Interview: Luxxbox’s Jason Bird on taking his designs to the US

Luxxbox owner Jason Bird has already achieved more than many designers could ever dream. He’s designed stools for Google’s headquarters in California, had his table featured in sci-fi film Prometheus, and most recently been announced as a top five finalist in New York’s Battery Park Draw Up A Chair competition.

Jason Bird Double

But for Jason, who started his Brisbane-based business in 2006, success has come after lots of hard work. Leaving the comforts of working for someone else and taking the plunge to start up on his own.

“I spent a good deal of my early creative years designing for other companies,” explains Jason. “I had a lot of ideas and it was time to start doing my own thing. So I took a risk and opened a showroom in order to have a direct dialogue with the user. We gained some national and international attention and it has grown from there.”

South Chair arrives in New York
The South Chair: A finalist in the Draw Up A Chair competition

Designing furniture, lighting and objects, Jason’s manufacturing and industrial design background sees him bring a high level of understanding when it comes to materials and processes. It is these skills that Jason believes are central to the Luxxbox style: “I like to challenge and be challenged, so it’s often about how to utilise materials and processes in unique combinations and formats; this often informs the design. I like to use colour and material combinations as well, and generally create well detailed and non-traditional forms.”

Having already reached a broad audience Australia wide, Jason has now set his sights on Luxxbox conquering the US market. Yet rather than just shipping abroad, he’s gone one step further, establishing a manufacturing department in California.

“Australia is so used to importing furniture products that we probably don’t realise that 25-to-40% of the price is in freight, not to mention the carbon footprint,” says Jason. “Other markets do not import as much and are not happy with the cost, logistics and lead time associated with importing large furniture. So in order to expand in the US we really needed to think about how to do this without such issues. So we developed the strategy of distributed manufacturing, taking a select group of our products and manufacturing them in the US.”

In the next few years, Jason hopes to not only continue manufacturing in the US, but to begin doing so in Europe. He also hopes to open design studios in both continents.

But for now it’s business as usual, with Luxxbox currently working on a number of new collections, with a specific focus on exterior seating and lighting. Luxxbox not only has its showroom, but also Objx, a shopfront that stocks the brand as well as other Australian and international designers.

Affordable Aussie art prints, packaged with love

Starting her own online art print boutique, designer Pia Watson wanted to tick three boxes: “to be affordable, [have the products] made locally and have them arrive packaged and presented with love and care.”

watermelon-art-print-unframed

With this mission in mind, Perri Luxe was founded and since launching late last year, has already produced a myriad of bold, bright and contemporary prints.

“We love colour and experimenting with colour,” explains Pia. “We don’t necessarily design to market trends but rather design based on styles, patterns and themes we are inspired by and colours we love together.”

chevron-large-blue-art-print-unframed

The idea came about when Pia was sourcing artworks for her and partner Matthew’s apartment and finding that many of the pieces they ordered online weren’t as expected when they arrived in the mail. “Some looked great online but were different in real life and if we were able to buy something framed, the print often arrived bubbled. Not to be disheartened, we saw an opportunity for us in the online market.”

All the prints are designed by Pia, often with the help of Matthew, and while colour is a central theme, she is now working on a black and white series. With a dream to one day open up her Sydney studio space to the public, for now, you can buy Perri Luxe online. Shipping is free.

Children’s wall stickers without the cliché

When illustrator Talya Baldwin went shopping for children’s wall stickers, she was inundated with graphics of hearts and text like “Mummy’s little princess’. There was nothing she wanted to put in her own child’s bedroom, so rather than complain, she decided to create her own.

dunnock and teal

In partnership with her designer husband Mark Rochester, Dunnock & Teal was born. Together, they create hand drawn vinyl stickers with pens and pencils, giving them a unique depth, texture and detail.

Working from a studio in England’s West Yorkshire (don’t worry, they ship to Australia) all designs are created in-house before being sent to the printers and turned into removable stickers.

dunnock-leaf1

The current sticker range is based on the childhood classic Thumbelina, a tale that has a special place in Talya’s heart. “As a child, I had a big book of illustrated fairy tales. It now belongs to my little girl! I often realise when I’m halfway through a drawing that it has been inspired, at least partly, by that book.”

After the success of the Thumbelina collection, a new pirate range is set to be released soon. Shipping to Australia is £8 ($15AUD). Shop online.

West Elm, Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma launch their Autumn-Easter collections

Last week, I visited the West Elm, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and Williams-Sonoma stores in Bondi to preview their impressive Autumn-Easter Collections.

I haven’t done much for Easter since I was a young child, when egg hunts and chocolate food comas were the activities of the day. Yet after seeing these Easter collections, I’m pretty keen for an Easter tea party (adults can do them too, right?) and if you have a child with a birthday coming up, please make this their party theme!

