Block’s Matt & Kim launch a fresh take on concrete homewares

Let’s face it, we saw a LOT of concrete in homewares last year. So much in fact that it perhaps started to lose its initial appeal as something new and unique. And we also reported that not all concrete is created equal, with some products not standing the test of time.

nood-photoshoot-145
I never knew I wanted a blush pink sink. Until now.

But Matt and Kim DiCosta’s new Nood Co has impressed us. Their team have spent the past 18 months designing, testing and refining real concrete. Their huge range encompasses everything from indoor/outdoor dining tables to sinks and vanity sets, and coffee and side tables to mirrors, stools homewares. And will you look at that colour palette? Divine. There are seven stunning colours: Ivory, Pastel Peach, Blush Pink, Mint, Copan Blue, Mid Tone Grey and Charcoal.

While concrete is traditionally thought of as tough, masculine and industrial, Nood Co have added colour and curves. They’ve also worked hard to solve many of the past problems of concrete. The designs are feminine and contemporary, the concrete is thinner and stronger and they’ve set a new standard in water tolerance and abrasion resistance.

nood-photoshoot-109

Product designer Matt says: “When we sat down to structure Nood Co, we wrote an honest list of why concrete hadn’t effectively joined the world of furniture yet. It was bulky, heavy, untransportable, it wasn’t sealed effectively enough to match consumer expectations. A lot if it was fake (faux) to look like concrete but had no real quality of finish/integrity. No one had made it beautiful, affordable, functional, transportable. We changed all of that.”

Kim and Matt

Along with improved product standards, Nood Co has made the shopping experience much easier. They offer free delivery to all capital cities in Australia, on any product. “Our concrete pieces are lighter and much, much stronger than anything else on the market, so we are able to transport these pieces anywhere in the world. With that luxury, we decided to offer free delivery to create ease for our customers. The Nood team are avid designers and furniture shoppers themselves and understand how important a smooth shopping experience is.”

nood-photoshoot-677

Matt says that for concrete to be accepted as a legitimate furniture item, it has to be usable in all styles of interiors, in all rooms in a house and to suit all moods. “Curves are the uniting design feature of Nood Co’s collection. All square corners have been removed. Everything is thin, silky and sleek. The products are sealed to deal with kids, spills and house parties. They are real world products, with a showroom finish.”

Covet My Coffee Table: Interiors Addict’s Amy Collins-Walker

Photography by Penny Lane

Meet Amy Collins-Walker, Interiors Addict features writer, interior stylist and mum of two. This week we’re bringing back Covet My Coffee Table with a look inside her Perth home.

amy1

That’s a cool statement coffee table! Why did you pick it, where did you buy it, how long have you had it? I bought the coffee table almost four years ago from Empire Homewares. It’s made from a tree root and no two are ever the same. It’s a special piece and I love its organic aesthetic. There’s even a piece of limestone wedged between a couple of the branches — I’m a big fan of bringing the outdoors in. I also love a design statement and it certainly ticks that box.

amy2

amy3

How important do you think a coffee table is as a piece of furniture? As furniture items go, the coffee table is pretty integral. Aside from its obvious functionality it can really tie a space together and act as the hero piece in the room. I would always favour a statement coffee table for that reason.

How much difference to your room do you think styling your coffee table can make? Styling up your coffee table can make a huge difference to your lounge room. Aside from the design aspect, coffee table styling is a great way to reveal your passions and interests. It’s also a space that can be ever-changing, depending on what you’re into at any given time.

amy4

Why do you have what you have on your table and do you change it up often? I always have a large vase with a bunch of blooms or even just some green foliage. The yellow bird is from my favourite shop in the Blue Mountains, Inner Space, and it used to have a stand until my toddler broke it! It now rests on a copper jug given to me by a dear friend. The metallic gold and white jar is from that shop too — I love a metallic splash and particularly as a contrast to the natural wood of the coffee table. The heart is a piece of Mexican folk art — it’s hand-carved and covered in good luck charms. The books are a random selection of some of my favourites in the design, art and photography spheres. I used to change up my coffee table a bit more regularly but mostly now I change the vase and blooms as, with two small children, my free time is minimal.

