Dining in Design: Restaurant Arras

Dining Design: Restaurant Arras

Paul Smith pinstripes, neon perspex and graffiti art meet in this fine dining restaurant without the pretension. In my new series about restaurant and bar interiors, I took a closer look at Arras in Sydney’s CBD, which manages not to take itself too seriously.

I sat down for a fantastic lunch with Liz Boyd of Colourmark Design, the designer behind the space, which used to house Justin North’s Becasse. A year after moving from its tricky Walsh Bay location (where it had a loyal but underground following) to prime CBD real estate, business has never been better and Arras’ design was just this month highly commended in the Eat-Drink-Design Awards.

Samantha Wills to branch into homewares plus win your own beautiful mirrored jewellery chest

Creating beautiful things is second nature to jewellery designer Samantha Wills, who lives between Sydney and New York. And it’s no surprise she loves her own homes to be gorgeous too. I was so excited when she told me recently that a move into homewares is on the agenda, following the success of her divine mirrored jewellery chest.

(Above: Samantha’s first foray into homewares has been this beautiful jewellery chest)

(Above: My very own chest, which I was lucky enough to be gifted)

SW loves nothing more than creating little vignettes in her homes, which are full of fresh flowers and candles. “I think my style is a fusion of bohemian meets luxury, so my interior reflects this. Mixing French mirrors with carved Balinese wood, flowers and faux furs with skull prints and sculptures!”

Living between two amazing cities, it was hard at first for her to feel at home in either of them. “For about two years, I could truly say I did not know where home was. This sounds stupid but I was travelling so much, I didn’t really have an anchor to a place. It is not good for the soul when you feel most at home in an airport lounge! So I made a conscious effort to  invest time, money and energy into both my NYC and Sydney homes to ensure they did not feel like a hotel room, but very homely.

“I have mementoes in both homes. I know I won’t have two apartments forever, but I don’t think about this when I’m decorating otherwise I wouldn’t be true to my style. I’d also be thinking, ‘I love this (say a piece of furniture) but if I have to ship it around the world in a few years, that’s going to be difficult’. The way in which I build my home now is very much in the moment and I think there is importance in living that way, rather than assuming what you think might happen in the future.” (Having moved to Australia from the UK myself, this really resonates with me. I remember the time I decided to sell everything I had in storage in London and start spending money on Sydney furniture, it was a big deal psychologically.)

And now for a bit of an exclusive! Samantha revealed to me she is going to be making a move into homewares. “Absolutely! Jewellery just happened to be the medium I worked with when I launched the brand, but my love of all things creative is the passion behind it. SW STYLE  (her new online magazine) is a very good example of other creative projects I enjoy doing and an extension of our signature style. I’m currently working with my team on both a homewares offering and a small leather collection that will look to be released early next year. The homewares category is one I am very excited about. I think our homes are such a canvas to portray our personal style.”

The ridiculously gorgeous jewellery chest was 18 months in development. And before you say $399 is too expensive, you want to try carrying this thing. It is heavy and huge (there’s a story about me trying to get it into a cab with one arm while opening the door with another, but you don’t need to know about it) and mirrored, lined and BEAUTIFUL. It’s almost a piece of furniture in its own right. You can even fit your wooden SW boxes inside it.

“As all our pieces come in hand carved wooden boxes, the response to this was, and continues to be, overwhelming. I was receiving loads of photographs of how SW fans would display their boxes. Some had so many they were playing life size Jenga with them, some burning candles in them, it was just really inspiring to see the packaging playing such a large role in people’s homes,” says Samantha. “I personally like the concept of a woman’s dressing table looking like a display from an exquisite boutique. I also love a vintage/smoked mirror so thought that an oversized chest would be a great extension for SW lovers to not only house their growing collections, but also as a beautiful addition to their homes.”

Samantha wanted the chest to be both functional and a beautiful piece on its own. “I’m currently working on some new designs with the original mirrored one in mind and designed to be displayed all together. I am looking at incorporating new materials that really personify our signature bohemian luxe style, mixing wood with mirror, turquoise embellishments with gold metal overlays and mother of pearl inlays. I cannot wait until they are finished to show you!”