The collections aren’t just full of Easter goodies; West Elm in particular has some beautiful Autumn pieces ready to brighten up your home in preparation for the impending winter season. Timber furniture, chunky knit throws, wool rugs and plush cushions are very much a theme and one must not forget my all time favourite West Elm piece, the rose gold cutlery set. So good.

All items can be purchased online (West ElmPottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Williams Sonoma) or in store at 466-72, Oxford Street, Bondi Junction.

Appliances House Tours Kitchens The Block

Editorial assistant Olivia Shead gets to look inside The Block

Up front there are two things I’ve got to disclose. First, I’m a massive twins fan and though all my university studies have taught me being a journalist means being balanced, when push comes to shove it’s hard to put into practice. Second, this was kind of the best day of my life, so please humour this rather indulgently long post. Now that’s sorted, let us begin.

IMG_0918

The day began at 1pm, when I flew from Sydney to Melbourne. Staying at The Blackman (one of the Art Series Hotels and a favourite of Jen’s) on St Kilda Road, I had a suite on the 17th floor. The room was rather excessive for a single person, including two separate sleeping areas, a bathroom, kitchenette, dining area and balcony, but who am I to complain?!

IMG_0815

After staying at the hotel for a couple of hours, in a rather jittery excitement, the time had come. I was off to see The Block!

The Block is situated on a quiet street in Albert Park. All the neighbouring houses are cute single story terraces, which juxtapose rather dramatically against the massive structure that is The Block, or as the building is actually called, Dux House.

IMG_0869

Once in, the common area and pool is immediately on your right. Everyone who was attending the media preview got ushered into there, where, with some drinks and canapés, we waited for the proceedings to begin. This is also where some very disappointing news was broken to me: we were only allowed on the first floor of the apartments, not upstairs. They even had Channel 9 personnel guarding each staircase so no over eager Blockheads like me could sneak up! However, in perfect timing, I was handed the menu for the five-course dinner and suddenly I no longer felt as gloomy.

IMG_0872

From then on we went through each apartment and, in each kitchen, we were talked through the appliances, ate our next course and then had some time to walk around the entire ground floors. The first stop was Brad and Dale’s apartment. In one of their wisest moves, we discovered they had changed their dining table from the tiny four-seater to a more reasonable six-seater.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

What however was very obvious was how small the apartment’s entertaining space was. In fact, apart from the twins (I’m not biased, others agreed with me!) and even Steve and Chantelle’s, the others felt surprisingly tiny in comparison. That being said, we were a group of 40 or so people and how often are you going to have that many people in your apartment?

The boys’ guest bathroom was a knockout and their feature artwork in the kitchen was as amazing in real life as it had been on screen.

IMG_0880

Next up were Steve and Chantelle, who were probably my surprise of the night. Their kitchen, which I must admit I thought was a bit of a disaster when I saw it on TV (who puts a stove top in the middle of their soon to be living space?) worked really well and meshed nicely into the living and dining sections. They also had managed to separate their dining area somewhat from the living, which both the boys and Kyal and Kara didn’t do.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

The Super Ks’ apartment was our third visit and the timberwork was truly magnificent. Their guest bedroom was gorgeous and so spacious, which then made their living and dining area seem even smaller in comparison.

I couldn’t help agreeing with the judges on this one; it was such a grand entrance to the apartment — a real standout foyer and hallway — that you just expected the area that awaited you on the other side to be on the same level of grandeur. That said, I loved all their furniture and styling, and in terms of personal aesthetic, they definitely match mine the most.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

Our last stop was Alisa and Lysandra’s apartment and what a different it makes switching the kitchen and the dining. It truly made the space seem so much bigger. If you hadn’t had known that all the apartments were the same size, you wouldn’t have believed it.

You also got to see the light well in action, which made the ceilings seem huge. Unfortunately, it was dark when we arrived at their apartment but I’m sure it would have also added a lot of light to the space.

I’m trying to think of something critical to say about them but I honestly can’t. If I’m scraping the barrel I think a mirror as a splashback in the kitchen would be a nightmare to clean… but that’s all!

IMG_0926

The night ended after that and I got to take home the most incredible goodie bags (plural), a big box I later found out had a pot and pan in it and literally the biggest piece of parmesan cheese I’ve ever seen! You can imagine what I looked like flying this all back to Sydney as carry on!

The night was incredible and a big thank you to The Good Guys Kitchens for getting me there. Come auction day, may the best twins (I mean team) win!

Real rooms: A stylish nursery that both mum and child will love

Designing a nursery that’s stylish rather than babyish is no mean feat, but one that Shah Bahpyu has certainly managed.

Nursery1

Shah, whose daughter Helaina is seven months old, spent three months creating a contemporary space that was clean, fresh and uncluttered, but also contained some meaningful pieces.

