Covet My Coffee Table: With Lucy Fenton of Fenton & Fenton

While eclectic is a bit of a hackneyed word, it’s hard to think of a better term to describe the style of Lucy Fenton, the owner of much-loved Melbourne interiors store Fenton & Fenton. Drawing on her extensive travels, Lucy manages to combine seemingly disparate objects with stylish aplomb – think vintage one-off finds with bold textiles, statement artwork and plenty of colour and texture too. As we bring back our much loved feature Covet My Coffee Table today, we’re delighted to have her share a snippet of her home with us!

Lucy’s lounge room

And as can be expected from an interiors bowerbird like Lucy, her coffee table is an ever-changing tableau. “My coffee table styling changes all the time, but I’ve always got a bit of colour, some greenery and books, books, and more books. I love to mix exotic and one-off finds with contemporary pieces, mixing up shapes and styles. If anything, this has become my signature look,” says Lucy whose lounge room features a coffee table that was designed by her and her team. “It’s the Mahal design and the top is Indian white marble and the base is a powder coated steel. I selected the white on white for our own home, but it also comes with a black marble top or a black frame too. Being a smallish room, I didn’t want anything too heavy and felt a round table would soften the otherwise angular shapes in the room.”

The all-important coffee table styling ingredient – books!

“The right coffee table can make or break a space. It’s a bit like fitting the final piece in a puzzle. Too big and it can look clunky, too small and it’s not functional. So form and function are key to getting it right. The coffee table is one of the hardest working pieces in a house. The kids play around it, you serve food and drinks from it, it holds books, treasures and memories. In most instances, it’s smack bang in the middle of a room too, so it should complement the rest of the space,” says Lucy.

Lucy’s coffee table features a Fenton & Fenton wire cube, selection of books and aloe vera in a vintage glass vase

Currently, Lucy’s coffee table features aloe vera cuttings displayed inside a vintage coloured glass vase, picked up at a market in Daylesford, VIC. “It complements the delicate display domes and glassware by the talented Amanda Dziedzic that also feature in our living room.” The wire cube is from Fenton & Fenton and it is displayed alongside an array of books. “Being a fashion and interior lover, there’s always a pile of books for end of the day inspo. A coffee or side table just doesn’t feel complete without a stack of my favourite books. I love it when guests flick through them and I love checking out what other people are reading when visiting their homes,” says Lucy.

You can see Lucy LOVES colour!

“Being a total colour enthusiast, I love how what you put atop a coffee table can change a space, alter a mood and tell a story about who lives in the house. I don’t like coffee tables (or much for that matter) left empty, but also not too hectic either. Only ever put pieces you really love on your coffee table, and don’t forget the books and plants or flowers. They bring colour and personality into a space.”

Covet My Coffee Table: Interiors Addict’s Amy Collins-Walker

Photography by Penny Lane

Meet Amy Collins-Walker, Interiors Addict features writer, interior stylist and mum of two. This week we’re bringing back Covet My Coffee Table with a look inside her Perth home.

amy1

That’s a cool statement coffee table! Why did you pick it, where did you buy it, how long have you had it? I bought the coffee table almost four years ago from Empire Homewares. It’s made from a tree root and no two are ever the same. It’s a special piece and I love its organic aesthetic. There’s even a piece of limestone wedged between a couple of the branches — I’m a big fan of bringing the outdoors in. I also love a design statement and it certainly ticks that box.

amy2

amy3

How important do you think a coffee table is as a piece of furniture? As furniture items go, the coffee table is pretty integral. Aside from its obvious functionality it can really tie a space together and act as the hero piece in the room. I would always favour a statement coffee table for that reason.

