Kyal & Kara’s new home is all curves, palm trees and sea breeze

Expert renovators and hugely popular former Blockheads Kyal and Kara Demmrich have wrapped up their latest project – a three-bedroom family home and studio just metres from Blue Lagoon beach on the NSW Central Coast. Drawing inspiration from a frangipani tree in the front yard of a small fibro cottage, the couple were able to realise their vision for the home – the ultimate beach house for their growing family where Australian coastal meets Mediterranean villa.

Purchasing the house a few years back, the ‘fibro shack’ was demolished and their first ever new build started. With a goal to design a family home that was built to last, the importance of high quality and carefully selected materials was imperative.

Their hard work has resulted in the jaw-dropping transformation from a beach shack to a dream surf house with touches of Mediterranean style in both the architecture and interiors, where a focus on soft round curves offers a sense of relaxed drama and personality.

“In keeping with our Australian coastal meets Mediterranean villa vision, we’ve incorporated subtle curves throughout this build, beginning with the garage at the very front of the property, which is rendered to a rough Mediterranean-look render,” says Kara. “The curved features continue inside with arched doorways, rounded walls and a showstopper curved staircase taking centre stage of the living room.”

The front façade offers a stunning first impression with blackbutt timber decking, blending beautifully with hand-laid sandstone walls. The interior boasts soaring 3.6-metre raked ceilings, a neutral colour palette and an abundance of natural light.

An open plan kitchen, living and dining area is the true heart of the home, perfect for a family that enjoys entertaining.

To ensure the home not only looks great, but feels comfortable and can stand up to the knocks of everyday living, Kyal and Kara needed a solution that was impact resistant and sound insulating. “We’ve used Gyprock Superchek in the high traffic areas as we wanted to ensure it will withstand the impact of life with our energetic, boisterous kids who are at times literally bouncing off the walls! As its three times tougher, Superchek has enhanced resistance to dents, scuffs and scrapes, as well as improved noise resistance – perfect for our crazy two and their friends,” says Kara.

The rumpus room has curved helical stairs made smooth with Gyprock plaster compounds, that can be seen from the kitchen into the hallway and rumpus beyond, providing a link to the other curves in the home.

One of the couple’s favourite rooms is the master bedroom and a few key features make it special. “Throughout the home, we’ve used curves as a design element,” says Kyal, “and we wanted to do the same and add that architectural feature in the master bedroom.” The curved wall that leads from the entrance of the bedroom around to the walk-in robe is a stand out feature and really softens the look of the space, and feels luxurious.

“Gyprock Flexible was the perfect plasterboard to see our vision come to life. Versatile and easy to install, the thinner-than-usual boards can be layered on top of one another to create unique shapes whilst maintaining strength,” adds Kyal. “We also selected key doorways around the home to create arch entryway features,” said Kara. Having the two arched doorways into the bathroom gives a sense of design continuity throughout the bedroom and ensuite and really frames the beautiful finishes.

The ensuite is a great example of using varying textures with similar colour tones to create a room that’s interesting and packs a punch, with round mirrors and tactile accessories.

The guest studio offers accommodation for visitors and a retreat to escape to. It also acts as a way to create a ‘villa’ style yard for the main house, creating plenty of privacy from the front. With bespoke features, custom fitout and dreamy styling, the studio is one to inspire.

“We wanted to create a sleeping zone without completely closing off the bedroom with a wall. The arch doorway was something we created on the fly using Gyprock Flexitone, and is now one of my favourite features in the studio as it frames the bedroom perfectly. We obviously needed to be able to block the light to this room for those who like to sleep in, so we factored in floor-to-ceiling curtains which provide drama and a sense of luxury,” say Kara.

The house has an abundance of natural light with large and highlight windows throughout, and mostly raked ceilings offering a stylish yet unobtrusive, well thought out design element. “All this natural light is going to show up any flaws so we’ve used Gyprock Superceil. This product sets the standard for plasterboard on ceilings as it’s made with fibreglass to increase strength, prevent sag and reduce glaring light issues, creating a flatter ceiling. We’ve used it throughout the house,” says Kyal.

The crowning glory of the home is the outdoor entertaining space, featuring a gorgeous mosaic tiled pool, lush greenery and a stunning stone wall. With the beach just a stone’s throw away, Kyal and Kara have created an idyllic seaside escape in their own backyard.

A surprisingly stylish trip to the NSW Central Coast

Now I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with the Central Coast residents, because I can assure you I’ve always been a fan, but I have to be honest and say I never considered it as a particularly stylish place or a foodie destination. My recent weekend there with the family proved to me that things are starting to change and I’m happy to share more than a handful of places you must visit and eat at if you’re planning your next minibreak. Because let’s face it, it’s not exactly beach weather right now.

Norah Head Lighthouse

The Central Coast is a great option for our family. We live on the right side of Sydney for it to take no more than an hour to get there and it’s different enough to feel like you’ve really got away from it all and had a change of scene. Since Charlie came along, we haven’t been too keen on domestic breaks that involve flying. If you’re not going a long way or for a decent amount of time, it really doesn’t seem worth the hassle with a four year old and a baby. So the Central Coast is a no brainer and, after our most recent trip, I’m sure we will be back there again.

