Jumbled: Ruling homewares retail on a global stage!

With traditional retail a very challenging space to inhabit, much has been said about the need for retailers to innovate. Given online shopping is so temptingly easy, I believe you have to create something truly experiential and notably different to lure people out of their homes. And one such space is the glorious Jumbled in the regional NSW city of Orange.

Jumbled

The brainchild of Pip Brett, Jumbled is so much more than a retail store – the shop is housed alongside a clothing store and coffee shop inside a beautifully renovated old Masonic lodge, collectively referred to as The Sonic. “Our aim was to provide customers with a space to connect, be inspired and feel joy and I feel we’ve really achieved this over the years,” says Pip who opened the space in 2013 and offers workshops, events, styling and travel experiences to Morocco amongst many other things.

Where do you even begin?
Where do you even begin?

“Although the landscape is changing, there are still some really exciting things happening in retail, but you can no longer get away with just having a shopfront,” says Pip who explains that having a cafe within the space has turned it into a meeting place that encourages a feeling of community and delivers a special experience unlike anywhere else.

Jumbled
The cafe. There are no physical barriers between spaces but there are distinct zones.

“We’re also trying to give back to our customers where we can, and our free e-book worked really well with brand interviews, travel features and inspiring images to enjoy. You also need to stay true to what you love and only sell products and brands that you personally believe in and that authenticity is what keeps the customers coming back,” says Pip.

Jumbled

And what a product line-up Jumbled has – some of the best Australian homewares and furniture rub shoulders with leading Australian art, and it’s all styled up to look like a series of heavenly domestic interiors that no doubt help customers envision the products in their own spaces.

Sage x Clare, Society of Wanderers, Langdon LTD, Kaz Morton, Marmoset Found, Globewest and Castle are just some of the brands to be found – all merchandised with a captivating, signature sense of abundance. Those brands sit alongside beautiful original art from Australian artists such as Annie Everingham, Spencer Shakespeare, Leah Bartholomew, Georgie Wilson and Elle Campbell.

Jumbled

The success of Jumbled continues online too where the store has built an enviable social media community of over 90,000 followers across multiple platforms. “Social media has been a total game changer! It’s really allowed us to connect with people well beyond the boundaries of our region as well as some amazing artists and brands. We love that we can share part of ourselves and our store with people all over the world,” says Pip who runs a successful online arm of Jumbled to cater to the brand’s many fans across the world.

Jumbled’s success was recognised in Chicago recently when it went up against 30 other winners from across five continents to take home the Global Honoree Award for Excellence in Homewares Retailing.“When we arrived in Chicago, my first impression was ‘Oh my God, this is a huge deal!’ Seeing the other finalists from all over the world inspired me to do more and be better. The options are limitless, and retail is not dead, but you need to be more than just a store and you need to sell more than just products,” says Pip who celebrated the win with her team and loyal customer base upon returning from the US.

Jumbled

Jumbled

One such innovation, and a great example of offering more, is the recent launch of the Jumbled Art Superstar Competition, designed to unearth an amazing new artist. A long-held dream of Pip’s, she relished sifting through the work of the many hopeful artists that applied. “I originally hoped for maybe 20-to-30 entries, but in the end we had over 180 amazing artists apply which was beyond my wildest dreams! My team and I shortlisted and shortlisted again, but in the end the decision was unanimous,” says Pip who selected Newcastle artist Jackie Anderson as the inaugural winner. Jackie’s prize includes the opportunity to sell her art at Jumbled alongside a 12-month mentorship. “Her work makes my heart sing!” says Pip.

And with such a great eye for interiors, I couldn’t help but ask Pip what her design ethos is. “I live by the mantra ‘more is more, less is a bore!’ and try to advise people to buy homewares that they absolutely love, not simply because they think it it’s on trend or because it might work with their colour scheme.  I love colour and texture, which I definitely get from my mum and I truly believe you can make anything work together, it’s just about finding a key item or cushion to tie it all together.”

One of our favourite brands, AURA Home, opens a retail store

For years Tracie Ellis would drive by a little corner store with its cascading ivy wall in Melbourne’s inner east, and dream of it one day being hers. And a week ago it became reality; with Tracie opening the bricks and mortar version of her very successful homewares brand, AURA Home.