How much difference to your room do you think styling your coffee table can make? Styling up your coffee table can make a huge difference to your lounge room. Aside from the design aspect, coffee table styling is a great way to reveal your passions and interests. It’s also a space that can be ever-changing, depending on what you’re into at any given time.

amy4

Why do you have what you have on your table and do you change it up often? I always have a large vase with a bunch of blooms or even just some green foliage. The yellow bird is from my favourite shop in the Blue Mountains, Inner Space, and it used to have a stand until my toddler broke it! It now rests on a copper jug given to me by a dear friend. The metallic gold and white jar is from that shop too — I love a metallic splash and particularly as a contrast to the natural wood of the coffee table. The heart is a piece of Mexican folk art — it’s hand-carved and covered in good luck charms. The books are a random selection of some of my favourites in the design, art and photography spheres. I used to change up my coffee table a bit more regularly but mostly now I change the vase and blooms as, with two small children, my free time is minimal.

amy6

So, do the children influence what’s on your coffee table? Having two small children certainly does influence what I place on my coffee table. Ironically, I could never leave a coffee there! Most of the items are unbreakable but if they aren’t, they’re too heavy to move like a large vase. Obviously I’ve had some casualties though — the bird for one!

amy7

As a stylist, what are your top tips for our readers on how to style their coffee table if they don’t know where to start? Firstly, the things on your coffee table should always have meaning; they should be things you love and enjoy. Second, I think fresh flowers or foliage are a must and that can be as simple as some greenery plucked from your garden. You don’t need to spend a lot of money. You should also make sure to include pieces of varying height and texture too — both key to any styled vignette!

Covet My Coffee Table: with stylist Lucia Braham

Welcome back to our much loved Covet My Coffee Table feature! It’s been too long! Today, we’re sharing a snapshot of the home of Lucia Braham. Many of us struggle with styling our coffee tables, yet done well, they can really make or break a living room. Who better to show us the ropes than a stylist? Over to Lucia…

IMG_5629 - Version 2

“The styling on my coffee table is ever evolving and changing, depending on the seasons, what I’m working on, recent travels or my latest obsession. Styling throughout your home, I believe, should be a reflection of you, and a coffee table is the perfect platform to tell a micro story.

IMG_5508

“Books and magazines are an obvious element. I love to stack them at different heights to create layers and plinths for other pieces. Some sort of greenery, even a leafy branch in a vase, always adds a little life.

IMG_5650

“The candle is a limited edition fragrance/collaboration between Lumira and Monster Children which I absolutely love. The Henry Wilson Vide Poche was a gift for Christmas.

IMG_5607

“I’m always swapping plants around to different spots in my home which I find keeps them thriving. I’m obsessed with artisan ceramics at the moment and loving this pot and tray by Wingnut & Co. The shapes are from Marble Basics, and the circular glass boxes are from HAY.”

Covet my coffee table: with PR guru Sarah Cichy

Photography by Susan Papazian

Often when I see the beautiful coffee tables of designers and stylists, I can’t help but think they look too gorgeous to touch. But houses are meant to be lived in, they’re meant to be enjoyed and of course, get a little messy! So when Sarah Cichy, founder of boutique agency Piccolo PR showed me her coffee table, and said to me: “Yes it should be beautiful, but a cup of coffee needs to feel welcome here.” I thought: “This girl gets it!”

Papazian_151023_0981
Sarah

“When styling your coffee table think less clutter and more colour,” explains Sarah. “Simple, vibrant pieces will help empower, rather than overwhelm the room. I also like to start with the size of the table and select treasures to help balance it, rather than compromise the space.”

Papazian_151023_1102

Purchasing her coffee table from a Melbourne homewares store many years ago, it is oversized with strong lines. A huge fan of reading it also doubles as a bookshelf, housing Sarah’s extensive collection of books and magazines. “I love reading — anything I can get my hands on that tells a story. I actually think I own more books than clothes, which is odd for a girl. So my coffee table naturally reflects this and is covered by beautiful interior books I’ve collected throughout the years.”

Papazian_151023_1060

Often introduced to new homewares as a result of her work, Sarah has to reign herself in when it comes to styling! “I have to repeat to myself: ‘Less is more Sarah, less is more.’” Believing the coffee table should be an authentic showcase of your personality, she favours the quirky over the traditional. “I’m a design-gypsy myself, a little bit from here, with a little bit from there. It’s unexpected really. Fresh flowers are often replaced by foliage — such as fig trees — and candle holders become vases.”