amy6

So, do the children influence what’s on your coffee table? Having two small children certainly does influence what I place on my coffee table. Ironically, I could never leave a coffee there! Most of the items are unbreakable but if they aren’t, they’re too heavy to move like a large vase. Obviously I’ve had some casualties though — the bird for one!

amy7

As a stylist, what are your top tips for our readers on how to style their coffee table if they don’t know where to start? Firstly, the things on your coffee table should always have meaning; they should be things you love and enjoy. Second, I think fresh flowers or foliage are a must and that can be as simple as some greenery plucked from your garden. You don’t need to spend a lot of money. You should also make sure to include pieces of varying height and texture too — both key to any styled vignette!

Designers Interviews The Block

Ebony tells all about her second chance on The Block with Luke

The Block starts again this Sunday and I can’t wait! Adding to my usual excitement about a new series is the fact that WA siblings Ebony and Luke, my early favourites from the last series, are back for a second chance. I couldn’t wait to chat to Ebony Haythornthwaite about keeping this huge secret for the last few months and what we can expect from the Block-togon!

Luke and Ebony on last series
Luke and Ebony on last series

The pair found out they were getting a second chance on the show when they attended the auctions for Triple Threat. “We had become really great mates with the contestants we met during the eliminations, in particular Jess and Ayden. They invited us over to be a part of the celebrations and whilst we were there we are asked to take part in a short interview. We were under the impression it was regarding the auction results and Luke and I didn’t think much of it. We opened the door and were met with Scotty and Darren Palmer! They then proceeded to tell us to go home and pack our bags as we were on The Block!”

To say they were shocked would be an understatement. “We were both hesitant as we both doubt ourselves and our own abilities, but poor Luke had also booked a trip to Europe. It was all paid for and he would be leaving right in the middle of filming. There was definitely a moment of hesitation, but we both realised that this was an opportunity of a lifetime and we felt so grateful that we could not pass up the opportunity,” Ebony said.

block

Apart from some close friends and family, nobody else was allowed to know, with Ebony telling her other friends and colleagues that she had been offered an internship in Melbourne for three to four months! “They were so excited and I felt so terrible I couldn’t share the truth! But now that it’s out they are so thrilled and completely understand why I had to bend the truth a little.”

Despite the easy assumptions, Ebony says her and her brother aren’t really at much of advantage at all, having not even made it onto the Block ‘proper’ last series. “We’ve done a week of the show whereas the others haven’t and we knew a few crew members and had a taste of the camera and the pressure you’re under. But we also have never been on The Block – we were in an apartment complex for one week. The actual Block site and the running of the site are very different. But I understand the question of having an advantage; I would be thinking the same thing if I was a contestant and they brought someone else back. But as you’ll see, first or second time around makes no difference – you can still make huge mistakes either way!”

Humble Ebony also can’t help feeling a little guilty to get another shot at the experience when so many apply every year and miss out. “I’ve read comment after comment in the past of viewers being annoyed that others have had two opportunities to have a go. I do completely understand if people feel that way. Luke and I honestly believed that we had had our chance last time and we were not good enough to be involved. We had put it down to a great experience and had moved on. That’s why it was such a genuine surprise to be asked back and there was no way we could have said no to the opportunity. It’s something that people will either have a problem with or they won’t. Ultimately it was an unexpected delight to be asked back and we’re extremely grateful.”

Luke and Ebony
Luke and Ebony

If Ebony has any regrets it’s not backing herself enough. “Viewers will be very surprised with our apartment and choices we make – it comes down to my lack of confidence in my own ability. Luke was great and constantly boosted me up, but in hindsight I did make a lot of mistakes; not trusting my gut and doing my natural style from the beginning is the biggest mistake I made.”

That said, now the apartment is finished, they love it: “It took some time getting there, there are changes that we made along the way. But ultimately, we love our apartment and hopefully the buyers will too!”

Something viewers often grumble about is too much bitching and drama and not enough design but Ebony says we can expect a great sense of teamwork amongst the contestants this time. “Yes, we are all very different and there is still frustration, conflict and disagreement, but generally I believe we all got on extremely well and helped each other a lot. There are hours upon hours of footage which has to get cut down to a 45-minute episode. I hope that viewers see the many, many laughs we all had together. Each contestant is brilliantly hilarious and completely insane in their own way – it’s fabulous!”

