Tween girl bedroom makeover by Cherie Barber for $500

The transition from tween to teenage years heralds a significant and often expensive personal style overhaul. During this time of rapid personality growth, how your teen styles their bedroom is just as important in expressing their newfound tastes as the clothes they wear.

AFTER

With a combination of creativity, clever ideas and White Knight’s craft and decorative paint range, White Knight DIY and Renovation Expert Cherie Barber shows that it is possible to restyle your tween’s bedroom into an ideal teen space in less than a day, and all for under $500.

To transform 11-year-old Ava’s pastel coloured room into a modern, tropical themed paradise fit for any teen, Cherie recommends upcycling as much furniture as possible, explaining that “the regeneration of old with new is the key to the creative vision of an eclectic and practical room.”

AFTER

Here Cherie explains her step-by-step makeover process to achieve the ultimate tween to teen makeover;

1. From single to double

Kicking off the bedroom overhaul was the all-important move from a single to a double bed. After finding an old metal bed frame at a local garage sale, Cherie used White Knight’s multi-benefit spray paint Squirts in Gloss Fuschia to inject some colour. As a two-in-one primer and paint, Squirts is easy to apply and bonds well to a multitude of surfaces including metal, wood, plastics and ceramics making it an ideal for both interior and exterior use. With over 40 colours available, the quick-drying formula is touch dry in 10 minutes, meaning Cherie was able to move on to her next project in no time at all.

2. Adding the tropical wow factor

To add excitement to the room and bring in the tropical theme to the top of Ava’s existing study desk, Cherie used White Knight Squirts in Lemon Yellow. When applying, Cherie suggests holding the can about 20 cm from the desktop surface and using a sweeping motion to ensure an even finish from several light coats. This way, you’ll achieve a beautiful, bright desk that makes studying so much more fun!

As an easy way to transform  Ava’s wardrobe doors, Cherie used White Knight Strokes to create a flamingo shape using stencils printed from a website. Cherie says: “I’ve chosen the White Knight Strokes for this feature as it’s a high gloss paint that is touch dry and ready for a second coat in 4-to-6 hours. White Knight Strokes is also an oil-based enamel, making it super hard-wearing for those areas which often take some wear and tear, and the pretty pink tone is ideal to further integrate the tropical theme.”

Using White Knight Squirts again, Cherie recoated Ava’s current chair to give it a new lease of life. Bringing in the tropical yellow tone, Cherie easily converted what was a once a tired looking piece of furniture, to a refreshed one which makes a cool addition to Ava’s relaxation area.

3. Get scribing on your personal message board

To help with the busy schooling and social lives that teenagers lead, they need somewhere to scribble notes. White Knight’s Chalkboard paint provides a hard-wearing finish that transforms surfaces into a fun and functional chalkboard. To do this, Cherie picked up a piece of melamine from a local hardware store and painted it with a coat of White Knight’s Chalkboard paint in Black, creating the ideal message board and perfect solution for this teen room.

BEFORE Ava’s room was pretty in aqua but she wanted something more grown up

4. Bringing the room together – the final touch

By using the pieces that are already owned, Cherie managed to stick to the budget yet create a completely new space fit for any teenager. With the help of White Knight’s Craft and Decorative range, Cherie has upcycled many of Ava’s tween fixtures and brought life to inexpensive furniture. With the addition of a range of tropical- themed décor such as bedsheets, wall pictures and the all-important pineapple cushion, Cherie’s stylish and affordable bedroom upgrade is complete for under $500.

White Knight paints are available from Taubmans Professional Trade Centres and Bunnings nationally.

How to: give an old Ikea favourite a new look with spray paint

Let me just say first up, I love IKEA. I really do. They seem to always have a solution at an affordable price. Although sometimes the finishes aren’t always ideal, the great thing about Ikea is that everything comes apart so simply it’s so easy to hack it into something a bit more custom. So thanks to some spray paint from Rust Oleum, that’s exactly what I did.

image

I picked up an old ENETRI shelving unit off Gumtree for $30 (bargain, right?!). It’s honestly such a versatile piece and everyone always comments on it, wanting to know where they can get their hands on one. Unfortunately IKEA no longer sell them but there always seems to be one out there on Gumtree.

Step One: Pick up supplies

  • 1x can of Rust Oleum spray paint (in Pure Gold)
  • Drop sheets
  • Cardboard
  • Gloves

image

Step Two: Set up a spray zone

Always put a drop sheet down first to protect your flooring, I always then put a layer of cardboard on top to spray on as I learnt the hard way that EVERYTHING sticks to drop sheets including whatever you’re spraying. Ha!