Papazian_151023_1063

Definitely not colour-conservative when it comes to decor and design, Sarah’s home — much like her coffee table — is a ‘colour-smash’. “Bubble pink and green are my favourite shades, for no other reason than I just love them! I always make sure anything displayed on my coffee table helps bounce these colours around the room.”

Covet my Coffee Table: with Georgie Abay of The Grace Tales

As the founder of a blog whose slogan is, “for the stylish mother” it should come as no surprise that Georgie Abay’s home is extremely beautiful. The mastermind behind The Grace Tales, the ultimate online destination for multi-tasking mums, and an ex-fashion journo, she treats her interior decoration process in much the same way she does dressing herself.

Georgie Abay-Covet My Coffee Table 1

“I’ve always been into investment dressing. I buy less but buy well. I am the same with interiors! That said, with two young children, you can’t be too precious about your home (or clothes). I use lots and lots of neutrals with a bit of print thrown in. I love floral prints and they are everywhere in my home. Seriously. Everywhere. From our Laura Jones painting to our Derek Henderson print to our Christopher Farr Cloth pillows – my poor husband!”

Georgie Abay-Covet My Coffee Table 2

However, while those pops of colour and floral prints certainly jump out at you, for me it is actually her coffee table, with its zinc top and Mangowood timber base, that takes centre stage. “I bought it online from Sasson Home shortly after my first daughter was born. We needed something that was kid-friendly and the round shape and low height meant there were no sharp corners for banging heads on! Also the zinc top picks up the silver tones in our home really nicely.”

Georgie Abay-Covet My Coffee Table 3

She’s forever changing what’s on her coffee table but “a vase filled with fresh flowers is always my favourite piece.” Georgie buys flowers weekly: “It’s my little indulgence and makes me happy.”

Also on display are beautiful fashion and interiors books, candles and little trinkets collected from her travels. “I travelled a lot in my 20s and have saved a few select pieces (I hate clutter so don’t hang on to a lot), such as this gorgeous wooden bowl from Guatemala and I love my piece of coral on top of my pile of books.”

Georgie Abay-Covet My Coffee Table

NwKsH-8eUvudjWjf78-BnZhNenslLPN0kW-Rd3Bg8wM

Looking at Georgie’s layered display it’s easy to think styling a coffee table is much easier said than done. Yet that doesn’t have to be the case, rather if you have fun and keep it simple, Georgie believes it’s really not that hard… she promises! “Have fun with it — styling your coffee table is a great creative outlet! Keep it simple – there’s nothing worse than too much clutter. You should love every single item on your coffee table. If you don’t have time to style your coffee table properly, my three quick essentials are fresh flowers, a book and a candle.”

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Ioanna Lennox

Interior designer Ioanna Lennox knows how tricky styling coffee tables can be and she’s a professional! So today, we’re sharing what’s on hers as well as her tips on making yours beautiful.

ioanna lennox coffee table 1

“Coffee tables are one of those things that people struggle with. They need to be functional and practical and look good at the same time. Function over form or form over function? How do we combine both? Personally, I’m a big fan of ottomans as coffee tables. Large ottomans that can have one or two trays on them, piles of favourite books and personal artefacts that mean to something to us. Or even small ottomans that are striking and make a huge impact but prevent things from getting too messy or cluttered because of their compact size.

ioanna lennox coffee table 2

“In our home, I’ve opted for the latter. My husband hates coffee tables in formal living areas and believes less is more. So rather than going for a more traditional coffee table, we’ve compromised on having a small French-inspired ottoman serve as a coffee table. I had it upholstered in one of my favourite fabrics, Kelly Wearstler’s Flair Noir, and had its frame finished in an antique silver bronze that matches the Louis armchair sitting behind it. I decided to have the chair upholstered in a rich deep blue velvet so that the wild black and white chevron-inspired print of the ottoman stands out even more.”

