Just what characterises modern Australian interior style?

Australians have always tended toward a specific sort of cultural cringe across most aspects of our lives, and our interiors are no exception. Not content with looking locally for inspiration, Europe and America have long provided us with style cues but it’s something that is changing as the country matures and we cement our own unique Australian aesthetic.

“I think overall, Australians love an ‘uncontrived’ style — interiors that are relaxed, casual, forgiving and authentic, rather than formal and perfect. It’s one of the many things I love about this incredible country of ours!” says interior stylist Tess Beagley of Minted Interiors. Tess is also quick to stress that the casual nature of our interior spaces stems not only from our environment but the way we look at the world too. “Our interiors reflect our love of the outdoors, our hard working laid back attitudes, our light heartedness and our high regard for not taking ourselves too seriously.”

It’s something that Phoebe Bell of homewares brand Sage and Clare agrees with. “Australian style is laid back, unfussy and I think quite adventurous in many ways. We have a crisp light here, unlike anywhere else in the world, and a climate that lends itself to open indoor spaces. With these quintessentially Australian attributes, our interiors can carry colour, pattern and a certain playfulness that gives us our unique design aesthetic,” says Phoebe.

And there’s no doubt that the climate and natural environment feature strongly in the modern Australian design aesthetic. “As Australians, we take our design cues from our lifestyle, climate, outlook on life and our surrounding environments. This often translates into free flowing indoor/outdoor spaces flooded with natural light, high quality yet casual furniture and playful pops of colour. Australian art and decor usually speaks of our natural environments — the sea with bohemian trends, the land with natural materials like timber, linen, rattan and hemp — native botanical prints, as well as the resurgence of marble and indoor plants,” says Tess.

“We’re a young country, compared to most, so we’re not tied down by tradition like I see in other parts of the world. Our homes tend to be true reflections of the people within them and there’s a freedom of expression and openness to a certain level of quirkiness that is individual to Australia,” says Phoebe.

As for looking overseas for inspiration, both Tess and Phoebe admit it’s impossible not to but it’s a process that ultimately results in an original aesthetic regardless. “The world is such a big creative melting pot of inspiration and design ideas now that it’s hard not to be influenced by trends. I do think we put our own bent on things though and overseas trends are given the ‘Aussie treatment’ to bring them into line with our lifestyle and aesthetic here,” says Phoebe.

Interior voyeurs will love Megan Morton’s new book

Interior stylist Megan Morton releases her fourth book this week – a compendium of gorgeous homes titled ‘It’s beautiful here* – Homes That Make Your Heart Skip a Beat.’ From a modest rental in suburban Adelaide to a chateau in France and the New York apartment of author Hanya Yanagihara, the book’s subjects are a diverse lot which makes it an appealing read.

“I was humbled by the quote ‘some people buy beautiful houses, others make them’ and this book is about the people who make them!” says Megan of her motley crew of subjects, her favourites being mother daughter duo of Caroline and Virginia Gibbs. “We visited both the delicious homes of the mother and daughter decor duo, proving that the hospitality hostess gene is the best asset any house can have,” says Megan.

On the hospitality front, the book contains practical tips too. There’s advice on hosting, living with children, how to hang a gallery wall like a pro, balancing home and work, maximalism, how to live with books, colour tips and the final chapter that has the curious title ‘How to stay sane and outsmart cockroaches.’ You’ll also find interviews with the homeowners.

As a big fan of Yanagihara (I’m still haunted by ‘A Little Life’ – anyone else?), it was lovely to get a glimpse inside her New York apartment. Her impressive bookshelf spans the width of the room and holds over 12,000 tomes organised in alphabetical order! “She is my favourite writer. Her house was a total privilege to shoot but I was really there just to see her bookshelves!” says Megan.

“All the homes are done with total heart and you can detect it,” says Megan. Personally, I love getting inside the homes of ‘real’ people and if you’re an interiors voyeur like me, you’re bound to love it too.

Cosy comfort: Mr Jason Grant’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection

While the colour palette of steel blue and cool grey is beautifully tranquil, it’s the myriad textures that make Mr Jason Grant’s new collection his cosiest yet. Chunky blankets and throws, woven denim ottomans, oversized cushions and textural rugs abound. “I feel we have really captured the look and feel I want as a brand this season – something quintessentially Australian,” says Jason.

