes, the competition, run by Australian House & Garden magazine & Mirvac, will see the winning home design built by Mirvac at Crest, a new Mirvac master-planned community in south-west Sydney, with the designer or design team receiving a $25,000 cash prize. The house is expected to be completed in early 2017 with the profits donated to charity.

With six shortlisted designs, the finalists were dominated by young and emerging architects.“The number and quality of entries clearly showed that there is a great deal of enthusiasm for what we set out to achieve,” says Australian House & Garden editor Lisa Green. “What really pleased the judging panel was the innovative ways in which designers approached the challenge of creating homes appropriate to the way we live today.

mather

The finalists all bring a fresh perspective to the design of the family home, focusing on good design that is affordable and future-proof. “We are in the midst of another housing boom and must take care that good design is not sacrificed to the more for less ethos where the worth of a home is measured only by how many bedrooms and bathrooms it can offer,” explains Lisa.

Win the ultimate in stylish shoe storage worth almost $2,000

Sagitine wardrobe storage solutions brilliantly blur the boundaries between art and design. This season, they’re reaching greater design heights with the new 20-stand New York Stand (RRP $1,800). And one of you is going to win one!

sagitinebanner_hires_jacquiturk-1

Following on from the success of the 14-box Shanghai Stand, it’s been designed with a traditional NYC warehouse apartment in mind, where space is a squeeze. Available in black or white, The New York Stand is made from coated cardboard, a powder-coated aluminium stand and solid walnut top, making it feel like a substantial furniture piece rather than simply shoe storage.

newsagitine_hires_jacquiturk-9

Founder and creative director Tina Clark says: “We wanted to modernise the traditional shoe rack with a sleek and contemporary vintage interpretation that will complement both a modern home or an Art Deco space.”

Whatever your storage needs (and nobody says you have to use this for shoes only), The Sagitine New York Stand is easy to assemble and lets you organise your most cherished shoes, frocks, quality silks and happy socks. So take a bite of the big apple and tuck your treasures away for years to come.

Sagitine also provide a range of stackable coated cardboard boxes on their own (from $45-to-$95) in black or white and a range of sizes, each box is topped with a genuine leather handle and gold detail.

Learn bar styling secrets with Merivale (win tickets & dinner)

If we’re honest, when Justin Hemmes opens a new Sydney hospitality venture, we’re probably more interested in its design features than its culinary offering. Original, iconic and market-leading, Hemmes’ Merivale Sydney bars and restaurants are always defined by their fabulous interiors (oh, and the food and drinks too…).

Merivale_Coogee (0) 2

Coogee Pavilion

Next Monday (7 March), Sydneysiders can get the insider tips when Justin and Bettina Hemmes, architect and interior designer Kelvin Ho (of The Paddington and Coogee Pavilion fit-out fame) and stylist Amanda Talbot host an intimate evening called Style Me Merivale at The Ivy. We have two tickets and dinner to give away to a lucky reader but more on that later…

From a venue’s conception to how much its location and food influence its interior, it’s sure to be a hugely informative evening, hosted by Vogue Living editor in chief and The Block judge Neale Whitaker. You’ll learn how to take high-end interior design ideas and translate them to your own home at a fraction of the price.

Coogee (18)

Coogee Pavilion

We chatted to Amanda Talbot, who says while being inspired by others is great, you should always be true to your own style first and foremost. “The biggest advice I can give to people is to design your home for you and not get caught up in the latest trends. Take the anti-design approach so that your home feels timeless and provides comfort.

“The best way to give a hospitality venue longevity is by not getting caught up in current trends as they will date very quickly. The other trap many people fall into is creating spaces that are very themed,” adds Amanda, who loves to mix old and new furniture. I often buy furniture from the Salvation Army or eBay at bargain prices and get it reupholstered. Invest in some custom pieces and give yourself a brief – it’s the perfect way to make sure you stick to your design and don’t stray.

MLF2014_CoogeePav_00066

Coogee Pavilion games area

“With a commercial space, it’s important to get people to connect with an environment without any of their personal belongings and the best way to do this is by connecting to people’s senses, nostalgia and to give the space a buzz.”

As for a venue’s location, it’s a very important consideration when designing from scratch. “Location is fundamental to the interior because it dictates the people who will be coming to the venue and the location also holds history that we can use to inject into the space. For instance, with Coogee Pavilion, I found out Coogee was famous for Sydneysiders to catch a tram from the city and go whale-watching during whale season. The original building also used to house a roller skating and fun park so it gave us the idea to build a games area for children and adults.”