Being a fairly small ottoman, Ioanna doesn’t have the luxury of having all her go-to interior design books on hand so she tends to rotate them. “For instance, I recently attended Greg Natale’s book launch and of course, had to get the book! So being the newest addition to my design books collection, it’s on the table right now. There’s also an Audrey Hepburn book that both my daughter and I love to look at which tends to reside there all the time.”

ioanna lennox coffee table 3

Flowers are another must-have staple. “The more I decorate with flowers, the more I appreciate the way they define spaces by adding layers of colours, texture and shape –you can really turn up the volume of how loud or soft you want a room to be simply through the flower selection or arrangement you choose. I tend to gravitate towards soft pastel shades of pink or white for the living room and display them in a matt ceramic sculptural vase from BoConcept. The vase goes beautifully with the Jonathan Adler Dora Muse candle, which is a great example of form and function blended into something beautiful and unique. Oh, and its scent is to die for!”

Ioanna loves to arrange everything on a black and gold tray and layer the vase and candle on top: the candle, the vase, some coasters to have on hand and a bronze whale tail that her son likes to wave around pretending it’s an aeroplane! “Good interior design is made up of layers – overt, subtle, visible and invisible. Layers tell stories about the people who live there are and build rooms.”

Display boxes are another favourite. She was recently given the black and white bone zig zag box as a present. “We also use it to dump keys and sunglasses when we come into the house then pop the lid on and it’s all tidy and out of sight! The only problem is when we forget the keys are there and go searching for them for 10 minutes!

“My absolute indulgence in the room is to come downstairs once the kids are finally in bed, glass of wine in hand, soft jazz music humming in the background, light the candles and curl up in the armchair surrounded by my favourite design books or collection of Belle magazines. I flick, I sip, I ponder. It’s in that space that I get inspired, dream and creations come alive. For me, that’s home.”

Covet my Coffee Table: Nathan and Jaynie Johnson of Blacklist

Photos by Jacqui Turk

Welcome to the home of the talented, lovely and photogenic Nathan and Jaynie Johnson who own Blacklist, one of our favourite places to buy affordable Aussie art. 2014 was a great and busy year for them, including renovations and the birth of their gorgeous son Dare (pictured), their second child.

blacklist_jacquiturk-11

“We have lots of books on our ottoman that we like to use as inspiration and to relax. We have Lero Grannis, an encyclopaedia on palms and lots of books on fashion around,” Jaynie says. “We get most of our books online from The Book Depository. We also have a Mad Et Len candle which we bought from Island Luxe in Bangalow (one of my all time favourite stores).”

blacklist_jacquiturk-6

blacklist_jacquiturk-5

The pair bought their child-friendly ottoman from Charbella in Cronulla. “It’s handmade in Africa and we love it as it’s the perfect height and is easy for the kids. We didn’t want anything that they could knock as coffee tables always seem to be the perfect height for kids to hit their heads on. We also love that we can move it out of the way super easy and it doubles as a seat and foot rest when we need it to,” Jaynie adds.

The couple don’t always have a coffee table/ottoman so they needed a flexible and easily moved piece of furniture. “Sometimes we love to have it out with some of our treasures on display, and other times we just like to have the space in front of the lounge to play. It’s definitely part practical/part décor.

Nathan, Jaynie and baby Dare, at home in Cronulla

“We tend to not put glass on it, but we do like to leave items on it as we encourage our kids to not touch things that they shouldn’t. Dare is too young at the moment to try to grab things but Willow has always been brought up with the encouragement to not touch certain things and she has been very self controlled with it. We obviously ensure anything potentially dangerous is out of reach, such as antlers!”

Nathan and Jaynie have just finished renovating their kitchen and loved hosting family in it for Christmas. “We haven’t had an oven for four years,” Jaynie reveals. “We took ages to decide on what we wanted to do with the space but finally enlisted the help of our architect friend and the amazing ITF cabinetmakers and we have come up with a more than we could have hoped or dreamed for kitchen. We are about to start designing our bathrooms and then we will be almost finished with the house which is very exciting for us. It’s been a sloooooow process.”

blacklist_jacquiturk-1

The Johnsons’ home has a colour palette of black, white and timber and they love bringing in different textures. “Essentially, our interior style at home now is sophisticated seaside grunge!”