WOW. How gorgeous do they sound?!

Would you like one for yourself? Seriously! It’s currently sold out but Samantha is giving one away to a very lucky Interiors Addict reader in a Pinterest competition I’ll be announcing tomorrow. Perhaps even more exciting, Samantha has promised Interiors Addict the first glimpse inside her New York apartment soon!

Check out Samantha’s jewellery collection at her website.

Orson & Blake’s David Heimann says don’t take your home too seriously

Orson & Blake’s David Heimann knows a thing or two about beautiful pieces and creating gorgeous interiors but he says you should never take it all too seriously.

“People should be encouraged to feel confident about their homes. The best interiors are always fascinating due to the very personalised objects and collections,” he says. “Individuality is key to a welcoming comfortable space. Sometimes people need a little help in pulling it all together, grouping things, editing or often introducing one large strong element to ground a room or home.”

He’s not a fan of decorating a whole home to a specific theme either. “Somehow people can be a little too serious about it all. It feels right to mix it up a little, keep it slightly playful sometimes and bring soul to a space. Cookie cutter rooms feel like shopping centre spaces. Self expression pays off in spades, whether it’s using a favorite colour boldly or introducing fascinating art. Why not hang a precious painting in the loo? Place a giant tree in the bedroom or hang a chandelier in the garden!”

David’s own home is near Centennial Park in Bondi. “It feels a lot like a bowerbird’s nest, full of art, books and stuff that intrigues me. I have a mix of vintage, contemporary and ethic furniture.” He likes black interiors and beds loaded with textiles collected on travels. “I feel comfortable surrounded by interesting shapes in monochromatic tones. That’s for now anyhow. Things can change. Next month I may need intense colour somewhere.”

While Orson & Blake has long been a Sydney institution, David became a popular TV personality more recently as host of Nine’s homeMADE (alongside judges Sibella Court and Neale Whitaker). “Television was a great opportunity to work with a large team on a project that was far removed from my usual working life,” he says. “Experience in television doesn’t really change things though. I must say that I like the reality of my own day-to-day work!”

The team at Orson & Blake are currently working on their new collections for 2012. They’ll be showing them to clients and designers at decoration + design in Sydney in February. “It’s looking really interesting with a strong move towards many new colours, embracing a kind of Bloomsbury feeling. It’s familiar bohemian with a contemporary take on comfort. I particularly love the Tobacco canvas sectional sofa, piped with contrast leather and a huge circular freestanding bookcase. We’ve included brilliant colored ceramics, some exciting new tabletop and giant ikat canvas textiles in deep saturated tones.”

O&B’s Surry Hills store now includes a fashion section and more home accessories than ever before. And they recently opened a popup store in Mosman. There’s a lot more competition out there than there was when David set up O&B in Woollahra with his mother and business partner Mandy almost two decades ago.

“I think it’s great that Australians have embraced decorating, collecting and appreciating design,” says David. “There are many fabulous stores that cover a huge spectrum of tastes and themes. We consider our look a very personal one and one that we have adhered to in our 20 years. We like a mix of textures, finishes, origins and eras. We like to introduce freshness as much as possible. It keeps us intrigued and alive. Juxtaposition is key.

As far as looking about and shopping, I like nothing more than digging around in vintage stores, looking through ethnic textiles or gazing about a gallery.”

O&B’s ever evolving collection aims to embrace the mood of the time, providing interesting and functional items and objects to improve our way of living. David says: “We endeavor to make our stores a hub of all things beautiful and exciting, offering a unique blend of themes and ideas.”

Amazing opportunity to design your own Sydney harbourside bar and win $10,000. Enter now! The Premis

Amazing opportunity to design your own Sydney harbourside bar and win $10,000. Enter now!