“At the core, MJG is about relaxed, honest, natural style. For me as a stylist, I think about how things will work in a home and also in an image as things need to be beautiful but practical. Everything needs to feel easy and not too complicated as we head into winter for a cosy feeling, but also taking into account the milder winters we have in Australia.”

As for his pick of the new collection, Jason cites the Cabin Stripe cushions and throws as some of his favourites. “I love the deep shades of grey and blue that were inspired by stormy oceans and they are made from cosy mohair with chunky tassels.”

“The collection has a focus on simple things that are additions to the home – I like everything to feel kind of timeless and not too disposable. I think of this range as a little bit of everyday luxury that can add style and comfort.” Part of the MJG launch collection, fans will be happy to find that they can still purchase the popular tan leather story too.

I’m coveting these knitted baskets and don’t think they’ll last long!

The collection was photographed in Jason’s beloved Byron Bay. “It’s paradise, my second home and my happy place. It has a creative buzz that I love and we have our retail outpost at Newrybar Merchants just a short drive out of town. I’m always inspired by nature – the bush and the beach,” says Jason.

Steve Cordony’s sideboard styling tips plus our top picks!

Call it what you will (a sideboard, buffet or credenza!) but this particular furniture item is a personal favourite for Jen and I, mostly because it makes a fabulous hero piece and also doubles as a perfect spot on which to place a perfectly curated styled vignette (which as an interior stylist in my other life, thrills me to no end!). Ahem, as far as I see it, coupled with its ability to provide both form and function (they make excellent storage), what is not to love about the humble sideboard?

It’s a sentiment shared by interior stylist Steve Cordony who favours them for their strong visual impact. “Sideboards are a great way to showcase accessories and objet. They give solidity to a space and allow you to play with artwork, lamps and sculpture,” says Steve who loves sideboards with rounded edges. “I love ones that reference the mid-century but in a contemporary way. One of my all-time favourite sideboards is Parq Life by Lee Broom as it’s the perfect mix between traditional and contemporary.”

And when looking to purchase one, it’s essential that you carefully consider its proportions and how they’ll work in your room. “Look at the proportion of the space you have to work with and the balance between other furniture in the room. Getting the length and depth right is crucial,” says Steve.

Style-off winner shoots for United Interiors with James Treble

United Interiors have launched a colourful and on trend new 2017 collection styled by James Treble and our #UIStylistScout competition winner Jen Waite.

“Styling with James — what a blast! He was so wonderful to work with, really easy going, fun and so eager to let me get stuck into the styling,” Jen said. “He was great in sharing his industry experience and tips and tricks with me. I came away feeling tired but thoroughly pleased with what we’d achieved for the campaign.”

The photoshoot focused on the new artwork and rug collections, and Jen and James picked their favourite furniture pieces and new accessories from the Melbourne showroom to complete the look.

The 2017 art collection was curated with diversity in mind. They wanted to offer something for every home and every palette. It focuses on colour and movement, with mostly minimalist abstracts, a handful of figurative pieces and botanical designs. The result is an eclectic assembly of colours, textures and contrast; tied together with a dramatic theme and pops of electric summer hues.

The summer 2017 rug collection, designed with James, continues to focus on the natural and textural elements that are predominantly handmade. They’ve introduced more colour to the collection, concentrating on the weave, offering interesting textures and styles, as opposed to patterns and prints. There’s a focus on coastal, contemporary and tribal.

Jen was one of two finalists who took part in a style-off at the United Interiors showroom at the end of last year. Our readers then voted for their favourite styled image. “Styling the campaign was quite different to the style-off,” Jen says. “United Interiors provided the brief and there was a clear direction in which to head which was great. For the style-off, I had completely free rein to come up with a look that suited myself, and in some ways the lack of brief made it more difficult. The style-off only involved one look, whereas the campaign involved multiple looks, so we moved much more quickly and were finalising pieces for the next shoot while the last was being photographed.”