But working on a building site for 12 weeks, alongside eight strangers and a crew you’re getting to know with very little sleep, there is always going to be drama. “This show is about capturing the moments as they unfold, and that means capturing the drama. If the show censored the drama and focused solely on the design, viewers wouldn’t be seeing the experience for what it really is; plus that’s not reality. I think this series will show a good balance of design and drama. Let’s not forget a lot of the drama comes from the design sometimes!”

Working on The Block was the hardest, most gruelling and challenging thing Ebony’s ever done but she also calls but it the most rewarding, hilarious and craziest thing she’s done. “I hope they show all the tears, the tantrums and the laughs, because then viewers can see what an emotional rollercoaster The Block really is. It’s not all laughs and fun, but it’s not all doom and gloom either – like I said, total rollercoaster!”

Having grown up in a close family, Ebony and Luke have been taught to trust one another and be open about things. “To be honest, I was shocked that Luke and I got along so well last time but I figured it was just because we had only spent a week together! After hearing that we were back on, I was worried about how we’d go. But in all seriousness, I am so proud of how we worked as a team. We had each other’s back from day one. We had arguments and disagreements, but it never lasted long and we never screamed at each other.”

The series has now finished filming, but open for inspection day and of course, the the auctions, are still looming. Ebony’s keeping her future options open but is definitely set on a design career and more study. “I thought I had a lot to learn before, now I know I have a lot to learn! But it’s exciting. Last time the show was right as I finished my brief study, this time it feels like the prequel to furthering my study and starting my career. I have a few different options at the moment, but I just need to seek advice as to what’s the best option for me, whether it is studying in Melbourne, studying overseas, taking some time to travel or perhaps another opportunity will arise. All I know at the moment is I don’t really want to see stairs, paintbrushes or ready-made dinners for quite some time!”

The Block starts with bathroom week on Sunday night at 7pm on Nine.

Perth’s Dessein pop-up and breakfast seminars

We often hear from our Perth readers that they’re feeling a bit neglected, what with Sydney and Melbourne hosting the majority of design’s coolest events. So when we hear of something happening on the west coast of Australia, we’re quick to report it!

ArthurG_DesseinPopUp_212

Taking place in Arthur G’s Perth showroom, they will be offering a unique concept store experience, showcasing the work of fellow Australian furniture designer and rising star, Dessein.

Part installation, part merchandising display, the Dessein concept store appears as a chromatic lighting installation from afar, inviting customers to step in and experience the Dessein signature style in a unique and inspiring way.

Interview: Ebony and Luke on life after The Block elimination

I don’t think we were the only ones who fell for The Block’s first brother and sister duo Ebony and Luke with their down to earth attitude, sense of fun and that brave pink wall choice. So it was a shame to see them eliminated last week after a bathroom nightmare. But Ebony Haythornthwaite, who happens to be an Interiors Addict fan, says she doesn’t regret a thing.

Luke and Ebony
Luke and Ebony

Like thousands of others, Ebony and big brother Luke had always watched The Block and wondered if they could do it. This was before Luke was a qualified carpenter and long before Ebony had made a decision to study interior design. “Two years ago, after continuous encouragement from friends and family, we applied,” says Ebony. “We got to the interview process, but sadly, we missed out. So we tried again in 2014 and we were successful!”

Although the bathroom, for which they got eliminated, was a bit of a disaster from start to finish, Ebony says she doesn’t regret going on the show. “You brush that off because it’s about the experience, not just the result. And the experience was phenomenal. I don’t think anyone can fully understand unless they’ve been in the same situation. The Block is obviously physically exhausting; however it is more of a mental challenge than anything else. Getting your head around the constant cameras, the lack of food and sleep, plus the pressure of room reveals and looming deadlines; it is all pretty intense. I wish that the audience got to see all of the laughs and jokes which went on with the teams. We honestly all got on so well.”

The pair’s second room, the living/dining, was well received by the judges and viewers, despite the somewhat controversial peachy-pink wall colour choice. “I am so proud of what Luke and I achieved,” Ebony says. “We knew that everyone would either love it or hate it, but we took the risk. Plus, it gave us a chance for the judges to see our style.”