Having established the label in 2000 and launched the online store nine years later, for Tracie, opening a retail space was an opportunity to take a step back and interact with the local community. “There’s no doubt there is a huge customer base that loves the convenience of shopping online, but there are also a lot of people who like to touch and feel our products. Our new store is a place to meet our loyal and new customers and inspire them to create beautiful spaces in their homes.”

With that idea in mind, Tracie decided to move away from the traditional shop layout, instead designing – with the help of interior designer Amanda Lynn – a space focused on the core areas of the home. “We have a living room area, to showcase our cushions and throws; a dining area, featuring our ceramics and linen; a beautiful bedroom space for our sheets and quilt covers; and a bathroom area draped with our beautiful towels.”

As well as AURA Home products, the store has incorporated furniture and homewares many may recognise from the brand’s beautiful photography. These include statement pieces from MRD furniture and HK Living, limited edition Isamu Sawa prints, no.27 fragrance house candles and much more. “We have worked with some very special people from some of our favourite brands to produce a curated range of products,” says Tracie. “We wanted to make sure we had something for everyone – the only problem is I keep buying things for myself every time I am in the store!”

Tracie

Situated in the suburb of Malvern, the high street is known as one of the go-to places to shop for furniture and homewares. “We would like to help build on that and create a place Melbournians can shop for all things home,” explains Tracie. “Malvern is beautiful and we already feel like we are part of the local community.”

Visit the AURA Home Concept Store at 1371 Malvern Rd, Malvern, Melbourne. And if you’re in the area next Thursday 7 December, make sure you check out the store, as they’ll be open until 9pm with champagne flowing!

Singapore furniture brand Castlery lands in Australia

It’s the Singapore furniture brand that has been synonymous with stylish and affordable designs since 2013, and now Castlery has arrived on Australian shores. With both countries sharing similar lifestyles and home aspirations, Australia was a natural place to expand. “Consumer spending habits and purchasing power is similar in both countries,” explains co-founder Declan Ee. “While we definitely had to adapt to Australian tastes and culture, we didn’t have to completely re-invent our product lines.”

Born out of a frustration of wanting designer furniture but not being able to afford the exxy showroom prices, Declan and his three business partners decided to do something about it. Seeing a gap in the market they began sourcing furniture direct from factories. “We realised that well-made designer furniture was unjustifiably expensive due to the cumulative costs of middlemen, warehouses and shopfronts. So at Castlery we own the entire supply chain, this allows us to cut out all the unnecessary mark-ups and pass on the savings to the consumer.”

With a focus on trend-driven, forward-thinking design, Castlery fits perfectly between mass-market flatpack furniture and pricey luxury brands. From its iconic pendant lights to its extensive range of furniture and accessories, the brand offers something for every taste, with a consistent flow of new releases and furniture customisation.

Declan

While the brand is predominantly online, Castlery’s Australian launch has seen both an online shop and a showroom in Sydney’s Alexandria; a big move for a brand that prides itself on keeping costs low. “Having a showroom comes down to customer experience,” says Declan. “For furniture we quickly realised that customers like to touch the products, to experience what they feel and look like. It helps the customers to better visualise whether it will fit in their homes and ultimately leads to a better customer experience.”

However, for those not in Sydney, Castlery’s online shop is engaging and seamless, with full transparency on delivery times and prices. “Our website ensures customers can do research about what furniture they want, be provided with inspiration, key measurements and choose fabric or leather customisation. This allows them to save time and make decisions without visiting the store.”

Take 5 with Emma Cleine of Lumiere Art + Co

Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best advice they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Emma Cleine, the artist and designer behind Lumiere Art + Co.

Emma Cleine of Lumiere Art + Co

1. What is your favourite cafe?

I live in Red Hill South, on the Mornington Peninsula, home of wineries and beaches. When I’m home I like to keep it local, so it’s a toss-up between Johnny Ripe, my local bakery with UNBELIEVABLE vanilla slices (I’m shouting here!) or Cellar and Pantry, my local supermarket and post office, which has a deck where you can sip coffee and admire the view of the surrounding orchard. Both offer local produce, locally roasted coffee beans, friendly faces and treats to boot.