Jen said this was the first time she’d worked with such a well known brand and industry professional and she loved it! “It’s given me invaluable industry experience and I learnt so much. The reactions from the community have been really encouraging and supportive, and I found a lot of people came out of the woodwork to congratulate me, which was so unexpected and lovely. The campaign, working with United Interiors and James and being paid to do it was amazing, but the support from the community really blew me away.”

Her own favourites from the new range? “Namibian which is more a monochromatic look with a touch of colour, and Beyonce Blue (below) which has a real contrast of light and dark.

“I also love Nether Streams (below) in the acrylic round artwork range – an interesting take on an abstract/resin/marble look. Hard to choose favourites though!”

James, who has been collaborating with United Interiors since 2015, thinks Jen will go far: “It was great working with another creative on the photo shoot. What Jen lacks in experience she more than makes up for in creativity, energy and ideas. Like many out there, she has a great eye and as she simply loves styling, she learns fast, takes direction so well and has her own very strong and valid design voice! I had a great day working with Jen.”

James loves the new collection. “There’s an eclectic mix of styles, colours and tones, making it easy to create totally different looks with the change of a canvas! I like the dramatic pieces with a dash of vibrant colour to really make your room pop. Very summer chic. Of course, I couldn’t go past the new accessories we styled with – in particular there was a printed cockatoo cushion (below) that really sung out to me – no pun intended.

“I particularly love the new product category coming soon in 2017 — the acrylic prints (sneak peek in the very top image). The team at United Interiors have been developing this new artwork for a while, using modern print technology to create artworks printed onto acrylic material. The reflection adds another dimension to the work.”

Current crush: Newly renovated Melbourne bar The Kilburn

Housed in a Victorian-era bank in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, whisky bar The Kilburn received the makeover treatment recently at the deft hands of interior stylists Jacqui Moore and Kristel Griffiths Marshall. “I would describe the vibe as Mid-Century New York with a sprinkling of West Coast cool,” says Kristel, of the highly covetable space.

“The Kilburn was already an established bar but the interior was sparse, masculine and not particularly comfortable. The space was also vast and the brief was to make it feel intimate, sexy, cool and luxurious on a tight budget,” says Jacqui, who certainly achieved that. With its gorgeous use of blue (from peacock to inkier tones), the space combines leather, velvet, brass and marble for a luxe, sexy vibe. It’s certainly a must-visit, the next time we’re in Melbourne!

“We wanted this huge space to feel sophisticated and moody, so it was all about building layers of tone on tone and texture. Inky blues, peacock and minty greens form the base palette and we stained the floorboards and exposed timbers Japanese black. We used leather and velvet for the upholstery and for the final flourish we added highlights of brass and marble,” Jacqui adds.

As for their favourite part of the project, the custom 10-metre brass tile and marble bar is a standout. “The bar features 1,100 stacked subway tiles, which are lit from above and give the place a massive injection of glamour. Our custom “Hustle” neon sign in the back bar was designed to add a youthful, playful element too,” says Kristel.

And one of the more interesting aspects of the renovation is that despite its expensive good looks, it was executed with a tight budget — paint was a key element. “The transformational qualities of paint are amazing. Before the makeover, the bar was full of exposed brown-stained timbers. By painting them inky blue and black we were immediately able to create a super-sexy space without breaking the bank,” says Jacqui.

Jacqui’s favourite aspect, aside from the bar, is the enormous brass chandelier that hangs over the VIP platform and is complemented by Kelly Wearstler wallpaper and artwork by Sydney artist Dina Broadhurst. “It’s sculptural by day and at night it has this beautiful golden glow.”

8 steps to simple nursery style with stylist Eliza Ashe

Somehow, Sydney-based stylist, writer and mum Eliza Ashe makes everything look simple. Perhaps even more impressively, she makes simple look great. In fact, she makes simple look inviting, appealing and stylish. So when she turned to Pottery Barn Kids to style her own baby’s nursery, we knew we were going to love the results.

Simplicity in decorating has become a mantra for so many of us, and with good reason. It might be a cliché, but busy working mums have enough to juggle without feeling confronted with clutter or a cacophony of colours and patterns.

Have a place for everything. If there’s no obvious place for it, rethink its existence in the room. This might mean being a little ruthless with unwanted gifts, but it’s usually not hard to donate to someone who’ll appreciate it more than you.

