A family home designed for entertaining

Today I’m delighted to share with you this recently completely project by Point 2 Design with bright, open plan living and plenty of marble. Almost 2 years in the making, interior designers Sarah Gavan and Jessica Enander were involved in the planning of this waterfront property in Sydney’s Inner West from day one.

The neutral palette, open plan living and stunning views make this an exceptional family home that ticks all the boxes,” says Point 2’s Sarah Gavan. “We were engaged by the client when they first met with the architect to develop the plans for their new family home. The property is positioned on the waterfront at Rodd Point. The family love to entertain and the house was to be designed to allow for entertaining.”

Industry celebrates at last night’s Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in Sydney

Hecker Guthrie and the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne picked up the big prizes at the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in Sydney last night. The Seymour Centre was packed with the best names in the industry, sharing in each other’s success at the event, hosted by Inside magazine.

Hecker Guthrie’s Park Street residence, winner of the residential decoration category

In picking up the Gold Medal, Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie of Hecker Guthrie (who also picked up the residential decoration category) gave heartfelt speeches about their passion for the job, the fun they have at work, their respect for each other and how people shouldn’t think of “decoration” as a dirty word.

Facet Studio picked up both the emerging designer and international project categories and clearly weren’t expecting either, struggling to find the words as they took to the stage, overwhelmed and flattered at the recognition from their peers.

Brisbane’s Stokehouse restaurant by Arkhefield, joint winner of the hospitality category

The judges had a difficult job, with a highly commended award also given in several categories, sometimes even two!

I’m loving: Kelly Wearstler’s My Vibe My Life

Interior, and more recently fashion designer Kelly Wearstler is so cool that if I ever met her I think I would be a starstruck mess. She’s also super talented and a great sharer and her blog My Vibe My Life is one of my favourites.

In it you’ll find plenty of photos of her work, her vintage finds, street art and plenty of colour. It’s inspiration central. And there are also plenty of gratuitous photos of Kelly looking fabulous in killer heels and wonderful clothes. So for a serious dose of cool, you know where to go…

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her new book Rhapsody either!

I’m a little bit in love with this Lisbon apartment

I had the pleasure of interviewing the Portugese interior designer behind this beautiful apartment for the latest issue of Adore Home magazine and I just want to move right in. At first glance it looks like there’s crazy colour and pattern everywhere but on closer inspection it is all very cleverly put together so nothing is overdone.

Read more about Maria Barros’ use of rugs, pattern and colour in this three-bedroom family home in the latest issue of Adore Home, out now.

David Hicks’ rug range with Cadrys

After years of custom designing for projects, it made sense for interior designer David Hicks to team up with Cadrys to design his own rug range.

Although they may not be officially launched until after Christmas, they’re already available and word is getting around, both here and in LA, where David’s practice has a studio. The ‘Sun’ design is already being showcased at Erin V Maison in West Hollywood.

The inspiration for the rug designs has come from my love of vintage combined with luxury materials,” says David.

Room talk: masculine, monochrome Port Melbourne apartment

This project by designer Aaron Wong of Alexander Pollock, was for a young working professional who recently bought his first home in Port Melbourne. He was after a masculine and monochrome palette to suit his no fuss lifestyle.

“A very modern concept was chosen,” says Aaron. “My favourite part of the space was the installation of tinted mirrors to reflect the three tubular pendant lights for a visual effect.”

Vogue apartment in South Yarra by Christopher Elliott Design

Christopher Elliott’s Vogue project involved the complete fit-out of a newly built apartment purchased off the plan, in Melbourne’s South Yarra. Christopher was commissioned by a client living in the country and given carte blanche to create the perfect city retreat.

“The apartment is small and compact, so the challenge was to create a sense of space and enhance the lofty atmosphere provided by the spectacular views of Melbourne,” says Christopher. “Thankfully the client had the insight to involve me from the beginning, before the 30-storey apartment tower even commenced construction.” He was able to consult with the builders, requesting the ceilings to be uniform throughout (normally bulkheads would be constructed to minimise joinery costs).

This simple alteration, together with most of the joinery and furniture being suspended off the floor, offers the illusion of space. Another design technique used to enhance the space was the installation of a ‘French Grey’ American Oak flooring throughout the entire apartment, creating a seamless look.

Exclusive: Greg Natale meets Kelly Wearstler

What an interior designer dream! One of my favourite Australian designers Greg Natale, has just returned from a trip to LA where he met the legendary Kelly Wearstler, who I just happen to think is the coolest woman EVER.