Jaynie’s favourite places to buy homewares include eBay, Les Interieurs, Water Tiger, Major Minor for linen and Retro Wombat in Thirroul.

blacklist_jacquiturk-2

Excitingly, Blacklist are about to launch The Black Factory. “We are currently turning an industrial warehouse into a hub for creatives with a photographic area, meeting rooms, desk spaces in an awesome mezzanine and warehousing, so we will be taking applications for tenants from early-to-mid January,” Jaynie says.

They’re also launching their first greetings card collection and journals in February at Life InStyle Sydney. Not to mention a new art print collection, Not All Who Wander are Lost. “We are eagerly awaiting the new year as it brings with it so many new opportunities and we can’t wait!”

Covet my coffee table: with style guru Melissa Penfold

Photography by Jacqui Turk

If there’s one thing  Melissa Penfold knows, it’s how to create a classy, expensive look without spending a small fortune; something we can’t get enough of at Interiors Addict. We couldn’t wait to see what’s on Melissa’s coffee table and how she styles her living room space.

MelissaPenfold_JacquiTurk-

“Some sneer at coffee tables, but for me they’re an indispensable accessory,” Melissa Penfold says. “You want to be able to put a glass, teacup or book down without thinking, but you don’t want coffee tables to block important traffic routes through a room or involve you in awkward manoeuvres when you reach for your evening aperitif. Stability and positioning are vital. My favourite options are Chinese black lacquer stools, glass or timber tables with metal frames or ottomans with a hard top. A pair of cross-based stools can also look terrifically chic.”

There are just a few books on her coffee table!”I always choose ones with lovely pictures covering subjects such as houses, gardens, food, flowers, travel and art. I pile up glossy hard-covered books to the edges of my coffee table. Four to six deep piles. Not only do I think books finish a room but they also reflect your personal style. For me, books are central to an interior, the ultimate finishing touch. I use them like works of art. They are decorative, interesting and a statement that you are interested in the world.”

MelissaPenfold_JacquiTurk-2686

Melissa also stacks her coffee table with beautiful things that inspire her, from coral to bowls, boxes, baskets and flowers. “It’s a passing parade of covetables. That’s the magic of decorating. You can can change one group of accessories for a new lot and instantly update a space. I find my books and bits at shops everywhere: high-end, bargain, online, offline. I never shop with an agenda, I find the best things when I’m not looking.”

Browse the Covet My Coffee Table section

She bought the Chinese stool many years ago at Oriental Arts (now closed). “Try Orient House for similar pieces. It’s a brilliant source of tables of every kind, old and new in lacquer, timber, bamboo, the lot. A-list designers swear by the place.”

MelissaPenfold_JacquiTurk-2720

Melissa recently launched a website covering the latest in interiors, design and shopping. “I am also offering a fab new e-decor service which is a quick hit of professional design advice for a single room or your whole house. It’s about engaging with design-savvy folk who are looking for a quicker, more affordable way of decorating their rooms, for less than a traditional decorator. It’s a flat-fee design service with a transparent pricing system, that’s about sourcing the right door knob, table lamps, fabric, furniture, blinds or paint colour for you and your interior. If it becomes a bigger project, and you want a hand in actually executing what we have suggested, we hand you over to one of our preferred decorators who we think is perfect for your job.”

MelissaPenfold_JacquiTurk-2692

She describes her own home as about 70 percent classic, and 30 percent trends. “I think that’s the best ratio for ensuring that your interior is both timeless and up-to-the-minute. My own style is a mix of things from all times and places. Interestingly, our new country pad has a laid-back, contemporary, casual look with aged timber floors, bagged ecru walls, white woodwork, raw stone fireplaces, and lots of easy pieces that can be mixed and matched. I’ve filled it with old and new sofas and armchairs slip-covered in tactile natural stone and white linens, timber tables and weathered cabinets painted in muted hues. It’s a relaxed way to live.”

MelissaPenfold_JacquiTurk-2685

Melissa is a former columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald on all things style and currently writes for House & Garden. She wrote Melissa Penfold’s Little Black Book and co-authored Australian Style.