Leave a little space – literally and otherwise – to flourish. It’s natural to want to give your kids everything, but that doesn’t mean overburdening them with too much stuff. A little minimalism can encourage imagination, resourcefulness and creativity. The humblest – and most unexpected – of objects can teach, enthral and nourish your kids’ minds. An olive tree in the nursery? Why not!

Have less. By having only what you really love, and really use, you’ll save time on cleaning, tidying, searching and sorting. It’s simple, really.

Modern bohemia: This loft-style home is full of upcycled finds

Proving that money is no obstacle when it comes to creating beautiful, interesting interiors, this owner-built Byron Bay house is bursting with warmth and personality. The home of Kit Scholley, one half of the mother/daughter interior styling and staging duo Alida & Miller (we recently featured her mum’s beautiful abode), this home started out as a simple shed before being transformed with an assortment of upcycled finds.

“I am proud all of the repurposed and reworked furniture we used in our home as we really had no limits or creative boundaries. All of our sinks are antique sideboards that we have put old iron sinks into and our kitchen is actually two antique vintage buffets from India. We took the tops off them, tiled them and cut out a hole before finishing them with a beautiful porcelain butler’s sink,” says Kit of the home she shares with her husband and two sons.

Essentially a large, open-plan shed, the home was built by Kit’s husband, father and friends over a one-year period. “We built the shed when I was 25, and had a small budget so we did have a few limitations and restrictions but I wanted to be very true to the fact that it was just a great big old shed. I wanted it to have New York loft type feels, so I tried to stay true to the scale and the open layout of a traditional loft.

“I thought it would be a great feature to have massive open living spaces and I wanted the sheer scale of the house to catch your attention when you first enter through the front door. I think we achieved this,” says Kit.

And while the space is large, the styling gives it a cosy and inviting vibe. “I wanted the large space to also feel very warm and homely so I made lots of little snug sitting areas and living spaces, all with an eclectic feel using lots of beautiful timbers and clashing fabrics and colours alongside big rugs all over the floor to soften the concrete slab,” says Kit.

While her background is in fashion styling and art direction, it seems Kit was destined for interiors – she was drawn to set design on photo shoots. “Having been brought up with professional renovators it was in my blood I would say, so when people started offering me money to style their houses I knew that perhaps a career shift was on the cards!” Kit who now works alongside her mother Margaret in their Byron Bay business.

House tour: Step inside this beautiful Byron Bay abode

One half of the Byron Bay interior styling and staging duo Alida and Miller, Margaret Scholley has the kind of magazine-worthy home that looks straight out of a film set. “I wanted everyone that came to visit to have their own space. Living in Bangalow, you constantly have friends and relatives drop in or stay for a while so I wanted to make sure that the guest rooms were down one end of the house, and our bedrooms and living space was at the other end, with the hub of the home (the kitchen) in the middle. That way, they can stay as long as they like and you don’t want to kick them out after a couple of days.”

Unbound by one particular aesthetic, Margaret takes a free-wheeling approach to styling her home and with pretty fabulous results. “If I like something I will put it in my home no matter what design period it’s from,” says Margaret who clearly has a particular talent for pulling all of the different elements together.

“My favourite part of the home is the kitchen as it has a big table in the middle, so our extended family of nine can all sit around it, chat and eat. I also love that my house is painted pink.”

A seasoned renovator, Margaret started flipping homes over 25 years ago on Sydney’s northern beaches before moving to Byron Bay and doing more of the same. “When we moved to Byron Bay 15 years ago, we continued renovating and selling houses, so I was able to meet a lot of the local real estate agents, and they were able to see what we did. Three years ago, McGrath Byron Bay invited my daughter Kit and I to style some homes they had listed for sale, and our property styling business Alida and Miller was born.” Her business has now expanded into private interior design work too.

The Block week 9 room reveals: Room reprises & terrace

In addition to re-doing a room this week on The Block, alfresco skills were put to the test as it was time to tackle the terraces. And while the room reprises were a mixed bag, the judges were mostly thrilled with the couples’ outdoor spaces.