First off, where did we stay? We had two nights at Kyal and Kara Demmrich’s (of The Block fame) Airbnb (The Coastal Retreat at Toowoon Bay) which is effectively the most high spec, stylish, two-bed granny flat you’ve ever seen! It was gorgeous, well equipped and styled to perfection. Thoughtful touches like wine, cheese and chocolate went down a treat too!

Before we even got there however, we stopped in Gosford on the way up and had a delicious early lunch at The Bon Pavillion, a Sean Connolly restaurant which opened in the heart of town earlier this year. What a great start to the trip that was! I loved the dark and moody interior, the impressive staircase (come on, I’m an interiors person!) and the fact you could see into the kitchen where the action was.

Damian declared his steak to be the best he’d had all year and my chicken and prawn pie was mouthwatering. Sebastian polished off the fanciest fishfinger sandwich he’s ever had from the kid’s menu (nothing from a freezer box there, I assure you!) and we had a lovely relaxed meal with nice service. The less formal front of the venue was packed with locals enjoying brunch and coffee and you can even grab a takeout from another section. The Bon is a project of the John Singleton Group, run by Karina and Brian Barry, who also run Bells Of Killcare. Oh, how we used to love that place before we had kids (who aren’t allowed!).

En route to our Airbnb, Damian and the boys dropped me at Glow Beauty Space in Wamberal, which I already knew from Instagram! I mean, look at the place! The beautiful interior is by design duo Stewart + Highfield, who appear to be behind almost every cool space in the area! With a couple of hours of child-free pampering ahead of me, a glass of wine in hand, and lots of beautiful design details to look at, I was in heaven.

I had a pedicure and the Glow Facial (which included an eyebrow and lash tint) and left feeling like a new woman! The staff are all beautiful (inside and out) and make you feel so relaxed and looked after. I will be back, even if just as part of a day trip with a girlfriend. Best. Facial. Ever! Plenty of locals (clearly regulars) were enjoying getting their hair and makeup done for their nights out and the atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly. Owner Jade Pentony is all about incorporating beauty into the everyday, for busy women who want to enjoy these treatments but don’t have hours of time to spend. I hear you, Jade!

We spent a quiet night in at the Airbnb (yup, we have two young kids and the previous weekend had been spent in hospital with Charlie and a bad case of bronchiolitis so it was just what we needed!). We had a great sleep and the next day we were excited to explore some more. We took a drive though hip Long Jetty and can see why it’s being touted as the Newtown of the Central Coast.

We continued on to Avoca Beach where we had a beautiful lunch at Bombini. This is definitely somewhere we would have missed if we hadn’t been told about it, and I’m so glad we didn’t.

Situated on a leafy two acres in one of the Central Coast’s oldest homesteads, Bombini (Italian for bumblebee) by Cameron and Hayley Cansdell offers modern Italian cuisine with an emphasis on fresh produce selected from Australia and Italy. With a focus on sustainability, the property includes on-site vegetable gardens and we even saw chickens in the car park! We had traditional woodfired pizzas and, being in holiday mode (AKA greedy) couldn’t resist a side of wood roasted pumkin with gorgonzola, honey and walnuts. Well, you can imagine! Food coma! Seb enjoyed his pasta from the kid’s menu while Charlie happily made his way through the bread basket (although I’m sure bread that good is wasted on a baby!). We sat in a cosy, sunny corner of the covered veranda and could have sat there for hours, it just felt so relaxing and comfortable! The service was friendly and the kids were made to feel welcome too.

Clearly still hungry (ha!) we headed to The Fragrant Garden at Erina for ice cream (for Seb, of course). What a gorgeous little spot which has recently expanded to include the Bar Botanica garden café, a gelato kiosk by Mr Goaty and Distillery Botanica (they’re speaking my gin-loving language!) as well as the popular café and lovely gardens themselves. This place is worthy of a day trip all by itself too.

Oh, and the gelato was amazing but we couldn’t even finish half of it. Top marks for effort though.

Bar Botanica

We were so lucky with the weather and after all that food and sunshine another night on the couch was in order! The next day, after checking out of our little haven, we had a look at the stunning beach down the road (literally). Toowoon Bay itself is a cute little place too with a handful of cafes and shops. And then it was off to our last dining experience of the weekend, Saddles at Mount White. Run by the same couple as Bombini (and another John Singleton project), our expectations were high! What an amazing spot. It is literally half an hour from our house, just off the M1, but you could really be anywhere. Again, we’d never heard of it, but to be fair, we have been living in newborn land (how long can we use that excuse?) and it only opened a year ago.

There’s just something about being by water isn’t there, and eating by water is so relaxing, especially when it’s outside on a wraparound veranda. The inside area was super gorgeous too though, with a really luxe comfortable feel.

This trip really changed my ideas about the Central Coast and also made me realise it’s an awesome place to go in cold weather too. I might have to go back again without the boys to discover the shopping, which I didn’t really get a chance to touch on (too busy eating, frankly) but I’ve heard there are some real homewares gems!

Blockheads Kyal and Kara’s 8 mini makeover ideas for summer

The summer entertaining season is fast approaching and while it’s great to fling open the doors to welcome family and loved ones – those unfinished renovation jobs are on stark display!

