Learn from textile queen Chrissie Jeffrey at the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair this week

For those who can’t get enough of DIY, Chrissie Jeffrey from No Chintz is the person to talk to. A fabric designer and craft guru, she has spent 30 years in the business, and thanks to this week’s Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair, you get the chance to learn from the woman herself!

“I will be showing how anyone from novices to creative geniuses can turn humdrum living spaces into incredible rooms using DIY interiors, creative patchwork, curtains and wallpaper ideas,” explains Chrissie. She’ll also be hosting daily, 50-minute ‘Make & Take’ workshops, where you can create your own lampshade using a pre-made kit and your own fabrics or a choice of 10.

Chrissie has created homewares and furniture for designers and architects for many decades, through her store, No Chintz Textiles and Soft Furnishings. Giving people retail access to well-designed fabrics off the roll as opposed to having to order them in through designers, No Chintz makes getting crafty a whole lot easier. They also offer goods to order, manufacturing anything from lampshades through to bed quilts, curtains and blinds.

However, one of the things Chrissie and her team are most known for is their new spin on patchwork, something that you will get the chance to hear more about at the fair. “We have been experimenting with patchwork on furniture since Vogue asked us to do a patchwork chair, curtains and tablecloth for them in 2007,” says Chrissie. “We love to piece together uneven, large pieces of assorted patterns. We have put together a kit for creating a blue/green quilt or a pink/cream quilt for the craft fair and online.”

While Chrissie admits she sees far more bad DIY interiors than good ones, she believes that through her workshops even novices will be able to create something beautiful. “Visitors will learn how to make something well through the step-by-step processes that we use in manufacturing ourselves,” explains Chrissie. “These are simple projects that even inexperienced sewers and decorators can easily master, are cost-effective, visually interesting and can totally transform any room.”

Chrissie’s lampshade classes, Handmade Room display and wallpaper demonstrations will be amongst a host of other Make and Take classes and displays at the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair this week.

From Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 July, Sydney Exhibition Centre. Buy tickets here.

How to successfully add a touch of country to your modern home

By Angela Lavender

I love nothing more than discovering homegrown designer goods in the most unexpected and hidden places. All over the country, artisans are making things by hand, finding inspiration in the beauty that surrounds them in regional Australia.

But the big question is, how do we go about balancing these unique, more relaxed pieces of furniture and homewares with the features and designs of our contemporary homes?

Transform Ikea & vintage furniture with affordable decor product, now available here.

Today I’m really  excited to tell you about a décor product that will help you transform affordable or secondhand furniture into something truly fabulous, unique and expensive looking. And it’s just been brought to Australia.

These lightweight, decorative fretwork panels come in several patterns and sizes. They are paintable and easily attach to furniture, mirrors, walls and glass.  I’ve seen O’verlays on American blogs for years and thought they were amazing but could never find someone to deliver them to Australia. Luckily for me, Sydney-based Therese Tarlinton has now brought them here. At about $20 per panel, I think they’re going to be ridiculously popular!

Go shopping the handmade markets online

This week I’m loving the Handmade Markets initiative from Temple & Webster with the help of the fabulous Jacqui Fink from Little Dandelion. She makes the gorgeous jumbo knits like this beautiful bed runner, which has unfortunately already been snapped up!

Jacqui introduced Temple & Webster to 10 of Australia’s most talented handmade designers to give them an online platform to showcase and sell their wares. It was launched at the weekend and runs until Monday 24 June. “Each maker has been working furiously but joyously over the last few weeks, preparing for this sale event. I trust you will love the product offering,” Jacqui says.

Hand carved hide cushions by handbag designer Michaela Menichelli

I love Melbourne accessories designer Michaela Menichelli’s beautiful bags and bought one of her clutches last year. I’m so excited that she’s just launched into homewares with a cushion range.

M Menichelli press shot

What’s more they’re produced ethically in Bali, supporting local craftspeople who carve each piece by hand (hard to believe isn’t it?) so no two are exactly the same. Michaela is keen to challenge the popularity of cheap, mass produced accessories and offer something different, hand crafted and fashion forward. They really are fashion for your home. My name’s on a white one!

WIN Kirstie’s Vintage Home DVD and book set

I’m a huge fan of Kirstie and Phil’s Location, Location (I grew up on the stuff in the UK, where it was HUGE), so I was keen to check out Kirstie Allsopp’s latest show, Kirstie’s Vintage Home.

Kirstie's_Vintage_Home_DVD

Following on from the success of Kirstie’s Handmade Showdown, the queen of craft (and real estate) takes on hopeless homemakers and turns them into handmade heroes. She shows them how, with a little bit of vintage inspiration, their own fair hands and that little bit of extra homemade magic, they can transform their houses from shabby to chic. In today’s disposable culture of cheap furniture and trying to keep up with the latest trends, it’s a really nice message. And I think the idea of mixing vintage finds with newer pieces in your home, as well as getting back to basics with old-fashioned crafts, is alive and kicking in Australia.

West Elm stocks Aussie Etsy sellers in Bondi store

One of the coolest things West Elm has been doing in the States for years, is supporting and selling the work of Etsy makers and sellers. And they’ve brought that to Australia, already stocking local Etsy sellers in the new Bondi Junction store.

Not many mega brands would give indie crafters and artists shelf space in their stores and I think it’s awesome! Read more about West Elm’s first Aussie Etsy partners here or visit the store.

I ‘m so not missing this so I’ll be there on the Sunday. If you see me, say hi!

There’s all sorts of cool stuff happening at The School this weekend on account of it being its first birthday. From 10am to 4pm on both days, go along for a visit, a free pavlova party and a free kids craft class. Find out more at The School’s website.