2. What is your favourite holiday destination?

Italy. I’ve been too many times to count and I’ll keep returning. Culture, food, its family friendly, amazing contemporary art, the Biennale, beaches, cheap champagne, cheese and prosecco. What more do you need?

3. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

Can I say something I gave myself? I bought our family a Miranda Skoczek painting last year and it was so monumental in my life my timeline has now turned into BM (before Miranda) and AM (after Miranda). Life AM is amazing we all enjoy this artwork everyday.

4. What three people would be at your perfect dinner party?

Australian printmaker Margaret Preston, she pioneered Australian modern art in a time when most women were homemakers. I love her foresight and incredible respect for Australia. Lena Dunham, writer and producer of HBO’s Girls. She says what we all think and gets stuff done. Lastly, David Bowie, the guy is superhuman and a true artist. What a combo. I would serve fondue and local wines.

5. What is your favourite shop?

I would have to say Dinosaur Designs. I’ve been visiting since I was in my first year at uni and each time I would visit was a really big deal. My friends and I would plan our day around visiting the store on Chapel Street and I would save, save and save to buy a bangle or necklace. We thought of the staff as gods. It’s timeless and always exciting. The colours and textures are inspiring and holy moley they are have done so well.

Antique wares from the French countryside to the Inner West

From roadside lunch stops with crusty baguettes and smelly cheese to digging through a dealer’s shed in search of that diamond in the rough, for Gavin Sainsbury and Scott Jenkins, it’s all in a day’s work.

Palace Trader 1-DSC_0124

Owners of Palace Trader, an antique furniture and homewares store in Sydney’s Inner West, their sourcing trips to the French countryside are full of gorgeous scenery and beautiful vintage wares, but also, a whole lot of hard work. “A typical day starts at 6am and ends by doing paperwork around 10pm,” explains Gavin. “To keep costs down, we do it all ourselves, the packing and wrapping, the carting and hauling and all the export and import paperwork. That said, it’s great fun, the shopping is addictive and so is the hunt! But it’s rapid. The most recent trip we travelled 5,600 kilometres in three weeks to fill a 20-foot container!”

Palace Trader 2-DSC_0097

Recently receiving their French delights in store, they’ve focused heavily on buying items that are accessible for people in both size and price, whilst still being eclectic, unusual and irresistible. Full of glassware, linen, ceramics and furniture, Palace Trader is the place to discover a vintage French flag for your re-creation of Les Miserables, or pick up a set of fine crystal glasses for your next dinner party.

Palace Trader 4 -DSC_0221

Opening just under a year ago, Gavin and Scott, a puppeteer and nurse respectively, began Palace Trader with the hope of finding a new full-time profession. Both sharing a passion for antique shopping and collecting unique pieces, they wanted to try something challenging that they could do together.

However, if there were any concerns these were quickly shooed away, for the fact that they didn’t need to rent a storefront, they actually already lived in one! “A shop was added to the front of our 1880s terrace 100 years ago,” says Gavin. “Since then it has traded as a barber shop, a dressmaker, a secondhand furniture store and an etched glass shop. For the past 25 years it has been residential, but then we decided to change it up and start Palace Trader.”

Palace Trader 3 -DSC_0214

Open Wednesday to Sunday, Palace Trader is the culmination of two people with an eye for the beautiful and unusual. A perfect haven for the high-end interior designer or the average Joe who has fallen in love with that one special item; this is small business at its very best and well worth a visit!

Henry Corbett & Co: a holistic approach to lifestyle where interiors are just one element

We all have a ‘dream’ space, a place in our heads that we retreat to to escape the daily grind. Maybe it’s an old cosy bedroom from a childhood home, or a hammock stretched between two palms on an anonymous stretch of white sand – be it fictional or real, when we imagine this place, we are immediately transported to a space perfectly idyllic and suited to all of own personal tastes and needs. Well, Henry Corbett & Co can help to make some of those dreams come true – at least for those of us with more luxurious taste, that is.