Kyal and Kara
Kyal and Kara

Renovating is not just about the big-ticket bathroom and kitchen facelifts. You can have some nip and tucks along the way to keep your space fresh and create a visual distraction from the less attractive areas of your home.

The Block and Reno Rumble favourites Kyal and Kara have got some great ideas on how to deflect away from the unfinished work and turn your home into a sparkling entertaining oasis. Below are their top eight mini makeover ideas for summer:

  • Give your tiles a clean. Generally, a solution of vinegar and water should do the trick. If there is a build-up of soap scum, a heavy-duty tile and grout cleaner will assist to strip it off but avoid abrasive cleaners. To clean tile grout, mix a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water and gently scrub grout with an old toothbrush. For deeper cleaning, mix a paste of baking soda and water and work into the grout. Spray the vinegar and water solution over the area. It will bubble up and work away scrum. Rinse with warm water. Repeat.
  • Freshen up your home’s front entry. Make an instant statement by sweeping and dusting cobwebs from all those nooks and crannies. Paint the front door a contrasting and bright colour – like an orange, yellow or light blue! Place an exotic plant at the entrance to complement your new door for an eye-catching impact.

mekr2JEmN_O2kccdMmn9KiKMPamjHCA9Zya6c8Qz2ak

  • Update your home’s facade. Contrasting materials on facades are trending. You can tile a section to add or highlight an architectural feature and update the look of your house.
  • Simplify your space. Spaces that are free of clutter are more calming so reduce the clutter in your central rooms. Use the three box system: one box for items that belong in another room, one box for charity and one box for sales. If you need extra storage build some shelving brackets and use ply wood in a wardrobe or in the garage.

J4bNybDLkkSqIhL2ONpBUghuPbl2-1ZuxVcZZozdzsU,PWW6JgyOVdYefId724ioOWFZvCehAArW9jykF7cO-DQ

  • Create a feature wall. There are many ways to create an arty feature to draw the eyes. Shaped or textured tiles are on trend with patterned tiles a great alternative to wallpaper. With the right adhesive and original tiles in reasonable shape, they can be tiled straight over for a quick tiling job
  • Create a herb planter. Make sure you always have the herbs you need for those delicious summer feasts – the smell is also divine! Use recycled hardwood fence palings or crates and create your own. Place it somewhere in view and get your guests to pick some herbs for you as a great distraction for wondering eyes.
  • Turn heads with your luxurious driveway. Concrete driveways or paths can be tiled over for an instant luxurious look to add value to your home and outdoor entertaining areas.

TONP2z6tpHimI4LQxCiLCS3MXaDbS_iXyjvwX-N7Lec

  • Freshen up the kitchen with a new splashback. A new splashback is an extravagant quick fix. Try a dramatic statement with mosaic tiles. In a stark kitchen use loads of colours and in a busy one, go simple. Whatever colour you choose for your splashback bring it through the room with cushions or a beautiful vase.

Homeowner’s tears as Kyal & Kara deliver stunning Reno Rumble entertainer’s kitchen

There were tears of delight when Kyal and Kara’s amazing kitchen was revealed to the homeowner on Reno Rumble and we can see why. And that was before she even pressed the button which revealed a butler’s pantry behind an automatic sliding door!

Judges Darren Palmer and Romy Alwill described it as a great and beautiful kitchen with its two-tone cabinetry, top end appliances and Caesarstone marble-look tops. See how they used darker overhead cabinetry to provide balance and contrast in the otherwise light and bright space, with help and advice from Freedom Kitchens.

Reno Rumble’s sudden death semi-final

After five long weeks of renovating, it’s finally down to two! With Sunday’s semi-final reveal seeing the Redbacks (Kyal and Kara and Josh and Jenna) sent packing. It was a tight race, with the Blue Tongues (Ayden and Jess and Carly and Leighton) winning by just half a point!

So what did judges Darren Palmer and Romy Alwill think?

Blue Tongues

Carly and Leighton

CL_wk5_r2_bath000_108

With a brief that was contemporary shaker, Carly and Leighton’s bathroom was full of hits. Very spacious, the judges loved the new layout, having placed the bathroom where a bedroom once was. Perfect for a family, they loved the semi-freestanding bath, the large shower, the speakers and the mirror. They did however think the floor tiles needed to be bigger, the grout was too light and the tapware just a little too bling for the brief.

Our pick to buy: Outdoor Angle Leg Stool

Ayden and Jess

KK_wk5_r2_laundry000_367

While they had used the same tiles as in the bathroom, the judges thought for the laundry they worked perfectly. Loving the putty coloured cabinetry, the oak laminate bench top, the magnitude of storage and tapware, the room had zero misses!

JA_wk5_r2_kitchen000_192

Into Ayden and Jess’ second space of the kitchen and the judges loved the pitched skylights. Both architecturally beautiful and right on brief, the judges applauded how light and bright they made the space feel. Darren loved the island bench and the use of the laminate for the bench top. Romy liked the tapware and the sophisticated colour palette. No misses, once again!