ELIM 2_EP04_LIVINGDINING_LE_05 copy
The pair’s popular living/dining room

Their bathroom however: not so good! “Unfortunately there are times when nothing goes according to plan; this was one of those times! Luke and I struggled to nail down our trades at the beginning, then we had difficulties with our products being delivered and we had to change pivotal fittings due to restrictions that we weren’t aware of. But more importantly, in the wee hours of the morning of reveal, we realised that we had been supplied with incorrect products. But the only way to deal with it was to see what we could purchase quickly and try to at least finish. This meant buying a cheap vanity unit from Mitre 10. Let’s just say it didn’t quite go with the large tap I had purchased for the original vanity.”

ELIM 3_EP07_BATHROOM_LE_04 copy
THAT tap and vanity combo!

[contextly_sidebar id=”Ec8teCdm0f0gKWvt511mu96erKGKmTMP”]Ebony describes the other contestants as hilarious and genuine which bodes well for the rest of the series. They certainly don’t seen a particularly bitchy crowd but who knows what will happen this week when more people are thrown into the mix! “They enjoy a laugh and more importantly, all have the ability to laugh at themselves,” Ebony said. “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting them.” The only judge she got to meet was Neale Whitaker, and not under ideal circumstances. “It was prior to the living and dining room judging. I was taking the only two minutes spare you get on The Block and brushing my teeth. Unfortunately, it was behind a sofa in the parking lot. Neale saw me and thought it was hilarious. I was mortified! Neale Whitaker had just seen me brushing my teeth behind a dirty old sofa!”

Yet if the opportunity came up, Ebony would be involved in The Block again. “Now I know a little more about the mental strength it takes to deal with the pressure, but it would still definitely be challenging.” As fleeting as their 15 minutes of fame was, Ebony is pleased it highlighted hers and Luke’s skills in a positive light. He’s gone back to his job as a carpenter for Landscapes WA in Perth and since being on the show, she’s moved from her hometown of Busselton to the WA capital and started working for herself (you can find her business on Facebook).

“I am really proud that we were the first brother/sister duo to be on The Block. I think it brought a totally different dynamic to the show. Experiencing this with Luke was really great. He’s my big brother who I’ve always looked up to since we were little. I guess I knew that if I went on the show with him, I’d be pushing myself every day. My biggest fear would be letting Luke down.”

Naw, bless! We wish Luke and Ebony every future success.

Block’s Matt & Kim to the rescue on Domestic Blitz tomorrow

Remember Matt and Kim from The Block Sky High? If you were fans, you can check them out tomorrow night on Nine in Domestic Blitz – Matt and Kim to the Rescue.

MATT_KIM_EF_v6-3

The Napolis were just like any other hardworking Australian family. Rocco Snr is a self-employed tiler; his wife Ricki, a dedicated wife and mother. Along with their two children Rocco Jnr (10) and Melina (8) they’d built a modest and happy life in the Perth suburb of Belmont. Rocco was a sports mad West Coast Eagles and Perth Glory fan, with a zest for life and a big personality.

However a year ago, their lives changed dramatically.

Young Rocco was suddenly struck down by fatigue, headaches and irritability. When the family had Rocco examined by a specialist their worst fears were realised. Rocco had a rare type of brain tumour called craniopharyngioma: a benign tumour that develops on the pituitary gland.

Surgeons were able to remove the primary tumour however, in the process, they also had to remove his pituitary gland. This would have shocking consequences for Rocco and his family. Due to the absence of Rocco’s pituitary gland and the malfunction of his hypothalamus, Rocco has been struck down by debilitating fatigue, irritability and excessive, uncontrollable weight gain.

Their already rundown residence in Belmont, Perth, became more dilapidated as the family struggled to make ends meet and endured endless trips to hospitals for treatment. With Rocco being so quick to fatigue, the family spend the great majority of their time at home, so their living environment is crucial to their state of mind.

This family desperately needed a ray of sunshine to change their fortunes and provide much-needed hope and relief.