With a soft pink and grey colour palette, her favourite features are the black and white photographs of Helaina’s grandparents, the Helaina in Wonderland art created by her godfather and the pink princess pedal car.

Helaina nursery pic2

And while it looks beautiful now, it wouldn’t be true home design if there hadn’t been some hurdles to begin with. “I was stuck for ages until I came across the wallpaper, then I knew exactly what to do,” explains Shah. “I find that I always struggle in the beginning to find a jumping off point, but once I find it the rest always falls into place relatively easily.”

nursery3

While Shah doesn’t currently work in interior design, the process has inspired the possibility of a career change. Now that she’s successfully designed her own, nurseries have become an area of interest, in particular designing a room that is pleasing to both mother and child.

“My husband and I always joked that babies didn’t understand anything and parents decorated nurseries for themselves, but once she came along, my feelings changed. I wanted her to have a great room, and yes I’ll admit I designed the room for me too!”

You can read more about Shah’s designing adventures on her blog Hammer and Heels.

Open to budding and established Australian designers alike, applicants will have to wow the judges by showing them how they would reinvent the vanity unit to enhance the bathroom space.

“The BIA has always been about pushing the boundaries of bathroom product design,” explains marketing manager Belinda Geels. “So this year we’re looking to student and professional designers to really explore the possibilities of bathroom furniture. We want to see how Australia’s emerging design talent can reinvent and truly redefine the vanity unit.”

Along with an updated brief, the BIA has also revamped its prizes, with the 2014 BIA professional category winner taking home $10,000 in cash and having their entry prototyped by Australia’s leading vanity unit manufacturer, Omvivo.

The student winner also gets a money-can’t-buy experience, collecting $5,000 in cash and heading to Barcelona for a two-week internship with the world’s largest bathroom manufacturer, Roca.

Now in its ninth year, the BIA encourages and celebrates innovative bathroom design and provides a platform for entrants to share their talent with the international design industry. The competition opened to both professional and student designers on 1 March. For more information and to see last year’s winners visit the BIA website here.

2014 Dulux Colour Awards finalists announced

After reviewing close to 200 entries from some of the top names in the Australasian design community, the judges of the 2014 Dulux Colour Awards have narrowed the list down to 76 finalists.

Murphy's HOuse
Murphy’s House by Alex Fulton Design

Now in its 28th year, the Dulux Colour Awards recognise the imaginative use of colour by architects and interior designers, to redefine the spaces they have created.

Standouts this year include Murphy’s House by Alex Fulton Design, a renovated 1903 villa, whose colour palette of a vibrant, bold and at times kooky theme, reflects the creativity of the owners.

Little Red Riding Hood by Nexus Designs is also a frontrunner, with the bold use of colour on the built-in joinery allowing for a simplistic look that feels complete without layers of accessories.

Both finalists are in the Single Residential Interior category, one of the nine categories. A winner will be announced for each, with the best of the category winners going on to be awarded the Grand Prix prize.

Dulux’s Andrea Lucena-Orr, said 2014 was another inspirational year, with submissions reflecting key commercial and residential trends: “The use of block colour was prominent in the [residential] categories. For the Single Residential Interior category, red, green and grey were popular colours.”

Have You Met Miss Jones launch biggest range yet

Have You Met Miss Jones (HYMMJ) is a force to be reckoned with. Opening back in 2006, the homewares brand has gone from strength to strength ever since.

have you met miss jone 5

Today, it launched its biggest range yet, featuring over 650 products that span from bowls to wall art to lighting. Famous for its vintage style and use of white bone china, this year’s range has expanded to include a modern geometric influence as well as featuring new materials.

Have you met miss jones 5

“We have pushed the bone china into a different direction this season with some more streamlined, contemporary designs,” explains creative director Jennifer Sampson. “We are exploring brand new mediums in coloured porcelain, stone and earthenware with exciting new glaze techniques we haven’t used before.”

These new glazes focus on an Australiania chic theme, with rich indigo and oceanic blues being a feature; a watercolor theme is also a prominent aspect of the range.

Have you met miss jones 2

But with such a large collection, even if blues and watercolor aren’t your thing, you are bound to find something that meets your aesthetic. “So many looks can be derived from all our collections,” says Jennifer. “We like to cater to different tastes and make updating your interior effortless and fun – we do all the hard work for you!”

have you met miss jones 6

For HYMMJ, it is all about striving to maintain an accessible aesthetic, creating unique and affordable designs that can lift your interior, and as Jennifer sums it up: “We simply wouldn’t put our name on a design we wouldn’t own.” Her favourite would have to be the geometric ceramic wall art (below), a novel idea that allows the owner to play designer at home.

Have you met miss jones

“You receive six triangular pieces in a box and can hang them however you like on your wall, we hope people embrace the idea and run with it. It’s called our DNA chain and customers can collect several sets and form unique wall art, tailored to their needs and space.”