Our pick to buy: Scanda Marble & Leather Vase in Black

Team Area

Team_wk5_r2_living000_151

The judges thought the living and dining area had great furniture and styling. However, they did think the pendant over the dining table was too close to the living space and that the banquette seating was too high. Overall they believed the space was incredibly stylish and aesthetically pleasing, but not 100% functional.

Our pick to buy: Benetta Loveseat Leather Sofa in Tan

Redbacks

Josh and Jenna

JJ_wk5_r2_bath000_311

More mansion than little suburban home, the judges thought the bathroom hit the nail on the head for the brief of understated elegance. Darren loved the large format travertine style tiles and how they were used to the ceiling. Romy thought the tapware was elegant and the basin a great choice. However, both judges did agree that the bathroom would have been better placed where the third bedroom was and that the bath was too dwarfed in the space.

Team Area

Team_wk5_r2_livedine000_366

The judges loved the living and dining area, especially its large size. The skylights got a big tick, as did the furniture and fireplace. The miss of the space was the pendants over the dining table, which Romy described as: “cheap and nasty!”

Our pick to buy: Carol Batchelor Limited Edition Print ‘Reverie 06’

Kyal and Kara

KK_wk5_r2_kitchen001_384

A gorgeous kitchen, the judges thought it was homely, beautifully styled and perfect for cooking and entertaining. Darren thought nothing needed to be added to the space. Into the butler’s pantry/laundry and Romy thought it was both beautiful and functional. Both judges agreed it was a space with zero misses.

Ayden and Jess and Carly and Leighton will now go head to head for the $100,000 cash prize. Who do you want to win? My fingers are crossed for crowd favourites Ayden & Jess!

Get the look: two perfect kitchen scores on Reno Rumble

Sponsored by Freedom Kitchens

This week on Reno Rumble saw two perfect scores awarded to two very different Freedom Kitchens; an edgy Industrial style versus an elegant Hamptons kitchen. The judges couldn’t find fault with either! Let’s delve into how both the Redbacks and the Blue Tongues did it…

Carly & Leighton's kitchen
Carly & Leighton’s kitchen

Industrial: Blue Tongues Carly & Leighton were briefed to transform Tara’s outdated 1940s kitchen into one with a relaxed industrial aesthetic and plenty of storage.

Inspired by the industrial warehouse living of Manhattan, they opted for strong matt black cabinetry and brought in timber elements to create a sense of warmth. The butler’s pantry and integrated dishwasher kept appliances hidden from view, whilst the added textures of Caesarstone benchtops, transparent glass splashback and metal factory pendant lights ensured a tightly edited result.

Carly & Leighton's kitchen
Carly & Leighton’s kitchen

Tara says it’s a completely different dynamic at home now: “I can entertain, whereas I didn’t enjoy it before because using more than two pots at the same time caused space issues! With the central bench family and friends can now sit there whilst I finish cooking which is perfect. It’s a much more social and beautiful space.”

Kyal and Kara's kitchen
Kyal and Kara’s kitchen

Hamptons: The Redbacks, Kyal and Kara, were tasked with turning Cathryn’s dark, pokey and very uninviting space into one with the sophisticated, country charm of the Hamptons.

Their perfectly executed design featured a neutral colour scheme of classic white Shaker doors and Clam Shell Caesarstone benchtops. Detailed open shelving, vintage inspired pendants and plenty of natural light were the finishing touches for this relaxed yet sophisticated Hamptons kitchen.

Kyal and Kara's kitchen

Cathryn says her new Freedom Kitchen is now part of the living and dining area and has opened up the whole space. “I didn’t enjoy being in my old kitchen, but I love being in the new one. I can now cook and still talk to my daughter and visitors.”

The Block’s Kyal and Kara reveal their top tricks for DIY tiling and styling

The Block’s Kyal and Kara have been travelling around Australia with Beaumont Tiles, hosting DIY Tiling and Styling workshops and sharing the tricks of the trade. But if you weren’t able to be there in person, here are their top tips for helping you make the most of your renovation.

Kyal and Kara
Kyal and Kara

Dry surface

Before you start your surface should be dry, clean and smooth. If you’re tiling in a wet area (bathroom or around the kitchen sink), the area must be waterproofed, straight and flush (no protruding nails).

Adhesive

Bottom line, don’t skimp, and choose the right adhesive for the space. There are many brands of adhesive and they’re all designed for specific types of tiles and tile surfaces. Cheap adhesives may decay and cause tiles to crack.

Size matters for the novice DIY

Tiling with big tiles is tough, even for seasoned pros. Large tiles are heavy and are expensive to replace if mistakes are made, so DIY novices should stick to tiles no bigger than 300x300mm.

Layout

Draw up a plan for your floor, wall or splashback and map out where your tiles will go. Spending the time to mark out square lines and doing a dry lay will pay dividends on the entire job.

Laying

Tiles that are placed unevenly may create an uneven joint (or lip) which could be a trip hazard. There’s a new product called the Simple Accurate Levelling System (SALS) which is perfect for precision tiling. It can help DIY’ers achieve a flat finish with minimal lippage.

Grout

Wait at least 24 hours after laying before grouting and protect the tiles from any water or weather by covering them with old clean sheets. Don’t grout where walls meet floors or where two walls meet, instead apply silicone when the surrounding grouted area is dry.