Covet my coffee table: with Shoes of Prey co-founder Jodie Fox

Jodie Fox is the co-founder of design your own shoes website Shoes of Prey. This week, she’s sharing her coffee table with us, which is actually an old shipping trunk from Mitchell Road Auction House in Sydney. The award-winning entrepreneur is a sentimental soul who loves collecting items from her travels or to mark special moments in her life.

JodieFox_jacquiturk-1

“I love the colour and wooden panels on the trunk,” says Jodie. “Mostly, I love that it has a luggage stamp from South Hampton!

“My home is my sanctuary. I don’t like to have a lot of things, but the things I do have, I want to be meaningful and beautiful so that when I get home I can really relish that space. I collect things when I travel, or when I am experiencing something special. I normally collect without a whole lot of thought given to where things will go. I’m such a sentimental girl. Ultimately, things do find their place in my home in a way that is cohesive.”

JodieFox_jacquiturk-6

On Jodie’s coffee table is an album, Alanka, that a friend of hers just released. “It’s been something she has had in her mind for so many years, so it’s a real privilege to see it come to life.

“I love a good scented candle as much as the next girl. I light them whenever I am doing yoga, just to create a little bit of atmosphere and focus. This particular candle I bought the day we closed our first round of funding for Shoes of Prey and I think it’s so special that I still haven’t lit it. Odd and sentimental, I know!”

JodieFox_jacquiturk-5

Wherever there are books, Jodie, who travels often for business, feels at home. “Some of my most prized are on the coffee table, within easy reach to flip through and read.”

Covet my coffee table: with Caroline Khoo of nectar & stone

Caroline Khoo is the owner of boutique chocolate and dessert company nectar and stone, whose creations I’ve been admiring on Instagram for the past few weeks. The Melbourne brand’s sweet treats are works of art (and available to buy online, don’t worry!). So it’s perhaps no surprise Caz’s coffee table is a pretty one too. I think her former life in fashion also shines through.

IMG_5991

So, what’s on it?

The coffee table was handmade by her father, who is a carpenter. “I am a lover of handmade items as I feel it connects me with the person and my father always loves a challenge,” she said. “The coloured faceted bowls were handmade by misskellymadeintasmania (I totally need some of my own, don’t you?!). I asked her to make a collection for me in the nectar and stone colour hues. I have over 15 of these bowls in various shades.”

IMG_6016
Caz Khoo of nectar and stone

The geometric glass jar is from Anthropologie and was bought on a trip to LA in August. the books were gifts from her husband, who knows Caz’s love of interiors and colour. And the ombre pineapple chocolates with gold leaf detail are, of course, handmade by nectar and stone.

Caz was kind enough to send me a box and I can vouch for them tasting as good as they look. But I did feel bad about eating something so gorgeous! But not that bad…

Covet my coffee table: Adore Home magazine’s Loni Parker

Loni Parker is the founder of Adore Home magazine who recently published her very own coffee table book, Adore. We asked her to share what’s on her coffee table. Turns out Loni has a penchant for coral and anything gold!

coffeetable3DSC_1877

“My coffee table is actually an upholstered ottoman — it’s great because it’s soft enough to put your feet up, but sturdy enough to sit a tray of my favourite decorator items on. On my coffee table you’ll find a black mirrored tray from Freedom, a gold vase from Highgate House (peonies are my favourite flowers, but when they’re not in season I can’t go past roses or snapdragons) and gold urchins from my trip to the US last year (one was purchased in Palm Springs and the other in San Francisco so every time I look at them it takes me back to those places!).

coffeetableDSC_1896

“I also have Kelly Wearstler’s book Modern Glamour on there, and like to rotate it up every now and then including my own book, Adore. Coral is a must for me — it’s one of those things I’m addicted to buying — when I walk into a store that has coral I go weak at the knees and have to have it! I think it must be my kryptonite!”

Loni Parker

Loni also loves candles and has a pink Voluspa one sitting on her table. “I’m always buying new candles (another weakness of mine) so this usually gets changed up pretty regularly around here.”

Loni is raising funds to print a hard copy of Adore Home magazine via Pozible. Pre-order your copy here.

Covet my coffee table: with fashion illustrator Kerrie Hess

I’m not surprised this coffee table set-up is as glam and gorgeous as it is! It belongs to Australian fashion illustrator Kerrie Hess.