Matt and Kim and an army of tradespeople surprise the Napoli family with a seemingly unachievable sized renovation over just three action-packed days. Emotions ran high and the results were groundbreaking.

Expect tears. Expect laughter. Expect drama. Expect a life-changing event.

Domestic Blitz – Matt and Kim to the Rescue, Sunday 14 December 2014, 7pm Australia wide, on Nine. For more information.

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Kim Pearson

It took interior designer and stylist Kim Pearson almost 20 years to find the perfect coffee table and when she did, she bought two!

AGCl7FeDCek5HlOoTtw8AcffRnyS0QEF4Xd6zKrJDmA,yBDvBCAmfRauGzB6EhO9Oowj4M799LP4Yr7OoGSH41U,AIY4Cq8zd0UHIU5JIw4tC7PV7uh_7vkfpPSNBKIiMB8

“We’re floor dwellers so we invested in rugs and vast floor cushions instead, with children and dogs crawling/sprawled around and over us! I stumbled (actually kind of really did fall over) upon these tables in a sale a few years ago, reduced from literally thousands to hundreds. Worth a 20 year wait! American, made of polished nickel, solid walnut and glass, they are heavy and polished and refined and robust all at the same time in a classic tray table style. Timber shelf below and nickel framed heavy, clear glass above. Low too, which I like. One wasn’t enough though as I like a coffee table to be generous so I bought two rectangles, pushed them together and voila, one big square one!”

Screen Shot 2014-09-04 at 10.01.01 am

It’s nestled in front of the fire and surrounded by squishy velvet, feather-filled sofas and old Victorian armchairs. (Yes, I want to live there too!) “It’s covered in piles and piles of books and mags — British Vogue, World of Interiors, Vogue Living, Vanity Fair,” says WA-based Kim. “There are masses of coffee table books; a delicious vice of mine. I’m a sucker for a great cover and I sometimes buy them just for that and enjoy swapping them around according to size, colour and topic.”

The roses are from her garden. “I keep the flowers low using old silver, glass and ceramic bowls. Candles too, Ciré Trudon — Ernesto and Roi Soleil — being my all time favourites. And what’s missing is the Smarties. Because I ate them !”

Inspiring workspace tour with interior designer Kim Pearson

Today, we have a real treat of a workspace tour for you! This divine space belongs to WA interior designer and stylist Kim Pearson who just oversaw a beautiful revamp of her new space in the heart of Perth’s design hub, Chelsea Village in Nedlands. Come inside…

Image 1

Kim approached her own studio with the same meticulous attention to detail reserved for her clients’ projects. “I used a combination of existing and new pieces — a 19th Century French sofa re-covered in floral linen, a Victorian English armchair recovered in a beautiful autumnal watercoloured Italian cotton, a new custom feather-filled sofa upholstered in vintage teal velvet designed by me, and an oval extendable pedestal table purchased for $50 (yes!) on Gumtree that I had sprayed satin white for client meetings.”

Image 2

Image 4

There’s also classic French cafe chairs, an old fireplace she found, painted white and filled with blackboard in place of the fire, custom pine trestle tables and Ikea shelving. “I also collected lots of beautiful, precious and not-so-precious vintage and antique china for tea, coffee, cake and client lunch meetings.” Don’t you just wish you were one of Kim’s clients?!

Image 5

Local printmaker Magali Dincher, of Beau est Mien in William Street, Northbridge, was commissioned to paint the florals on the front and back windows. “I wanted the studio wrapped front and back with flowers for winter — why not!? — as a celebration of beauty and joy. Goodness knows we need it with all that’s going on in the world. I thought it would be fun and make me, and others I hope, happy.”

Image 6

This space is not your average studio/office/showroom. In fact, Kim calls it a multi-passionate, multi-disciplinary, multi-directional design service for interiors! “We are a truly bespoke boutique practice and bring each and every client and project the finest attention to detail and results — beautiful, exciting, original and functional,” she adds. “We’ve recently completed some fabulous and diverse projects from the first ferry re-launch of the iconic Rottnest Express ferry fleet, to a Fremantle harbourside cafe and grill housed in an original cargo shed, to a series of beautiful family Perth homes, character and new.”