The Block’s Kyal and Kara on how to renovate with your partner and keep the peace!

I’ve always thought competing with your partner on The Block was asking for divorce (such the cynic!), however the Super Ks Kyal and Kara Demmrich are proof that renovating with your partner can be fun, you can make money and you can even become stronger from it!

Kyal and Kara - Renovating reno addict
Kyal and Kara Demmrich

So what are their secrets for successfully – and peacefully – renovating with a partner?

  • Spend time in the initial stages to plan and map out a time frame, but remember you need to be flexible
  • Don’t take on too much at once. It may be appropriate to tackle one room at a time.
  • Make sure you schedule time away from the renovation. Go to the beach or head to the
gym, and get some exercise.

“Kyal and I have been together since we were 16 – so more than 10 years now! We were married in 2008, bought our first home together when we were 21, and we haven’t stopped renovating since,” explains Kara.
“We love a good transformation and looking back to see what we’ve achieved but generally speaking, we don’t agree initially. We are always going back and forth with ideas and usually both end up loving the decisions we make.”

If the couple have varying ideas on a style or layout they throw ideas and suggestions around until a happy medium is found. Or they’ll sleep on it for a couple of days.

“I usually have the big ideas and Kyal is the one that logically thinks about these ideas and works out, from a building perspective, if they’re possible. But we always look back to the big picture and remember the goals of the renovation.”

The cost of renovating can be a tipping point for couples so clarifying goals and setting a budget and tracking it (through an Excel spreadsheet for example) will ensure spending doesn’t get away from you.

“For example, are you renovating your home to sell or is it your dream home you want to invest in? Thinking about these points will help to ensure that you don’t over capitalise or regret the choices you make. Don’t try and do too much of it yourself. This is usually when mistakes are made or corners cut. With a budget in mind, getting in professionals for certain trades will probably save time and money in the long run.”

The Block Auctions: TV’s biggest plot twist ever?

(Otherwise known as the one where editorial assistant Olivia Shead watches the Block finale and narrowly avoids having a heart attack. — Jen)

In a result I think it’s fair to say absolutely no-one saw coming, Steve and Chantelle took out The Block Fans vs Faves last night and to be honest, I’m not ready to accept it. Scott Cam says: “It’s the craziest night of television I’ve ever done.” For me, it’s the craziest night of television I’ve ever watched.

Steve and Chantelle
Steve and Chantelle

Okay, deep breath, let’s start at the beginning: the reserves. Kyal and Kara’s comes out highest at $1,900,000, minus the money from their challenge win and their final reserve is $1,872,750. Steve and Chantelle follow suit with a reserve of $1,850,000, down to $1,834,000. Brad and Dale’s goes from $1,830,000 to $1,802,750. And Alisa and Lysandra’s shrinks from $1,775,000 to $1,759,000.

At this point, I’m feeling good; my favourites the twins have a solid reserve, substantially lower than their competitors. Naively I’m thinking, let’s make it two wins for the girls.

Now we’re up to auction order and in the first surprise of many it goes shockingly well. The order is worked out amongst the teams in a total of 30 seconds: the boys first, followed by the Super Ks, the twins and lastly, Steve and Chantelle.

Brad and Dale's winning master bedroom and ensuite

With that done, the auctions are ready to start and the boys are up. Down in the auction room (in other words the kitchen) the first person I spot is Frank. For committed Block fans (like me) you’ll remember him from Sky High, where he bid unsuccessfully for four out of the five apartments before finally securing Matt and Kim’s. He was certainly one to watch during last year’s auctions and the same can be said for these, but more on that later.

The boys’ auction goes fantastically well, they sell their apartment for $2,310,000 and break the record for the most money ever won on the show, going home with a sweet profit of $507,250. It seemed like no-one could dream of beating them, but that was definitely not the case.

Kyal and Kara's winning main bathroom
Kyal and Kara’s winning main bathroom

Kyal and Kara are next and they shoot past the boys profit, selling their apartment for $2,440,000, taking a profit of $567,250. Ok, so surely no one could beat that? Wrong again!

Next are the twins and I feel my stomach drop. Like those that have gone before them, the bids go thick and fast. The girls are crying, I’m squealing and then it’s over. The twins sell their apartment for $2,375,000 and take home a mammoth profit of $616,000.

Alisa and Lysandra's winning kitchen
Alisa and Lysandra’s winning kitchen

Now, only one couple stood in the way of the twins’ second Block win. Enter Steve and Chantelle. How could these underdogs possibly beat $616,000? The auction starts and once again it’s quick and this is where Frank comes into play. He’s now been bidding and unsuccessfully at that, for the last three apartments, so the question is, how desperate is he for the last one? Unfortunately for my dear twins, a lot! He’s going hard at it, and the profit margin between Steve and Chantelle and the twins is shrinking fast. They’re ten grand off the girls. First call. Come on, sell! Second call. Ad break.

Expletives may have been heard. The longest ad break of my life and we’re back.