MLF2014_CoogeePav_00137

Coogee Pavilion

What’s on the menu can also dictate the direction the interior takes. “Fred’s is based on head chef Daniel’s philosophies. The food is honest and the cooking is done over an open hearth which gave us the cues for the space.”

MLF2014_CoogeePav_00085

The creative team start with mood boards in what is a very collaborative design process. “We are like a big family on the Merivale projects. I work alongside Justin and Bettina Hemmes and architect Kelvin Ho depending on what project and we all go through every detail together,” says Amanda.

Monday’s event promises to be “all your Pinterest dreams come true”! Tickets are $45 including drinks on arrival. Get your tickets here

One lucky reader will win two tickets to the event plus dinner for two at Uccello –to the value of $150– afterwards. To enter, complete the form below by midnight tomorrow (Thursday 3 March 2016).

Start your New Year in style with a $2,500 home office package from GlobeWest and Haymes

Images courtesy of GlobeWest

The beauty of working from home, if you ask me, is the freedom to create a space to do business or study in that looks and feels exactly as you want it to. Sadly, a lack of cash and/or interior know-how often holds people back from having the home office of their dreams. We’re here to change that by offering you the chance to win a mega prize from GlobeWest and Haymes Paint worth almost $3,000. And while you’re here, we have some expert tips and inspirational exclusive imagery for you too!

Aesthetics vs. practicality with Julia Green

Julia Green, one of our favourite stylists, says restraint is key! “I like to be inspired when sitting at my workspace, but it’s a fine line between having a desk full of beautiful things and enough space to work on it too! Invest in good desk accessories that house the small stuff away and keep the clutter to a minimum. Alternatively, ensure the desk has drawer space for storage. But do have a few points of visual inspo at the ready, even if it’s a written mantra you like to follow, a postcard of your favourite holiday destination or if you are like me, swatches of anything colourful that may prod me creatively! I have a felt “in board” bursting with inspo all year round!”

I wholeheartedly agree that having a chair which is comfortable as well as stylish is important. It usually takes a while to find one that balances ergonomics and aesthetics! Look no further than GlobeWest for options which tick both boxes. My favourite is the Chloe Swivel Chair pictured below. Also on a practical note, Julia recommends getting good task lighting and adding a touch of greenery for a hint of life.

WIN: We’re giving you the chance to win a GlobeWest desk and chair of your choice to the value of RRP $1,500, a Haymes colour consultation worth $160 and $1,000 worth of paint for your study or desk area. Find out how to enter at the end of this post!

Stylist Bek Sheppard on wallpaper

As you can see from our images, you can create amazing effects with both paint and wallpaper, depending on your own personal taste. Stylist Bek Sheppard loves using wallpaper in a study to add interest to an area that people don’t tend to feature in their home. “Many hours can be spent in a study room and I think it should be styled just as beautifully as the rest of your home,” she adds. “Wallpaper helps to create personality and individuality and can give you plenty of colour options to play with. Even if you are not entirely confident on choosing a big bold print, something as subtle as these Emily Ziz designs (pictured) can add a bit of creative interest.”

Bek’s own workspace, the only space which is entirely hers in her home, contains one main artwork which she loves gazing at, surrounded by images of the people, places and trends that inspire her the most. “I have projects, to-do lists, paint swatches and usually an emergency block of dark chocolate by my side! My workspace represents me and my style; it’s graphic and bold with natural elements from my travels.”

How important is your colour choice?

Wendy Rennie, colour and concept manager for Haymes, says: “White walls in a home environment might feel fresh and clean, like a blank canvas, but if they’re in your workplace, it’s time to repaint. Colour can help you achieve your ultimate environment for your most productive self! Colour is one of the quickest and easiest design elements to change often. Think about how you want to feel and interact in the space so you can pick a colour relevant to your work and your own personality.”

She shares the following advice on how different colours can work for you in a home office/study space:

  • Whites & Neutrals: Neutral colours usually serve as a good foundation in office spaces, yet it can be quite boring without any other colour being introduced and some greys in particular lack energy and can be a little oppressive. These shades should be used in small amounts in an office or balanced with a brighter colour, such as red or yellow to increase creativeness and efficiency.
  • Blue: Is known to be the most productive colour. The perfect colour to use for your optimum performance. It positively influences people’s mood and can help to reduce stress. Blue is calming. It promotes creativity, communication, trust, and efficiency. It also helps people with opening the mind to new ideas and a great colour for brainstorming.
  • Green: Environmental psychologist Sally Augustin says green enhances broader thinking, inspires innovation and more creative thought. “There seems to be a positive association between nature and regrowth,” notes Augustin. So if you want to be more productive, consider painting work areas green. Green adds balance and also adds stability in an environment; plants are great in every corner of the office. Connecting nature is the best remedy for stress, and green is the easiest way to have such a connection. A great way to incorporate green into your workspace is with foliage. It is also a great air purifier as a bonus.