Image 7

Established in 2002, Kim Pearson Design’s new 2014 home is conveniently within easy reach of some the finest fabric agencies and designers in the state. Open by appointment “or by chance,” prospective customers are always welcome to pop in for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee (and cake!).

Cranmore Home: bringing beautiful homewares to regional WA

When your nearest neighbour is a few kilometres away and the only shop in a respectable distance sells groceries, for those who value interiors and homewares, living in rural Australia can easily become the kiss of death.

ULuc2qgQU2kFbuzXWrAPO79uJ7VbClZS7sE7fVG2Qyo
Tracy Lefroy

But for Tracy Lefroy, being based on a farm in regional Western Australia inspired her to bring beautiful homewares to the people of her hometown, by creating her store, Cranmore Home. Offering its wares online, in a permanent showroom in Moora and via pop-up retail events throughout WA, Cranmore Home stocks a combination of Australia’s tried and tested favourite brands, alongside emerging Australian artisans.

UIxWkLUMmvmvQIeA1mNuXZ5HzQG3C-Ft4lraBSxeJK0
Cranmore Home’s permanent showroom in Moora

“Living in regional WA means that I am not influenced by what is being shown in other shops, simply because there are no other shops near me,” explains Tracy. “I have a very strong idea of the aesthetic I am creating at Cranmore Home so I know pretty quickly if an artisan is going to fit with that. This is not an aesthetic with an eye on emerging trends, but one which values longevity over fads.”

With her permanent showroom in her regional hometown of Moora, Tracy is not content in serving just that area’s residents, hence the pop-up events taking her across the state to a very receptive audience.

uYFAljGU4Xsc_kTFEkKjg1lZcPaxPEnZfkDHnVQBJzs,PrmschcJk3s-LREck3TRgwc1aBecn-C4wSXx6LWagbU,PbdyXqlVFFp67cKRgVFcQwfwBkfCIr1g61Z02xsGjDI

“I just love the pop-up retail events in regional WA,” says Tracy. “It is such a treat to bring amazing Australian-designed homewares to an audience that is not normally able to access these brands in their own region. We have also had access to some amazing venues, such as Beermullah Shearing Shed, where we converted this beautifully renovated shed into a styled venue, such as I have never seen before.”

Working where she does has the obvious challenge of being geographically removed from the artisans whose work she sells. But Tracy believes this separation also sees her removed from others’ influences, allowing her to stay true to her own values. Her latest big idea is her inaugural Winter Workshop. Being held on 28 June at the farm where she lives, Cranmore Park, the event will bring the people behind the brands at Cranmore Home to WA to share their skills.

“The Winter Workshop will provide the opportunity to attend intimate workshops of just 15 participants with some of Australia’s most talented artisans,” explains Tracy. “The day will be divided into two sessions, with a long table lunch of local, seasonal food and paired wines. The Workshops have been tailored to suit anyone from a novice to a well-skilled artist.”

Tracy’s farm home, historic Cranmore Park

The Workshop will be made that much more special by being based in Tracy’s historic farmhouse home, where she lives with her husband Kristin and their three children. Currently halfway through a ten-year renovation plan, the process of designing and styling her house is what inspired Tracy to start her own shop in the first place.

“My own aesthetic is one and the same as Cranmore Home,” says Tracy. “Living in and renovating an old home has given me such an appreciation for the longevity of great design. It was when we moved into our home that I really honed my love of design and became focused on only filling my home (and so my shop) with Australian-designed products that I truly loved.”

With a busy schedule of pop-ups and workshops as well as monitoring both her physical and online shop, Tracy is in no way slowing down. But that’s exactly how she likes it.

Postcard from Perth: a guide to homewares shopping in WA

By Kim Pearson

Over here in the wild wild west, we WAussies are known for our enthusiasm for doing things our way. And so it is with our music, fashion, art, design … and shopping. Over the past few years, a growing band of independent creatives and lovers of beauty and innovation have established some seriously good little — and big — shops as purveyors of the unique, bespoke, handmade and directional in all things interiors. Yeeehah!

Here are a few of my local favourites (shhh don’t tell anyone)…

MOBILIA

1/248 Stirling Highway, Claremont, 6010, Perth, Western Australia www.mobilia.com.au t: 08 9284 5599