Steve and Chantelle's winning living and dining
Steve and Chantelle’s winning living and dining

A tiresome recap and then it’s down to the ten grand margin again. I’m praying it will sell, but alas it’s not meant to be. They pass the girls. Steve and Chantelle are in shock (I’m not surprised, even they must appreciate this is the biggest plot twist ever) and their apartment is sold for $2,470,000. A profit of $636,000 plus the $100,000 for winning and they go home with a tidy $736,000. Goodness gracious.

I don’t want to be a naysayer but I’m saying it anyway, being last was the victory move here. I think infamous Frank and all the other bidders were so desperate to get one of the apartments that they went a little crazy on the last one and for Steve and Chantelle, that meant winning. Congratulations to them and now, I need a cuppa and a lie down after reliving it!

Brad and Dale win the Block master bedroom suite reveal

Well I never, Brad and Dale, with their brave bath in the bedroom, won last night’s (delayed!) room reveal. I’m a massive bath lover so it does appeal to me, although I have to say I don’t like the idea of the dust, and cleaning it, but hey, it’s rather unique and luxurious! I think a master suite should be a bit different and special like this, even if it’s not a 100% practical or a safe choice! What did you think?

Bathrooms Expert Tips The Block

Timber in the bathroom? Not just for The Block!

Following the first Block bathroom reveals a lot of you asked me if it was really practical to use timber in the bathroom or did it just look good? I asked Reece Bathrooms’ Belinda Geels for her expert advice.

Timber has been a big feature of many of The Block teams’ bathroom spaces this season. From the bespoke timber vanity tops in Brad and Dale’s bathrooms and feature paneling in Alisa and Lysandra’s main bathroom, to Steve and Chantelle’s parquetry ceiling feature and the stunning full timber wall in Kyal and Kara’s perfect score main bathroom, it’s been a winning element of many of the standout bathrooms from both the fans and favourites.

We often get questions from customers about how to properly use this beautiful material in bathroom spaces, particularly when it comes to reducing the risks of swelling or warping of timber in damp spaces or close to wet areas. To help out those of you looking to recreate some of The Block’s best looks at home, we’ve compiled top tips from our experts and industry partners on using timber in everything from vanities to flooring and feature walls in your bathroom.

Timber choice is key

Whether you’re looking to use wood for your vanity, flooring, walls or furniture, your timber selection is crucial. As well considering the look and feel of your timber, it’s important to think about the tightness of the wood grain. According to Stephen Royce from Australian bathroom product manufacturer Formed, solid timbers with a tight grain are best for bathroom spaces as they’re less likely to be affected by moisture. Think mahogany, teak, cedar or even bamboo (preferably local plantation grown) for best results.

Seal for success

One of the most common questions asked about timber in the bathroom is around the risk of expansion or warping. According to Stephen, regardless of the timber you choose for your bathroom space or how you plan to use it, you must ensure that it is properly sealed and waterproofed.

“It all comes down to using the correct seal. Sealing prevents moisture getting into the timber, and can reduce any issues with warping, staining or significant expansion or contraction,” he says.

Sealing is the most important factor in the process, as it helps make the timber more resistant to water and moisture. There are various water, oil and wax-based sealants available on the market, which are suitable for different timbers and applications. Be sure to speak to an expert to help select the best sealant for your timber and to ensure it is properly applied. To be doubly sure that your timber doesn’t stain or warp, make sure you wipe up any water that may pool on its surface as quickly as possible.

Ventilation must-dos

Timber looks beautiful in the bathroom, however, as it’s a natural material, it pays to ensure you’ve got the right ventilation in place. A well-ventilated bathroom space will reduce the moisture in the air as quickly as possible, helping ensure the timber will respond well over time as the product ages.

Fake it

If using natural timber is not for you, there are now plenty of great ‘timber look’ options available, particularly for flooring.

Kate Fuller from our tiling partner Perini Tiles says porcelain timber tiles are becoming increasingly popular. As well as looking and feeling like real timber, they’re perfect for wet areas like bathrooms as they’re water resistant, low maintenance and durable. They won’t warp or scratch and don’t require the sealing or oiling real timbers need in damp spaces.

“Timber tiles have become so popular there is now an abundant of colours and textures available — from oak, blackwood, spotted gum to recycled, raw and coloured options. Advancements in tile technology and digital ink printing ensure tiles perfectly simulate the look and feel of the real thing with no two tiles looking alike,” Kate says.

Reece Bathrooms provide the bathroom products and accessories you see on The Block each week. Check out www.reece.com.au for more bathroom inspiration and how to incorporate the timber look into your bathroom.

Editorial assistant Olivia Shead gets to look inside The Block

Up front there are two things I’ve got to disclose. First, I’m a massive twins fan and though all my university studies have taught me being a journalist means being balanced, when push comes to shove it’s hard to put into practice. Second, this was kind of the best day of my life, so please humour this rather indulgently long post. Now that’s sorted, let us begin.

IMG_0918

The day began at 1pm, when I flew from Sydney to Melbourne. Staying at The Blackman (one of the Art Series Hotels and a favourite of Jen’s) on St Kilda Road, I had a suite on the 17th floor. The room was rather excessive for a single person, including two separate sleeping areas, a bathroom, kitchenette, dining area and balcony, but who am I to complain?!

IMG_0815

After staying at the hotel for a couple of hours, in a rather jittery excitement, the time had come. I was off to see The Block!