Step Three: Spray away

The beauty of the RustOleum spray paint is that is that it is a primer and paint in one go so it saves a lot of time and mucking around! I always recommend doing two coats to make sure you haven’t missed any spots and ideally leave it overnight to dry.

Say goodbye to old fashioned brushes and rollers with WAGNER’s latest paint sprayer

Ever since I saw contestants on The Block finish rooms in minutes thanks to a handy paint sprayer, I’ve wondered why anyone would pain themselves by using a paint brush or roller!

Screen Shot 2015-09-22 at 6.31.23 am 1

The newest addition to the WAGNER FLEXiO range of indoor/outdoor paint sprayers, the FLEXiO 990 Direct Feed, is one such product that will have your job done before you even know it. Ideal for large painting projects, it features a direct feed system for non-stop painting by drawing paint directly from the paint can, making it possible to finish painting projects much faster.

Flexio 990With the revolutionary i-Spray nozzle technology, everything from interior wall paints to varnishes and lacquers can be sprayed undiluted, delivering a perfect finish. You can also spray thick exterior acrylics onto coarser surfaces.

The nozzle can be adjusted to spray horizontal, vertical, narrow and wide patterns, and provides fast, even coverage with low overspray. Instead of applying two coats of paint with a brush or roller, paint fast with the FLEXiO 990 and spray the same amount of paint in much less than half the time.

For smaller projects the FLEXiO 990 can quickly be converted from a direct feed system to a handheld sprayer! It comes with a second standard spray attachment for spraying lacquer, varnish, stain and other thinner materials so you can achieve a perfect, smooth finish every time.

Screen Shot 2015-09-22 at 6.32.03 am

The FLEXiO 990 comes with the unique X-Boost turbine which makes it three times more powerful than other HVLP (high volume, low pressure) sprayers and allows it to spray most conventional coatings without being diluted. It also includes the practical Click & Paint feature, and comes with a second spray attachment and a flexible 7m long hose for two-storey reach.

The FLEXiO 990 is available now at major hardware and selected paint specialty stores. For more information.

Create your own unique upcyled furniture masterpiece

It’s an old and arguably tired adage, but the saying: ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ couldn’t be truer in the case of Feast Watson’s Re-Love Project. The initiative brought together eight designers who donated their time and expertise by ‘upcycling’ worn timber furniture items into unique, one-off designer pieces, all in the name of charity. For those new to upcycling, it involves turning used or useless furniture or other household items into something far more glamorous.

Simone Barter
Simone Barter

The project was an undeniable success, raising an admirable $5,000 for Salvos Stores Australia after Feast Watson agreed to match the funds raised from the eBay auction of the pieces earlier this month. James Fisher, brand manager at Feast Watson, notes that the success of the auction was a great reflection of both the strong support demonstrated by the public, and the delivery of such stunning products from the designers.

The project also shines some light on a craft form that, while popular, has yet to come into its own; with many seeing upcycling as a task best suited to smaller furniture pieces. Salvaging a larger item of furniture from the trash heap and showing it a little TLC, can in fact yield fantastic results and doesn’t require a lot of hard work.

According to Simone Barter (above), who fashioned a stylish chair and desk combination as part of Re-Love, it all starts with the search. And once you’ve purchased your piece, creating a masterpiece is as simple as planning, preparing and then achieving your vision.

Simone Barter before and after grouped image

Check out Simone’s step-by-step guide to achieving the look:

What you need:

  • Feast Watson Timber Primer
  • Feast Watson Stain & Varnish Black Japan Satin
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Malay Grey Semi Gloss

Planning:

Decide where the item will be placed in cohesion with the rest of the space and then choose a desk that will enable a large workspace. “Shop around and explore old and loved stores, you never know what you might find or what bargain you could stumble across!”

Preparation:

Prepare the wood by sanding it back, first with a coarse sand paper, followed by a finer one to smooth the timber. When selecting paint, “choose colours that will add a ‘wow’ factor – I chose Feast Watson Black Japan, Malay Grey and Pop of Tango from the Dulux range for a dramatic effect.”

Achieving your vision:

After applying the primer and allowing it to dry, remove all drawers and apply the first layer of stain and varnish, building up coats until the desired colour is achieved. For the chair, apply the Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss then allow to dry. When it comes time to paint, tape approximately 10cm from the bottom of each chair leg, evenly wrapped all the way around each leg. Then paint the bottom section of each chair leg. Remove the painters tape when the paint is completely dry.