“My grandma’s vintage blue sugar bowl which I use as a mini vase is something that I really cherish,” she says. “The Jo Loves perfume scent is Pamplemo which smells like fresh grapefruit and reminds me of my last trip to London.”

Kerrie’s own work, the Little Black Dress print, is almost sold out, so she’s enjoying displaying it while she still can!

Two of her favourite books are The Dressing Table by Clare Press and Things We Love by Kate Spade.

Got your eye on that print? You can buy Kerrie’s work online.

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Kim Pearson

It took interior designer and stylist Kim Pearson almost 20 years to find the perfect coffee table and when she did, she bought two!

AGCl7FeDCek5HlOoTtw8AcffRnyS0QEF4Xd6zKrJDmA,yBDvBCAmfRauGzB6EhO9Oowj4M799LP4Yr7OoGSH41U,AIY4Cq8zd0UHIU5JIw4tC7PV7uh_7vkfpPSNBKIiMB8

“We’re floor dwellers so we invested in rugs and vast floor cushions instead, with children and dogs crawling/sprawled around and over us! I stumbled (actually kind of really did fall over) upon these tables in a sale a few years ago, reduced from literally thousands to hundreds. Worth a 20 year wait! American, made of polished nickel, solid walnut and glass, they are heavy and polished and refined and robust all at the same time in a classic tray table style. Timber shelf below and nickel framed heavy, clear glass above. Low too, which I like. One wasn’t enough though as I like a coffee table to be generous so I bought two rectangles, pushed them together and voila, one big square one!”

Screen Shot 2014-09-04 at 10.01.01 am

It’s nestled in front of the fire and surrounded by squishy velvet, feather-filled sofas and old Victorian armchairs. (Yes, I want to live there too!) “It’s covered in piles and piles of books and mags — British Vogue, World of Interiors, Vogue Living, Vanity Fair,” says WA-based Kim. “There are masses of coffee table books; a delicious vice of mine. I’m a sucker for a great cover and I sometimes buy them just for that and enjoy swapping them around according to size, colour and topic.”

The roses are from her garden. “I keep the flowers low using old silver, glass and ceramic bowls. Candles too, Ciré Trudon — Ernesto and Roi Soleil — being my all time favourites. And what’s missing is the Smarties. Because I ate them !”

Covet my coffee table: with Tash Sefton from TheyAllHateUs

Today’s coffee table belongs to Tash Sefton, one half of the hugely succesful Sydney fashion blog, TheyAllHateUs.

Tash 4-1

“Our house is full of books, of mainly fashion and interiors, that I have collected from all my travels,” says the full-time blogger. “I love piling them up on hand to read. I currently have a pile at the base of my coffee table.

“I always have the latest magazines from overseas – my fave Vanity Fair, Vogue Paris and British Vogue. And I love having my personal items around me. Here are a few Chanel bags. They make me happy! I always have fresh flowers and candles from my friend Kirsten (Walker) who makes Palm Beach Collection.”

Tash was formerly a buyer and head of womenswear for a leading Australian fashion retailer. More often pictured looking effortlessly stylish in her signature ripped denim, she says the coffee table is the central part of her living room, often piled with toys when her sons use it as a play station! “We also use it as a dining table — we love sitting on the floor around it. Oh, and it’s my husband foot stool when he watches the TV!” We love a multi-functional piece!

Her tips for styling a coffee table? “Change it daily.”

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Diane Bergeron

Diane Bergeron is a renowned interior designer based in Melbourne and founder of the new Mercer School of Interior Design. Today, she shares the contents of her eBay find coffee table with us!

“I have a huge assortment of books because I love to have my inspiration at my fingertips,” Diane says. “One of my most cherished books is the special edition of Windows at Bergdorf Goodman because it’s aspirational and it chronicles the amazing work of one of my oldest friends, David Hoey.

“My coffee table is covered in books of my favourite photographers and artists such as Slim Aarons, Alex Katz and Elizabeth Peyton. I took the names for my Arthur G furniture line from inspirational women and that’s how the Peyton sofa got its name.