The Block’s largest terrace, Karlie and Will didn’t disappoint with their gorgeous outdoor space that Shaynna called an “urban oasis” and “a big selling point.” Darren was impressed with the couple’s use of layering – particularly when it came to the plants. “I love how they’ve used so many plants and I’m impressed with the layers and finishes,” said Darren.

Neale was similarly impressed and called it “beautiful and lush and what everyone wants in a modern inner-city terrace.” Darren finished up by saying it was “the jewel in the crown.”

The couple’s room reprise didn’t light up the judges as much as their terrace did however, with Neale calling it only “marginally improved.”

After last week’s perfect score of 30 (a result they shared with Karlie and Will), the veteran renovators had high hopes this week and while Neale absolutely loved their terrace, Shaynna wasn’t so complimentary. In particular, she wasn’t a fan of the tiles that ran up onto the ceiling and the outdoor display shelves. She did, however, love the fireplace coffee table.

The judges did agree on Dan and Carleen’s room re-do though. After a lambasting for their efforts in the guest bedroom and WIR, the judges were delighted with the changes. “It is so much brighter,” said Darren noting the fresh new paint and bed linen.

Andy & Ben – 17

Not only were the Geelong boys pretty exhausted this week but a miniscule budget meant they didn’t have much to work with. Darren said their terrace had a “prison-like feel” and Neale said it “had no soul.” Ouch!

The boys’ had to re-do their hallway too and the judges were very happy with the results. Darren found the artwork to be “much better than before” and I agree – I’m a big fan of Louise de Weger’s work and the print ticked all the right boxes for me.

Julia & Sasha 29.5

Julia and Sasha came out on top this week (a position they shared with another couple but more on that later) with Shaynna calling their terrace “beautiful” and Darren calling it “wonderful.” The girls created a lovely outdoor space that wasn’t compromised by their lack of budget. In fact Shaynna noted that despite monetary constraints “the girls have nailed it in a great way that makes it feel expensive.”

Darren loved the connection to the view and said the skylights were “phenomenal” while Neale added that “there’s a lot to love about this apartment – it’s beautiful, everything about it.”

The girls’ had to restyle their guest bedrooms and the judges were very happy with the results. Shaynna concluded with high praise saying Julia and Sasha’s apartment was “the prettiest ever on The Block.”

In equal first place with Julia and Sasha, Kim and Chris’ terrace was not only lovely to look at (those green walls are beautiful!), it delivered on the technology front too. From heating to a speaker system, TV, fans and great lighting, Neale called it “perfection” and “absolutely sensational.” All of the judges loved how the couple used a mirror splash back to give the space depth too.

Kim and Chris also had to re-do their bathroom which saw them remove the moulding and replace the gold tap ware with black alternatives – I thought it was quite amazing how much impact a few small changes could make. Neale said it was “still out of step with rest of the apartment but at least it’s in step with itself.”

How to: Stage a property with plenty of personality

When you think of home staging, or property styling, bland, uninteresting interiors are often evoked. Designed to appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers, staged properties can lack personality, but it needn’t be the case says Natalie Lysaught of Sydney’s Advantage Property Styling. “Simply because you are styling a home for sale, it doesn’t need to be bland to appeal to a broad buyer audience. We steer away from the ‘cookie-cutter’ styling approach and lean towards a more personalised and bespoke look for each of our projects, hence creating a unique point of interest for prospective buyers,” says Natalie who says selling a lifestyle is key.

“Clients tend to opt for a more personalised look so that as potential buyers wander through the property, they can visualise themselves living a beautiful life in the home, spending lazy Sunday mornings in the bedroom, or cosy winter nights in the lounge room. In this digital age, great styling and photography are non-negotiable. “The key to styling a home for sale is that the property must stand out, not only at open homes, but initially online and in print to increase the number of potential buyers that will then decide to go to the open house,” says Natalie.

Advantage Property Styling recently staged the property pictured and created a casual, bohemian, tropical feel – it’s definitely not dull and Natalie says artwork, texture and plants were key.

“We changed up our art hanging approach with this property and it’s something I’d recommend. Some good options are to layer the artwork on shelves or window sills where possible, choose a large focus piece of art to ground the room, consider using clusters of art as opposed to matching pairs if the room calls for it and look for other alternatives to frames for wall hangings such as tribal necklaces, macramé, Turkish towels, baskets and mirrors,” says Natalie.