The Block is situated on a quiet street in Albert Park. All the neighbouring houses are cute single story terraces, which juxtapose rather dramatically against the massive structure that is The Block, or as the building is actually called, Dux House.

IMG_0869

Once in, the common area and pool is immediately on your right. Everyone who was attending the media preview got ushered into there, where, with some drinks and canapés, we waited for the proceedings to begin. This is also where some very disappointing news was broken to me: we were only allowed on the first floor of the apartments, not upstairs. They even had Channel 9 personnel guarding each staircase so no over eager Blockheads like me could sneak up! However, in perfect timing, I was handed the menu for the five-course dinner and suddenly I no longer felt as gloomy.

IMG_0872

From then on we went through each apartment and, in each kitchen, we were talked through the appliances, ate our next course and then had some time to walk around the entire ground floors. The first stop was Brad and Dale’s apartment. In one of their wisest moves, we discovered they had changed their dining table from the tiny four-seater to a more reasonable six-seater.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

What however was very obvious was how small the apartment’s entertaining space was. In fact, apart from the twins (I’m not biased, others agreed with me!) and even Steve and Chantelle’s, the others felt surprisingly tiny in comparison. That being said, we were a group of 40 or so people and how often are you going to have that many people in your apartment?

The boys’ guest bathroom was a knockout and their feature artwork in the kitchen was as amazing in real life as it had been on screen.

IMG_0880

Next up were Steve and Chantelle, who were probably my surprise of the night. Their kitchen, which I must admit I thought was a bit of a disaster when I saw it on TV (who puts a stove top in the middle of their soon to be living space?) worked really well and meshed nicely into the living and dining sections. They also had managed to separate their dining area somewhat from the living, which both the boys and Kyal and Kara didn’t do.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

The Super Ks’ apartment was our third visit and the timberwork was truly magnificent. Their guest bedroom was gorgeous and so spacious, which then made their living and dining area seem even smaller in comparison.

I couldn’t help agreeing with the judges on this one; it was such a grand entrance to the apartment — a real standout foyer and hallway — that you just expected the area that awaited you on the other side to be on the same level of grandeur. That said, I loved all their furniture and styling, and in terms of personal aesthetic, they definitely match mine the most.

APL PHOTOGRAPHY - www.aplphotography.com.au

Our last stop was Alisa and Lysandra’s apartment and what a different it makes switching the kitchen and the dining. It truly made the space seem so much bigger. If you hadn’t had known that all the apartments were the same size, you wouldn’t have believed it.

You also got to see the light well in action, which made the ceilings seem huge. Unfortunately, it was dark when we arrived at their apartment but I’m sure it would have also added a lot of light to the space.

I’m trying to think of something critical to say about them but I honestly can’t. If I’m scraping the barrel I think a mirror as a splashback in the kitchen would be a nightmare to clean… but that’s all!

IMG_0926

The night ended after that and I got to take home the most incredible goodie bags (plural), a big box I later found out had a pot and pan in it and literally the biggest piece of parmesan cheese I’ve ever seen! You can imagine what I looked like flying this all back to Sydney as carry on!

The night was incredible and a big thank you to The Good Guys Kitchens for getting me there. Come auction day, may the best twins (I mean team) win!

All the rooms from The Block living/dining reveals

The thing about being out of Australia now is that I can’t watch The Block for the rest of the series! But before you all start shouting “first world problems!” at me, don’t worry, I’m relying on my sources to continue to bring you the weekly Monday wrap-up of every room reveal. It’s probably about time I admitted I was lucky enough to have a tour of The Block a few weeks back. And editorial assistant Olivia Shead gets to check it out tomorrow night, so look out for her social media pictures and a blog post to come later this week.

So here we go. Last night’s winners were, for the first time, Steve and Chantelle. At the time of writing, I’d not had a chance to catch up on the reaction to their win. What did you think? If I’d been judging though, I’d definitely have picked Alisa and Lysandra. But I wasn’t, so hey…

I’ve made no secret of my twins favouritism but I defy anyone not to see what I’m talking about after last night’s living/dining reveal. Their apartment is HOT. I want to move right in. Not that the other couples aren’t doing some great things too (I like Brad and Dale’s kitchen more than most and Kyal and Kara’s bathroom was brilliant) but Alisa and Lysandra, in my opinion, have the most consistently strong look, week after week (hanging bathroom moss aside). And their living/dining area is not only stylish and texture-tastic, but so practical and functional with its separate dining, desk nook and generous living area. Top marks from me!

Alisa and Lysandra win the coveted kitchen reveal on last night’s Block

I don’t always agree with the judges, much as I like and respect all three of them, but last night I sure did. It would have been just wrong if the twins hadn’t won the kitchen room reveal. I thought their room was outstanding: brave, well thought out and expertly finished.

alisa lysandra kitchen 1

It scored points for both style and practicality with all the judges. If you didn’t watch the show, make sure you catch up this week, because the photos don’t really do it justice. I loved the sophisticated look and mix of textures.

alisa lysandra kitchen 2

As for the judges, they loved it. Shaynna said it was a chef’s kitchen and despite the fact the girls had been driving her mad with some of their rooms, they had really proven themselves this week. Darren was impressed with their foresight in putting the kitchen somewhere else entirely to the rest of the contestants and loved the void and ceiling height. Neale said it made sense of the whole space and he can’t wait to see what they do with their living and dining areas. He also said it was modern but not too trendy and would date well.