“The coffee table itself was one of my happiest finds on eBay. We had to get it delivered from Sydney but it was worth it. The ceramic impression of Roy Lichtenstein’s Girl with Hair Ribbon was handmade by my daughter Coco. I found both the vintage brass ram’s head bust on a lucite plinth and the gorgeous marble obelisks at antique stores while I was still living in America but you can find like items at Graham Geddes for those shopping locally.

“I’m obsessed with my natural and gold agate coasters ($125) from Jonathan Adler because they add a unique touch and texture to the whole setting. The decorative gold bone inlay box is another one-off from America but you can find like items at Safade in Melbourne.

Covet my coffee table: with Alisa Fraser from The Block

This week’s coffee table comes to you from the home of Alisa Fraser, one half of the (rarely seen apart!) Block-winning twins, Alisa and Lysandra.

“I have collected most of my coffee books whilst travelling,” says Alisa. “The small pink plate, tea cup and metal teapot are antiques my mum has given me as gifts. The two turquoise jars are from our online store.”

“Every coffee table needs fresh flowers and of course, coffee table books! It’s always nice to have sentimental or meaningful ornaments to bring personality and individuality to your home. Trays and candles are also a very simple but effective way to style any table. Balance is a hard thing to get right so make sure your decor is in proportion to the size of your table.”

The coffee table itself is the GUS from Globe West, available through Alisa & Lysandra Collections.

Covet my coffee table: with Robyn Holt

Today’s coffee table (technically side table!) belongs to Robyn Holt. While many of you will know her as a past judge on TV show The Renovators, Robyn has an impressive background with roles including previous head of Vogue and Monocle magazines, Colette Dinnigan and the Yves Saint Laurent beauty division. Robyn is a business advisor to several Australian interior designers and a regular on Instagram and 7 Vignettes.

The rear of Robyn’s house faces north east and the sun pours in in the mornings, making this a favourite corner of hers. “I moved a 19th Century drop side card table with original felt top, given to me by a great friend, to sit in front of the bookshelves and to be slightly on the edge of the seating area. It’s something for my guests to look at when they’re on the sofa. I have it open all the time and on it rests a series memories but always room for a cup of coffee.”

The silver dishes are from Asprey’s in London and were given to Robyn and her daughter for special birthdays. The crab is Japanese and was bought at a market for $15. “Then there’s my Hermes note pad with soft unstructured cover and my Richard Avedon book (he is my hero). Books say a lot to me and almost every surface in my house is stacked with them. Part of this group is a book about Edith Head, a reminder of her creative ways with wardrobe, and Peter Beard, whose adventures in Africa reflect another time.”

The striking coral, bought from the late Paul Bruce, is one of Robyn’s most treasured possessions. The table sits with a view into the bookshelf, where two early Dinosaur Designs vases sit on piles of books. “Punctuated between the books sit an icon (a memory from Russia) and some glass objects found in my father’s tool box! Fresh poppies work well in my newest auction room buy: a blackened bronze cup with classic scenes.

“I believe that beauty comes from layers and patina and this corner has many layers and many memories.”

If you’d like to tap into some of Robyn’s experience and talent, she is running small business makeover workshops with Megan Morton’s The School. Find out more here. Read our previous interview with Robyn here.

Covet my coffee table: with stylist Kirsten Bookallil

This week’s Covet My Coffee Table is a very classic and neutral affair from the home of stylist Kirsten Bookallil. I love its simplicity.

kirsten bookallil coffee table

The coffee table has a handmade, wrought iron frame and glass top and was designed by renowned interior designer Marco Meneguzzi. Kirsten says: “I love how simple it is. It weighs a ton. I used to put a lot of things on my coffee table to display but I like using it too much and had to keep moving things off, so now I have lots of credenzas for displaying items.”

The books are ones she likes to reference often and are written by or about women who inspire her: Carine Roitfeld, Kate Moss and Linda Macartney.

“There is a barnacle cluster I bought from Parterre Garden which is a lovely colour, and I have six Henry Dean (from Anibou) grey, hand blown glass hurricane lamps which look beautiful when lit.”