“Using lots of textures including timber, linen, feathers and concrete to appeal to the senses leaves your buyer with not only a visual memory of the property, but a tangible feeling,” says Natalie who favours handmade local pieces where possible. “Purchase statement handmade pieces from local suppliers – not only is this a great idea for creating a point of difference, it’s also a great feeling to know you are supporting small local artisans rather than mass production,” says Natalie.

Ultimately, you want the home to feel inviting, like a sanctuary. “Our stylists spend hours creating this relaxed look, but the feel is as though it’s just been casually put together using lots of layers – a range of cushions and a throw on the sofa plus floor accessories such as baskets also help achieve this look really well. Avoid too much symmetry, for example, in the lounge use one side table lamp and have accessories on the other,” says Natalie.

The seeming unstoppable styling doyenne Shaynna Blaze has collaborated with The Rug Collection on a gorgeous new range for spring/summer 2016 called ‘Woven Simplicity.’ As its name would suggest, it’s a rather textural affair executed in a simple, neutral colour palette – a truly versatile range

“Woven Simplicity is all about bold textures created by the knots, plaits and weaves. I wanted to create something visually quite simple but divine underfoot. As the name suggests, Woven Simplicity is effortless,” says Shaynna of the collection that is available in a series of four subtle shades including cashmere, ink, pewter and chinchilla.

My favourite from the range, Spotlight, combines plaits and knots with a circular motif – it’s both cosy and minimal at the same time which is no mean feat. “Spotlight injects a sense of fun into an interior. The contrasting textures created by the plaits and knots of the rug’s weave establish a focus in the rug’s design that can work equally well in a dramatic environment or a recreational space,” says Shaynna.

Another minimal design, Resolve, is sure to build a fan base – it’s simple without being boring. “Resolve is designed to provide a base upon which you can build an entire interior. The single colour with its contrasting white or black lines works well in formal, informal and casual spaces,” says Shaynna of the versatile design.

Of the collaboration, The Rug Collection is pretty excited to have The Block judge on board for a second time. “Shaynna’s knowledge and expertise in the styling and design industry is second to none. Covet My Coffee Table: Interiors Addict’s Amy Collins-Walker

Meet Amy Collins-Walker, Interiors Addict features writer, interior stylist and mum of two. This week we’re bringing back Covet My Coffee Table with a look inside her Perth home.

That’s a cool statement coffee table! Why did you pick it, where did you buy it, how long have you had it? I bought the coffee table almost four years ago from Empire Homewares. It’s made from a tree root and no two are ever the same. It’s a special piece and I love its organic aesthetic. There’s even a piece of limestone wedged between a couple of the branches — I’m a big fan of bringing the outdoors in. I also love a design statement and it certainly ticks that box.

How important do you think a coffee table is as a piece of furniture? As furniture items go, the coffee table is pretty integral. Aside from its obvious functionality it can really tie a space together and act as the hero piece in the room. I would always favour a statement coffee table for that reason.

How much difference to your room do you think styling your coffee table can make? Styling up your coffee table can make a huge difference to your lounge room. Aside from the design aspect, coffee table styling is a great way to reveal your passions and interests. It’s also a space that can be ever-changing, depending on what you’re into at any given time.

Why do you have what you have on your table and do you change it up often? I always have a large vase with a bunch of blooms or even just some green foliage. The yellow bird is from my favourite shop in the Blue Mountains, Inner Space, and it used to have a stand until my toddler broke it! It now rests on a copper jug given to me by a dear friend. The metallic gold and white jar is from that shop too — I love a metallic splash and particularly as a contrast to the natural wood of the coffee table. The heart is a piece of Mexican folk art — it’s hand-carved and covered in good luck charms. The books are a random selection of some of my favourites in the design, art and photography spheres. I used to change up my coffee table a bit more regularly but mostly now I change the vase and blooms as, with two small children, my free time is minimal.

So, do the children influence what’s on your coffee table? Having two small children certainly does influence what I place on my coffee table. Ironically, I could never leave a coffee there! Most of the items are unbreakable but if they aren’t, they’re too heavy to move like a large vase. Obviously I’ve had some casualties though — the bird for one!