The Premise from Drambuie gives one winner a shot (pardon the too-obvious pun) of a lifetime to create their vision for the ultimate bar. With a capacity of 120, the top secret venue is poised and ready for transformation into one of Sydney’s hottest locations. From a design dream to absolute reality, the winner’s vision will come to life as the most talked about night out in the city.

You want to know how to enter, right? Inspired by Drambuie’s core values: risk, rebellion, passion and mystery, you’re invited to design your own, unique bar. Just film and upload a short, two-minute video, demonstrating your concept/idea to The Premise web page. The public will then vote online for their favourite bar while you social network the hell out of your entry!

The five highest-voted entries and five wildcards will become finalists. Those ten will then be asked to pitch their ideas to The Premise judging panel. The lucky winner will be flown to Sydney to brief the team, and then go full steam ahead to bring the winning concept to life. The bar will trade on nine separate nights in October.

The winner receives a $10,000 cash prize and will be given a bar manager, security, alcohol supplies, bar equipment, bar facilities and staff…in fact absolutely everything they will need to run the bar of their dreams.

The 2010 winners were industrial designer Rob Dumaresq and musician Hugh Gurney. They impressed the panel with their speakeasy-style concept (pictured), which was set behind the facade of a pet shop, called The Doghouse. “The Premise gave us the chance to explore our creativity in ways that neither of us had ever done before,” said Rob. “The entire experience was exciting and stimulating and at every step of the way we were developing fresh ideas, learning new skills and meeting new people.”

Enter now at www.thepremise.com.au and like the The Premise Facebook page to follow news and details about the competition. Entries close at midnight on 12 September 2011.

What I’ve learned about moving house

I just moved into a (gorgeous) new apartment so I’m exhausted and hence my posts have been a little thin on the ground. My apologies! Normal service will resume shortly!

Meanwhile, here is what I’ve learned about moving:

1. Moving is expensive. Not just because you end up paying double rent and double bond in the crossover period but also because you have to pay removalists (or van hire and cash to your boyfriend’s brother!), connection/disconnection fees for electricity and gas, mail redirection fees, takeout food in the period where you can’t find a fork or plate and many coffees, French champagne to toast your new home, and a complete pantry re-stock because you threw away all those nearly-empty bottles you couldn’t bring yourself to pack. Then there’s a LOT of cleaning products to buy to clean the old place, box hire (yes, I paid to hire boxes), fresh flowers to make the new place feel homely, not to mention all the new furniture you have now decided you suddenly ”need” to replace what you already had and was perfectly fine in the old place. Then there’s cushions. Why do we always need more cushions (by ‘we’ I mean women!)? Who am I kidding, there is still so much more to spend. I have some new cushions being made for me as I type and I have my eyes on all kinds of new homewares (that’s the trouble with this blog!). My boyfriend says we can’t buy anything unless we NEED it. What kind of ridiculous philosophy is that, I ask you?

2. I am exceedingly impatient and have anxious tendancies. I have been here for 3 nights and I wanted to have it all perfect by.. well… yesterday. I’m still feeling anxious because it isn’t all quite right yet. I can’t just sit and relax and enjoy the new home, I have to tidy and unpack, collapse boxes, worry about offending the new neighbours by overfilling the bins, arrange and rearrange the dining table and chairs, worry about where my owl collection is going to be displayed and which artwork is going to go on which wall. I see my own faults and I know I’m ridiculous but I can’t help it. It’s the Monica Geller in me!

3. You can’t have it all. Unless you’re extremely rich, you cannot ever find everything you want in a new apartment, especially in Sydney. I really believe this. There’s always something. Our new place has just been renovated so it’s open plan, shiny and new, in a great suburb and with a balcony. It doesn’t, however, have the water view I’ve had before (in the apartment with the crappy kitchen and bathroom, grumpy neighbour and EVIL letting agent) and (shock horror) it doesn’t have a bath (I am such a bath person!) or undercover parking (boyfriend is more upset about that one). You simply cannot have it all, so be thankful for the good things you do have and remember a house is only a home because of who is in it and how you make the best of it.