It was a dream come true for Greg, who is a huge fan. He has been doing business with Kelly’s Melrose store for years and was keen to finally meet her in person. “She is beautiful, tiny and sweet,” he said. “She was exactly how I expected. Casual, cool, approachable and down to earth.”

Designer brings antique collection up to date in stylish Richmond home

A collection of beautiful yet dominating antique furniture was working against this Melbourne home. Interior designer Christopher Elliott was called in to create a more stylish and modern space, successfully blending old and new.

They had some gorgeous pieces to work with but there were too many of them,” says Christopher, who prides himself on being able to harmonise eras, styles, materials and colours to create unique liveable spaces. “Most of their collection consisted of antique timber pieces that although beautifully crafted, all together were too sombre and unwelcoming.”

Space was tight in the main room, which needed to fit both a sitting and dining space. He was keen to highlight the picturesque view onto a sundrenched private courtyard, so began by paring back the antique collection to a few key pieces that would accommodate the new look. A new paint scheme brought warmth to the space and grass cloth wallpaper added texture.

“The fireplace was remodeled by covering over the exposed brick with a beautiful polished plaster finish and painting the internal out black,” he adds. “I designed some discrete joinery either side of the fireplace to accommodate a TV and additional storage. A fabulous new rug, which occupies most of the space, was very important because I didn’t want to see separation between the dining and living space, otherwise it would appear restrictive.”

The rug’s large scale design gives the illusion of space and some much needed impact. A modern classic sofa covered in a durable linen/cotton fabric, paired with some existing armchairs that were reupholstered, creates a comfortable living space. Christopher, who was once responsible for introducing Hermon & Hermon’s interior design service, wanted to bring in fabric as much as possible to offset the hard finishes of the antique furniture. This led to upholstered dining chairs using a linen fabric with a metallic geometric print to modernise the look.

Christopher designed the modern octagonal ottoman in a sumptuous polished leather which can be used as either a footrest, coffee table or additional seating. Classic modern table and floor lights create a bridge between the old and new.

The study space is semi open onto a hallway and needed to be anchored. Christopher designed some very functional joinery to give the client storage and a place to display all their books and objects. A beautiful antique armchair was reupholstered in a Ralph Lauren floral print fabric.

“Playing on the layering of prints and bold design I used a geometric grass cloth wallpaper to give a contemporary flair to the space and a fluid rug design to balance it,” he says. “The floor lamp is a graphic element that visually pops against the wallpaper and highlights the fabric of the armchair. All this combined with a very contemporary coffee table made of smoked glass, chrome and marble, which adds a sense of luxury to the space.”

I absolutely love this home and the clever way the look has been pulled together. What do you think?

Christopher has had his own practice, Christopher Elliott Design, since 2005. See more of his work on his website.

David Hicks says there’s no right or wrong in design, own what you like and be the best at it

Melbourne interior designer David Hicks is living the dream right now. Last month alone he opened an LA office and was a finalist in the Belle | Coco Republic Interior Design Awards.

Incorporating beautiful vintage pieces has always been a feature of Hicks’ work and while importing many of these from the States, one thing led to another and the company now has a permanent base there. “For the past five years our office has had a love affair with vintage furniture,” says Hicks. “We incorporate select collector quality pieces in most of our work. Due to our relationships with suppliers in the US we decided to have a member of staff on the ground there to help with sourcing. From that came a couple of projects and now an office!” It was officially launched during the Legends of the La Cienega design event which they took part in.

David, who has already been to LA twice this year, has an architect over there managing projects so the logistics are surprisingly easy and the international exposure has been fantastic. “We are suddenly seen as an international design company and are receiving some amazing job enquiries that we would probably not get if we were just based in Australia.”

Stacey Kouros: From Greg Natale’s protégé to respected interior designer in her own right

Stacey Kouros says it’s a huge compliment to be described as Greg Natale’s protégé. But despite this great start and exposure on reality TV show homeMADE, this young designer has really gone on to carve out her own style and prove her talent, running her own design practice.

I worked for Greg for more than five years and it was such an incredible experience,” she says. “I started working with him when his business was fairly fresh, so I really got to grow with him. Seeing him go from an emerging designer to one of Australia’s best and being a part of that was invaluable. When I started with Greg I was in my last few months of uni (she studied Interior Architecture at UNSW) so I was pretty green. Having him as a mentor and friend really shaped who I am as a designer and just as importantly, taught me key lessons in running a small business.”