As a stylist, what are your top tips for our readers on how to style their coffee table if they don’t know where to start? Firstly, the things on your coffee table should always have meaning; they should be things you love and enjoy. Second, I think fresh flowers or foliage are a must and that can be as simple as some greenery plucked from your garden. You don’t need to spend a lot of money. You should also make sure to include pieces of varying height and texture too — both key to any styled vignette!

“Summer is no doubt my favourite time of the year and Byron Bay is my favourite place to escape to – it’s paradise and of course it was a great excuse to head up there for the campaign shoot. I love the work/play balance I get as the creative director of my dream-come-true homewares range,” says Jason.

Hard pressed to pick a favourite from the new line-up, Jason eventually settles on the stripe utility blanket. “I worked hard for something new in this category – it will be your summer best friend and it’s a great piece to take from sofa to the beach or poolside and back again!” says Jason of the nautical-themed blanket that features soft terry toweling on one side and printed, striped canvas on the reverse. It’s available in navy, yellow, peach and light blue.

As for our favourites, the frayed-edge round ottomans and matching cushions stood out for us. Available in stone and a gorgeous olive tone, we love the tan-coloured accent details. “My brand is about relaxed, honest and natural style. I love canvas and leather and we use these materials as they are classic and timeless,” says Jason.

The all important assisting path to becoming a stylist

Not a week goes by when the latest crop of wannabe stylists don’t come searching for a job or work experience via our jobs board. Styling is a job that it seems everyone thinks they want or could be great at. Few realise the hard work involved and the persistence required to break into this very competitive industry.

Today, we chat to Noël Coughlan about how she did it and the all important path to becoming a fully fledged stylist. This means assisting and learning from those who’ve been there and done it, often for no pay.

Noël’s background was a varied one and it was after working in fashion for many years that she came to study interior design and decoration. “During my studies, I was lucky enough to be introduced to Julia Green (of Greenhouse Interiors) through a mutual friend and from here I began assisting her on various jobs. It was this encounter which put me on the styling path. I never imagined that four years later I’d be working full time with Greenhouse Interiors and running my own design practice.”

While the work involved in assisting was what she expected, the reality of styling came as a a bit of a rude awakening. “Styling is such a glamorous word and evokes thoughts of cruisey days fluffing about, playing with cushions and beautiful things. Although this is partly true, it is damn hard work. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes before a photo shoot even comes to fruition. Creating concepts, sourcing props, locations, client meetings. There is a myriad of things that need to be considered before shoot day arrives.” It didn’t put Noël off though because of two important things: she wasn’t afraid of hard work and she absolutely loved what she was doing.

“When you truly love what you do, it’s absolutely worth it.” And assisting is without doubt the best way to learn the ropes. “Hands-on experience is the only way to really understand the wonderful world of styling. It really is a different world to what most people imagine. Learning from experienced stylists is invaluable, and oh so important. There are so many tricks of the trade which you learn along the way – so many so, that I am still learning!”

While many stylists will work with a variety of assistants trying to gain experience, not all of them will get offered a job, like Noël did with Julia. So how can you make the best impression? “Being passionate, committed, hard working and trustworthy,” says Noël. “Staying grounded and humble will also take you a long way in this industry.”

Another important relationship, other than the one with your stylist mentor, is the one you have with your photographer. “You can have all the ideas in the world, but if you do not have a photographer who understands your aesthetic and vision you really have nothing,” Noël says. “Building a strong relationship with a photographer will enable you to work as a team and achieve some absolute beauty. Annette O’Brien and Cricket Studio are my two photographic creative geniuses. They know how to take my vision and turn it into magic.”

Noël notes it’s really important to be individual and follow your own style, rather than getting caught up in trends, which can easily happen. This will set you apart from the rest, and perseverance is key. “If you want something badly enough, keep at it!”

Noël assisted for about two years before she felt she had built up enough knowledge, experience and confidence to take on her own styling projects. “Knowing that Julia had 100% confidence in me, gave me the confidence to jump in and go for it! It’s so nice to receive recognition for my own projects.” Noël now also trades under NC Interiors, her own design and styling practice, which launched its new website just this week.