Furthermore, Wendy advises: “Both natural and artificial light is essential in any office space; moderation is key, not too dim and not too bright. Low light environments can cause eye strain, headaches, drowsiness and boredom, whilst a room that is too bright can create headaches, fatigue, stress and anxiety. A well-lit office will improve your mood keep you motivated.”

Sydney development wins a World Architecture Festival award

Taking out a top gong at the largest and most prestigious architectural award, the World Architecture Festival (WAF), Sydney’s inner west development Casba has been recognised on the global stage.

Casba_SJB_06

Winning first prize for mixed use completed building, the award celebrates Casba as a leading example of how to balance urban renewal with respect to changing demographics and population growth.

Casba_SJB_02

Designed by SJB in collaboration with BLP, with interiors by BKH and developed by Cornerstone Property Group; Casba is situated on Danks Street, Waterloo, in what is now a foodie and art lovers haven but was once an area dominated by light industry.

Casba_SJB_04

Casba references the warehouse typology of the precinct without displaying a direct, kitsch relationship. “With Casba we wanted to honour the established grain and texture of the Waterloo location, but we had to balance heritage considerations of this former warehouse precinct with the growing expectations of inner city living environments,” says Adam Haddow, director of SJB Sydney.

Casba_SJB_01

Comprising of 65 residential dwellings and 3,000 sqm of retail space, to achieve good urban renewal, Casba was conceived around three guiding elements: a communal, publicly accessible courtyard, a pedestrian link throughout the site and active street edges.

Casba_SJB_05

The design approach was to start with the round-the-clock, publicly accessible, internal courtyard or cloister. To inject character to the public realm of the development and also reference the heritage of the original warehouses, recycled bricks were used in the cloister and throughout. Residential buildings were made of brick and painted white, providing a quiet and restrained backdrop to the residential environment within.

“As our cities grow and the demand for housing options increases, it’s essential that developments not only contribute to the built environment, but also contribute to the society,” says David Leece, director of BLP. “We have an obligation to create places people want to not only sleep and relax, but also connect with their community. We hope we achieved this with Casba.”

gabe & nix 1

With a vision to create quality, on-trend pieces that are not only affordable but enhance your lifestyle, their debut cushion collection, Colour Me Cool, is a mixture of bold prints, metallic finishes and a range of colours that are super easy to style with. “For us, starting with a cushion range made sense as its one of the easiest ways to transform and update your living space,” explains Hayley. “We want people to feel like they can confidently mix and match any of the cushions from our range and instantly update their living space with a cool, current look that’s not going to break the bank.”

gabe nix

Inspired by their travels, be it the colours in nature or international trends, the couple are always snapping photos to form the basis of their designs. “Our design process will start with one basic idea that then takes on a life of its own, quite often very different from the original concept,” says Hayley. “With this particular collection we designed loads of different prints and then decided on our colour palette. From there it was about matching prints with colours and ultimately trying to find the perfect balance between cohesion and variation.”

Now in its 13th year, the highly coveted Overall Winner was taken out by John Wardle Architects with NADAAA for the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne. Part wonder, part utility, the building engages with students as a functional place of learning, while posing extraordinary architectural conundrums for the students to consider.

The residential winners, which let’s admit are always a favourite, saw Arent&Pyke receive the Residential Decoration award for Figtree House. Transforming a beachside Victorian terrace into a home, the design evokes different moods while still being flexible to the needs of a young family. As such, the spaces reflect their purpose: from the composed inky solemnity of the intimate formal zones to the sun bleached lightness of the casual family zones.

The Residential Single award went to MAKE Architecture for the Local House. Inspiration for this extension came from thinking about how this family live and enjoy life. Spaces are playful – conceived more like a favourite local cafe than a private house, reflecting the family’s desire to create a home that allows them to connect with friends, family and their local community.

Finally the Residential Multi award was received by Jackson Clements Burrows for the Upper House, which demonstrates a clarity in urban composition and a social program that engages with its context in a new and positive way. Central to the project, a communal space that is both social and environmental. The unique composition of the building allows the upper levels to float like a cloud.

The awards program receives hundreds of submissions from around the country each year and is recognised as Australia’s premium independent awards program.