Kyal and Kara

kyal kara kitchen 1

I loved this kitchen too but really wish it had a table or some better options for sitting and eating. That said, it is hard to judge without seeing it in the context of the living and dining area. The judges loved the huge pantry and storage with timber doors. Neale said it was his favourite thing this week. Darren loved the glass over exposed brick splashback (so did I!) and said he had never seen it done before. Shaynna commented on the great use of texture but said it was lacking in colour and felt a little too masculine.

kyal kara kitchen 2

Chantelle and Steve

chantelle steve kitchen 2

I wasn’t crazy about this one. I’m not even sure why. There was a lot right with it and Chantelle and Steve certainly felt confident about their effort. It’s a little too industrial and quirky for me and I think it may polarise potential buyers.

The judges loved the lightbox-style poster art and Darren thought the island benchtop was great. Neale said it was a quirky and contemporary kitchen but Shaynna said it was too cluttered. Darren was also worried about how the lounge and dining areas will work with it but I guess that all remains to be seen!

Brad and Dale

The judges really weren’t too keen on this kitchen but I thought it was great. I agreed with Neale about the LED lighting being a bit over the top but I certainly didn’t think it felt 90s, like he did. I loved that curved bench, the lights, the brick wall and the floor. The bar stools made me cringe but on the whole I really liked it. And that artwork! Wow!

brad and dale kitchen 1

The judges described the art as both epic and divine! Neale said the floor was breathtaking but the room as a whole was really dated. While he loved some things about it, he said it reminded him of the 1990s when ice white kitchens were in. Darren said it felt too much like a showroom. And Shaynna said it didn’t feel warm. Try as she might to see what it looked like without the blue LED lighting, she couldn’t find the right switch, and there were a LOT of switches! Personally, I think this kitchen needs a few tweaks, different lighting (love the pendants though) and new tools and it’ll be HOT.

There’s no doubt about it, if it was the twins’ turn to feel hard done by last week, it was the boys’ turn this week.

Get the look: Last night’s Block guest bedroom reveals

How impressive were last night’s guest bedroom reveals on The Block?! I actually really liked all the rooms and wouldn’t have liked to have had to pick the winner. But Kyal and Kara were the chosen couple and I did think their room was fantastic.

kyal and kara 3 guest bedroom the block

After slamming their water feature last week, the judges couldn’t believe they were seeing the same couple’s styling this week. Neale Whitaker said it felt clean and modern, in keeping with the loft environment and that the colour palette was perfectly restrained. Darren Palmer said the pair were at their best this week and that all the little things were done beautifully and that he was proud of their styling progress following his masterclass as they’d taken on board all his tips.

I think my own favourite this week was Chantelle and Steve’s room. It was certainly a strong week for those fans! I loved their brave parquetry wall feature, as did the judges. Neale said it was incredible and Darren said the room had real style to it. Shaynna loved the storage and the way the Art Deco features had been brought up to date. Their only real negative was about the antlers, which Neale called clichéd. I have to agree. I’m a bit over antlers!

chantelle and steve 1

I love rooms which are more than just a white box when you remove the furniture, yet still clean looking enough to work with different kinds of furniture. On that front, I thought these couples, and Alisa and Lysandra with their exposed brick, really delivered.

Now onto my favourite twins, Alisa and Lysandra. I loved their room too, and the fact they experimented with colour this week. The girls had the most mixed judges’ comments of everyone. Neale really loved their new design direction and their light sconces, while Shaynna Blaze — who the girls say judge them the harshest — said the look was too ‘in your face’ and would alienate some buyers.

alisa lysandra guest bedroom the block 1

Darren loved the lighting and the look but pointed out the position of the artwork wasn’t practical for sitting up in bed. And what did you think of that artwork (Portrait of Amy Winehouse After Klimt by Sue Quinn)? I loved it.

Last but not least, Brad and Dale impressed the judges by being in touch with their feminine side this week, although Neale didn’t like the colour palette and found it too primary and clichéd. Shaynna loved the storage but said the colour was too dark and the hanging rail was impractically high. Darren said the look was soft and beautiful.

Get the look from last night’s Block room reveals

Did you enjoy last night’s first room reveal? Alisa & Lysandra won and I think rightly so. Having finally met the girls at my event in Melbourne on Thursday, I may be a little biased, but I like their attitude, think they know their stuff and have great taste. So I’m putting it out there now: I’m on Team Twins (editorial assistant Olivia is a big fan too)!

If you’d like to get the look from any of the four rooms, I’ve rounded up some of the products available to buy online from The Block Shop. From Alisa and Lysandra’s (above), check out the Forty Winks Gap bed and the Urban Road deer canvas.

I absolutely LOVED the Zuster copper mirror (I NEED it!) in Kyal and Kara’s room (below) and the Christopher Pennings artwork from Otomys Arthouse. This was my second favourite room. Loved the soft colour palette.
